      Depends if u want a sample heavy vanilla work flow or ur after something that can do pretty much everything. The sample work flow complaint doesn't actually exist. You simply import the sample to a drum bank, use the slice tool & discern where u want the slices to be, & then export those chunks onto pads. It's actually quite easy, so you DONT have to import the same sample twice...
      As for Akai units, tbh the Akai force is a MUCH better tool than an mpc, with better integration with other gear, ableton compatibility, auto sampler, all the latest Akai inbuilt synth engines, works as a perfect ableton interface (along with the fact u can take it with u) and probably one of the most important things, scene interrupt... Basically when playing live, you can drop a one measure break or roll before the next scene on the fly, regardless of the length of clip & scene duration /measure count.
      THAT is a bigger deal considering the fact that if u want to inject a roll or a break into a 16 step clip or sequence, you either have to wait till it reaches the end of those 16 steps, OR edit the clip to be 12 steps, then insert the 4step variation. Then copy that & make whatever changes u need.
      If u could interrupt active clips, like the Yamaha RS7000 or RM1x & Force, u DONT have to make copies of the tracks you're wanting to interrupt, u just simply make a one measure/4 beat scene with mute memory, sacrificing only one scene once, which carries ALL the variation breaks & transiting breaks, & drop those on a a needed.
      Scene interrupt is the most important thing on these kinda memory eating devices.. Saves ALOT of double handling.
      The mc707 is a phenomenal synth box but no 'copy partial one to partial two' (which is bizarre...)
      Crazy fx module unrelated to the synth section resources (ie doesn't kill resources, CPU or polyphony), clever scatter (think break tweaker, stutter edit in a box).. The sequencer is kinda weak & after all this time,( & the fact there's a slide button right in the centre of the pad bed) it still doesn't behave like the tb3.. If it's step recording actually behaved like a tb3, itd make life easy & you wouldn't need an arpeggiator.
      Lotsa issues that need ironing out, for record on note to basic arpeggiator needing alot of work. If the ancient mc303 can have THE best arp I've ever used, there's no reason this should be without it. The coding for it is literal kilobytes, hell it's an mc303 ... There's also lack of user library BUT u CAN make a global project & copy blank clips with ur patches on it which you access whenever & wherever you need. It doesn't have the real time track mixing of the old 505 & 909 but u can access clips & put them into a track. Similar intent but different process & execution & as you've got 16x columns at 8x rows/tracks, so long as sound source is set to clip & NOT track , u can literally have ANY clip on ANY track.. And unlike Ableton, you DONT have to have clips line up. Ie imagine clip 1 track 1 has basic kick & hats, rolling non stop.. track 2 clip 1has vocal or pads etc & next few measures you start your bass line down at clip 7 (still on track 2) , all the while, track 1 clip 1 kick & hats is still playing.. Now u can make 64 variations of these type of combination of clips.. THAT is a clever use of limited memory & resources & quite efficient as u don't have to copy paste duplicates of the same clips /loops. This leaves space for other clips...
      but in a nutshell, as a whole, it's more than enough of an all in one for most people's needs.
      With this, I use it as a master for 2 Yamaha's (rm1x & rs7000) giving me 40 tracks to play with, 32of those interruptable with finite phrase /clip editing like an oldskool tracker, (if you've ever seen how oldskool jungle or psy trance is made, this'll make sense to u...
      My set up is all live & all in real time controlling all my other hardware, not limited to 16 midi tracks (up to 40 controllable channels if I need AND interfacing with the pc sending all midi channels & all audio channels out on individual channels to Ableton for finishing /mastering. It's a neat powerful set up & doesn't actually need the pc to get a decent epically ridiculously complex sequence.
      Good luck with whatever you choose!!

    Dno if you figured this, but at the 13.30min mark, you're trying to use the one sample across multiple pads, & triggering different parts of the sample with a respective individual pad hit...
    You CAN actually do this.. Just import the sample, & use the loop chopper /slicer & do it manually. The tool will also spread each slice frm ur sample across the pads automatically or manually.
    So you DONT have to import a sample twice...

    Best way to sample on both MC-101 and 707 is to use the Drum Track, you also have to import the sample for each pad individually (don’t copy from one pad to another), now you can freely edit the samples without affecting the other pads.

    Watched this video with avid attention, well done thank you! Just two quick questions: How does the sequencer in your opinion stack up against the sequencer in elektron boxes (DN, DT etc.) or the Arturia drum machines re ease of use and available options? I get you're a HipHop Guy with a sample based workflow, but what do you think: Would it make sense to get this box for someone who'd use the synth engine/drum tracks? Cheers!

    • @AccurateBeats
      @AccurateBeats  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think the sequencer of the 707 is the big selling point of the device and I guess it can be compared with the electron devices a little bit.
      Since the seq is step based in its core and layout I actually find this one easier and more straight forward to work with than the Electron boxes. I only have the Model: Samples myself but compared with that.. I definitely find the 707's sequencer to be a bit easier to work with. Sure... You cant change the actual sample that plays on the different steps like yu can on the digitakt or model samples but besides of that... I like the 707 more.
      The Arturia drum machines also has pretty great sequencers but they're not as flexible as this one is. Since its also an all-in-one unit I must say that the 707 is a really good product.
      I'll use the drums and synth tracks on this one myself a lot even though I love my samples :D

  • @foulchild
    @foulchild 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    it's one of those workflows where you have to sample INTO it, and do one of those drum programs, but instead of sampling 1 minutes worth of data in each pad, you just find the 5 seconds you want to use and sample those individually onto the pads. It's slow in some ways, but it's just as fast if not quicker in other ways. Seems more like this device isn't really suited for sample-based beat making though....or maybe it is, because it's nice that it has the built in synth sounds and stuff, and the sequencing seems okay, the way it arranges i think is the real bread-winner with this, they've got to tweak the sampling stuff a whole bunch though.

    8 scenes should be at least 16, 64 would be great. The fact that all the samples on the SD card are in one big folder, no subfolder available is my biggest gripe with this unit. But yeah, updates can fix this.

      The mpc yeah if you only sample or use “sample packs” but if you want to design/build your own sounds from scratch via drum synths and powerful synth engines (it has the Juno in it among other Roland classic engines) then your still searching for something to “check all the boxes” like this or the MV-1 (maybe) cause I was super disappointed by Akai’s lack of vst support or anything beyond the joke of a “tube synth” that was thrown in as an afterthought…. I prepaid for an MPC 1 last year and after 3 months of seeing demos trickle out and no improvement, I canceled it for a refund.

  • @boogiebong
    @boogiebong 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Couldn't you use the method Red Means Recording used in his video to chop samples? He made it look real easy chopping a longer sample and assigning them straight to the pads. I'm guessing this piece would fasten my workflow quite a bit because I chop my samples with a 404sx and bounce between my 505. I usually start by chopping up a break into pieces and then do the same with the samples (or vice versa). This would add a mute group as well

      Umm.. I dno if the 8s needs to be replaced, but they're virtually identical in the sound creation & pcm/wav side of things, despite actually sounding a lil different due to the chains in which they operate. What u can do with the mc though, is get different variations of the drum kits you want & create a drum bank, which can be used as a one shot trigger bank, or plonk 4 samples on one tone track, allocate key group & various key triggers for pitch, & literally tweak each sample in its own partial, like a real synth, using those respective samples as oscillators, Inc lfos, filters etc.
      They're different machines and Roland were actively ensuring that any comparison is minimal. Honestly, the mc is trying to do too much & it's copping alot of flak for its weaknesses (&there are many of those issues overlooked) such as basic legacy track & rhythm part mutes. @@BoBeats I know that driverless cars are soon to be the norm..but....to me..building a groovebox without a metronome is like building a car without a steering wheel...
      :P
      When you told me it had no disk streaming...I was pretty disappointed.
      I wish someone made a black music 1010, slash MPC, Live slash MC707, that one could use as a multitrack looper/sequencer/arranger/mixer and sample/sound-library Station, for dawless jotting down of ideas.

    • @BoBeats

      @@V4D2 totally agree. Disk streaming and metronome are a must. I hope they add count in too. Its super weird that it doesn't have it. Blackbox seems like fun. But. All of these devices has pro's and con's depending on what features you want. Blackbox doesn't have any real hands on control almost, compared to the 707. And no synth. Its like its impossible to get the perfect machine.

      @@BoBeats In deed!
      It's pretty unfortunate.
      It's not like these issues (specially disk streaming) are unknown...
      I would've bought the MPC Live, or the Force, had it not been for this (non)feature.
      Still, i prefer the Mixer-like interface, on the 707. The screen is pretty small though.. and Roland keeps giving us a LOT of sound-design features..which.. to me, at least, are somewhat overkill in a unit like this.
      I'm probably not right.. hehe.. but i'd risk saying most ppl don't want these units for producing music as a final product package.
      They (we?) want it mainly for jotting down ideas.. for creation..editing...Experimenting!..
      And after that we can export and go to a more thorough&complete platform, like Ableton, or Logic..ProTools..etc.
      Roland's PCM sounds are pretty solid, imo.. so i am guessing i'd prefer those to, lets say.. Akai's libraries, on the MPCs.. but hey,
      Give me a standalone :
      . MC707 interface, sequencer & PCM Library
      . MPC live I/O & screen, portability
      and Ableton Link integration
      WITH
      disk streaming
      and i'll glady pay 2k€ for it, even..

    • @PedroAnastazi
      @PedroAnastazi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, thats what i been tryin to figure out.
      Mines in storge atm so i cant fish it out to check, but this unit NEEDS legacy MC mute options.
      IMO the top row of 16 smaller scene (and step record) buttons should be assignable to scatter or mute, or scenes or mute memories, or a combo of mute memories and scenes.
      Hell even using the track select button under the slider as a mute would be workable..
      This machine needs more tweakability and customisation.
      The 2 rows of 8 pads, should be optioned to be set up to behave like the legacy MC's.
      This pad 1 ( top left) is its respective rythm track. Activate the individual mutes in that drum track with a hit of the shift key or turn the 16 step record buttons into mutes for the 16 pads in whatever drum track is selected.
      Make sense?
      Using legacy mute set up is much more efficient than shifting from one mode to another.
      The top row of 8 pads operates IDENTICALLY to the legacy MC's.. and track one is default drum track "R" track.
      Or as there are 16 pads/sounds in said drum track, just plop them along the step recorder... its not as pretty but it's functional as a mute shortcut
      I THINK scatter would be a way to work around this instant access weakness, or use the MC707 max4live and vst editor.
      Thats all i can think of..

I knew only 8 tracks on 707 would annoy me, but little==critical details you gave and what BB and LP shown as well, makes me think not give up on Standalones just yet. My needs in samples are smaller than yours, but it seems I will have no issue to put individual shorter Hang Drum samples on 707? ..... and also "go bananas" diving deep into the synth :) ... oh, one more question, how 707 pads feel against the MK3?
