    The whole paint-in-the-mouth thing combined with the poison typing made me think of how old timey painters used to wet their brushes with their tongues. This was a terrible thing to do though since all the paint was lead-based and therefore toxic. Van Gogh was one such painter to do this. I wonder if there is a special connection between Iberia and lead paint?
    I know there was a story about Europeans believing Tomatoes (from the new world) were poisonous because the acidity of the fruit was absorbing the lead out of the plates the royalty were using and thus was killing them. Maybe this has something to do with the berries used to produce Grafiai’s poisonous paint.
    Either way, this little dude is pretty dope.

    • @darklordofsword
      @darklordofsword ปีที่แล้ว +29

      It's also similar to how the indigenous Australians did some of their rock art, specifically the iconic hand silhouettes; take a bit of ochre in their mouths, press a hand to the rock face, and blow.

    • @rubiconprime1429
      @rubiconprime1429 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Did a little research. Turns out their were large lead mines in Spain that had been active since 3000 BC. Additionally, lead was used as a sweetener for wine in the Roman Empire which Iberia was of course a part of. This further connects to the note that Grafiai’s paint is sweet scented instead of sweet tasting. Of course the food was still toxic because lead.

      I'd never heard of that reasoning for why the tomato was thought of as poisonous. I had always thought it was because it was a member of the nightshade family, which was known to be poisonous. Though I suppose the lead plate explanation would have solidified their fear of it's toxicity.

      Acid in the juice leeched lead out of pewter plates (note that the peasants, who had wooden plates or trenchers of stale bread, were 100% eating them) and the chemical reaction of tomatoes cooked in copper pots, which is poisonous.

    I hope this mon is competitively viable. He has really good abilities. And he's adorable. And he seems to be taking inspiration from all sorts of poisonous/venomous animals. The poisoned saliva reminds me of lizards more so than anything else, like Komodo dragons, or gila monsters, who have a dangerous bite. The sweet scent saliva that attracts and incapacitates bugs reminds me of Pitcher Plants which have a way of luring in prey. IT COULD also take inspiration the slow loris, a lemur relative that is one of the few (or maybe only) poisonous mammals. What a unique Pokémon.
    I love the name too that's fun. Graffiti+aye aye = Grafaiai. I hope it evolves maybe into a poison/fairy type THAT would be unique (and we need more poison/fairy mons aside from Galarian Weezing and more fairy dual types in general) and it would fit considering the slow loris has A TON of myths around them curing people, BUT fairies being fairies it could still fits the poison type. A Dark/Fairy type would also fit and be better for competitive. All of these Paldea Pokemon are SO FRICKEN GOOD what the heck GameFreak.

    I was so shocked when Grafaiai was announced - aye-ayes are one of those animals people tend to look over when it comes to weird and creepy creatures. To see Game Freak notice this animal and turn it into a Pokémon is really great. Actually I think lemurs as a whole aren’t really appreciated when it comes to weird and funky animals. Aye-ayes are one of those animals I read about a lot growing up (since I loved books about all sorts of creatures) so to see it pop up in mainstream media made me unreasonably happy. (Funnily enough, I found this Pokémon first announced on Instagram and I didn’t see the name, but the long middle finger immediately made me think “Is that an aye-aye? DID THEY MAKE AN AYE-AYE POKÉMON?!”).
    Also sad fact about aye-ayes: because of how freaky they looked, lots of people killed them thinking they were demons.

    I see people saying the portuguese references are wrong or come out of nowhere and that Paldea is based on Spain and Spain only and like...
    I think only a "cortiça"-based Pokémon (the thing corks on wine bottles are made of) will convince those people Paldea is based on Iberia, and not JUST Spain. Because Portugal makes more than 50% of the worldwide production of cortiça. It's like, a third of the country is used just to make that. And it is a tiny country.

    • @goldkim7464
      @goldkim7464 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually Portugal makes around 70% of the world's cork. :) so yeah ! Also people keep forgeting that before Spain, Portugal was the biggest empire and it is even older than Spain itself. I really dont get the butthurt comments of some people who refuse to believe the aiberian peninsula is composed of both these countries 🙃

    • @blackroses96
      @blackroses96 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@goldkim7464 I don't think it's older than Spain, though... Or, maybe it is?? I mean, Portugal became its own country when its people basically said "we ain't what you are, we're our own thing", but I don't know since when Portuguese culture was a thing... And it's even weirder that we are a Thing, because there is no natural border between Portugal and Spain, no river, no moutain, nothing. So, like, why?? How?? X'D
      And yeah, we were the biggest empire until the whole "let's share America" debacle... but I can't think of it as a "Great Thing We Did" because of colonialism...
      At least, I don't think my Brasilian cousins are taught to be proud of being Brasilians because some of their ancestors absolutely did not invade and eradicate a whole indigenous people. (Yes, I'm tackling all the Proud Americans who forgot their ancestry is European, not American.)

    Grafaiai and Pokemon like Copperajah reminds me that it's okay to add Pokemon to your region whose origins is not that region. I'm designing Pokemons and a new region based on my own homecountry, and I often struggle to come up with consepts for new 'mons, because I take it too seriously. I'm trying too hard to make every Pokemon have deep roots in the culture, like with Galarian pokemon had with brittish culture. I like Grafaiai 'cause it reminds me to think that it's okay to have "imported" pokemon in your region. To broader your thinking and digging deeper and deeper in history, while trying to connect it with something from modern times. Designing your own region should be fun after all, no point to take it too seriously.
    Also I love the fact it's an Ai Ai, an animal that's a long overdue as a Pokemon.

    I’m so glad you touched on the slow loris inspo, no one else’s videos have mentioned that so far, and it immediately stuck out to me so I was hoping you would bring it up, and as always, you deliver. The giant eyes, while also resembling a painters mask, might also further draw from the slow loris inspiration, as they have famously massive eyes too.

    Interestingly the Aye-aye is one of the few mammals to use it’s finger to hunt grubs and stuff. It uses the sound from the wood it taps to discover where the grubs are. It’s actually using a type of echolocation so I would be willing to bet this guy learns at least one or two sound based moves.

    Street Painting is a HUGE thing in Portugal. I have visit lot of cities there and it ain't just Lisbon, it's literally everywhere. If you open Pokemon Go in any portuguese urban city you will find a pokestop of a grafitti near you, and on your walk to the spot, you will find even more art painted on walls, signs, flats, floor etc... Most of them are very professional drawings but there are some "punk" ones too (naturally). Loved Grafaiai!

    Okay but between the fingers covered in paint, the buck teeth, and the fact that the "spikey hair" also kinda looks like a baby bonet it's almost certaining a first form and evolves into probably a ring tailed lemur pokemon but also a slow luarace could make sense too. Lemur do spray chemicals with their Tails, although that may be to close to smergel but you never know.
