Salmon become pink at the end of their lifespan as they travel upstream in a Salmon Run. When it comes time to mate, they expend all of their energy into fighting that contorts their anatomy to be monsterous and red. After they mate, they then wither away and look like zombies before passing. I presume that's the origin for Basculegion.

Living by these rivers is nauseating during and after mating season though for everyone else. Barf.
I lived next to Chico Creek (Washington) in some apartments and every fall it was super gross for a few weeks. The smell just wafted everywhere.
Hisuian Growlithe is the goodest of boys, even if your hand potentially gets impaled by it's tiny horn when petting it

Another interesting thing for Basculegion; trout, another type of fish that swim up stream, are so incredibly streamlined that their bodies will naturally 'swim' when they are placed in moving water - even if they are dead. Like there's no motor control; the mechanics of their body just interact with vortexes in the stream in such a way that it sends ripples down the body and keep it stable.
Wouldn't it be dope if in future games these regional varients became "fossil" Pokemon ?

But its like a long-term thing, keeping track of how deep each 'mon is as we look into them.
Another possible (albeit very unlikely) inspiration for Basculegion is Legion, a collection of demons from the Bible who possessed a man and drove him to madness. Jesus expelled the demons from the mans body, but spared Legion instead of destroying them. And Basculegion is possessed as well, though by souls instead of demons. Again, it's prolly not the case but it's an interesting idea imo.

The excitement in my eyes when you said Growlithe could evolve into a wolf-like Pokémon. Arcanine is my favourite Pokémon and wolf is my favourite animal, I would literally die if that happened!

In German, Wyrdeer is called "Damythir". The name pulls from Damhirsch (German for the European fallow deer) and mythisch (mythical). Basculegion in German is calles "Salmagnis". This name pulls from Salmon and magnus, meaning big. Just a side note.
Pokemon German names are always rad. I really enjoy the majority that I’ve seen.

Just realized that the antlers on stantlers looks like eyes and the orb things are the pupels looking down
Other inspirations for Hisuian Growlithe are the old sprites of Growlithe and Arcanine where their fur was more "round" (similar to Hisuian Growlithe) and also one of the desings of the beta pre-evolution of Growlithe had a horn on his head. Probably Hisuian Arcanine will look like to that beta-mon that presumably was going to be an evolution of Arcanine back in gen 2 games

"Legion" makes me think of Christian demonology, in which a group of demons known as Legion appears in New Testement accounts of exorcisms.
Seriously, that is MOST DEFINITELY where it gets its name from. How on earth did he not mention this.

Legion is also a common monster in games like Castlevania where it’s a collection of dead souls who have fused into one. The Bleach manga also had a similar thing with its giant hollows. Also InuYasha had a demon jar where Naraku collected 100 demons with the idea that they’ll fight until only one is left, which will inherit the powers of all the others.

Why is that sad? Raising the question as to why they don’t exist in our time period is an excellent question, and one that should be somewhat addressed by gamefreak. For continuity reasons.
@@pokemonftw3652 it's sad because people aren't thinking clearly. It's so obvious that these variants eventually became extinct as time went on. Hence why they weren't even mentioned in the DP remakes(obviously they'll probs get there through pokemon Home).
Though a more clear explanation is that majority asking these types of questions are kids. Like, which adult wouldn't get the the deal with the hisuian variants.

The ancient Sinnoh are mere relics and copy the Zonai tribe from breath of the wild, ancient sinnoh was featured in the jewel of Arceus movie, though this is the frontier era of foundation, less the wild and more wild west shortly after the spiritual age and after the renaissance than just late middle ages.

Man, we didn't expect new forms on this game and they went HARD for them! I hope there are more and that they can somehow be used in traditional games

The main problem would be a lack of variation in the first four regions.
Maybe for kanto/jhoto they could do founding of indigo league (Maybe play as young oak with rivals Agatha and Giovanni?)

@@wesgransbury2132 i think they might do legends: kyurem next. we have not seen kyurems whole form yet, and it would be a great addition for a gen 5 anniversary. assuming it will be announced in like 3 years so it can be its 15th anniversary
Some additional comments about the origins:
Basculegion could also be referencing the Biblical story of the set of demons that possessed a man called Legion (Mark 5:1-13)
Also Hisuian Growlithe with its insulating fur but also being rock type could be a reference to asbestos which was formerly used as an insulator, but is no longer (as another reason for it no longer being around)
The biblical Legion was the reference I thought of too. I love that Pokémon are wonderfully deep in their inspiration sources
Even if the Hisuian forms are most likely extinct, they could've hidden themselves or travel far from humans and maybe in the Diamond and Pearl remakes or future games the player can search for secret habitats or environments.
Maybe that’s what the Pal Park equivalent will be for. Some kind of Reserve for Pokemon that can’t be found anymore. Just a thought

I can totally see them being rare, but still findable in the underground of BDSP. May have specific methods of evolution too to further explain their rarity.

Yo, imagine the final evolutions of the 3 starters becoming more "Hisuian", because you raise them in that region. Decidueye would get Grass/Flying and be a more pronounced archer (maybe ditching the cloak), Samurott would be Water/Dark (or fighting), stand up and have his shell swords out, and maybe Typhlosion would get Fire/Dark(or fighting) and get a kabuto-style helmet on their head

About the Shiisa and Komainu: they're slightly different. Shiisa is specifically in Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands while the Komainu are in the other parts of Japan.

Basculegion being inspired by dragon boat races among others is something i wouldn't have thought of, but Lockstin mentioning it makes me go "oh yeah, that makes a lot of sense"
All of the Ainu talk reminded me that Golden Kamuy is a thing and you should watch it because that is a series that pays insane amount of attention to Ainu culture. It is also just a hilarious and pretty violent series too.
There's a lot of connections to Russia with these new pokemon, I kind of wonder if it's a Hint to the next Generation having a lot of Russian mythology and influence?
It’s basic geography. Look at a map of the world. Look how close Japan is to Russia.
Look how close Hokkaido is to Russia.
I personally think that if there were to ever be a region with double the amount of gyms or even a gym for every type, I'd be Russia~
Russia's big enough and could be an opportunity to expand on the minor league gyms thing that Galar introduced, by having a bunch of optional gyms that you could go to mid story for grinding and unlocking some other minor things~
I doubt so, but it would be neat. I'd love a Baba Yaga Pokémon.
It might just be because the colonization of Hokkaido had Russia looming as a threat in the Japanese consciousness. I just think it would be super cool if we started getting regions we haven't seen yet referenced by name, and so "Russia" keeps getting referenced, even if we're not going there next gen. It would help the world feel bigger.

Having this region with an alt evo for decidueye that's not a ghost type would be cool.

I've been wondering if that was foreshadowing of a Russia inspired region being next, it's unlikely but they do tend to foreshadow a new region in SOME way (like the sideways galar painting in Alola if I remember correctly)
A Russian Pokémon region would be great if only because it would justify plenty of Ice Pokémon being found early on.

Basculegion’s name HAS to have some influence from the biblical “legion”. At least the localization team definitely pulled some inspiration from the tale.
