John is a great guitarist but this was a lesson. Just look at how relaxed bb king's style is and yet how completely perfect his timing is with the placement of every note. A true king of the blues
I guarantee you that John DREAMED of this moment for years before it actually happened. Kudos to him for putting himself in this position to be respected by one of the GODS of music, BB King.
So you're saying that if I paid money to watch some excessively skilled jazzers or blues musicians just jamming to background chords, I'm paying to see someone just (skillfully) messing around? Nice
indonesian bassbooster I think the jazz musicians would agree. In a professional there's not much music theory and thinking about the playing going on. They know what sounds good and have fun with it. And can draw a crowd. I can dream
His Fuckboy fuckery ruined his Blues Career and made him retreat to isolate himself with country music. Who knows what masterpieces he couldve done if he had stayed unto the path. That being said, his slow country music is a class of its own.
It's interesting seeing these two extremely different musical personalities going back and forth in a jam. John is so energetic, impulsive, and unpredictable, whereas BB King is calm, precise, and concise with his playing. Very interesting and enjoyable to listen to
John unpredictable? The nervous energy that surrounds him might seem unpredictable but actually when you listen to what he plays it's nothing out of the ordinary. He just overplays constantly without any interesting ideas. I don't think that's unpredictable, because anyone who is reasonably experienced with guitar knows it's the most common mistake people do when improvising. Don't get me wrong, I like John Mayer, but in this video he was kinda lame.
@@tiihtu2507 yes that's right. BB King had more ideas to Express. Jhon Mayer only played the same notes over an over and very fast, trying to impress. Relax boy, you're next to BB King
@@daviesquiro4089 BB King is the best when it comes to slow blues, but we all know Mayer is a SRV/Hendrix kind of player. You can't really compare at all, Mayer did hold his own in a style he's not 100% comfortable in and you can see BB appreciated that. If he can and you can't - you need to reevaluate yourself as a guitarist and musician.
I had no idea Mayer was this talented of a Bluesman! I'm impressed! To sit with THE Bluesmaster himself and hold his own is no mean feat. Well done, John.
He's a generational talent so yeah. At this point in time definitely considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Up there with all these guys. All thanks to his passion. He could have easily taken the pop route out after Gravity. Instead he remained true to his core passion. With that said, I want him to work on an album that is just him. Not meant for a commercial release but as a display of his talent and imagination as a musician.
I agree. He us at a point where he can record or perform whatever he wants whenever he wants. As many musicians frequently do, they separate their mainstream persona from their private interest persona. As an example, Ronnie Woods & Charlie Watts have/had their own bands that showcase(d) their personal musical preferences.
The stuff were it's just him and his guitar is epic. The pop culture he seems to dance around is a distraction imo. I too would love to see a solo thing.
There is a video on youtube of..... Stevie Ray.....BB King, Albert King.....Eric Clapton........Paul Butterfield..... Phil Collins.....Etta James.....Dr John.....Chaka Khan.....Gladys Knight jamming together .......one of the best blues concerts ever check it out...it's from a Showtime special back in the middle 80's
StringTherapy sadly, those days of great music and real musicians on TV, especially guitarist are over. We have utube now. Not the same excitement but whatever. Better than nothing which is what’s on TV.. nothing.
Bb has a minister’s cadence. Bb mastered the art of luring in the audience with timing, sometimes building silence before riffing like a minister would from the pulpit
Never heard anyone describe it this way. Very poetic way to articulate what’s going on and I would have to agree. Instead of speaking his guitar is the voice communicating the sermon!
I just wish John Mayer would make a strictly blues album with sounds similar to this jam. I would buy it in a heartbeat. Sure, It wouldn't do that well commercially, but blues fans and people who respect his musicianship would totally love it.
The Grime Science Reaper John is a remarkable player in his own right, and you’re correct in saying it’s seriously impressive. He really proves his mettle here as being an absolute monster on a six string.
John knows right where he is. Many guys can play. Many can sing. Few know respect. It’s true. Been around live shows much of my life. The thing is is that John Mayer’s career is driven by gratitude. He’s a talent no doubt. But he’s genuinely cool and in the end that is part of what powers those that “make it”. I guess what I’m saying is that BB King is a legend for giving us a sound. Mayer pays homage and is grateful. He wants BB to see what he is capable of now. As a child might want to show off. It’s cool.
So hard to have the vocal and musical talent that John has a true prodigy, but while John maybe even more technical then BB at this stage the way BB plays the notes the timing the "feel" is so much better its hard to describe its just awesome we are lucky enough to see this recording.
The beginning when John kept talking bb up and bb was like I’m about to get on up out of here. Johns reaction looked chill and funny but on the inside he was going... did I just ruin my dream.
BB "dropped-the-mic" years ago. He had nothing to "prove", and didn't need affirmation from anyone - no matter who he played alongside. He had so much humility. R.I.P BB
Even here, BB may not be able to play like he used to, but his mind is still in sync with the music. Every lick he plays is so tasteful. He knows exactly what the hell he’s doing, and I love to see it
Behind every great band leader, there’s a great band. The job of the rhythm section is not to make themselves sound great, but to make the lead sound even better.
im not saying its a competition but when the king steps in its just relaxing, and the way things are supposed to be. john mayer is great, dont get me wrong but the old mans got it. always has
I'd disagree. For me, King makes me wanna slow groove my body against a man's, vs Johnny there makes me feel like I smoked a joint and am just chillaxing on a couch watching a sweet little miss dance in nothing but lingerie in front of me.
In some cultures if you make that same motion but instead slam the back of your hand once and continue upwards in one motion as if your hand bounced off and up is the same as the middle finger, lol !
Listen to his Continuum album and then listen to the John Mayer Trio stuff. All gold. "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" on Continuum is my favorite. Great guitar work.
Its like a son trying to gain his father's acceptance, and Dad is just making sure he knows what's at stake. And then giving him the nod while sliding him a few notes on his way out the door. God, this is so epic, im in tears.
As impressive as they both are, can we give some love to the bassist too?? beautifully sets everything up, its so enjoyable to listen to when you focus on it
It must be genuinely indescribable for him to not only sit and play with one of his hero's and a pioneer of blues, but to have him nod and applaud him. There can't be words! John plays amazingly and far more than BB, but says less with his guitar. BB plays much less and says oh so much more. Must be such an insane and humbling experience for him
Imagine being John Mayer in this situation. He grew up listening to BB dreaming about being one of the great blues men just like him, and here he is playing next to one of the kings. I would be totally fangirling no way I could play anything resemblent of a blues solo.
BB King was a good pioneer for the guitar and the blues, but John Mayer and many others for that matter, can play BB under the table now and when he was in his prime. Thats a fact. God rest his soul. No disrespect.
1 blues icon and legend playing on stage with another icon. They are having fun hanging out with each other and playing music 🎶 🎵. This is a priceless experience and performance.
There is too much "old is always better" people in these comment sections. John Mayer is one of the best guitarist ever. Not saying that BB isn't because he definately is. It's just insult to say that someone like Slash is better than Mayer.
8:14 John's melody here is amazing and BB adds amazing chords right on the spot to that melody. I would say this is one of the best moments in this jam.
The delivery of BB is unmatched. The feel you have listening to his playing is rarely felt with any other guitarist. It is like his guitar talks the BB language!
The guitar performances are like metaphor for their respective ages. One is looking forward to great life ahead, while one is talking about how he had and still has a great life, and gives his advice to the younger generation. Thank you for the great music BB King and John Mayer 🙏🎸🎵❤️
John is so much more respectful than a lot of other white blues musicians. He never lets himself or anyone forget who made him who he is. He doesn't take credit everyone gives him and he instead passes it on to the heroes who inspired him. I say this because there have been quite a some others who shall remain nameless that emulate this style but are not as gracious or respectful as John is about it.
It’s mind boggling to think that some day an old and gray John Mayer will be sitting there and being paid homage to the way he is doing to B.B. King by some aspiring young guitarist. Music, in itself, is timeless.
I love the comments on how viewing their playing like a conversation with each other. To me, it feels like John is the young energetic one, with lots to say and lots on his mind. He's antsy and just trying to get out everything in his head. BB is like the old wise man he's talking to, telling him everything is going to be fine, and to just relax and slow down, speaking slow and tenderly. Hence why you see John playing more frantically and BB being more chill.
It’s not that BB has the technical skill that far surpasses John here, he’s mastered the timing of the blues. The quiet space between notes and the timing of each chord is effortless and perfect.
damn I started playing for things like just hearing guitar on the radio then I was off then on and then discovering blues and jazz makes you realise music is so much more
Just discovered this today... in 2019. As much as the playing is incredible, it's wonderful to see the love and respect John has for BB King - undoubtedly one of John's heroes.
John no doubts you belong amongs the greatest. I love your Passion! And i dont even wanna start about B.B King. Just that god bless his mighty Soul. Rest in Peace to the King of Blues.

I got to see BB once. He was the headliner for a blues concert. I could have listened to just him for the entirety. I bet John sobbed when he passed. RIP Mr. King
John is a great guitarist but this was a lesson. Just look at how relaxed bb king's style is and yet how completely perfect his timing is with the placement of every note. A true king of the blues
hes relax he play 3 notes
no sir, john same lvl at least
John is a legend on the guitar and King knows it
I've never seen John look so small against another guitar player. BB was an absolute legend and Mayer most certainly is too.
@@henne_senpei4159 Absolutely not. John Mayer can play the blues. B.B. King IS a bluesman.
I guarantee you that John DREAMED of this moment for years before it actually happened. Kudos to him for putting himself in this position to be respected by one of the GODS of music, BB King.
When as a musician you can draw a huge crowd that'll pay good money to see you and a friend just mess around on stage.... There's no level above that.
That's the level of the masters. This is awesome 😜
I mean i would pay anything to see BB King and John Mayer slayin .... Its basically an all star game 😂😂😂
So you're saying that if I paid money to watch some excessively skilled jazzers or blues musicians just jamming to background chords, I'm paying to see someone just (skillfully) messing around? Nice
😖😖😖
indonesian bassbooster I think the jazz musicians would agree. In a professional there's not much music theory and thinking about the playing going on. They know what sounds good and have fun with it. And can draw a crowd. I can dream
2024 already... we miss you so much!
Shout out to everybody who saw the title, knew what it was, clicked right away and enjoyed! I salute you!
The long hair era was the best phase of John mayer's life
Amen
moe like hair-a
2005-2007 was John Mayer’s prime. He was still an a list musician after that, but he was definitely one of the most popular male artist at the time
Yes
His Fuckboy fuckery ruined his Blues Career and made him retreat to isolate himself with country music. Who knows what masterpieces he couldve done if he had stayed unto the path. That being said, his slow country music is a class of its own.
I just want someone to look at me the way John looks at BB King. Pure lust.
@Louis C Fam. look at that and tell me he doesn't want to have his way with him.

The drummer did an amazing job!. Still coming back to this performance in 2022. Timeless. RIP BB.
Thank you, diana! I'm honored that my music has touched you in some way. Keep on sharing the love and spreading good vibes!
Please check this out if you liked this video. th-cam.com/video/d9eNyWFT64o/w-d-xo.html
I too would love to see a solo thing.
you gotta see him live, he's amazing
Have a look for BB, John and Derek Trucks. Truck's slide solo is mind blowing.
Imagine Stevie, Jimi and BB king were still alive and jamming together. What a day that would be!

Be more humble, settle yourself, lose yourself for sometime and then you might be a better blues artist.
@@pmckillion82 yeah just one of the greatest guitar players regularly praised by BB himself and Clapton but yeah... nobody special
I don't here anything unique coming out of Mayer. Sounds like a Berkley guitar class or amateur blues night on American idol
@Titus Tiger The world according to my view. he was so much allowed to make em
Bb has a minister’s cadence. Bb mastered the art of luring in the audience with timing, sometimes building silence before riffing like a minister would from the pulpit
B flat?
A# King
Never heard anyone describe it this way. Very poetic way to articulate what’s going on and I would have to agree. Instead of speaking his guitar is the voice communicating the sermon!
I just wish John Mayer would make a strictly blues album with sounds similar to this jam. I would buy it in a heartbeat. Sure, It wouldn't do that well commercially, but blues fans and people who respect his musicianship would totally love it.

I saw the great B.B. King in the early 80ties.
What a gift in Bremen/North Germany.
I will never forget.
BB’s tone is so heavenly
The fact that John Mayer holds his own against one of the most important people in music history is seriously impressive
It’s cool.
he doesn't
So hard to have the vocal and musical talent that John has a true prodigy, but while John maybe even more technical then BB at this stage the way BB plays the notes the timing the "feel" is so much better its hard to describe its just awesome we are lucky enough to see this recording.
john is great but he did horrible in this video
2:39 BB played a wrong note. Went for the classic 'if you repeat it everyone thinks it's intentional' vibe
Yup, there are no wrong notes if you do it twice
This is EXACTLY what I was thinking
A whole tone.
@@GrampaTracer_ repetition legitimizes
We've all made that face BB makes with that wrong note too lol
I saw BB King in concert, and to this day it was one of my favorites. I miss him!
The beginning when John kept talking bb up and bb was like I’m about to get on up out of here. Johns reaction looked chill and funny but on the inside he was going... did I just ruin my dream.
So confident & sexy!
BB "dropped-the-mic" years ago. He had nothing to "prove", and didn't need affirmation from anyone - no matter who he played alongside. He had so much humility. R.I.P BB
Lol he'd have dropped the mic 30 years ago and still have nothing to prove
pramod bhat OK.
Even here, BB may not be able to play like he used to, but his mind is still in sync with the music. Every lick he plays is so tasteful. He knows exactly what the hell he’s doing, and I love to see it
Sounded perfect to me. He was in total control.
wait so has his playing noticeably decreased since his prime?

Behind every great band leader, there’s a great band. The job of the rhythm section is not to make themselves sound great, but to make the lead sound even better.
im not saying its a competition but when the king steps in its just relaxing, and the way things are supposed to be. john mayer is great, dont get me wrong but the old mans got it. always has

nah mayer way better
I'd disagree. For me, King makes me wanna slow groove my body against a man's, vs Johnny there makes me feel like I smoked a joint and am just chillaxing on a couch watching a sweet little miss dance in nothing but lingerie in front of me.
This is a class act
Anyone who ever picked up a guitar regardless of the genre will bow and show respect to this
The way B.B king claps is actually the same gesture my mum used to make when she was about to beat me up.
sounds like the first couple lines to a great blues tune, keep going.
John B she said I could play a guitar just like a ring in a bell...good enough?
In some cultures if you make that same motion but instead slam the back of your hand once and continue upwards in one motion as if your hand bounced off and up is the same as the middle finger, lol !

Listen to his Continuum album and then listen to the John Mayer Trio stuff. All gold. "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" on Continuum is my favorite. Great guitar work.
hes def prolly one of the greatest living guitarists- his amp burns at the heat of the sun
Then why is he playing a strat at speed with no emotion?
John Mayer is fantastic... but BB King is THE Blues!!
Yeah man
Allan Costa Jardim John Mayer is an old soul. Love the guy. He doesn’t follow the herd.

BB King was a good pioneer for the guitar and the blues, but John Mayer and many others for that matter, can play BB under the table now and when he was in his prime. Thats a fact. God rest his soul. No disrespect.

all the people that got to see two legends perform
does mayer need to pass away for him to get the recognition he deserves as a master guitarist or
There is too much "old is always better" people in these comment sections. John Mayer is one of the best guitarist ever. Not saying that BB isn't because he definately is. It's just insult to say that someone like Slash is better than Mayer.
who was the 2nd legend? BB we know.
There is many, SRV is my legend tho
you fucking stupid bro
8:14 John's melody here is amazing and BB adds amazing chords right on the spot to that melody. I would say this is one of the best moments in this jam.
Still get chills down my spine hearing Lucille sing. Would give just about anything to see this live
BBs phrasing is so good. He completed every musical thought so well.

Thank you for the great music BB King and John Mayer 🙏🎸🎵❤️
man, BB King's sound is softer than butter and he played so smooth...R.I.P. good sir
Smooth but fire behind it
Stop comparing them they are playing together for a reason
John is so much more respectful than a lot of other white blues musicians. He never lets himself or anyone forget who made him who he is. He doesn't take credit everyone gives him and he instead passes it on to the heroes who inspired him. I say this because there have been quite a some others who shall remain nameless that emulate this style but are not as gracious or respectful as John is about it.
Black people don’t even have a written language lmfao
When BB King claps for you , it's the ultimate compliment. 2 awesome guitarist having a conversation. Not a compition. Just great music. Priceless.
This is frickin' amazing. What respect and honor for a legend. And what patience BB shows to the young guy!
It’s not that BB has the technical skill that far surpasses John here, he’s mastered the timing of the blues. The quiet space between notes and the timing of each chord is effortless and perfect.
10 years later, this still makes me as happy as I was the first time I heard it!
BB King is sitting there like a Dad teaching his kid. With quite a stern look on his face because he wants his son to succeed :)
this is unbelievably true
