  • Tandemaus and Maushold may seem like basic Pokemon, but secretly, some DARK origins are involved in their design... at least theoretically. JOIN ME! As we discuss these 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 21, 44, 3040, new Pokemon! How do you evolve Tandemaus? What is Maushold based on? How many babies can mice have? Are Maushold Rat Kings? Are Tandemaus Lab Rats? Are Tandemaus dolls? Hopefully, we'll answer these questions.

Love their evolution concept: instead of being huge, powerful monsters, it's their relationship/marital status that evolves; from being a couple to being an entire family unit.

Additional fun fact about Population Bomb: In Japanese, it's ネズミざん (nezumizan) which comes from ねずみ算 whose literal translation is something like "mouse math problem", but has taken on an idiomatic meaning of "proliferation" because mouse math problems are usually tied to exponential growth. Additionally, "nezumizan" could also be read from ねずみ斬 which means something like "mouse cut", which is why its animation looks like a cut and why it's apparently boosted by the Sharpness ability.

I have this comic drawn up somewhere called "Population Bomb" (don't go looking, I haven't posted it anywhere yet). The origin of it was this guy who got perfect stats on a Maushold and named it "NUKE", because the perfect stats + some held item made Population Bomb a move where it'll faint basically any Pokémon. So, Population Bomb can hit up to 10 times. Maushold can have up to 4 members. And supposedly the move works because all the "household members" attack the opponent. So, where do the other 6 go? And here we go.
    "Morgan, where's little Timmy?"

That they do have an evolution screen and also reproduce via eggs just makes this whole line all the more confusing/interesting, leaving open the possibility that the "family" is more like some kind of mitosis rather than normal reproduction. I do wonder too what in-universe justification there can be for pokemon scientists not knowing if the pokemon are a family or not, since we know other pokemon have had genetic testing done on them (heck its a story point in Scarlet/Violet). It's about as confusing as how they can claim no one knows what the rest of a Diglet's body looks like, as if no one has ever studied a unconscious or dead one in history.

Maybe because they are not organic in the traditional sense. They may just be stuffed dolls with no DNA to test.
