I agree with you 100%! Greyson gave it a totally different undercut and it feels more urgent, but it most certainly wasn't out of place. This was a fantastic offering. I think II would be proud.
It really made sleep token sound more in line with classical but metal. Im not sure what they are considered now they are an odd band compared to a lot of others. They do their thing beautifully.

That, as I just said elsewhere, goes back to the progressive elements of metal in the 90s. They looked back to a number of influences in the 70s from prog rock and jazz, or in the case of people like Igor from Sepultura, even Latin music. Heck, I'd love to see Greyson's deep cuts dive into metal before he leaves ST and gets into a prog jazz/metal supergroup that is the modern take on Mahavishnu Orchestra.
So how does a jazz drumer become this wicked with the double bass? Thats INSANE. And the fact that he somehow landed on doing the drum & bass groove and even the same cymbal phrases. Wow.
I love how this cat started off as a strictly jazz dude, and here he is coming up with all the intricate double kick patterns for a cover that's not even that heavy. Great series.
As musicians, everyone hits a wall or a learning curve that feels impossible in the moment. It's inspiring to see how Greyson handled the uncomfortable experience.

This is awesome. I'm a huge Sleep Token fan and didn't expect something like this. Greyson's drum arrangement was really cool to hear. Made the song feel totally different and not in a bad way. Way to go!
Greyson absolutely owned that song. I love that even when he was unsure and the choices were different than the original, he played it like HE was driving the song vs just another element in the mix. So freakin cool. The confidence to just make a decision and own it is what made it work.
Right?! I mostly knew him as a jazz drummer myself, but he now plays for Suicidal Tendencies of all bands! He's just a world class musician through and through.

Truly great recording, drumming, and video production. Truly a great series! Honestly would love a "how we do these" tour when its later in its lifespan
I don't know this tune at all, but I think making Greyson angry and off-balance really helped how he interpreted the drum part. The music calls for undisciplined edginess, which Greyson delivered in spades, although in the practice room I bet he's the most disciplined player alive. Watch the video once more and focus solely on Greyson's hi-hats. It's like he speaks through them, there's a level of expression in his strikes. Mesmerizing as always!
I love how intuitive he is here. This one is one of my favorites on this channel, because he got the feel of an unusual band's music and really just figured it out flawlessly, and that is awesome.

Ps. If you would be interested in listening that band that broke a barrier for me, it was : The Great Below
We broke up many years ago, no drama, the singer left after a while and with the new singer it wasn't really working out and people lost motivation for that project sadly.
I'm not even a drummer, but I still find it interesting and enjoyable to watch these videos. I'm amazed how drummers are able to recreate these rhythm parts afterwards, and how the sometimes fall really close to this original ones ! Kudos guys !
Same. I feel like drumming would be so hard.
You gotta be part octopus I think.
Same here, I'm a mid 40s RN. I recently started watching these. LOVE THEM.
@@JanoyCresva the hardest part of drumming i learning to control your limbs, at first it can be hard to get your two hands doing one thing and your feet doing something else. But once you get control of the body drumming is actually easier than most instruments as long as you can hold a beat because unlike other instruments you don't have to memorize notes and crap, you can improvise the entire song as long as you keep it in the right time.
unless a drummer is insane (tool, animals as leaders), the drum parts will typically fall under a fairly predictable vocabulary
Those drums will NEVER steal Money from him Again... holy hell dude is a Beast
They'll show up if he calls them at midnight.
He joined Sepultura now
Man, Greyson, too good. Wish he had more fun tho, man is hard on himself.
True
It's sort of encouraging to see one of the best modern drummers have zero confidence lol
Cause he's young enough to know how unnecessarily cruel people in comment sections are
And that's why I enjoy, despite some uptight shift leads at the moment, I love being a pizza delivery driver for rent money.
That’s partly why he is so good.
Dude absolutley killed himself trying to get the parts down the way he thought they'd work. What a beast.
I don't care what anyone says. As a guitarist of nearly 30 years,......being dropped into a situation thats completely out of your comfort zone will absolutely make you a better musician. It creates a resilience in you that allows you to cover mistakes and mishaps on the fly without freaking out. The plaid pants help as well. Great job brother. Very difficult.

Buddy killed it! His version was a ramped up energetic variation of the original and it sounded sick!
The hammering double bass in the bridge gave me goosebumps, very cool take on the song
I would love a refined, clean version of this. It's such a different feel to the original. It's fucking sick.
With ya homie domie !!!!
kind of a shame you couldn't buy a copy of this track. would be blasting it driving down the road.
definitely, the double bass he adds in sounds so good with the rest of the band and adds a whole bunch more energy to the track
@leonidas.original that section is so tasty. makes me wish I had the talent and resources to get a kit to play. so awesome sounding. his play on the think it is a high hat is really cool as well.
It’s too driving and in front of the meter. Obnoxious basically
WILD how Greyson does so much hi hat work in the verse having not heard the song, given that II is constantly using the hats in the verses. Insane
Maybe they're pulling a fast one, and Greyson actually is II
It's not that surprising, especially if you understand music theory.
@@jhamilton1007ya there isn’t anything he hasn’t seen at this point.

He added kind of a punkish metal nervousness to the song which is more on the goth dark side. It gives a whole other vibe to the song. I am no drummer but a big sleep token fan and this was really impressive. They should show it to II.
I agree with you 100%! Greyson gave it a totally different undercut and it feels more urgent, but it most certainly wasn't out of place. This was a fantastic offering. I think II would be proud.
Indeed, basically made it a HIM song and I'm not mad about it 😅
I'm sure II saw it in his underwear while chilling on his sofa bed
Perhaps II already saw this and maybe he has already commented here...
It really made sleep token sound more in line with classical but metal. Im not sure what they are considered now they are an odd band compared to a lot of others. They do their thing beautifully.
Honestly, I love the rhythm and energy he brings to this. Imagine being sat down and handed something ‘blind’, and you come out the other side with this. I think it’s a really solid adaptation, if you will, and dude has nothing to be embarrassed about. I really enjoy these videos, and this is one of the best so far
His eyes lighting up when he realizes that he did well is awesome
You don’t give this song to a drummer who can’t handle it. Dude is a fucking animal
You're wrong Greyson. This video wasn't embarrassing. Loved it!
@darkmetal825I think I might like Greyson’s version better than II’s. He puts so much more feeling into it! II isn’t bad, but man this rendition slaps.
@darkmetal825lmao. If this is sarcasm you should make it clearer.

Greyson clearly knows metal and metal drumming, but it's crazy how much his "hybrid jazz" style playing already fits into what the new era of metal drummers are currently doing

th-cam.com/video/tAXdMCTLboc/w-d-xo.html
It is a 12 episode docu show about the beginnings of metal and about the main genres.
@@coryyori6630same!!
So how does a jazz drumer become this wicked with the double bass? Thats INSANE. And the fact that he somehow landed on doing the drum & bass groove and even the same cymbal phrases. Wow.

It's a little known fact that the double bass originated from jazz. It's just much more commonly used in metal now compared to any other genre.
As musicians, everyone hits a wall or a learning curve that feels impossible in the moment. It's inspiring to see how Greyson handled the uncomfortable experience.
Can we get II in there to play a Grayson drum solo?
That kit just got absolutely sacrificed to Sleep. Grayson gave it 100. Such a weapon. Full noise and full respect.
I like how he went from overwhelmed and nervous to killing it though. Sleep Token sounds amazing.
That he can make a pretty standard jazz kit sound this heavy is a feat in itself.
Not only a pretty standard kit, but it was also pretty close

I don't know this tune at all, but I think making Greyson angry and off-balance really helped how he interpreted the drum part. The music calls for undisciplined edginess, which Greyson delivered in spades, although in the practice room I bet he's the most disciplined player alive.
