The Amazon battery is much thinner than a Duracell and does not give as good an electrical connection. The Amazon battery I installed did not work or worked for a brief moment. then I discovered it is too thin to work in Honda remote. Lousy batteries! Duracel battery is thicker and putting in a Duracell solved my problem with el cheapo Amazon battery.

OMG You’re the BEST. My son’s wife accidentally soaked my son’s Honda HRV fob in the ocean. He brought it to me because it wasn’t working (lock/unlock/trunk open/close buttons not working. I replaced the 2032 battery (Panasonic brand)but still no go. Then I noticed the red led light wouldn’t even blink. You pointed out the possible poor contact along the sides of the battery. I slightly bent those contacts towards the edge of the battery and that solved the problem. The water exposure issue was very brief and there was little if any water in the fob. I think that water issue diverted our attention away from the primary problem. Many thanks for posting your video.

this video and these comments saved me so much money and heartache. it was the two plastic black pieces that were folded down as many people said was the issue for them. i used some tweezers to move them out
of the way, then i put the battery in at an angle so that the battery was touching the back piece first before snapping it in. all of the sudden it worked again! thank you!

This worked perfectly for me! Those two TINY black plastic tabs that are supposed to hold the battery in place were bent down (broken) & preventing the bottom (negative) from making contact with the little spring loaded u shaped terminal when the battery was snapped into place. I just folded those tabs back, snapped them off, they’re completely unnecessary, put the battery back in… Bingo works like new!!
    Thanks for the video!

I changed a couple of Honda Fit key fob. One of them won't light up after installation of battery. I though I damaged the key fob during replacement and almost decide to buy a replacement key fob. After watching, I realized the common issue of the positive mental flaps were bent, using a tweezer to open the metal flap allowed my battery positive side to have contact, and the light is now lit and my key fob works like a charm. Thanks for saving me a few hundred dollars in dealership. Nowadays everything cost arms and legs, LOL!

I locked my 2004 odyssey while running yesterday and spare key fob did not work. After replacing the battery I realized the red light wasn’t coming on. It wasn’t a bad battery either. I cleaned the contacts and battery surface with DeOxit contact cleaner still no red light on fob. Thank you for the small detail about the plastic clips aligning the battery inside the fob (esp the positive connections). One of the plastic clips actually broke off but I could see that caused the battery to be poorly positioned. Once I slid the battery in place I made sure to get the + connection tight and that made all the difference. The red light flashed every time and my spare key fob now works perfectly. This was a great help

Thanks a bunch. This worked. For future reference to Honda S2000 owners the two very small positive prongs had backed off over time since 2001. Even a new tested energizer CR2025 had no effect. I was just about to buy a new key fob when I ran across your video. I took a tiny flathead, bent the two positive prongs forward just a bit and voila! Back to normal. Over about 4 to 5 months I noticed the buttons would sometimes work and sometimes not. It gradually got worse until today when it flat gave out. The 2 positive prongs pushed outward just a hair was enough to make solid contact once again. Subbed and liked!

Our Honda pilot was not responding to either remote. The 3 volt remote batteries were removed and tested at 3.5 Volts, so they should have been working just fine. After watching your video, I changed the batteries out with new batteries; now the vehicle responds to both remotes. An interesting note is that both of the new 3 volt batteries tested at 3.95 Volts right out of the package. So one might surmise that the remotes actually need closer to 4V, despite what the manuals say. Hope this helps someone.

I was looking everywhere for a reason why my key fob wasn’t working. I had my car for 9 months and the battery was low already so a guy from autozone helped me replace it. It worked fine at first but the next day I couldn’t unlock my door and it kept beeping and lighting up as if continuously locking and unlocking. I had to constantly take the battery out and put it back in for it to work but I wanted to avoid going to the dealership (they honestly never fixed anything I needed done and charge me for things I didn’t need)
Anyways I notice the prongs was down after watching this video, so I lifted it up a bit and it worked, but time will tell. I’ll give it the next day to see if it still works

Thank You! Had the same problem with some Duracell 2032's. Wouldn't work properly in neither a Honda Civic key fob nor a Kia Niro's. Bought some Energizer 2032's, and they worked right away. Some kind of design flaw with the Duracell's - they're not dead, tested them with a voltmeter. Just a fraction too small.

I bought some new good quality (Duracell) batteries and found that they didn't work. What I found was that although I had inserted the battery correctly, because the + symbol was not between the two contacts (as shown in the video), the remote did not work. So before you give up ensure that the battery is rotated to the correct position as I was nearly pulling my hair out over this!

Appreciate the video, but my 2020 Ridgeline key fob "eats" batteries. I get the low battery warning, change to a new battery, and within another week the battery is failing again. Fob always starts working again with new batteries, but fails soon after. I have gone through a dozen batteries in the last few months. Suggestions?

    • @ToolsElectroDIY

It sounds like the keyfob has internal issues that drains the battery. In this case it may need to be replaced.

Update I went to another auto zone to get more batteries they didn’t have them As I was leaving I saw an O Reilly auto parts store. I went in and explained to the woman behind the counter my problem she opened it up smiled and said well they put it in backwards. She turned it over and told me to check my car. It works perfectly now. Should I tell the two Auto Zone guys don’t want them to feel bad but could save someone else this problem.

testing battery voltage swing on/off load or internal resistance (current capability under load) is more important than (almost) open circuit voltage for vehicle remotes

I was not able to use the key FOB after changing the batt twice. They were prob of a cheap brand. I had to use a brand name one and it instantly worked! Note: It was working fine for months after the last time I changed the batt, but it just would not work one day. There were no "symptoms" leading up to the day that it stopped working. I did check the voltage of the batt, and it was still over 3.0 Volts.

Here's my experience. I replace the battery and still does not work. I have to drain the battery down to 3V in order for it to work. When I test brand new battery voltage is about 3.3V. I then drain it slightly using my voltmeter battery checker and get it down to 3V. Guess what, it then works. I've had to do this on Honda and Toyota key fobs. I'm guessing the fob has a voltage regulator that won't allow it to work if the voltage is too high.
