Lasya is form of Dance performed by Goddess Parvati. It is form of dance opposite of Shiva's Tandav. While Tandav is aggressive in nature, Lasya is graceful.
Lasya is the feminine complement to the male. So it portrays femininity, beauty, grace and elegance. All aspects performed to perfection in this piece :)
@That Sports Guy please check the words I used in my comment above: "feminine" and "femininity". These words have absolutely nothing to do with feminism. Please use a dictionary to get the meanings :)
Two days ago I tried to play a sitar. Damn, it's HARD! It's not a guitar, not a single bit of similarity. The action is very high, ca. 2 cm, so, at first you can't believe you can play it. But you can, and that droning sound just takes you away. Now, I look at Anoushka and wonder, how easy it looks, playing this thing. But it's not that easy at all! Great player, great instrument!
I realy can't understand those who disliked 😯 , I am not Indian , but I listen to her lovely sitar plays every day and moment since I first listened to her heavenly sitar plays when her father was teaching her , but I am sure that those dislikes are real and from the heart , because they are from ostads and the opponants that don't like to see her brightness , but they can't hide her glory , brcause she is a SHINING STAR , with love ANUSHKA dear

Anoushka, please don’t let this beautiful and extraordinary talent which you have pass away. Carry it on to your child or whoever is capable enough to take it forward. Your father, the great ravi shankar did a marvelous job in cultivating your talent. I adore your music. Much love
Well, she's pretty undeniable. Not sitting "correctly", playing in western 4/4, a white guy on percussion... she's definitely breaking the Indian rules of the instrument. But I think its a good thing. She's bringing that beautiful instrument to a wider audience and - some people forget - her father broke the rules too.
Technically its 8/4, 8 beats before the 1 of each phrase, I didn't count the chorus, that might be different. Very different from the odd time signatures of trad Indian which can be in 13, 11 1/2, etc, which is actually the point I'm making. I studied sitar with Harihar Rao, who was (now deceased) with the family. In my first few months of lessons all we did was count time. Playing in any kind of western time was taboo and looked down upon. Anoushka is not taken seriously by the trad (male) Indian players. Way too many "now you're supposed to"s in my book. I love Anoushka, I've met her, she's a total sweetheart. I never agree with the "supposed to's of music. Seems very anti-creative to me.
David Evans Yes, music has it's mathematical/structured/formatted side, and then it has its purely inventive side. As much as people want the comfort and familiarity of the one, they want the innovations and leaps (the heart/soul) of the other.
"Not sitting "correctly" - When John McLaughlin started playing with Shakti sitting cross-legged on the floor way back in 1975, people thought he had lost his mind!
Anoushka Shankar - Lasya Anoushka Shankar (Born 9 June 1981) is a Bengali/Tamil sitar player and composer. She is the daughter of Ravi Shankar and the half-sister ofNorah Jones. th-cam.com/video/3aWIuJGZHGU/w-d-xo.html
Ahhh...!!! 3 minute 50 seconds of heavenly melody! Thank you so much Anoushka and the co-players!!! Also remembrance of Pandit-ji (Late Ravi Shankar)... Thank you Deutsche Grammophon for uploading the video!
It's been 3 days and this music is on loop. I'm completely lost somewhere when I'm listening to this. Far away from all the material problems. Thank you Anoushka ma'am for this unbelievable music.
This moved me to tears.. not because the music is melancholic.. but it evoked a feeling in me which could find its expression its release only in tears
Good to see this! I was thinking I was the only one who had tears in my eyes. And as you put it, it is not melancholic. I don't even know what emotions I had going through me. I just had tears in my eyes. So beautiful.
My day doesn't end without listening to this composition. One word, world-class sitar performance. Anoushka Shankar has outdone herself with Traces of You. Beyond flawless and an out of the world experience. Blessed to be here to enjoy such master pieces. As your name means, please grace the world with your music Anoushka ji!
Very beautiful piece....and it mellowed me out for the day. When she smiled I saw her father in her face...... I have a 12 string guitar....More strings than I want to deal with....But how many in THAT Sitar? Whew.... Looks like it'd take a full day just to tune it!
+6 String Fan there are different variants of sitar and can have a max of 22 strings but only 6 is what i think are played actually rest are resonance strings :) but anyway you have to deal with tuning it... agree :)
Mesmerizing to say the least! I lived with one of her cousins- Udayan Ghosh, so, I know the power of their music. By which, I mean, the Shankars' can make the Gods dance, both in human real world, as we perceive it; and the celestial world beyond. Great Music, with no need of a human voice :)
Anouska you live 1000 years or more to play like this .. bring down the heaven on earth. ....LASYA is your one of tremendous melodies ..... such a calmness ... goes inside heart.... I can feel the dance in silence ... my heart pounds at times with the sweetness... the blend of rhythm and melody is amazing.....God bless you..
Imagine an Indian Girl With Long Hair walking in a dancing motion & look at her Hair oscillation in a wave form is the Speciality of This Charukesi Raga of Carnatic Music ... Great Compilation
She plays like heaven! I love this one! Hang goes with sitar wonderfully. Oblique harmonies! As always with Indian music, the drums are spectacular, vocal drums, too.
The most melodious instrumental.......!!! I like all the instruments of Anoushka.....!! Trace of you is one of the best classical instrumental albums.......!!
Mujhe raag ki jaankaari nahi lekin bahut sundar bajaati hein aap . It always touches soul. Wish to see your live performance . May you live long . Our blessings are always with you.
Incredible. Artists like her are keeping our beautiful culture alive in a time where it's "uncool" for you to be in touch with your roots and heritage. God bless, they're all so talented.
Stunning, every note. Composition and execution, so gorgeous and with humor too. With just three musicians I feel like we can literally hear every note. And I love that last sliding up note! Thank you Anoushka for all your years of learning that have brought us your gorgeous compositions. And thank you to the other two players...sadly, I do not see your names in the credits. I have listened 4 times so far, and will be listening some more.
I met her and her sitar about 15 to 16 times and wonder every time if is she a goddesss from paradise and a great architect at court of Lord Indra's musician court
"If they Disliked what i liked... then they might have found something better..." Seriously ? Don't be this Gullible... and have some respect for the Artist's hard work.
I like it when her eyes would be closed during the denouement and just after it finishes she would smile and open her eyes as if awaking from a wonderful dream. God bless her. :)

There rules of Ragas and Talas only come into play when someone is practicing Raga through their instrument or vocally...
