I haven't watched all of this yet, only the first 3½ minutes, but in relation to something you said in your last video as well, and in this with "Ken, you don't have to say you're the greatest singer, the greatest vocal coach", this is my approach to teaching: I don't have a long career behind me in teaching and have never played professionally (but I've had some nice comments about my teaching, which I appreciate A LOT). However, one of the things I always highlight when teaching is "this is how I approach X, Y, Z..." or "this is what has worked for me in learning/understanding X, Y, Z...", and trying to find a way for a student that works for THEM to understand it - and that may be a different approach to my own, but I can still support that approach. Selling a course or lesson as "this is the BEST/ONLY way to learn guitar/singing/piano" always irks me. It seems your approach is not about gloating like Ken, that's for sure! I can always appreciate that.

One thing I find telling at 15:01 is: Where's the "parrot tongue" maneuver he usually does when he hits a high note with force? You know - like those "HEEEEEEY, YEEEEEEAH" notes he randomly yells? That movement's not happening, because he's not actually hitting the high notes at all. You can see his tongue begin to do it on some notes, then relax more on subsequent "high" notes. I think this is because he's dodging the high notes irl; he's actively avoiding hitting them because he can likely feel the strain coming and sings lower instead.

Wonderful video. Great to listen to someone speak with a great understanding of how different vocalists express themselves. Having spent a lot of time in recording studios myself, it's always so easy to detect when a performance is mined, and that's in the direction from where the sound comes. I know that for most people who haven't had that experience of recording could easily be fooled into believing that what they believe to be live really isn't, but not for the trained ear. An example of what I'm talking about was wonderfully demonstrated in the performance of Puddles that you played and who I'd never heard of before but instantly loved. But when you watch and listen to this performance every movement he makes around the microphone whilst singing changes the expression of every word, you don't get that when a performance is pre-recorded and mimed to. REN is another artist who very masterfully demonstrates how playing with a real live vocal performance can express a song in a much greater way as he demonstrates in The Tale Of Jenny And Screech, or Hi REN. So thanks for talking the time to do this video and for introducing Puddles Pity Party, I'm a fan now.

Devon, this was as thoughtfully and genuinely presented as could be. (Your previous take was good, too.) I only discovered you (and subscribed!) because of the whole "I"m not just Ken, I'm the best Ken ever" story via Wings of Pegasus. I just had a look at The Ken's video (12:45 am EST, Oct. 11/24) and interestingly, there are still 462 comments...yet yours is gone, as are the two that were below it. There are now seven more from two years ago instead, like the rest of them. But what's most striking about that video is that anyone can or should so easily see and hear that his singing and playing is not only not live, it's so laughably faked. For a Christian Metal musician, he seems awfully proud of himself. Perhaps the genre is about living just some of the seven sins instead of all of them.
I'm off to join the Puddles Pity Party now!

How ironic that the real clown wasn't the one wearing the make-up & pom-poms. First time I've ever seen Ken and within 30 seconds it was plainly obvious it was mimed... I've seen 1st time drag queens with better lip syncing skills than Ken! There's two dead giveaways for me... the "studio mix" sound (with those conveniently balanced harmonies that never over-step his vocal)... and repeatedly missing his cues by a fraction of a second (something I learnt from theatre pros & drag artists indicates a performer who's "chasing" the lip sync instead of matching the vocal performance). It just made the ego in his video description doubly eye-rolling.
And I knew I'd seen Puddles before... I was wracking my brain until you mentioned Primus, that performance was brilliant! I'm excited to track down his 'War Pigs' cover now, I _love_ hearing more classically-trained vocalists like Puddles cover that track. 🤘😎

Your analysis is spot on and pitch perfect in tone and tenor. Anyone who's ever spent time tracking live in a studio or with an intuitive sense of optics and sound would understand any notion that Tamplin's vox/instr performance in that clip isnt lip syncd /mimed is patently absurd..cartoonish levels.

He even monitors replies to other peoples comments. I tried a few on old posts and they were gone pretty quickly. I wasn't even being rude or anything. Was just pointing some things out. haha .. I guess that's why he puts his little heart on all the comments so he can keep track. hahaha
