Here's the thing about this game: it's been alluded to by several commenters correctly that the game can become very dry; rolling dice, flipping cards, etc. It is NOT an RPG. There is no roleplaying element in the game. I have found that creating a homebrewed roleplaying component really, really adds to the replayability and fun, and SIGNIFICANTLY improves the experience. I won't go into details, but for example: Allow players to take random boons from the box in exchange for good roleplaying. You can do this once a scenario at the end, but you can also do it immediately if consensus is that a player is roleplaying extremely well. The point is: think outside the box here. This isn't an RPG, but it could be with just a little imagination -- something that RPG players should have in ample supply! Be creative and come up with your own ways to add tangible rewards to the game in exchange for roleplaying!
there seems to be a second edition with a single expansion so far, while this core set seems long out of print. I found it at 37.50 and thought it was cheap lol
The basic unit of playtime is the scenario, which takes 60-90 minutes. "Adventures" are collections of linked scenarios, and "Adventure Paths" are collections of linked Adventures (in other words, a full campaign). The base set has 2 Adventures: a generic intro with 3 scenarios, and "Burnt Offerings" -- the first Adventure in the Rise of the Runelords path -- with 5 scenarios. Every 2 months, a new Adventure will come out until the full Adventure Path is completed in a year's time.
Big props to Paizo for giving me a box that's able to hold expansions and separate things nicely. After unpacking my Thunderstone Starter box last night, I find myself desperately wishing they had done something similar!
Put your character cards in sleeves and use a china marker on the sleeve. When a new player uses that character erase or remove the sleeve and put a new one on for the new player to use.
Your enthusiasm has infected me and now I ...can...not...wait... to play this. Thank you so very much for the overview. I am particularly happy to hear that this plays out very similar to an adventure/rpg in a card game format. Awesome! Great Review!
I think that the adventure pack comes in it's own box so you can box it up and it will be out of the way when you buy the first "expansion" adventure pack. then the parts of the adventure will be neatly organized in their own boxes, I guess.
Just ordered it from my FLGS up here in Toronto. I was wavering a bit between this and holding out for Firefly a little longer. You review has made the decision easier, thanks.
For those cringing about writing on the cards as well. I went and had mine laminated and we just use dry erase markers so we can wipe it clean when we need to.
Thanks for the in-depth play-by-play review! I love to know how a game works before I start playing it and with your review I almost don't need to read the rulebook :)
Awesome video again as usual! I know this is a very old video review, but I was thinking of finding this game now, and was wondering about the hand size. I know you start with the amount of cards listed on the character card, but I was wondering about when you have your hand size, and you draw a blessing and add it to your hand, do you have to discard other cards then, to get back down to your hand size, or can you have a mitt full of cards, and only draw cards when you are below the hand size? I hope that question makes sense?? LOL
He didn't say they were bad quality, he just said they were very generic. He's a dice enthusiast, and likes his dice to look pretty as well. The plain blue dice don't really do a whole lot in terms of adding theme.
That's a good idea--I think they have a mini set in this setting as well if you want to add that little bit of extra to the game. Another thing you can do (which is what I am currently doing) is put a clear sleeve on the character cards, and use a sharpie to mark the sleeve when you need to write on the cards.
Yeah, with MarcoWargamer, DrivethruReviews and Critical Game Reviews + Tom all giving things a big thumbs up; and the fact I love the Pathfinder system, made this an instant buy. Just waiting for my copy to arrive to play with my gaming/roleplaying group.
What's the re-playability like though? For instance if you go through the deck of adventure cards, will you want to pick up a new hero and go through them all again? Also, it says recommended time 90 minutes. Is that 90 minutes for a "campaign" or for one adventure?
There is a story definitely. and the expansions packs he showed briefly tell that story. they plan on regular releases every quarter to move the story along.
For those who cringe at writing on the the character cards, like I do, you can download free printable character sheets from Paizo. Go to Paizo.com and search for "Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Character Sheets"
The person who gets closest to designing an RPG Table Top game that can be played without a DM and gives the feel of an RPG is going to get my money. It looks like Pathfinder has it for now. For a card game this game is a bid pricey (and much of the artwork already existed). I wish they had made 1 background and re-used it for every monster (and another for items, etc.).
Nice review! Just played my first game of pathfinder adventure card game and really enjoyed it. The instructions manual isn't that great at covering the basics though. I was at fist very confused about the Blessing Deck and how to handle battle. A quick trip to BGG and all was well. I highly recommend watching some of the walkthrough or session videos to learn the mechanics.
Thanks. It helps to have confirmation that the game is as good as it sounds. It would be a hard blow if it didn´t live up to the expectations, this can be the best game of the year.

If your friends prefer other themes or even faster games, I'd try Fiasco (made to be played in one gamenight).
I've never really played any RPGs before, not because I'm not interested in them, but usually because I can't find many people around me (including my wife) who want games of that sort of time commitment. Does anyone think this game would serve as a good "gateway" game to introduce friends/family to this genre? Or would you recommend another game as a better introductory gate into the realm of RPGs?
I know this is old, and I’m new to these board games. I like that there are characters (different classes) and weapons and skills. So this one dont have a DM? Sounds like a perfect game for my taste.
th-cam.com/video/9WipYPIYg0M/w-d-xo.html There's an updated version launched in 2019. The link is to gentleman going through the core campaign if you'd like to see some gameplay. The old version featured in this video also has a digital adaptation if you prefer that route (I own it on Android)
its is as much luck based as any actual RPG. the idea and strategy involved is to minimize, and remove as much luck factor as possible. for example assuming a party of 4. so multiple locations for a scenario. each location is closed with a different tactic. wisdom divine, or straight strength. tactically you place the character with the best chance to succeed at that location. cleric at the temple, and the fighter in the mine, etc. just one example there are so many strategic choices to be made.
Sure, you're wrong. The box doesn't say Pathfinder Adventure Role Playing Game. It says Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. The rulebook does not say this is an RPG or an RPG wanna be. In fact, the rule actually says "This isn't an RPG." And that is the only instance of the term "RPG" to even be found in the rulebook.
If you want to play an RPG that is easy and not a huge time suck play Dungeon World. It's awesome and as a long time board gamer is my RPG of choice do it's great narrative nature. I often find RPGs for me fall apart at the combat. I usually think why not just play a board or minis game with a better combat system. DW does not suffer from this.
I think so, though it's difficult with less than three characters (not enough skill variety to meet every challenge without high risk). Just be sure to pick complementary characters...or each player could play two characters.
Tom: Don't chuck the adventure boxes! As new adventures come out, cards from older boxes will be retired. Keeping the boxes will make it easier to start again with a new group of players or characters.
Looks better than the D&D boardgames, at least this one packs a bit more story and gamey-ness. I like D&D 4E better than Pathfinder, but the D&D boardgame's just a simple version of the pen-&-paper RPG's combat system. I'd still rather play the RPGs, a bit more time invested but you get so much out of it (alternatively, play a quicker RPG like Dungeon World). I can see this being a solution if nobody wants to GM, but that's because people don't realize how fun GMing is!
I admittedly have not played the game but I can’t get over the feeling that when it comes down to it there really isn't a story in this game, which is what I want from anything that uses the RPG term. Please tell me is I’m wrong.
I tried this game at home. This game is luck plus strategy plus skill checks, skill checks, skill checks!!!!! I like games with luck and strategy to mitigate the luck. However, without playing the game before and without knowing what the next draw will be, there was no way to strategize about what cards to keep in my hand and what to discard during the first playthrough. That left the whole first game being just, "Roll the dice. See if you win. Repeat several dozen times..." I don't think I'll be buying anymore skill check games.
i think you missed the point of this game. just like its rpg big brother you should make up a story wile playing. think of it as sharing the gm/dm's role with the card deck. the deck gives you incounters that are normally planed by the gm. and you make up the narative as you go. think of the card game "once upon a time" where you use the cards just to tel a story. here you use them to tl a story and give you randomized encounters
Yeah you missed the point. You souldn´t be able to prepare for every possible option and instead lose a fight or get help by teammates. To make the decision who specialises in what, to understand what cards yield what benefit in the bigger picture, to hold on to blessings for dire situations, to know when the effort is not worth it and you have to maybe lose a fight or let some loot go.... all that is part of the game that you seem to have mostly missed.
Which I believe Tom already suggested in his video and it completely slipped my mind until I thought about it just now....this is what happens when you get old. :P
The one thing I dislike about these quick overviews is that you fail to explain or really show how a turn plays out. I mean, I get to see all the makings of a game, but seeing how it plays really helps.
Nice review Tom. Looks like a great game. Over at Crits Happen here on youtube he reviews and plays this game. It really helps seeing how to play to see if you like it.
It is a great game that I love playing but it is a big stretch from a role-playing game. You do not really assume the role of your character and speak in-character to other players to help tell the story of the fantasy setting. It is a fun adventure game where you get to choose a unique avatar to represent you. You also gain in power over time and encounter progressively more interesting challenges. So it shares many features with an RPG but lacks the Role-playing that defines the genre.
Ugh. I JUST made a bet wroth my girlfriend that I could make it until December without buying a board game. That was 2 days ago and now I just saw this review. Thanks Tom. -_-
When you learn the terms in Pathfinder it's not to bad, card quality could have been a little higher. If you play alot you would probably want to sleeve them. I thought it was a slighly better then average game, but I like Thunderstone better.
i dont own but have played several times. the card stock is in fact flimsy to my taste. this is definitely a sleever. as opposed to any game by flying frog lol.
Nope, so those of us who decide to sleeve the game will have to chuck the best-designed box ever which is depressing. Also, per other reviewers, you can print out all of the characters' cards on paizo's site for free plus it has a cool deck-list to check off too.
As much as I loved playing this with a group of friends about 4-5 times, I've been researching some other co-op card games in a box such as Marvel Legendary and Thunderstone... and those are far more simple and accessible... I'm getting tired of the dice rolling, dice combining, etc... something where you just add up numbers and know you win would flow much much quicker. I may not keep moving forward with this game, but I'll definitely keep it in my collection as a nice middle ground between D&D box game and card only game.
I have Thunderstone and both the GF and I love it (and she's not necessarily "a gamer"). It looks imposing at first but it's actually quite simple (combine your cards to buy something or combine your cards to attack something). Hope you got it by now.
Thunder stone is great as well. If you're looking for another RPG card game besides Pathfinder (and I wouldn't blame you) check out Lord of the Rings LCG. The base game won't even begin to touch the extent of the overall game experience however, so be ready to buy an expansion or two right out of the gate.
Except it doesn't call it an RPG. It calls it an adventure card game. Small, but essential distinction. Tom called it an RPG in a box, which is kind of a disservice.
Thanks for giving such a great review. Now I will never get a copy for everyone will want one. *wink* I guess I will have to just stick with the RPG for now.
I think this game would be more immersive if it had better artwork and overall card layout. Artwork has that "penciled" look, and the font and card layout looks so standard like a book report or something. Fantasy Flight did great work on their Call of Cthulhu LCG. Having said that though, Pathfinder ACG still has better gameplay. Well, can't win 'em all.
between automatic success of recharging and blessings and buffs certain characters seem never to fail. I actually thought this game was pretty bad. Repetitive and unbalanced characters plus good amount of errors in the game. Lots of good points but the gameplay failed. I hope this see better games based on this solo adventure card game. I sold my copy. But I saw a few player created variants that seemed to add more to the theme and help the game out. Wished I tried those out first. Weird how I see tons of negative comments about this game but not many bad reviews. Guess people who hate a game will never bother taking the time to do a review.
Oh dude, I wish that he would stop that. I nearly cried once, I can't remember which game it was but I do remember that the FLGS wanted $80 for it and he just dropped all over the table. My one escape is that I enjoy picking out components that I recognize and I'm genuinely happy when the cards land in packs lengthwise so as not to scratch or scuff. Otherwise, yeah, Tom needs to stop doing that.
At 3:30 when the video actually starts I already was so bored I wanted to click away because the first 3 minutes are mostly about the box the game comes in and at 5 min so far all I know that is useful is "This is what a character card looks like"
Here's the thing about this game: it's been alluded to by several commenters correctly that the game can become very dry; rolling dice, flipping cards, etc. It is NOT an RPG. Just got his for 2 bucks at my local thrift store and it was almost in perfect condition.
Can't wait o star playing!
HOLY SHT thats a steal
I've only played a few times, but yeah probably the best find I've had in years
Mine was R980 :(
2 bucks !!? What lol ?
there seems to be a second edition with a single expansion so far, while this core set seems long out of print. I found it at 37.50 and thought it was cheap lol
If you don't like marking the cards, cut the sticky part off a post it and use it to mark the box as checked. Should work fine.
The basic unit of playtime is the scenario, which takes 60-90 minutes. "Adventures" are collections of linked scenarios, and "Adventure Paths" are collections of linked Adventures (in other words, a full campaign).

I love these videos. I just hate when he dumps all the stuff out.
I can't stand it, either, it's a shocking neglect for the quality of your game pieces. I'm glad someone else said something.
Put your character cards in sleeves and use a china marker on the sleeve. When a new player uses that character erase or remove the sleeve and put a new one on for the new player to use.

Thanks for explaining/summarizing what the game concept is. I hadn't been able to pin point it.

10th-most-watched Dice Tower review (as of November 28, 2016).
Bummed I didn't get to demo the game for you at Gen Con, Tom, but very glad you enjoy the game!
Thanks for the in-depth play-by-play review! I love to know how a game works before I start playing it and with your review I almost don't need to read the rulebook :)

Great production value on this video! This game looks like a lot of fun, going to buy the next chance I get.
There should also be slot for your reading glasses in the box, the letters are microscopic.
That's a good idea--I think they have a mini set in this setting as well if you want to add that little bit of extra to the game. Love the Group shutting the door

Also, it says recommended time 90 minutes. Is that 90 minutes for a "campaign" or for one adventure?
It's been a long time since I watched a Tom Vassel video.
There is a story definitely. and the expansions packs he showed briefly tell that story. they plan on regular releases every quarter to move the story along.
Are there any character sheets provided that can be copied and used instead of the cards? I would never start drawing stuff on cards in a game..
For those who cringe at writing on the the character cards, like I do, you can download free printable character sheets from Paizo. Go to Paizo.com and search for "Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Character Sheets"
Really enjoy the RPG system, and I just placed my order with some birthday funds for the Card Game, Thanks for the great review.
I've got it on order. I hope I like it. Should I laminate the cards?
Always laminate your cards dude.
Thanks dude
Can the cards fit in the box if the are sleeved
Tom will redo PTACG with the newest Mummy set its expansions? Do you still feel the same about this game years later?
i see a little space above the smash up box tom
It's meant to be an overview, not a playthrough. There is a game play video linked on boardgamegeek.
The person who gets closest to designing an RPG Table Top game that can be played without a DM and gives the feel of an RPG is going to get my money.
It looks like Pathfinder has it for now.
There is a part of me though that wished it followed the Pathfinder rules rather than it's own subset, but I can see the necessity.
This is a tough one, I'm going to Essen in October and I'm setting up my shopping list. This game is definitely nominated for that. I love the idea of a co-op RPG card game that does not require a dungeon master but i'm a bid disappointed in the visual look of the cards (the "white background" you mentioned).
A good faster gateway D&D/Pathfinder style RPG is Dungeon World. Only the DM needs to read the book and understand the game well, the rest of the players play very intuitively, and the PDF is free. If your friends prefer other themes or even faster games, I'd try Fiasco (made to be played in one gamenight).
Will this rival decent in Char building style game??
What are the games he mentioned, when he says "In fact this is kind of, in my sense, a sister game to the .... systems"?
There are dungeons and dragons board games which was what he was talking about
"Wrath of Ashardalon" and "Castle Ravenloft"
I've never really played any RPGs before, not because I'm not interested in them, but usually because I can't find many people around me (including my wife) who want games of that sort of time commitment. Does anyone think this game would serve as a good "gateway" game to introduce friends/family to this genre? Or would you recommend another game as a better introductory gate into the realm of RPGs?
Watch the dice falling into the tower on .25x speed and tell me you don't feel HORRIBLE for the 'lil guy.
Would love to see an updated review with a current deck 😊❤️
I know this is old, and I’m new to these board games. I like that there are characters (different classes) and weapons and skills. So this one dont have a DM? Sounds like a perfect game for my taste.

There is no doubt this will be in the top 10 of the top 100 best games in this year.
how this one compare to the LOTR living card game of fantasy flight?
Such a great game. Been playing it to death lately.
Great review, love your rambling Tom, keep going :-)

True but its about as close as you can get without a DM
Tom, did you play Relic?
If you want to play an RPG that is easy and not a huge time suck play Dungeon World. It's awesome and as a long time board gamer is my RPG of choice do it's great narrative nature. Wow the cards sound "heavy" when hitting the floor/table.

Thank you for this very informative video.

excellent review tom
I used the penny sleeves and they fit in there no prob
...wow. Thanks a lot, Tom! I'll definitely be buying this one! =)
At the beginning of the video I was like "Is Tom gonna do that thing where he- WAIT. Tom! Nooooooooo~ D:
Nice review Tom. Looks like a great game. Over at Crits Happen here on youtube he reviews and plays this game. It really helps seeing how to play to see if you like it.
I love the component drop, and seeing/knowing how squeamish it makes other people only increases that enjoyment.

Ugh. I JUST made a bet wroth my girlfriend that I could make it until December without buying a board game. That was 2 days ago and now I just saw this review. Thanks Tom. -_-
is this easy to run?
i love the component drop, i believe the people who like it don't bother commenting more about it
Pre-ordered!
great review thanks :)
Bought mine last Night yay!!
I guess after playing a normal pen and paper rpg, this just don't scratch the itch.
I got 2 of each dice with my box :)
You have to draw on the cards? Better than Talisman? Does not compute.
Start today new game! Great Game! 2018 :)
Startet just some weeks ago. Still gerat game!
I think he means Talisman wanted to be a short version of a fun epic adventure without the need for a DM....
Awesome review :D
Go ahead and buy it dude, its ok, tell her its a card game not a board game.
Nope, so those of us who decide to sleeve the game will have to chuck the best-designed box ever which is depressing. Also, per other reviewers, you can print out all of the characters' cards on paizo's site for free plus it has a cool deck-list to check off too.

Great review. Dear Paizo, shut up and take my money.
Sounds great, and way better than the D&D boardgames (Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon).
Thanks for the review. U rules!
between automatic success of recharging and blessings and buffs certain characters seem never to fail.
Guess people who hate a game will never bother taking the time to do a review.
paizo (παίζω) in greek means "i play".
Got a LOT of play out of this game, but it gets really boring after a while.
dungeon world
At 3:30 when the video actually starts I already was so bored I wanted to click away because the first 3 minutes are mostly about the box the game comes in and at 5 min so far all I know that is useful is "This is what a character card looks like"
It's very important for a potential buyer to know what the components look like and what sort of storage it comes with.
Well, this is essentially a CARD game not a BOARD game :P
