      He's alright, but he ain't good as Eddie Hazel was. May be able to copy Eddie, but he can't think like Eddie. So he'll always be in Eddie's shadow. RIP Eddie Hazel. 😢😢😢😢 Most under rated guitar player ever. Along with Prince. 😉

    Mike Kidd Funkadelic Hampton is a pioneer of modern funk, rock and metal. Mike has been playing with George Clinton since he was 17 years old. Eddie Hazel passed the torched to Mike and those who know what Mike brings to the table, knows that Mike has not let Eddie down. People need to research the history of Mike Hampton, he is definitely the real deal.

    This is Mike Hampton playing Maggot Brain as close(until about 8:00) to Eddie's original as possible. This is wonderful!!
    His ability to replicate the song note for note is what got him the job as lead guitarist with the Funkadelic when he was 17 years old while Eddie was in jail.

    Why do people hate on Kidd? The guy is P-Funk through to the core. He was lead guitarist on One Nation for christ's sake. How does it make sense to rip on a member of Funkadelic for playing a Funkadelic tune, and doing a damn fine job of it?
    Eddie was a great player, one of the most soulful of all time, but he was also an unreliable addict. George had to recruit Mike because Eddie was locked up for assault. Don't hate on Mike for stepping in and doing the job.

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      well said, i love how he plays this & adds his own bit to the ending from 8.30 onwards.. kidd stays true to form when playing this which shows pure respect & his own love for the original.. im not american so if it wasnt for this i wouldnt have known funkadelics music at all... i also love the 1979 version.. haters need to stop hating...

    • @cjsmall6346
      @cjsmall6346 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      youre right about that bro absolutely!! his addiction got the best of him but I think when people see how the memory of Eddie has been absorbed into the fan fair over Michael Hampton......it just seems trife. Eddie was like none other and its a shame he never gets or at least his memory never gets an honorable mention. But thats my take on it bro

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      cj small fair call brother, they were all great musicians, personally i dont like to compare musicians, music is about individuality, its about influences, everybody can sound like everybody else it depends on the mood etc.. thats the beauty of music, i wish people could just listen to a piece of music & just appreciate it for what it is.. this is a great version of the song, probably my fav, but it may not be someone elses & thats cool... have a good one & rock on..

      First, Michael plays a great guitar, but, seems like here he is just playing the notes, but without feeling. Secondly, let me ask you, do you love "on" your girlfriend or wife? Do you love "on" anything? No, because it doesnt make sense. You can love someone or something, but you cant love "on" it or them. Well the same goes for hate. You can hate something or someone, but you cant hate "on" it or them.

    Eddie Hazel would be 69 yrs old now (2020), I know, because I was born same year 1950 . Made many 8-track copies for my friends. Anyone who would listen could have one. So much love and pain to hear, it's almost unbearable!

    I've Never tried to compare the two...... Eddie Hazel and Mike Hampton, THEY ARE BOTH GREAT LEGENDS TO ME, and to hear them both play at the same time , and on the same song, on the same stage, is a Cosmic Treat. I'm too Absorbed in the Sounds coming from their instruments as if they ARE telling a story and asking us to ride with them on this Fantastic Journey that is Beyond anything we can ever Comprehend. Not Many Musicians can bring a Sound so Powerful that It allows tears to flow.

    I’ve been a rock pig for over 40 years; listened to ‘000s of albums in my time. A year ago during first lockdown I googled ‘greatest guitar solos of all time’ cause I was a bit bored, stuck at home. Up came everything I’ve heard before except for this one track. ‘Maggot Brain’ by Funkadelic. WTF? Funkadelic? Aren’t they a urm...funk band? Purchased the track and was utterly astonished and blown away by what I now regard as THE greatest solo of all time. It’s not just about the notes, it’s the feel (“as if somebody told you your mama just died”). I thought there were no surprises left for me - never been happier to be wrong.
    And for the curious...
    2. Baby’s on Fire - Brian Eno (played by Robert Fripp)
    3. Drive Home - Steven Wilson (played by Guthrie Govan)

      I am a musician and disagree. EDDIE poured his heart and soul into this. Mike just basically plays it deadpan, practically note for note what Eddie did. He's obviously a very good guitarist but has practically 0 feeling when he plays this song

  • @marvinberry9874

    Eddie's signature song. For anyone to pay it as he did is a tribute to Eddie. Anyone who adds their own personal style foe whatever reason is a personal choose like it is a personal choice to like which ever version someone plays. Eddie did press the mold and standard that everyone is measured with. Its all good to me.

    I can't help it! Every time I hear this song my brain goes into an amazing mix of Bi-Polar emotions and charging electrons/chemistry that both stimulates and calm's my inner spirit! Many forms of music from a wide range of musicians have that ability to bring joy to that inner spirit. I view those individual songs as messages from God that stimulate directly to the mind without words to comprehend. Often these songs are discovered by the musicians through pure chance or what one may call a sudden revelation. Me, I view them as a gift or a grace from the Heaven's above and this rhythmic masterpiece is beyond a doubt one of the best of those unique gifts to the human race!

    • @ronb1885
      @ronb1885 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not hardly! It is because of the efforts and talents that this gift from God was revealed! News, not everything that's a musician produces is a masterpiece to their credit, but if they are lucky they may get a miraculous piece of art!
