Early sign of bad story telling: Hellboy goes to Mexico to find a BPRD agent who was investigating vampires. Said agent gets turned into a vampire luchador. Hellboy kills him and the audience is supposed to feel emotional since Hellboy is distraught over this. Next scene, Hellboy is picked up to go on his next mission after spending weeks getting drunk. The vampire plot gets dropped. No scene of Hellboy going on a path for vengeance. Nothing... moving on
I don't think the audience IS supposed to feel emotional. If anything, the movie eschews actual drama in favor of playing with tropes. It's an under-the-surface kind of humor (vampire luchador) that goes over many people's heads, especially those expecting it to carry Del Toro's torch.

One brother gets kidnapped and turned into a vampire who Hellboy reluctantly fights and kills. After burying him, the 2 remaining brothers set off to avenge their brother while Hellboy stays in a drunken stupor for months until the B.P.R.D. found him. So the film dropped 90% of that story, the 3 brothers, and turned an unknown agent into the Vampire Luchador. Plus, this could have been combined with the Queen of Blood arc since she is allied with different monsters. Instead the film goes from the end of one story and starts another.

Honestly this might help greenlight a third del Toro movie. It wouldn't be the first time a bad reboot causes the original series to return. Whether that's on Netflix or something, who knows. And it probably won't be immediate. But I wouldn't count it out yet.

Kinda knew the editing was going to be shit because they picked the Blood Queen story arc, which is effectively the ‘end game’ story arc of the comic and took nearly the entire comic series to set-up and pay-off. And there were a bunch of other storylines and villains in-between before we got to her! So definitely knew this was a bad call, it’s too high stakes and takes way more setup than a single movie to work.
Don't follow the hellboy comics, but that sounds akin to shoehorning doomsday into batman v superman instead of saving him for at least 3 justice league movies later
Ya when I heard they were going to be adapting "The Wild Hunt" I was thrown off. There's so much build up in universe to Hellboy learning even more about his bloodline and who he is. It's like starting off the LOTR series at the Battle of Pelennor fields. Edit: I don't see why they couldn't have started at the beginning if this was supposed to be a reboot.
This Hellboy felt like watching a really cool game of D&D. The creature designs were sick even if the cgi wasn’t the best. I enjoyed how fast the pace was despite how many unnecessary scenes there may have been. The Pig was terrifying and a hilarious goon type character. After hearing it get ripped to shreds online and then watching it myself I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It’s objectively not as good as the originals but it was pretty close for me. The originals and a couple animated movies were my only knowledge of the mythos so I didn’t mind all the exposition that much. Also, the Abe tease at the end got me hype. I also try not to look at the original films with nostalgia goggles on. There was so much exposition in those things. CinemaSins Everything Wrong With... video on the first is one of my favourite things haha.
Yep, this guy nailed exactly how I felt about this movie. I wasn't a huge fan of the Del Toro ones, but after seeing this, I long for a chance to watch those again. There is a scene where Hellboy and company go to some island and traverse a cliffside to get to this cave on the far side of the island. Then after they are like "oh shit, we gotta get back to London ASAP" and then cut, they're in London and not hours upon hours late like real-time would dictate)

This may be the unpopular opinion but whenever an R-rated super hero flick is released it always tries way too hard to justify the rating. Whereas if a film is rated PG-13 they're able to squeeze in mature content more subtly and really push the boundaries of the rating (such as the original Del Toro's Hellboy series). Don't get me wrong, some films pull off the R-rating well, such as Logan and Watchmen, but other times it feels too excessive and not the least bit innovative.
It would be better if you watched it with a movie theater that has a bar. Just sayin I watched a screening the night before and it felt pretty long with the pacing not helping at all.

Saw this movie on a slow Tuesday... spent a lot of time thinking about my poor choices in life during the movie. On another note, the sound volume was so loud, it was impossible to fall asleep.

I think Hollywood at the time of del Toro's original Hellboy was a lot more weary on R rated comic films. The only one I can think of that came out before Hellboy that was R rated and successful was the original Blade movie and it's sequel. And yes, those movies were successful, but not nearly as successful as the PG rated ones like X-men and Spider-man, which is what they wanted to emulate box-office wise. I think if del Toro could have done an R rated version, it would have been amazing, but I get why the studio didn't want to do that at that time.

hard to adapt comic books to real life... even marvel movies and dc movies dont adapt too much to the comics they have to create their own adaptation, even those weeb real life movies dont transition well to real life neither does games to movies. they should really just make an R rated animated movie with hellboy instead, can get away with better looking characters, locations, more controlled acting the works...

This version felt like the writers just skipped through the book and thought hey this part will look cool, this part will be awesome. Rating R was "abused".. to much gore and blood.. to much f-bombs and bad language.. but it didnt enhance the movie at all.. You either are Martin Scorcese and you know how to have a proper Rated R movie 😊

For me, Hellboy (2019) was still an entertaining and self-aware film from start to finish. What bogs it down is so much exposition and a messy script. I would give it a C+.
So I have always enjoyed/appreciated your videos and have agreed on the majority of what you say. I have been ignoring movies bc you said you didn't like it, which was a bit ignorant on my part. Just saw this today and I really really enjoyed all of it. Makes me think of the other movies I have ignored in the past.
At one point in the movie, Daniel Day Kim's character mentions encountering a monster during a training exorcise. I've always wondered if this was a reference to Dog Soldiers?
I thought it was good. No you can't compare it to Guillermo's, so I'm not going to. For it being a fantasy dark comic movie, it was great. And it followed a lot of the comic Arc "the wild hunt". I don't know why people are so hard on it. It's an action dark comic movie... In that case, it delivered.
Apparently David Harbour (main actor) walked out on set because the producers wanted to direct stuff themselves and not let the director do his job. Sucks when studios interfere, 9/10 times they make things worse.

I enjoyed it but I totally see your point of view and I swear there was an instant during the giant fight where his hand of doom switched to the left hand.
I actually liked it quite a bit and it was always kind of a situation where the villains didn’t really matter because Hellboy is the real villain and hero in this story. The exposition was done relatively well to me with good setups and decent pay offs. I also liked the action and yes some of the cgi is sloppy but it’s not really jarring for me and I liked some of the humor. So, to me it was a pretty decent movie and I’d like to see a sequel.
I'll save y'all the trouble, I guess: the mid-credits scene has Ghost Lobster Johnson the post-credits scene (doesn't show him but) has Koschei the Deathless.

uh what games (non PS exclusives since I havent played those) in recent years have had great writing/storylines? I think writing in games has been severely lacking. Lots of generic recycling and repetitive gameplay mechanics all for the sake of padding out the game length. Finance departments have taken over game design.

If I was 14 I would have enjoyed the violence. However, my having an IQ above 17 kept me from enjoying it.

Saw this movie on a slow Tuesday... spent a lot of time thinking about my poor choices in life during the movie. On another note, the sound volume was so loud, it was impossible to fall asleep.
The song selection was so loud during talking scenes, I could barely understand what they were saying. (terrible British accents) shit tier movie.

Guillermo's version was not rated R but they were pretty good. Just because Deadpool made it look cool, Hollywood didn't have to make every comic book movie rated R.

I think Hollywood at the time of del Toro's original Hellboy was a lot more weary on R rated comic films. The only one I can think of that came out before Hellboy that was R rated and successful was the original Blade movie and it's sequel. And yes, those movies were successful, but not nearly as successful as the PG rated ones like X-men and Spider-man, which is what they wanted to emulate box-office wise. I think if del Toro could have done an R rated version, it would have been amazing, but I get why the studio didn't want to do that at that time.

hard to adapt comic books to real life... even marvel movies and dc movies dont adapt too much to the comics they have to create their own adaptation, even those weeb real life movies dont transition well to real life neither does games to movies. they should really just make an R rated animated movie with hellboy instead, can get away with better looking characters, locations, more controlled acting the works...

This version felt like the writers just skipped through the book and thought hey this part will look cool, this part will be awesome. Also this version made you feel no emotion for the kids apart from Beverly... maybe. Anyhow, I'm rambling. Let's hope chapter 2 is much better but I'm not holding my breath. Peace Be Upon You. ✌️

For me, Hellboy (2019) was still an entertaining and self-aware film from start to finish. What bogs it down is so much exposition and a messy script. I would give it a C+.

So I have always enjoyed/appreciated your videos and have agreed on the majority of what you say. I have been ignoring movies bc you said you didn't like it, which was a bit ignorant on my part. I thought it was good. No you can't compare it to Guillermo's, so I'm not going to. For it being a fantasy dark comic movie, it was great. And it followed a lot of the comic Arc "the wild hunt". I don't know why people are so hard on it. It's an action dark comic movie... In that case, it delivered.
Hellboy comics are not very violent

I enjoyed it but I totally see your point of view and I swear there was an instant during the giant fight where his hand of doom switched to the left hand.
I actually liked it quite a bit and it was always kind of a situation where the villains didn’t really matter because Hellboy is the real villain and hero in this story. The exposition was done relatively well to me with good setups and decent pay offs. I also liked the action and yes some of the cgi is sloppy but it’s not really jarring for me and I liked some of the humor. So, to me it was a pretty decent movie and I’d like to see a sequel.

uh what games (non PS exclusives since I havent played those) in recent years have had great writing/storylines? I think writing in games has been severely lacking. Lots of generic recycling and repetitive gameplay mechanics all for the sake of padding out the game length. Finance departments have taken over game design.
