Wow. (~ 15 min in) Any guitar player watching two seconds of that can see that the playing doesn't time with the music. And that right hand is just ridiculous.
Someone needs to put up a public challenge to Ken and tell him that if he can sing/play a stripped down version of this on a livestream with no backing track, in the same key as in his 1989 studio recording, a large check would be delivered to a charity of his choice. The rules would be simple: all he can bring is his guitar, pedal board, and an amp. The studio would supply the rest. This could be done at any neutral, third party studio near him.
I couldn't agree more,... well spoken my friend : ) There is a fine line between arrogance and acknowledgement,... it is not the horn which powers the diesel!

The sad thing is that so many believe everything they see on youtube, tiktok or other places is 100% authentic. 50+ years of abusing my hearing with open pipe motorcycles, too loud practicing in my room and mixing in night clubs has ruined my hearing, but even through tinnitus I can hear inconsistencies in Kens studio performance. With that mic, not only would the voacls not be sharp, but I would also expect to hear noise from the pick or string rattle. BTW, great example with Puddles - he uses the mic wonderfully to change inflection and intonation.
YES, yes , you hit it exactly the way it is, so true. Hopefully if TH-cam takes this video down, remove or edit the part TH-cam first disapproves, you please put it back up (after edit) because you really brought the truth forward.
On a performance before Covid struck, someone recorded it. I was singing into a Sennheiser e945, and every time I looked down at my fretboard, there was a noticeable dropout in my vocals, and not just tone, so yeah, any big changes in the mouth-to-capsule alignment cause significant changes that can really mess up a performance.
Guy could have avoided all this by just saying "hey when you get older you can't hit some of those highs and I wanted my live show to sound as good as possible so I used a track for those highs". Problem solved.
I love your approach, like also Phil from wings of Pegasus. Clear and factual and humble as it should be. Ken's personality truly gets in his own way. Thank you for sharing Puddles Pity Party, what a wonderful voice. I love when musicians bring other musicians forward.
I was trying to hone in his equipment to see if there were any audio signals - say syncing with his guitar, etc. I couldn't see any track metering anywhere. It's nice to know that equivalent world class recordings on par with anything genius ever recorded needs only a $99 Squire Strat.
I just want to thank Ken for bringing up your video about him to my feed. I did not know you actually have a channel until now. Watching your stuff backwards now. I am a fan of yours since I saw you July 7th 1993. Didn’t knew who you were, some friend said waltz is worth going.. and you blew my head straight off. Still got that ticket to this day. I hope I get a chance to see you again live.
How ironic that the real clown wasn't the one wearing the make-up & pom-poms. First time I've ever seen Ken and within 30 seconds it was plainly obvious it was mimed... I've seen 1st time drag queens with better lip syncing skills than Ken! There's two dead giveaways for me... the "studio mix" sound (with those conveniently balanced harmonies that never over-step his vocal)... and repeatedly missing his cues by a fraction of a second (something I learnt from theatre pros & drag artists indicates a performer who's "chasing" the lip sync instead of matching the vocal performance). It just made the ego in his video description doubly eye-rolling. And I knew I'd seen Puddles before... I was wracking my brain until you mentioned Primus, that performance was brilliant! I'm excited to track down his 'War Pigs' cover now, I _love_ hearing more classically-trained vocalists like Puddles cover that track. 🤘😎
Watch out, you may find yourself on a Puddles binge! lol He was on one of those competition shows several years ago. I think it was America's Got Talent, but maybe it was a different show. I don't watch them. Anyway, he was loved, and has had a following since. He's also worked with Post Modern Jukebox quite a bit. I didn't know he appeared with Primus. Now I have to go find it.
I think it's disgraceful that he deletes all the negative comments - so he obviously reads them - but he left a comment saying that was a virtuoso guitar performance. He saw it and was like: Well that one is true. I'm leaving that one!
Wonderful video. Great to listen to someone speak with a great understanding of how different vocalists express themselves. Having spent a lot of time in recording studios myself, it's always so easy to detect when a performance is mined, and that's in the direction from where the sound comes. I know that for most people who haven't had that experience of recording could easily be fooled into believing that what they believe to be live really isn't, but not for the trained ear. An example of what I'm talking about was wonderfully demonstrated in the performance of Puddles that you played and who I'd never heard of before but instantly loved. But when you watch and listen to this performance every movement he makes around the microphone whilst singing changes the expression of every word, you don't get that when a performance is pre-recorded and mimed to. REN is another artist who very masterfully demonstrates how playing with a real live vocal performance can express a song in a much greater way as he demonstrates in The Tale Of Jenny And Screech, or Hi REN. So thanks for talking the time to do this video and for introducing Puddles Pity Party, I'm a fan now.
Puddles always leave me with a melancholic smile on my face. He is wonderful! 🙏🏻 Now, there is a real singer, from top to toe. 🎤 Ken Tamplin on the other hand… 😵💫
Thank you Devon. I agree with every point you make here. On a positive note though: I've noticed that sometimes it's a good thing for a vocalist/frontman to have their ego just a tad above the point of equilibrium. Particularly onstage. I've observed good reactions to this playing in a number of bands over the years.
Ken, is a public figure, so he should understand that scrutiny comes w the territory. Your point about humility is spot on. I think the Lord (if you believe) exposes us (proud Christians) to humble us. "He humbles the proud." But, if you humble yourself (choose humility over pride) , "humble yourself...and HE will lift you up" Ken just needs to be the best he can be, no lies, no faking it, no bringing other down to promote himself, if he does, and he's genuine, His God will see to it he succeeds (He will lift you up). Ken isn't fighting you, or Fil, he's fighting someone higher, who has his best interest in mind. I hope he stops and just fesses up. Everyone will accept that and give him grace. Otherwise, he's becoming a huge turn-off to listen to. I appreciate the way you presented this. Hard truth, but with kindness. Good job.
Quick test for anyone doubting he’s miming. Play with volumes. Want to do a more detailed analysis download the soundtracks import and see them match perfectly :)
I didn't even have to do any pausing. That guitar player is NOT playing that solo live and Ken is lip syncing the crap out of those first lines. Watch his mouth when he sings the word "DANGER ZONE". The singing fades out yet his mouth is still wide open "singing" the word ZONE.
Personally, I think he is miming the whole 'Control Room' song..... But your right - If he just let it go and fessed up this would all go away for him in a couple of weeks...
I've been using Ken's vocal program for years. It changed my life. So I have a lot of love for him. That's one reason him being so disingenuous about lip syncing is blowing my mind. Just own up to it, dude! He can CLEARLY sing his ass off so lying about whatever happened that night is just totally unnecessary. As far as his critique of other singers goes - I've been following his channel for a long time, and in every video I've ever seen from him about these legendary singers - Freddie Mercury, Sebastian Bach, Steve Perry, on and on - he always says something like, "hey, I'm not trying to criticize them, and I'm just Ken Tamplin, I haven't done anything close to what they've done with their songs and their careers, I just want to approach this from the question of good vocal health and my own taste and preferences." So framing his comments there as him trashing people is a little weird. All that to say - he's doing and saying enough that if we just stick to the facts he's painted a pretty unkind picture of himself lately. There's no need to exaggerate any of his bad behavior. He looks bad enough.
All good points, but the humble position you state about him saying he is "just Ken Tamplin" never came across to me. It was always him saying how he is doing it better, singing it higher... and today he really triggered me on saying he took "Painkiller" by judas Preist "a step further" by singing it in chest voice which is harder to do." But it certainly didn't sound better. Not by a stretch.

I absolutely adore Puddles! One of the purest voices you'll ever hear. I've had many binges, myself. The clown suit did take some getting used to, though. lol I love that you used Puddles as an example of what perfect live singing looks like. The way he works the mic is so smooth and subtle that most people wouldn't even consciously notice unless they're looking for it. Every singer should strive to reach Puddles' flawless stage presence as well as vocals. (Obviously I'm referring to his execution, not necessarily his style.) Many won't *quite* achieve it, but setting the goal will be incentive to always work on improving.
Puddles sang live in concerts what you hear is what you get with comedy too. From what I found out he was in a rock band he did stage shows and Opera so versatile and uses now as Puddles just amazing. This is why he knows how to use a microphone. Really he should be famous. I hope Devon you get to work with him to me he needs a band and do major live shows. As for Ken I know he can sing but he hides his limitations Yes he can play Guitar but not even close to so many others so you are right about Ken and it is sad really.
I spent 15+ years in music retail, including the entirety of the 90s when CDs and DVDs were high theft items. Ken, in his rebuttal video, ticks off EVERY SINGLE behaviour box for someone who has been caught red-handed and refuses to admit it. I was laughing my head off watching it. 🤣
Ken has also abused those services that sell youtube comments, a lot of his videos comment sections are filled with obvious fake comments with all real ones removed
I was introduced to Puddles Pity Party on America's Got Talent, easy to find all his performances on AGT on TH-cam. There is no lip syncing on AGT, what would be the point of the show? He is one of the most alluring and talented singers out there. Once you've seen and heard him you get entirely drawn in and it would be very hard not to go down that rabbit hole. I've watched a whole lot of his videos, and I've seen him sing with small bands. Small in size, not notoriety. The people he is playing with (all famous to one degree or another) would not agree to play with him if he wasn't the real deal. In my opinion, one of his most touching covers: Hallelujah - Puddles Pity Party at the SF Regency Lodge Ballroom th-cam.com/video/ItXygU9SJCA/w-d-xo.html Another fantastic one: Mad World - Vintage Vaudeville - Style Cover ft. I have a song about following faith leaders to your doom. It's called "Regret". The first verse is about his cult. The second about Marshall Applewhite and the third about Jim Jones. I will post a (real) live in-the.studio acoustic version shortly.
Having sung and played guitar for 40+ yrs, it is obvious that he is not playing the guitar or singing live. It is like watching a movie with overdubbed dialogue. Anyone with any experience would recognize this. Couldn’t be more obvious.
Ken made the mistake of being so arrogant that he believed his own bs... I've been fortunate enough to make a living in music (on and off) most of my adult life. I’ve been lucky to share stages with people I didn't think I was good enough to roadie for, let alone perform with. I know how lucky I've been. When you're at a social event, spouse's office party for example, you're inevitably asked "So are you any good?"... The best answer I've found is, "I don't honestly know... I'm always trying to improve. But I get paid, and I do know that the people who want me to play with them are really good." Once you start thinking you can do no wrong, it's time to hang it up. There's some random kid in a garage somewhere who makes us all look like idiots, good to remember that. Great take on the situation!
Also, I liked the reference you made to Jeff Scott Soto. I've mixed 5 or 6 six songs with him on vocals and he's a monster! Not only with his singing, but with his take on how a melody suits a song. Great guy to work with.
Also another lovely humble soul. I had the privilege of crossing paths with him at more than one festival we both coincided. over the years. I also saw him sing with Yngwie on that Marching Out album when he was only 19. I was 18. He was perfect. Also, the guy up close still looks no onlder than 30, though he is definitely pushing 60. Last time we met wasn't that long ago.
As a belcanto singer, I have benefited TONS 🎉 from Ken Tamplin's vocal training applying classic techniques to modern music styles like rock, nu metal, grunge, etc. Thanks to him, I'm now able to sing Even Flow of Pearl Jam with a rock voice in the original tonality IN PITCH. And that is what counts, right. I wonder who of the so many critics of Ken has actually done his course and tried to apply it to their own singing. In the KTVA 2.0 course, it's obvious that Ken is singing live. You can hear that from little flaws, voice cracks, slightly slipping pitch, guitar mistakes. So why bother about lip sync? Btw I have heard other amazing live voices sounding even BETTER than Ken in parts that were labelled "not live" here. Maybe I should posti them and ask all the "experts" to judge if they're live or not 😂 Last remark: If someone shows you vocal parts as SINGLE LINES, you know sth has been taken out because THERE IS NO SUCH THING as singing WITHOUT OVERTONES 😊 So don't just believe things are "facts" if they come this simple and easy to believe. Question whatever you're being told and double check 😅

Not as much about my comment, but watch his video on "How to sing Painkiller" where he claims to sing it better than Rob Halford LOL
@@devon-graves-studio-DI believe that is called "Shadow Banning" and it's practiced by thin skin narcissists.
@@devon-graves-studio-D He claims he can sing better than the metal GOD Rob Halford? Hahahahahahahahaha!!!
I'm just flabbergasted that people really think Ken was singing this live, unbelievable... Righthand picking was just out of this world... 😅🤣 Had to pick myself up from the floor laughing
Yeah that elbow technique is just horrid. His thumb on his left hand is all over the place too. He has zero lead guitar technique.
Maybe got this wrong. The lip sych was very obvious and I'm sure Ken didn't really expect anyone to beleive he was actually playing and singing live. ..people aren't that stupid...surely!@@
Wow. (~ 15 min in) Any guitar player watching two seconds of that can see that the playing doesn't time with the music. And that right hand is just ridiculous.
Which performance?
Someone needs to put up a public challenge to Ken and tell him that if he can sing/play a stripped down version of this on a livestream with no backing track, in the same key as in his 1989 studio recording, a large check would be delivered to a charity of his choice. The rules would be simple: all he can bring is his guitar, pedal board, and an amp. The studio would supply the rest. This could be done at any neutral, third party studio near him.
When I saw Ken slag on Steve Perry and Sting, I was like, what????
I couldn't agree more,... well spoken my friend : ) There is a fine line between arrogance and acknowledgement,... it is not the horn which powers the diesel!
Humility is perhaps the most underrated of all virtues; you went said it so well from 4:20.
I don’t know a thing about Ken Tamplin, but to every one brought here by this guy: If you‘re interested in great rock music, I recommend Psychotic Waltz. 😊
Fantastic band with an awesome singer! 😉👍
I almost spat coffee EVERYWHERE!!! "You love yourself" LOLOLOLOL
Proverbs 27: 2 Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth-a stranger, not your own lips.
So the song is his own and he writes that it is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written? Mind blowing 🤐
I noticed that too! Whaaaat? 🤦♀
IF he puts a Copyright strike on your Channel you simply put in a dispute, Meatloaf the performer tried to do that for my Video on my channel many years ago , he put his legal team on to me but I refused to back down, that Video has almost a million views to this day
TH-cam love putting their climate change fact checks under every video that remotely comes near the topic. Yet they allow Ken to lie and delete comments.
On what grounds could I dispute? It's already claimed by both Ken AND The Pixies. I won't get any revenue anyway. I heard it is worse to loose a dispute.

Love your commentary. My old football coach said this. “What people say about themselves out of arrogance reveals their specific weakness and jealousy”. I think Ken reveals it clearly. Sadly he is getting more popular because of it still.
I don't think it's the attention he wants tho
I can't believe that some people nowadays can accuse you of being too polite, too objective, and not playing it judge enough towards other people!
I think they meant it good-heartedly.
Funny, but i can´t find your comment under Ken´s video... Ken, the master-deletererer ?🤣
Yeah, that was quick. He must watch everything with a hawk's eye, have people helping him, or some kind of AI doing it. I just hope people continue exposing him this way until he comes clean (IF he ever does). I feel bad for his potential students who haven't heard about all this and buy his material in good faith.
Ken has been very busy the last couple of weeks deleting comments from the videos on his YT channel.....lol
Your comment is gone. Let's see mine.

He "hides" these comments. That way the person who posted still sees it. I see it from my own channel, but not from someone else. Sneaky and very deceptive indeed.
Puddles has done great work with Post Modern Jukebox! Thank you for doing another detailed Tamplin video.
My favourite Ken video is the one where he's trapped inside an invisible box.
Anyone ever notice you never see Devon and Puddles in the same room at the same time?! Hmmmm? 🤔
The proof is in the syncing
I think I once heard somewhere that Ken beat Chuck Norris in a fight😮
Ken can also bake the most delicious cake ever.
Puddles is an amazing singer ❤ Thanks for sharing, I would never have known about him.
Man, your so right........Ken wants everyone to be Ken, and anyone else isn't good enough.
Message to Ken: no one cares for perfection - they want soul, passion and authenticity. Things you apparently don't have.
Lol, of course, Puddles! 🤣. Cool example, love his version of Holy Diver with Primus. He is legend!
Puddles is a treasure♥
I was trying to hone in his equipment to see if there were any audio signals - say syncing with his guitar, etc. I couldn't see any track metering anywhere. It's nice to know that equivalent world class recordings on par with anything genius ever recorded needs only a $99 Squire Strat.
I don’t know anything about recording music, and I know he’s miming.
Hehe, similar here :) But I haven't had the chance to see either PW or DT live :(
Devon, still you are a gentleman! True words but nicely spoken!!!! All the best for you!!! :) :) :)
Thank you so very much :)
Watch out, you may find yourself on a Puddles binge! lol
He was on one of those competition shows several years ago. I think it was America's Got Talent, but maybe it was a different show. I don't watch them. Anyway, he was loved, and has had a following since. He's also worked with Post Modern Jukebox quite a bit. I didn't know he appeared with Primus. Now I have to go find it.
"Nearly identical to Dio"????
BOLD STATEMENT.
Now I need to seek that video out.
That nutty Ken needs to get with Corey Feldman and form a new combo. They can call it “the douche chills”
That clip of Tamplin "playing guitar and singing" wasn't even lip-synced. It was lip-out-of-synced.
7:50 to paraphrase Bruce Dickinson: " Fundamentally, I'm a storyteller".
I think it's disgraceful that he deletes all the negative comments - so he obviously reads them - but he left a comment saying that was a virtuoso guitar performance. He saw it and was like: Well that one is true. I'm leaving that one!
Humility. Honesty. Values so graciously taught in this video.
When you first brought up this Puddles cat, I thought it was Devin Townsend in clown face.
It's the difference between a healthy ego & an inflated one... Ken certainly seems to fall in the latter category!
Ken, is a public figure, so he should understand that scrutiny comes w the territory. Your point about humility is spot on. I think the Lord (if you believe) exposes us (proud Christians) to humble us. "He humbles the proud."
But, if you humble yourself (choose humility over pride) , "humble yourself...and HE will lift you up" Ken just needs to be the best he can be, no lies, no faking it, no bringing other down to promote himself, if he does, and he's genuine, His God will see to it he succeeds (He will lift you up).
Good job.
Thank you for reminding me about Puddles! I remember his brilliant Mad World cover from years ago, but haven't thought about him since.
Quick test for anyone doubting he’s miming.

Try to play them at the same time.(have on paused and play the other when it’s close to the timestamp)
Now you will get an echo effect, because it’s the same track.(the recorded one) played twice.
Puddles is amazing. I have been following him for a decade it seems.
Not to mention you would hear some of the picking and strumming of the electric guitar if that mic were turned on.
Puddles doesn't clown around when he's singing, good voice.
Man, Puddles is absolutely phenomenal!
That dude's use of dynamics & mic position is maybe the best i have ever heard or seen.
As a guitarist I have a bigger issue with his fretting hand. That’s what really gives the faking away as far as I’m concerned.
That Puddles Pity Party dude sings well! Wow, I think I saw him on AGT.
After watching the Corey Feldman guitar solo video...wonder if Corey took lessons from KT?? 🤔🎸🎶
TH-cam can be weird sometimes.. I've been listening to Deadsoul Tribe for like fifteen years now, and suddenly YT recommends me Devon's video because of this Ken Tamplin fiasco :]]
companies such as data analytica have socially profiled every user on the internet. they target viewers with loaded content. it all came out back around 2016 with the election over in the USA.
13:52, that video was originally called "can you play guitar and sing at the same time?", then he changed it to holdin on, wich is the name of the song he recorded many years before in studio, in fact, is just the same song, he didn't even re-recorde again in the studio and them lyp sinched the re-recorded version, he just put the original track and that's it. Here is the original song in case you want to compare them:

The clown sings magnificently
i actually thought it was Devon
@19:17 "Oh....where was that whammy dive!?"
I absolutely adore Puddles! One of the purest voices you'll ever hear. I've had many binges, myself. The clown suit did take some getting used to, though. lol
I love that you used Puddles as an example of what perfect live singing looks like.
The clown suit indeed, but now I wouldn't have him any other way. Unique. That is the hardest thing. To be unique.
This day was on the calendar for Ken Tamplin. When you roll like he does, you invite becoming a target.
Never heard of Ken Tampon in my life until just now .
Interesting. 😇
In my opinion, one of his most touching covers: Hallelujah - Puddles Pity Party at the SF Regency Lodge Ballroom th-cam.com/video/ItXygU9SJCA/w-d-xo.html
Another fantastic one: Mad World - Vintage Vaudeville - Style Cover ft. Puddles Pity Party & Haley Reinhart th-cam.com/video/aVevvbFNKiY/w-d-xo.html
I think everyone forgets he needs to be a salesman, and sometimes salesmen are not always pleasant. 🤷♂️

Please exposed this guy Ken Tamplin. He is arrogant and he doesn't deserve all those subscribers he had.
He reminds me of David Koresh

But I get paid, and I do know that the people who want me to play with them are really good."
Once you start thinking you can do no wrong, it's time to hang it up.
Sheesh! For a professional lip sync’er, Ken SUCKS at lip syncing. He ain’t fooling anybody with this.
The Last Tamptation of Ken..... And those impossible notes are God notes, lol...
