- Owen's back with the last of the four epic demos that make up the Peavey Vypyr series. Here we have the Peavey Vypyr Tube 60. Blending the functional convenience of a digital amp and the old-school vibe of a vacuum tube power section, we have to wonder: does the Vypyr Tube 60 qualify as "steampunk"?
The tube amp is really responsive with how you hit the strings. You can play softly or really loudly without having to adjust the volume level. I like it!
In fact, I ordered mine, and I get it Monday! woooo 2 days!
It works by boosting low signals and limiting high signals. Gives you a tone that is more even in volume, and it helps you sustain notes a lot longer than usual.
wow searching for two years and i finally find the amp of my dreams everything that i want on it perfect
Man, these Vypyrs continue to impress. I personally, have a 30 watt SS Vypyr and even from that the tone is great and it's incredibly versatile which is a major plus. I love how they have an all tube 120W head for $550 :D. You can't beat it for the price. Way better than Line 6 IMO
Finally got this amp and it rocks! I love its clean channel's and the distortion on this thing is just mouth dropping!
This ended up in my feed 14 years later. I still have the 120 version somewhere.
Have you found your 120 version yet?
You will be blown away. I have the same model - it's very loud. Just remember to turn down the post gain if you're playing in low volumes.
Also this is open back combo so it can be kinda "trebly" keep the highs low - anyway great amp.
Great demonstration video.
i own a the 120 watt tube head and u can play it a bedroom volumes and still even get some of the tube sounds it has a master volume and a post gain knob (level) , so u can crank the master volume and pull back on the volume using the level knob = bedroom volume tube practice :D.
Nine years later hope you figured out cranking the master and lowering the post gain does nothing lol.
Here we are 8 years later & this amp still screams..
I couldn't imagine replacing the Vypyr Tube 60, I also have a Vypyr 15w that I use in the bedroom & it rocks but has nowhere as much TONE/Sound as the Tube 60..
ROCK ON!!
I got a VIP 1 for free and thought it was a joke. until I downloaded the manual and read how to use it. holy shitballz!! amazed at what it can do. no, its not true tube action but its pretty damned impressive. now, if there were only a way to open it up and get a quality line out signal to power with a tube head. how funny would that be? everyone starts buying these for $99 and using them as a preamp and then a tube head. I have a feeling it would rock (given how impressive it is on its own). I have nothing but tube amps and I love this thing for my home office. did not expect it to be any good at all.
Still rocking my 30. I've messed around with the "VIP" series, liked some of the new features, but still prefer the original design, overall.
I’m totally new to these Peavey modeling amps. How many options did they make in the vypyr department? Particularly the tube version? And which is the best of the TransTube/ss variety?
Save presets on the amp. There's 12 savable presets slots.
Just set it to Bank A and hold the "1" button until it lights up to save the current configuration. Then hit that button (While in Bank A) when ever you need that sound again. You can have 4 sounds in each of 3 different banks.
It's pretty nifty to save your faves while every knob turn can mean another great sound.
Thanks. Only one thing left to do. Buy it :D
The tone is amazing
This is the amp we are using on all of our new songs. I have to say so far I am loving it.
I played this about a year ago and a Guitar Center. I played it for like 2 hours, it sounded so good for a modeling amp.
@ottawadrummer Because Peavey used a really cheap speak in the Vypr line-up and the tubes that are in the amp already are Biased to run colder(cheaper brand as well if I recall) and tubes only sound better the hotter they run.
Those 2 swaps can make the AMP sound much better then it did originally, and it all costs under $200 to make the change. And in most cases your connected to a PA system when playing live, if your not the venue is small enough that you shouldn't have any problems playing.
I believe you friend, I appreciate your comment. I have a Mesa Boogie MKIV and a Valve King. I am thinking of getting a tube vypyr just to mess around with. However I dont think it would be really practical for home use. I have a little 15 watt vypyr that I mess around with at home.
That's a tough choice. Both amps are very good. I've owned a Spider valve and now I own a Vypyr Tube 60. Can't go wrong with either.
Great Demo. Thank you!
Yes yes , I see. Very dynamic.
all of these amps are quite beast, the only trick is learning how to customize the presets and effects to your liking. If you master this trick, these amps are literally irreplaceable and infinitely valuable
The pre-amp tube is a phase inverter tube. . I understand that a phase inverter does impact the tone. But for the most part the tube Vypyr gets it's warmth from the power tubes. This is very similiar to the older Music Man amps that Leo Fender came out with after leaving Fender. They had a solid state pre-amp section warmed by an all tube power section. The early MM amps also used one 12AX7 phase I tube like this amp.
we've used one of these (see "Sink Attack" for example) - not bad amp at all for the price, especially if you're after a whole range of type of guitar tones. If you're after a pure clean, or a very heavy tone, look around for other stuff, like the Peavey 6505+ combo if you like Peavey.
This is a step up from the Roland Cube. I had a Roland Cube 60 and just bought a Vypyr Tube 60.
From what I understand, the 12AX7 does not affect tone as a pre-amp tube. . used as a phase inverter tube. The amp is impressive though. When playing one at Guitar Center I was impressed with the Tube Screamer setting. . they really nailed the tone on that one . . so I guess the other tones are as realistic as the Tube Screamer setting?
This is an awesome amp i played it in guitar center. It was really really nice for a combo. I meant the tube one.
I have the 120 tube and love this amp is awsom
Headphone out is also a dedicated recording output, but I'm not familiar with those devices you mentioned.
There is no "warranty card". It comes standard with 3 years (I believe), but if you register it online etc. within so many days of purchase, they extend it out to 5 years. You get no physical "card", though. It's just in Peavey's system.
can you plug a cab into the Back of this amp?
I had to sell my Mesa Boogie Electra Dyne (BEST amp I have ever owned BY FAR) and picked up one of these to fill the gap until I can afford to replace the Mesa. I dont use ANY of the effects...but rather only use the Fender Clean sound and use my Pedals for the effects. Works great!
@drugdrunkker I mostly play in drop c or d standard, this amp handles both well. the 6505 lead channel is awesome!
Ok yeah got back from Guitar Center. No it doesn't have a power attenuator, BUT it sounded good at low volumes (1) and was pretty close to the way the solid state vypr sounded. I was surprised, cause it sounded better than any of the other solid combos at this volume. I wouldn't be afraid to buy this for any setting.
so the tube version is just the normal version( if you look at the effects, stompboxes, usb ,mp3 ,the looper (at the footswitches) but just i just has tubes in it right?
So i dont lose any options compared to the peavey 75 watt?
and can i use it at small gigs and my bedroom?
you can do bedroom practice with this one, tried it in a shop, and goes very well on low volume
wow holy cow im glade to see they are hearing people tub coming back and they are new rock on
that Schecter Tempest is jus gorgeous! oh nice review too but that guitat jus made the video worth watching!
Yeah I use it in my room all the time and I still play out with it. My only issue is it's size and weight.
Why certainly. But first a few questions will help narrow this down. What genres are you into and what guitar do you have/plan on getting?
This is a great sounding amp...but it has blown some fuses in the past....I found out the fuses are hard to find...Usually when this amp starts blowing fuses (F3AL 250v) it is time to change your power tubes...onboard tuner is handy...good variety of effects
Its a massive difference between the tube version and the full solid state version
for you questioning about volume, I bought this to play at my church, and I can't turn it above, well, between 1 and 2 on the master volume. We mic the amps, so any more than that creates too much stage noise. I actually wish I would've went with the 30, the 60 turning it up to 5 is blasting. It's a great amp for gigging I'd say, but practice amp? You'd be better off with something much, how you say, less lol.
I have had this amp since my intermediate upgrade years ago but I cant decide if I should sell and invest in something that's better for live music. I can't decide if the pedal board route is better.
@JohnH216 Yeah small rooms can take the noise. I have the 120 in my Kitchen (I have a wierd apartment) and it doesn't get overbearing till you push it past 1.
You said the EQ changes everytime you change to an amp model. Can you adjust the eQ once you're in that new channel and can you save the setting? What if you screw up can you revert to a default ?
It's a win win. I just ordered the Peavey Vypyr 120 combo tube amp, but musician'sfriend is giving me a bit of trouble. Oh well, it'll be worth it when it, along with the sanpera 2, comes in the mail :D
Do you think that the tube version of the Vypyr is suited more for metal as opposed to the solid state version? (comparing the 60 watt tube to the 75 watt ss)
I owned the Bogner/Spider Valve with tubes 2x12 but not the new MKII version. The clips I've heard of the MKII sounded just like mine though.
The solid state version sounds better to me than the tube version.
Well...as a long time semi-pro guitarist. searching for the ultimate tone?....Going thru Carvins, Marshall, Randalls ,Laneys, Ampegs and even ADA rackmounts...So, I came acrossed the Vypyr. i was intrigued....So I got the little 15w version. Sounded pretty dang good!! A little noisy, but potential tones were there.... BUT?!?!...I'm a tube man. So I looked into the tube versions, and looked frwrd to getting one someday. Well today was that day !! i got the 120w version, and it ABSOLUTELY rocks!
Generally I do prefer tube tone over most solid state tone, it's just in this instance I prefer the solid state tone of this amp. It all comes down to preference :).
I was thinking maybe for Christmas to buy the Peavey Vypyr 60 or 75. I don't know which one to get.
Do both take effect pedals?
I wouldn't say it's a "day/night"-difference, but it's definitely somewhat noticeable.
im deffinatly getting this beast
thanks bro, very helpful
Think of it this way. Pre-gain is the amount of signal hitting the preamp of the amp. so the colder, more saw like distortion. Think of it as a conventional gain control.
Post-gain is a master control (sort of) in the way that it controls the amount of signal now hitting the power section of the amp. in a tube amp this produces the smoother, creamy (arguably more desirable) distortion tone, with the trade off that you end up cranking the volume at the same time.
Was that clear enough?
How would you compare the Peavey Vypyr tube 60 to the Line 6 Spider Valve MkII? I'm trying to decide between the two.
Thanks a lot. I think I found the amp I like! I like too many styles of music so this is great and seems to have more character/tone to it than a line6 and how does it compare to Marshall?
Works just fine with my hot-rodded Dunlop Crybaby-wah.
The only pedals I was thinking to get were a boss ph-2 super phaser and maybe one of their compression sustainer pedals to get that incubus sound.
what is better this or the line 6 spider valve? i have the vypyr 30 but want a tube amp..
@ottawadrummer I have a Peavey Vypyr 30W now after getting rid of my Line 6 Spider III. Haven't looked back since.
Are there any other MIDI footswitches that are compatable with this amp?
I know the ADA MC-1 is, thats all I know.
Yeah, I was playing one of these in the guitar store a while back. This one sounded the best in it's price range. The Marshall and Line6 effects sounded awful.
I was waiting for him to talk about the warranty card for a minute.
Mine has the "Hot Potz - II" potentiometer in it, as well as some other things done to the actual guts.
oh i didnt know that... i have the 60w tube no wonder i was sitting right infront of the speaker playing and it wasnt hissing it would be nice if the noise supressor was one of the stompboxes or something and you could set it to mute or to just kill feedback
So would this amp sound better than the Vypyr 75W because the Vypyr 60 has tubes?
How is this amp when it comes to taking pedals?
When I turn my volume up on this amp I get an annoying buzzing noise that I don't want to be heard especially in shows and stuff. Could this be fixable or is it just the common nature of this style of amp?
I have this amp and everyone I know loves it. Its amazing! Its digital and has a plethora of different tones... but ooh wait.... it uses tubes, not transistors!
It is truly incredible... This was one of the best purchases that I made. I got he 60 watt tube, and it is PLENTY loud... Honestly I hardly go past 3 at home/ college and it goes up to 13.
It is honestly my dream amp... It has EVERYTHING I've always been looking for
If you replace the power tubes on this amp do you have to bias it or it does it's own bias?
How does it sound at a bedroom volume compared to band practice volume?
this peavey tube 60 amp,how many " kg " have..? thanx
Which one is more durable and less likely to malfunction?
Does the tube 60 sound good at a low volume ??
cause I would like to use it at home !!
thanks
I got the Tube one about a month ago and she rawks!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ottawadrummer I agree on leaving it alone, but the reason to not buy a 5150 stack instead is because a 5150 sounds like a 5150 and nothing else. If you want flexibility - like in a cover band - this is where this type of amp shines. As for cutting through the mix, there is never an excuse to not cut through the mix if you're in a good venue playing. If the amp can't cut it you have them mic it up through the house system. I can't see 60w tube not cutting, esp if rigged to a 4x12.
well, for the price of both of those together you could basicly get the sanpera ll. So you know , can do all that stuff you could do with the phaser.
Although i did play the ph-3 one time. Great phaser pedal/
@13Musicmachine Yes, but I've never been able to dial in a good distorted sound with the singles on my HSS stat.
Can i put into this amp an other multi-effect ?
does anyone know if those amps are full tube powered? isn't there a transistorpart in it? cuz the amps seams a little to beautiful for the price ;')
oh and i think this amp should have a noise suppressor and an acoustic pedal as 2 of the effects that would be amazing
There is actually as "Classic"-amp model on the Vypyr, which is nearly spot-on, from what I understand. It's one of my favorite models on the amp, and it's a helluvah lot cheaper than buying an actual Classic.
this is a nice sounding amp, but there are way too many settings and dials to be dealing with, if the demonstrator is struggling to work it correctly and getting confused then how are we meant to figure it out??
had one got rid of it in my quest to get a Marshall half stack which is way better
@otm3904: do u mean that it will suck at room volume or simply that u have to go max volume for it to sound godlike? i was planning to get one and heard that it is very good even at room play volume. how is it really?
@klpinvestments Did you own the Spider Valve MKII with the Bogner Tubes? Seems like the next generation would be better.
so i take it the direct out recording isn't very good...bummer...can you record out directly to a 'box' recorder, like the fostex vf160n using the headphone out?
@Marviosantos. Of course this amp has a use, would you honestly suggest we all buy true tube amps for practising? Have you heard a Jcm800 at bedroom levels, it sounds awful!
What is the difference between pre and post gain?
@Fluffypopcicle I won't say that passive pickups are bad. All I've had was passive guitars up until Christmas of last year, and I still loved the sound, but EMG seems to have my sound better. Everyone has their own preference. I've heard good things about Dimarzios as well. Some of my friends use them, but not many.
This amp or the solid state version for playing metalcore/death metal?
The truth is, if you took both the 60 and 75 versions of the Vypyr series combos and blindfolded 100 guitarists, 50-75% of them would have no idea which amp has the tube power section. They would be guessing. It takes a seasoned guitarist with a good ear to be able to really be confident as to what they're hearing...even the best guitarists in the world can be fooled. PV is closing the gap for sure. Analog distortion rules...digital distortion gets bland real quick.
what does he mean the tubes are in the power section? if you use any pedal for distortion and then it runs into a tube amp, e.g., tube screamer into Fender Twin-- isn't this the SAME??
should i get the peavey valveking, the vox valvetronix 100 watt, the fender frontman 212r, vypyr tube or fender super champ XD
@Mastecon21 get it. i've had one for 2 years and nothing bad has happened with it. hasn't broken or anything. theres a 6505 setting on this amp so u can get that tone that u dont have anymore apparently
can anyone tell me what the bypass is? does it turn off the stompboxes and the effects? what does it do
Just my opinion, But...
Peavey Vypyr Tube + EMG pickups = BABIESSSSS!
Final Fantasy 3 reference??? This guy is too cool!
Is it loud enough for a small gig?
Are you serious?? 60 watts is plenty of power for gigging. Plenty loud!!
