Talent, technique, skills, on-pocketness (😆), taste, musicality, sense of composition, just... EVERYTHING at maximum grade as possible! By far my favorite as well.
He makes the ridiculous seem so simple. I remember when I first heard porcupine tree on record was like yeah I can do that. Went to try and learn was like...ah. guess not.

Everytime I watch this performance I discover something new - that snare roll at 3:52 to accentuate "god" in the lyrics is ridiculous
There is only one Gavin Harrison. He hits with such power, precision, and finesse, and he exudes control, all the while being fully in the pocket and totally complimenting the song. The absolute drummer's drummer.

He is a masterful composer. Keeps the flow of the song so well and interesting with super pleasing to the ear phrasing and fills yet hardly does anything the same.

I am not a drummer, so I have no idea if technically is at the top echelon, but what I do care about is that he is one of the best musical drummer I have ever heard.
You have heard it right. The way Gavin uplifts the song while still remaining reserved is another level of talent. Gavin always and always plays for the sake of the song!
Oh, he's definitely in the highest of echelons. He is elite.
Virgil Donati is probably even more technical. But the difference is tiny, and I do prefer the musicality and approach to music that Gavin has. He grooves like hell, he is a metronome, he is my number one drummer, and I listen to a lot of music, style, and drummer, including Colaiuta, Weckl, Simon Philips, Steve Gadd, Coleman, Adam Pedder,.....and many other very good drummer but I always come back to listen to Gavin. He s a beast!
His drum set, might as well be gold. He's a golden boy.
I just heard his Sonar kit for the first time recently. I have to agree, it sounds amazing.
He is so, so good and keeps getting better with every new release. Have to make a point of seeing him live one of these days!

The cleanliness of Gavin's singles takes a level of practice, time, and discipline that few of us want to put in. Then, the clean Hertas (with power) on the bass drums at 5:15 (LATE in the song, mind you!)...OMG, I could feel my tibialis anterior muscles scream just by watching his performance! Just exceptional, and the amount of practice to have achieved such skill must be immense!
He is absolutely GOATed... Can't be in King Crimson otherwise

I've read similar comments about Neil Peart, so there's no question that Gavin Harrison is just as technically solid. Dude blows me away. I'm kinda surprised he didn't audition for Dream Theater after Portnoy left.... 😮😮

It is funny that many of you compare Gavin Harrison to el estepario...gavin being 100 levels above.
Exactly 😂😂 it's very funny but I mean I don't blame people. Gavin does everything for the sake of song whereas el estepario is a great drummer but mostly shows off.
Listening El estepario to his own drum parts with the band Saratoga and i'm not impressed too much, he is awesome in time ,flawless,mistakeless but he didn't have so much musicallity so if it will be possible to give it to Gavin the differences in creativity will shown clearly.El is a monster but his playings are obvious didn't surprise anyone.He plays exactly perfect but something missing and maybe that is the soul in combination with the technique!!
Incredible performance and great song choice, he certainly has the skill to make that sound so pure and natural. Deffo keep an eye out for more of his drumming.
Gavin is a machine, so tasteful yet always on time whilst making everything look effortless.
And to not piss on other drummers, this is all live, no 50 takes...
I've sat front row in front of Gavin's kit several times during his time in King Crimson. Mind blowing. And I've been front row for Rush.

GH is a man’s man when it comes to drumming
Gavin sounds like no one else. The best way I can describe his sound is "angular". It's instantly recognizable. Porcupine Tree was amazing while they were around. Also, if you're looking to do another reaction, watch the "Time" video by Thomas Lang off the ProgPop album. I think you'll be captivated by it (you'll know what I mean instantly when watching it).

I have sonors full birch, the "cheaper" version, working with it I'm in love with it no desire to ever upgrade further but to add to it.
Saw them play this live in Denver last year (PT is my girl's fav band). Wasn't really aware of him before, but I am a fan now.

Please don't consentrate on the drum set-up... BUT Gavin's amazing talent... Some drummers have thousands of gatchets.. Gavin uses each little part to amazing full execution
Amazing drummer, his background and influences are impressive, think he's got a book out with some really cool stuff, he also plays with another band called The Pineapple Thief, you should check his work there too.

a few months ago I came across Danny Carey , I already heard vicarious years ago and loved it but didnt know the bands names , so now Ive heard many more tool songs and watched Danny play live in yt , and of course Rush (Love Neil ) !!! since I was a teenager , and ive heard of porcupine tree and a litte of their music but wow after watching Gavin play he is on the same level , incredible percussionist !!! he has that something I cant put into words , like Neil or danny and many others that are on this level of skill and honestly Truley gifted , WOW

So Gavin played this gig, you steal the video, “react” to it, and gain a following with income? No, I wouldn’t attend a “meet and greet” with you. The fantastic Porcupine Tree records Gavin plays on have been out for twenty years. The fact that you are just now hearing Gavin’s playing only shows how out of touch you have been.

Big Porcupine Tree / King Crimson fan here. Gavin's not the first killer drummer either one of these bands have had, but he's definitely the best (possible exception - Bill Bruford). I think it's half-way through the video before Colby even blinks!

Well produced drums always sound good. Whether they truly sound as good as you think is another matter. If they're tuned well, with EQ I can make them sound like anything.
One thing I learned after 25 years of working in studios is that rock and roll drums aren't real.
If you want to see more of Gavin I highly recommend him with King Crimson and the song Indicipline. They are three drummers in the band at this time in front and the rest of the band behind. They really having a good time behind the drums, even the band behind is smiling. What the drummers are doing here have never been done before. They are not just playing on the drums they play with the drums.....if you undersytand what I mean. Enjoy.
