In my opinion Gavin is the best drummer on the planet right now. His ability to be very tasteful musically but still be apart of the band makes him special. He's learned the most valuable lesson of drummers.... he knows when to play and when NOT to play. I saw him last year for the first time and it was almost a religious experience. It was, hands down, the best concert I have ever seen and I've seen many of them in my 53 years.
You should check out Gavin playing Cheating the Polygraph live with Porcupine Tree. Specifically the live in Tilburg version with the whole band. There’s a solo one but it’s in more of a big band jazz style and doesn’t translate as well in my opinion.
Had the extreme pleasure of seeing him with Pineapple Thief. Very creative, very humble , genuine genius. I must admit his work seems to fit better with Porcupine Tree. Him and Steve Wilson are amazing
I found out about Gavin Harrison from a Neil Peart interview (2007) were he was asked about new up and coming drummers that he liked and Gavin was at the top of Neil's list. 👍
"I love his fills. He uses all the drums and cymbals". This is the reaction to this... This 7min solo has everything. Creativity, dynamics, odd signatures, etc. It is pretty much a solo but it still blends into the song perfectly, not dominating completely but not staying behind. "I love| his fills"....
He did a drum week appearance on David letterman years ago (Neil Peart did one as well) that is worth checking out. Believe Gavin plays the chicken with the band then goes into his very creative solo.
He really got me into the subtlety of drumming. The rhytmical element (lifted from afroamerican music) is what sets modern music apart in complexity from the music of earlier periods.
@@TheGhostNotePodcast You really should check out the full live from Tilburg: th-cam.com/video/kgwgtERCVI4/w-d-xo.html I bet you do not even realize how fast time flies when you are enjoying a great performance. ;D I was in their concert in Stockholm this October and the three hours they played just ... flashed by. :)
You should see the live video of this song. There's an entire section of the song that was omitted due to this being a clinic he was putting on. Also the version of "21st Century Schizoid Man" with King Crimson has a drum solo in it that you'll need your rubber underwear to watch.
This drum clinic version is > 5 minutes shorter than the studio track. Watch the Live in Tilburg concert footage for the full experience. It’s the slower quieter parts where Gavin really shines
Man, I'm a huge fan of Gavin and Gavin's drumming, I've been lucky enough to watch him live several times with King Crimson, The Pineapple Thief and last year with Porcupine Tree, he is an absolute beast. You should check his work with the bands I mentioned before. Hats off to Gavin Harrison. 🤌🏼🔥
Seen the Great One 4 Times playing with KING CRIMSON . Seen Bill Bruford as well with Crimson. Today Gavin is the Best out there. Can do it All. Very Tasteful and Musical 🎼 Monster as well. His work with PT. Pineapple Thief is Tremendous. His Skills are off the Charts. But shows Restraint and serves the music. There's nothing he can't play. That's what separates him.
This is literally only the middle of the song. The first half is very interesting and more rhythmically interesting. Gavin is a reserved player...he actually plays the music and doesn't show off much.
Great clip! But this is only a portion of "Anesthetize." I recommend watching (listening) to the whole song, as well as other Harrison work with Porcupine Tree and King Crimson!!!!
Gavin has forgotten more than most musicians will ever learn.

Easily. 👏👏
a "next generation Gavin" is now playing in Sleep Token :)
@@shishisong13 uhhhhh no.
You have got to love when someone discovers Gavin !!!
Incredible drummer. Seen him live 3 times now with Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief. Effortless and so clean.
Just need a Crimson gig. Shame it wouldn't be with Bill Reiflin (RIP).
I like 90s PT a lot, but he elevated this band to new heights when he joined. He’s an absolute monster.

Thank you for the suggestion! We will definitely check it out very soon.
Gavin is the tastiest of drummers.
Maybe check out some Baard Kolstad.
Welcome to my favorite rabbit hole. Way out of Here live from Tilburg (Porcupine Tree) is my favorite Gavin Harrison showcase piece.
Happy Drumming!
Had the extreme pleasure of seeing him with Pineapple Thief. Very creative, very humble , genuine genius. I must admit his work seems to fit better with Porcupine Tree. Him and Steve Wilson are amazing
Imo the best blend of technique/machinery/speed/wit/soul drummers ever

Arturo, thanks for sharing the genius of Gavin! Liked, subbed, shared. "Happy Drumming"
Thank you! I’ll definitely check out more of his work. I really dug this play through.

Watch Porcupine Tree live their song called The Hate Song. Gavin is Awesome in it. A real jam session!
Groove for days.. Smoothest fills as well. Love his drumming.

Ya those splashes are where its at!!! He uses all the symbols well! Every cymbal is utilized and has its place!

you heard the name a couple of times? where have you been living? :)) this guy is one of the most brilliant drummers ever.
Always loved Gavin's work. A Drum God
One of my favorite drummers, where's the last 10 minutes?
Dude. I pissed myself the I saw him play this live. @5:33 shows what kind of monster this guy is...
Seen the Great One 4

Seen Bill Bruford as well with Crimson.
Today Gavin is the Best out there.
Can do it All.
Very Tasteful and Musical 🎼
Monster as well.

00:50 - not splashes, those are crotales
Gavin has it all
I keep Gavin Harrison and Mike Portnoy at the top of my drummers list. I love listening to either one at any time. Tasty!
Check out “Futile” by Porcupine Tree. Gavin’s drumming is absolutely clutch. I’ve seen him live several times. He’s always most impressive.
If you like that you will LOVE Gavin Harrison - white mist on Vic Firth 😁
Gavin also plays for the band Pineapple Thief
This is literally only the middle of the song. The first half is very interesting and more rhythmically interesting. Gavin is a reserved player...he actually plays the music and doesn't show off much.
Men, it’s really hard to achieve that sound (specially that ghost notes playing a loud metal song)
Absolutely sick and very tasty
Here’s an older video from Gavin’s book, “Rhythmic Designs”. It blows me away every time I see it….

Gavin is one of a kind. No sh*t
This is only part of the 17 minute song. You should do the whole song.
This is only a demo, the full song is 17 minutes long
You should watch Thomas Lang - Time to see the most crazy independence on drums ever...
Gavin Harrison and Danny Carey can't be analyzed in a traditional way.. They came from the future.
Check out "futile" from this same drum fest... its freakin awesome lol
