I bought this LP as a 19 year old white boy who'd grown up in a small FL town. It was 1.00 because in 1991, no one gave a shit about used vinyl LPs. I had already discovered numerous gems already: Music From Big Pink, Astral Weeks, Morrison Hotel.( I was a Doors fanatic) , but that afternoon, I came home with Maggot Brain and the Superfly soundtrack by the immortal Curtis Mayfield. My soul would never be the same. My eyes were open and my mouth was shut. I became aware that I was a part of the universe. And it was funky.
Quite probably the greatest solo in the history of guitar. An epic and haunting song, best played at maximum volume. It is a funereal dirge I played on loop after the death of my late wife. It is one of the most emotionally resonant songs ever recorded.
