I've been a Fil fan for years. He doesn't take delight in these stories, and it actually saddens him when these techniques are used and lied about. He has impeccable integrity.
On the whole he seems good. One of the few on here who do proper analysis and not just taking the easy route. There’s times I watch and think he’s being a bit passive aggressive though. Maybe I’m reading it all off but he comes across as a bit smug at times.
I watched Joan Baez give a full concert not too far back in Spain, perhaps shortly before Covid. She was still an outstanding singer but she didn't have the same range as she used to have, and adapted her performance accordingly, sipping water as she went and having a younger vocalist with her to take over some of the high parts. She acknowledged how her voice was not what it once was openly to the audience and nobody thought the worse of her for it. It was still a memorable evening. Nothing wrong with ageing gracefully, perhaps others should take note.
I had thyroid cancer and my vocal chords are stapled together now. Lost all my highs but now I retune music down to my present vocal range and it works great. She should do that too. All older singers should learn to.
I saw Guns n Roses a year or two ago and Axl had an illness and couldn't hit his normal live high notes so he sang the whole night in a lower register, still sounded amazing... In fact in parts he sounded better than when he does shoot for the high stuff! If a guy with a legendary ego like Axl can go on stage and still perform and adapt and be genuinely apologetic to the crowd then there really is no excuse for anyone else!
Are we forgetting about the livestream now? He's also been lip syncing since 1989 yet promotes his course will help you 'tour the world'. This is no 'scandal' or TH-cam drama; it's fraud, and it's a crime.
Honestly, if Axel Rose had to perform with some pre-recorded parts of the song, not singing, I would have a historic orgasm, since I never got to see Guns live. Nobody cares about that, and most don't even realize it when they're live. What irritates most people is trying to take us for fools
Yup, he will never come clean, he is unable to. He is literally incapable of admitting any fault or failure because he's suffering from that exact personality disorder. It's why he has to put other singers down and claim to be better than Freddy Mercury and Paul Rogers while pointing out how they aren't perfect like him. On a personal note I think his voice is horrible.
He is an absolute prat. On one video of a one of his female students singing he keeps shaking the camera the entire song and changing angles, I simply commented that it was seriously off putting/annoying and not to do it in future and he deleted it
Phi is an excellent example of a wonderful musician who cares about THE MUSIC! Sorry Ken. You misrepresented yourself and got caught, plain and simple. Doesn’t mean Ken isn’t great, but he was not truthful and he gets what he sows. Keep up the solid work Phi.
I have been recording and touring for over 45 years. He is absolutely lip syncing. It is NO mystery. Vocal coaches don’t have to be the most amazing marketable singers in the world. But they do need to understand, demonstrate and teach good and bad techniques. But Ken’s ego is involved.
Exactly. What is a shame is that if he would’ve just come clean about it and said, Ok yeah I did it for the higher ranges or whatever, most people would be like ok no big deal. Some wouldn’t like him, he’d lose some customers, viewers etc but he’d probably recover. Nobody is perfect etc. people tend to be forgiving when people admit things and there are many ways worse things than what he did. But that isn’t what he’s doing., instead doubling down which never NEVER helps. It always makes it worse.
I agree because good technique can be learned where as what you sound like can sometimes be out of your control some are just more gifted. I think of it like teaching someone how to bench press properly, you may not be as strong as them but can demonstrate proper technique which in turn will help them be better
You remind me of Fil, not only for the British accent but in your manner and articulate way of stating your case. You are a pro and both you and Fil are classy humble guys.
@@travisash8180 Really? There are 56 regional dialects in Britain, but they are all 'British' accents by definition. Which is a distinguishing linguistic differential applicable to every country which has its own language.
I've been following Fil since he had 13K subs. I never watch reaction videos, but for some reason I wanted to see what he had to say about one of my favorite musicians. And everything you say about Fil is spot on. A very respectful human being. he used to do eulogy videos, and it's too bad he stopped, since he was so good. I respected this video, and if i see one of your videos, I'll click on it. Merci beaucoup.
Did Fil stop doing eulogy videos, or is it a matter of no one he admires has died recently? I remember when he did Riff of the Week on every livestream, back in 2018.
@@lawrencetaylor4101 I used to watch reaction videos occasionally and Fil’s videos kept being suggested to me. It took awhile for me to finally watch one but then I wanted to watch lots of them. I’d never heard of the Tamplin guy before but apparently he’s got quite an audience. It’s too bad for him that he got caught out, but that’s the chance you take when you go ‘live’ on a public forum. His response to being caught out was also a bit slippery. Oh well.
Im a retired live and studio engineer with 45 hears as a pro behind me, working with some legends of popular music. You are dead right….hes miming the high notes. Hats off to you and Fil for bringing this to the attention of people, and anyone who says you’re wrong must be using something other than ears to hear 😁
@@robvoyles Folding money says that Steven Seagal would never be able to catch me. Even when he was relatively young he couldn't run and nowadays he is just a fat old broken down joke.
This has been a very interesting controversy. I unsubscribed from KTVA after Fil's analysis, and it's interesting that TH-cam keeps sending me more content on this, so I appreciate your additional input. Good on you and keep on speaking out against people that are not being honest and supporting those who care. As Fil said, it wasn't a malicious dig at Ken, he simply responded to a request from a subscriber to take a look.
Unfortunately what you have here is a man who is a serial liar. It's obvious by this point that, Ken is not capable of admitting the truth. I have always thought that he was over the top and obnoxious many times. The truth is obvious, just not to Ken. Good video bro. Fil is a class act.
When I first saw him do the credence song many years ago, I thought about taking lessons but as I watched more videos as time went on, I would have questions and those questions would get deleted from his page at that point I realized the guy was a narcissistic sociopath.
As a live sound tech myself, I clearly hear that the sound of the microphone changes. Your clearly hear a tonal difference and the pop sound of that headset-microphone.
Bang on the money. I've quite liked KT, commenting on one or two of his videos where he's chatting about lead singer comparisons etc, but he's hit a very bum note here (excuse the pun). I listened to Fil on Wings of Pegasus and let's cut to the chase. He's given a factual objective analysis of some of KT's vocals. It's as clear as day that Ken has (sadly) been miming parts but claiming otherwise. As you and others have pointed out, a large part of KT's selling point is that his vocal programme must be deliverable live. "The proof is in the singing". Ken has mimed, claiming otherwise, and gone on the attack when challenged. It's very sad and I'm utterly disappointed in Ken for not just being honest. It's a terrilbe example for up and coming singers. Bad form Ken. Bad form.
I'm seriously wondering how much of the Ken Tamplin cult response is real. Call me crazy, but I'm wondering if some of this is AI generated. I'm a Christian and I've been a fan of Ken's since high school, when I bought a couple of tapes of his band. Several years ago, I purchased his singing course and it has really helped. But man. He's clearly lying. You're right in saying that he didn't address the actual issues in his response video. I posted a very respectful question after his video and he deleted it. Personally, I'm done following him. I've unsubscribed from his channel and his email list.
What bothers me the MOST is that he solicits himself as a Christian. Then he gets called out by nearly every professional for being a fake. Once again, someone pops up in the public eye to make Christianity look phony. “With friends like these, who needs enemies?” comes to mind.
I'd like to know how you found his academy. Ive heard some of his methods aren't actually practical and could cause some vocal damage over time. It would be nice to know how you found you improved too.
I think some of the defence that comes from Christians is genuine, and comes from (a) an overly defensive reaction to someone making your community look bad, and (b) a sincere disbelief that an avowed Christian could be this dishonest. Much easier to choose to believe he’s being persecuted by the ungodly heathens.
I doubt very much it's him responding on his channel - he is so big he must have a team. Still shouldn't delete stuff but we all know that happens a lot now.
@@ryanmattie974 It was a random Google search. I was thinking about some of the bands I used to listen to back in high school and was wondering what they're up to now. I knew Ken Tamplin was the lead singer for Shout, so I did a search and found his academy. The biggest improvements I've seen are with my pitch, vocal stamina, and range. I also used to lose my voice almost anytime I would sing live. That really doesn't happen anymore. So it has helped. What I have heard people talk about is all of the vocal distortion talk, saying that maybe it's not great for your voice. However, with the styles I sing the most, I don't use vocal distortion. So that's part of his teaching that I haven't put any effort into. I hope this helps.
33:10 Considering that many of Ken's "advocates" with different accounts are literally cutting & pasting the exact same comments on any of the videos showing how he is miming his songs, there's a very good chance that those "advocate" accounts are all just Ken.
Besides the lying, it just looks bad when miming like that. It's like watching guitar playing in an animated movie. The fingers are just floating over the fretboard like the neck is made of gelatin. Ken might as well be holding a Guitar Hero controller.
@@Frip36 oh dude, it's bad. You can tell he can play, but he breaks into these leads and cool guy mimes them and you can tell he kinda knows what his fingers should do, but no way would it ever be close to clean. But again, comp the whole thing bar by bar. Who cares. But don't come out n say "Hey watch this while I shred your face off live" only to make a fool of yourself then double and triple down when called out. Again, he is talented, but has flushed any cred he had, all over ego. Sad if your 15. Pathetic when your 57.
@@Frip36 He was miming on a guitar with a standard fret board and hitting notes that could only be played on a guitar with an extended fret board. Very silly!
Fil from Wings of Pegasus, in all his videos, has never spoken negatively about any artist in his analysis videos. He explains what's going on with a performance. He does it respectively and honestly. I am someone who can't carry a tune in a bucket but I have learned so much from Fil's videos. I am subscribing to your channel also to continue learning about music. Thank you for your honesty regarding this ongoing Ken Tamplin debacle. Keep up the good work. 👍🎵🎸🎤🎶❤️
Yea. I'd rather hear a singer I like be authentic and real in the moment, and if the voice breaks and falters due to age then so what, big deal. It's like you said transcendent, reminds us we're human and we age, lets me feel more connected to the artist. If I wanted to hear a song just like it is on the album I'd stay home and listen to it instead of going to see it live.
I just saw Robert Plant with my wife and kids. He acted his age and slew the crowd. We would have drank poison if he asked us. My kids were clapping so hard after each song. Dang. Blew my mind! But the band carried him, or should I say, he allowed others to lift him to the heights… including all of us! Heck, even Allyson hit one off note! Loved it! Made it so real!
As a speaker for the American Delegation I can categorically state we do not claim Ken "Parrot Tongue" Tampon as one of us he has been traded to the Chinese Delegation in exchange for Jackie Chan. Thank you.
You explained it perfectly on how you noticed Ken was lip syncing in 5 ways Dan. Well done. As a very simple proof that it would be simply impossible to sing exactly the same way “twice”, may I add that I learnt a nice little trick with recording vocals. As I don’t have a powerful voice I simply double track the vocals. I saw a video of a sound engineer giving that tip. Essentially I record the main vocals a few times and pick the best one. Then I pick the next best one Chuck it to one side either left or right but put the volume right down. It’s amazing how it thickens the vocals. The sound engineer explained that irrespective of singing exactly the same words, pitch etc the simple fact of different breathing, mouth movements etc will make ia different sound. Hence Fil’s evidence proved it too. You know what you’re talking about Dan. You nor Fil could not have said things any more professionally. Keep up the great work. 🎸🎸🎸
@@diskgrinder Yeah the Beatles were big on the double track but Paul And John hated doing it because they had to sing exactly the same twice and sometimes it took a lot of takes (remember this is a band that could record an album in a day). One of their sound engineers basically invented the auto double track by just playing the same voice track again with a slight delay. ABBA also used this extensively to make it sound like both girls were singing when often only one was.
Fascinating this. I, like you, am / have been a music professional most of my life, studied classical rock jazz etc gigging performing studio owner engineer etc etc but winding down now, spend more time teaching these days (coincidentally not far from you!). Fil is absolutely brilliant, in a way that is so refreshing and seems a really nice guy too. He's opened up Pandora's box in the last couple of years regarding the 'validity' of 'genuine' live performances from some of even the biggest names. From what I gather it also seems it's more to do with the higher up suits in record companies rather than the singers themselves who are tampering with the actually originally recorded wave forms. It's shocking to think they tampered with Freddie's vocals ! ( a BeeGees one as well I think) as Fil enlightened us all recently. Ken Tamplin is someone I have never taken too - he spends too much time blowing smoke to the rear for me and I also noticed a long time ago, especially in his guitar playing too, that he wasn't playing or singing some notes here and there. Only personal but his voice sounds gratingly metallic for me but that's just taste. In terms of how he's behaved during this illustrates how much of a bully he must be to show zero respect for the world in general and even moreso for us musicians. I mean if he thinks as you say, that we cannot hear this stuff then it tells you an awful lot about him doesn't it? As Fil illustrated last week Tamplin is getting notes on his guitar that are not even on the guitar!! kinda says it all I think...
Fil, is a straight shooter, a generous guy. A real joy. Been watching him for a decade. If Fil calls you out, because it's just not his style. Pay attention.
I appreciate your work and effort into the KT situation that’s blowing up the YT vocal coach world right now. My opinion is this is the best non biased review outside of WOP but with a little more depth. I was a huge Shout/Tamplin fan beginning with the release of the two original albums were hot of the press. I know the music by heart so I instantly knew he was singing from the studio tracks. I wish I still had the interview from back in the day where he discussed the speeding up of the background vocal to match the current scene at that time citing Def Lepard and others as an example.
Funny, I made the same comment-his real fans know he's lip syncing because when I hear that chorus from the original CD in my head, it's the exact same as his current "live" version but none of the rest of the song is.
As a person who made a living, full-time for 22 years singing, I never understood that tongue technique he does. Doesn't do anything and looks ridiculous. I was full of myself when I was young, but have since grown up. Not only is he saying he's the greatest singer, but also a Christian. Well. Actions speak louder than words.
Some of his reaction videos are useful. But I've found it works best to scroll the screen up so that I don't see Tamplin's face. Then I don't see the weird facial expressions and the tongue thing.
That tongue thing is just another classic example of a quack misunderstanding the works of authority figures in a field and putting their own spin into it. The tongue is slightly retracted and only the back of the tongue moves in position based on the vowel. There are some demonstrations of it done under the scan on TH-cam
that tongue thing is jsut cringe. when I started my lourny to learn to sing. i fond him after like a year. and was like bro. I'm literally better, what tf is going on. I did throat singing off an don for years naturalkly. He talked a big game about his tongue, and I'm thinking youre wrong about it, looks stupid. and he clearly has 0 idea about the power the tongue has. Finding overtone singing naturally myself. all that combhined made me call him a scammer and moved on. got attacked by the cult never trust a man with a lizard tongue
32:18 I couldn’t help but notice that when he made a fool of himself here, he didn’t hit a high note. He yelled in the tenor range. I would think he’d like to hit a high note like something John Anderson (Yes) would have hit in the early 80’s. But, no. He bores us with a mediocre note.
Fil also did a video showing that Ken was not actually playing his guitar in some of his videos. Ken was finger-syncing. I don't follow Ken but I think he should have just come clean like you suggested.
With the videos in question being in a studio/rehearsal room, I do think Tamplin was physically playing the guitar in the room. It’s just that what he was playing in the room wasn’t the audio we hear in the videos. And it’s understandable why… his picking technique is very sloppy and inefficient, meaning he would generally have trouble consistently playing the same parts cleanly. And on the first video, his wide picking motion is way too slow to produce the barrage the clean alternate picked notes at the tempo we heard them (not to mention the arpeggios we heard that he didn’t physically play).
@@Fedorevsky yeah, hitting a note/pitch that requires a 24 fret guitar (without bending, which he didn’t do) on a 21 fret guitar was just embarrassing.
At this point I am firmly convinced that Socrates already got it spot on back in antiquity: Lying, and lying often and consistently, rots your brain and character and turns you into a monstrous caricature of what you may have once been. I see it so often, people who started professionally lying at one point and then time goes on and eventually they fully believe their own bullshit and just go completely delusional. At that point it's over, there's no going back, they are hollow shells with no light in their eyes.
Not even that, but at the same time not addressing any of the critique, instead taking words out of context to move the goalpost so that he is able to say that others do that as well. people: I think he is helping himself a bit on the high notes that are harder to hit when you age. him: anyone uses backing tracks. Also let me show you that I can hit low notes just fine.
I think the best example of a backing track would be the operatic section of Bohemian Rhapsody but the band didnt pretend to sing it on stage! This was a point where the band took a quick break as they obviously knew they could never replicate that part of the recording live. No one ever complained about it cause they left the stage as they showed the video for that part. I also wrote a fairly decent comment telling him if he had just came out and said “Sorry guys I hate to admit it but I kinda cheated on some of the higher vocals because I was sick, nervous, etc. and didnt want to disappoint anyone that came to see us.” Nothing would have came to this and whatever did would be over by now. Instead he dug in his heels and outright lied about it again, replied to comments he didnt like with “where the proof is STILL in the singing” and posted a link to Fil being on Xfactor and losing. Now, hes (or someone else I really have no idea who) are replying to negative comments on other people’s pages with “this is Ken’s lawyer…” What lawyer would actually take this on when they know there is SCIENTIFIC PROOF he is doing what people are accusing him of? Another vocal couch mentioned the fact he only sings these older bands music. Im kinda wondering if half of the stuff he posts is also from 30 years ago? As far as Im concerned, at this point) the man is reaping what he sowed and hes lucky if he doesnt face a class action lawsuit from his current and former students for fraud. Just saying… Sadly, all of this could have been avoided if he just told the truth.
Nightwish (which Ken mentioned) makes heavy use of backing tracks. But they pretty much have to… it’s not practical or cost effective to have an entire choir and orchestra touring with them, and their music couldn’t be the symphonic metal they’re known for with just a 5 piece band on stage and all those other elements removed. But they also aren’t pretending something is live when it isn’t.
@@songfulmusicofsongs no click track I dont think but they did play the vid during that section if they had to play it live so its kinda a backing track. Later they just the beginning and end of the song and mixed a couple of others in the middle.
Well said Sir! I’m a great fan of Fils. I’m an aging vocal coach, classically trained singer. Now, I’ve been very ill over the years and my voice dropped just like a man’s in my 30s, (after a course of medication), and I had about 3 weeks to retrain my voice for a recording session, fortunately I had the skills to help me do this. In my 40 s to 50s I was singing Calypso BV’,s harmony & occasional Lead for around 15 years, strictly LIVE, no backing tapes no pitch correction.Did it originally to help get a great front man & musician get a vocal section together, after a year it ended up being me. At under 40 I managed all the parts I need to cover. - phew! By my 50s to 60s I sounded soo different and had to continually alter my technique. Might’ve been slower if I’d avoided a seriously invasive surgical procedure. Now I stick to BVs and close harmony. All this is just to state that you CANNOT sound the same in your 40s as when you started. Rant over, loved your vid & will watch more ………. AGREE SO FULLY. x Jenn
Yeah, but he makes it sound in his video, as if he sings live. I believe he sang live - it is just not the whole time you could hear his live singing. I mean, you gotta respect, the whole setup... that takes effort. What makes it especially cringeworthy to me is his guitar "playing". Sure, he can play. But not what he pretends to be playing - meaning, what we currently hear. So, there is a pattern. Honestly. F*** him.
To be fair, my comments on that channel asking if the owner still makes music or just does music exposé tabloid content now also get deleted or unanswered. It wasn't an attack or anything I just want to know so I know if I really care to see 100 exposé tabloid videos a week. Don't really care which drummers on Earth can actually play 400 beats per minute either, that's what they make MIDI drum programming for
it's moving the goalposts. And he moves them to a position where both, using backing tracks and hitting low notes are normal. But it was never about that.
Spot on! This video is 100% correct. You can clearly tell when the studio vocals kick in. He tends to start and end each song with his live vocals in order to engage conversation with the audience and make it appear as if it’s all live. As soon as any high vocals kick in, he switches to lip synching. Also quite obvious that all the backing vocals are lip synched.
Hi Dan. I'm a first time viewer, and really enjoyed this video. Please excuse the excess verbosity... As an English person from the north (Liverpool ), our motto generally is why use 1 word when you can use 10! I regularly watch Fil and followed the whole "Fil vs Ken" saga from his channel (cos there were no critical comments on Ken's - they'd all 'somehow' disappeared!). It's interesting to see it from a different viewpoint, particularly from someone like you who knows how it all works! I think it's really sad that so many people use the technology to try to fool us into believing they are better than they really are. I don't necessarily object to pitch shifting software if it is used as originally intended - to make the voice OBVIOUSLY different (Cher on "Believe", Madonna on "Ray of Light" etc), but Fil's recent long form vid looking at Taylor Swift's "live" Eras tour is a case in point. Fil was able to show that in two separate shows, her vocal was EXACTLY THE SAME. Using his voice analysing thingy it was as clear as day that her vocal was totally lip-synched throughout the whole show. As a comparison, as you made very clear, NOBODY said that Ken mimed his whole show. There were parts where he sang live (where the "over 100 differences" came from), but other parts that were very obviously mimed. Contrary to you however, I think it is important that people DO leave comments on Ken's videos - particularly the last one you showed. The more people who challenge him, the less likely it is that he can ignore it. Eventually, if enough people POLITELY point out the things you and Fil have highlighted, he will have to come clean. Anyway, rant over. Thanks if you tead all this. Regardless, I am subbing to your channel to check out you and your mate being "Grumpy Old Men"!! - Cheers!
Ken is dishonest and full of it. Notice how carefully he worded his video. "That IS me singing." That's true but from 35 years ago. He didn't say that he DIDN'T lip sync and all his vocals on that show were live. Interesting.
He was lip-synching already back in 1989 by the way, in his so called "prime". Tamplin was always a lousy singer, yeah he could hit high notes here and there, but it was mostly studio stuff with hundred takes and all kind of tricks. Live he mostly sucked and always had a garbage tone. Oh, he mimes his guitar playing too. Average, basic player that considers himself one of the great 80s shredders, just ridiculous. The guy is a fraud, liar, narcissist and he's insane.
At first, after so many other videos on the subject, I wrote, "Not another one of these. Most people should not be making videos. Everyone milks one thing, and few ever just have any personal creation," before I watched the video, just to see this subject covered once more, but it slipped my mind afterwards to comment after the viewing and say that your video was one of only three good ones on this matter. You are a gracious man whose coverage is fair. But what I commented at first is suitable for almost all channels on youtube, whether discussing Ken Tamplin, or tv shows a week before they air, etc. I have lost my voice twice, once after shouting for my life when forgotten in a walk-in oven that was locked and soon to be fired up. I can sympathize with those who sometimes lose their voices at bad times, while remembering how they once sang before.
One of the most depressing things to me is that people can't tell when something's live or mimed anymore. I see "live" videos from famous pop stars all the time that are clearly mimed. The comments are flooded with people praising their live singing. The thing is a lot of these singers are actually great singers. But that doesn't mean they were singing live in a particular video. It's very easy to hear the difference too. It's not just whether the singer's lips line up. It's if the audio sounds too clean and the performance is too perfect. I think people need to go to a jazz club or an orchestral performance and hear some of the greatest musicians in the world playing un-mimed music. And they need to pay attention to how, even though these musicians are miles beyond almost everyone else as performers, their stuff STILL sounds imperfect. And then come back to TH-cam and listen to some recent "live" performances. Once your ears have acclimated to what actual live music sounds like, it should be very obvious.
It’s not just the technical production of the vocal that radically changes between sections, it’s the quality of the voice itself. There is no way that the croaky, pitchy voice doing the low register parts, which is very clearly approaching the very top of its available range on the highest notes of those lower register parts, would ever be capable of the pristinely clean high register parts. Those two sounds are simply not being produced by the same larynx on the same day. You can tell it’s the same guy, but that it’s either the same guy with and without a bad case of laryngitis, or the same guy decades apart. Given that the singer in question is over sixty and clearly has no compunction about lying, my money’s on the latter.
Here's the thing- ppl should learn to trust themselves because I guarantee you there are tons of ppl out there who just like me when they saw Ken sing- knew something wasn't right. We're not trained enough, nor are we sitting there trying to nitpick it, so we can't put our finger on what it is, we just know- that voice doesn't look or sound like it's coming out of that head. I had this feeling several times watching Ken sing both on television and online- but I shrugged it off because I thought "He's a vocal coach, he wouldn't be able to get away with that." Wrong. He did get away with it, for a long time. I should've trusted my gut. Now granted, I have been playing guitar in bands for over 30 years, so I've been around a ton of live performances and watched thousands of ppl sing so- maybe that's why I was able to detect something was amiss- Idk. Tbh though, I have a hunch almost everyone got this feeling at different times from ken- and most of us excused it away. As for Fil, - he's amazing- I love the guy. He's one of the few truly honest ppl in the business. Ken is biting off more than he can handle to- Fil knows his shit and he knows how to prove it beyond question. He will not flatter you or spare your feelings either- he understands how cruel that is to do to someone in this niche. He will give you the flat, honest truth- that's so hard to find. It makes you feel like he respects you as a musician to- instead of trying to patronize you or spare your feelings like you're a child or something he treats you like his equal and just tells you the truth. Rock on Fil, we're with you to the end man.
People need to stop using 'vs'. Fil never attacked or set out to ruin Tamplin's reputation, he responded to a request to analyse Ken's videos, which he unbiasedly did. And then he moved on. Unfortunately Ken's response has left him looking like a puppy sitting next to a pile of poo.
I've made this comment several times on different channels since this controversy began. I'm 66. In my youth, I had a 4-octave range. That was my trumpet teacher and my vocal coaches saying that. I was 18-21. I can assure you, that I do not have that kind of range now. Perhaps if I trained as I did then, I might get some of my top end back, but I'll never be able to do what I did then.
Thank you! I am so glad that someone explained this and called him out for the liar he is. I watch Fil and love his stuff...but he was far too polite on this one. This made me subscribe.
I have no dog in this fight. I'm not Ken fan or hater. I'm not a singer nor I'm a psychologist. But all that redirection and projection and gaslighting was really something to watch. One thing is for sure, this Ken guy has some serious character flaws/deficiencies. Not even so much for lipsynching and the dishonesty associated with that, but the denial and just how far he's willing to go in hopes of keeping the lie alive and this charade going. Just, wow.😳
Personally I'm getting tired of hearing Ken's voice whether if he's singing or talking he's getting on my nerves with all his boasting and self promoting still. It's like he's totally ignoring the fact that he's been outed... uh, vocal wise anyway. 😳
Clouding the argument seems like the way to refocus this miming issue by Ken Tamplin. The cover up adds more fuel to the fire and it will just continue to build more heat from his gaslighting. I have watched Ken's video before and admittedly was impressed with his singing ability. I watched to learn something although it did not really matter for the songs i normally sing does not require very high notes as I cover generally crooning music. I agree if one performs live, it should be totally live especially when people pay for the live experience. State a disclaimer otherwise. Thank you for your observation. It was totally spot on.
“The Proof Is In The Lip-Synching” The cognitive dissonance amongst his followers is incredible. And the gaslighting, as you say, is incredibly cynical and underhanded. At least we know that many of the his followers are either bots of his, or multiple accounts that he has created. Well done for pointing out that he’s deleting comments, as well.
I am absolutely astounded at the gall of this man. To accuse someone of doing exactly what you are doing (openly and obviously) is just disgusting, in my opinion. There are so many different strategies on display here. Clouding the issue (or deflecting, one might say) by pretending he is being accused of using a backing track in his live sets (of course no one cares about backing tracks). Gaslighting (or just outright lying?) his audience by talking about his messages being deleted. And another example of deflection when he talks about it all being done for clicks and views and 'the algorithm'
It’s all very odd. Ken doesn’t need to do any of this nonsense. He’s still a good singer, he just can’t sing like he could when he was 25. None of us can. After 35 years singing professionally, my voice is absolutely not the same as it was even 5 years ago. I’ve lost a bit of range and power. But I’ve adapted. There’s no shame in it. Just be honest.
Thank you so much for this reaction and analyzing. I appreciate your honesty and integrity. It seems the more AI gets into music, the less music there will be. I watch FIL and his analysis videos, and the proof is in the data, not the singing. I played orchestral clarinet and oboe, and I think it will be a sad day indeed when classical music becomes obsolete and woodwinds can be put on a backing track, and we can't tell the difference between whether the clarinet is just miming the solo. Again, my thanks to you and Fil for keeping it real and keeping the industry honest. Cheers.
great video. ken could have reacted literally in any other way and been ok, he could even have said 'yeah i mime to ports of my show,. get over it' and it would have been better. instead he's turned into an old man preaching to experienced internet users about 'the algorithm' lol. man up ken, it's ok to not be perfect.
Good work - a great summary/overview for anyone who hasn’t been following the recent proceedings as they unfolded. And while Fil is always very careful to stick to the facts and evidence (to his credit!), you’ve been able to add a dose of healthy cynicism ! As for Mr T himself ..… I wouldn’t say he’s a narcissist, but if you check the credits for his channel I wouldn’t be surprised if his response videos feature Ken Tamplin of Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, and are Written & Directed by Ken Tamplin for KT Enterprises International. Executive Producer is Ken Tamplin for 20th Century Ken, and Special Music Effects Consultant is Dr Kenneth Tampering. Views and opinions expressed are solely those of Ken Tamplin, and are not open to discussion or criticism, and any comments posted may be deleted without notice.
I totally agree with you that Ken is the king of Talking Bollocks. I have been a follower of both Ken and wings of Pegasus for a long time. I’ve always thought that Ken was a little over animated but I wouldn’t dismiss all of his advice, as no one else is here. Fil of Wings Of Pegasus is excellent at being a “musical forensic scientist “ he is a master at analysing Vocals using top notch software. None of Fils findings are intended to “bring anyone Down “ they are educational. If Ken had committed crime and his fingerprints were taken and analysed forensically and his involvement in that crime was proved I think he would be as much in denial as he is with the fact that he is Lip Syncing now…” Prove It”. How on earth Ken thinks that click bait and revenue are generated in this way is unbelievable….he needs better advisors.
You're absolutely right. I record/mix studio as well as live performances and they need to be treated differently, because they're completely different sources of audio. Also don't worry about having to tune down. I've recently done that and now singing better than ever (although it probably means I wrote the songs in the wrong key in the first place). I'm enjoying playing live more than ever. Great video - subscribed!
For someone who has perfect pitch, tuning down (or any key change for that matter) can drive them crazy. It sounds completely different. From an audience perspective, they often feel the difference but can't quite put their finger on it. Glad you're enjoying playing live though!! Rock on!
Good video. Thank you. So glad there are people like you, and particularly Fil, around, and who have the energy to address people denying having used pitch correction software. Unfortunately, people will often reflexively defend someone or something they like, and I think that is what Ken T.'s fans and followers are doing.
Great video, Dan! Your points about new, upcoming bands are spot on. After The Beatles hit it big, they created a gazillion teenage boys and girls who wanted to be in bands and be the next Beatles. What people didn't know was that The Beatles had numerous "residencies" in clubs in Germany where they had to perform marathon sets for hours on end. It must have been grueling, and they must have asked themselves, "Is this really worth it?" But it was there that they honed their playing skills until they were razor-sharp. Back in England, John and Paul began developing their songwriting skill, which we know was unparalleled. Then they had the good fortune (pun intended) to team up with a record producer who turned out to be a genius and who allowed four young, 21-year-old kids to make the music that changed the world. So while it seemed to us in the U.S. that The Beatles were an "overnight success," that was far from the truth. They paid their dues, man. Kids getting together in some random garage would never...**could never** replicate The Beatles' success and longevity. They were a "once in a lifetime" thing. The kids you mentor may not like to hear what you say, but it is the God's honest truth. As for Ken Tamplin...well...he's dug his own hole, hasn't he? His silly (over-)reaction to Fil's video was so disproportionate that other content creators (like yourself, Dan) have noticed and jumped on the dog-pile. Ken brought much more attention to himself and his KTVA than he perhaps intended. Side note: I saw Billy Idol recently (Spring, 2024, with Steve Stevens!). And although he played all of his classics, he did not try to replicate his screaming vocals from the songs he created back in the 1980s. He changed things up to accommodate his 68-year-old voice (68!!) - and you know what? He sounded GREAT! Ken should just own up to using technology to "help out" a bit in his live performances. Still a good/great singer, yeah. But sticking to the, "This is all me, 100% live, all the time," is just foolish. Nobody believes him.
Great job, Dan. As a fan with minimal musical ability, I can't hear or tell the difference. Thank goodness for you pros! Also, have you seen the Freddie Mercury interview where he's asked what he's going to do after his singing career and he says, "I know. I can't be doing this when I'm 50. That would be ridiculous!" How times have changed as the rockers age. And I totally agree with your point about "perfection."
I think you've summed up perfectly my main gripe. He's giving false impressions of what is possible with your voice. I think of people like Tom Jones and the late Tony Bennett who can still give it in later life and others who adapt to the aging process like Paul McCartney and Cindy Lauper znd manage to provide great shows with their authentic voices
I didn't notice when I saw his clips the other day in Fil's response, but it is so frickin weird that there is nothing but a few fake plants on those shelves behind Ken. I think the contrast is just so upfront when compared to those sweet ass sound panels you're surrounded by. Anyways, first time viewer of your channel, nice firsthand insight on this situation. You were tasteful and patient in your breakdown and I look forward to checking out some of your other videos/music.
Fil touched on this as well. I believe his take from that gesture was to give cover. In the line of "oh my microphone is cutting out - are we back on?"
I think that’s along the same lines as what Dan was saying about singers having more exaggerated unnatural mouth movements when lip syncing, where it happens because when they aren’t actually singing they’re much more aware and focused on what their mouth is doing. So, same thing.. Tamplin is much more aware of the mic when he’s faking it than when he’s actually singing.
Thank you. I could hear the tonal change (and reverb change) when the live vocal dropped out, and see the difference in his breathing. Reading a lot of the comments on Fil's channel had me wondering if I'd lost my mind! Look to Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell and many others for examples of aging gracefully, and using change to great artistic effect.
A really good, calm, sincere video on this controversy. And good, sound advice for singers and musicians. Thanks, Dan. I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this issue after having discovered it through Fil.
Ken's defensiveness & arrogance are obnoxious. Narcissists are notoriously thin-skinned. On the other hand, Fil's integrity & honesty shine through. Technological advances allow Ken to commit fraud & Fil to uncover the fraud.
A prime example of voices aging I would point to would be Ann Wilson and Pat Benatar, both ladies still can sign quite well, however the range and power is no longer there, and that's okay, they are past 60 so it is to be expected.
If a submarine has a torpedo coming towards it, it can release a bunch of metal debris that can cause the torpedo’s homing device to essentially become confused and then attack the debris. In this way the submarine is saved from the torpedo. This is basically what Ken Tamplin is doing by spouting a bunch of gaslighting and other verbal debris. It doesn’t appear to be working very well though.
You delivered a very rational and unprejudiced analysis here. No histrionics (Ken The Drama Guy), no misdirection ("Yeah if you wanna go to the West Coast, head for New York!" -Ken Tamblin, 2024), and no ad hominem or gaslighting. Pretty awesome. I subscribed.
I've been a Fil fan for years. He doesn't take delight in these stories, and it actually saddens him when these techniques are used and lied about. He has impeccable integrity.
Quite right, Fil is a genuinely nice guy. Top quality fella!
Well said.
On the whole he seems good. One of the few on here who do proper analysis and not just taking the easy route.
There’s times I watch and think he’s being a bit passive aggressive though. Maybe I’m reading it all off but he comes across as a bit smug at times.
Fil really just tells the facts. It's up to us to decide what to do with it.
Fil is great. Always polite.
@@jonathanmarkham1998 I find that most times he acts smug is when someone doubles down on something that is indefensible.
Baez should be a teacher instead of Ken with that integrity
She has class
I had thyroid cancer and my vocal chords are stapled together now. Lost all my highs but now I retune music down to my present vocal range and it works great. She should do that too. All older singers should learn to.
You are absolutely correct! Age with grace not disgrace!

Ken Tamplin taught Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton everything they know.

Don't forget "I'm playing notes on my guitar that aren't even possible for this guitar"
Honestly, if Axel Rose had to perform with some pre-recorded parts of the song, not singing, I would have a historic orgasm, since I never got to see Guns live. Nobody cares about that, and most don't even realize it when they're live. What irritates most people is trying to take us for fools
Narcissists have a hard time dealing with reality.
Yep you nailed it!!

Who is Phi?
I’ve hear Ken is thinking of starting a new podcast called “Between Three Ferns.”
@@victoryak86 I agree... and the three ferns title is perfect 😃
I agree because good technique can be learned where as what you sound like can sometimes be out of your control some are just more gifted. I think of it like teaching someone how to bench press properly, you may not be as strong as them but can demonstrate proper technique which in turn will help them be better
Ken uses bad technique and he sounds strained all the time. He can't use BELTING range at all. When I belt I will get LOUD.

You Brits are so kind. Thanks for your honesty. Enjoyed your take. Will become a subscriber.
Thanks for your honest interpretation. Been a Fil follower for years. He’s always been honest too. Subscribed.
Ken says "we must become critical thinkers" 😂 We have, Ken. We see the decades of deception. Thanks for the advice.

Very well analyzed, sir. Respectful, honest, and spot on.
Great job!
They're probably students that are in denial. Possibly Ken is a good or great teacher, but that's a separate discussion.
Ken is talented, and he's made himself a joke. His guitar lead miming is the worst
Besides the lying, it just looks bad when miming like that. It's like watching guitar playing in an animated movie. The fingers are just floating over the fretboard like the neck is made of gelatin. Ken might as well be holding a Guitar Hero controller.
It was hilarious when Fil pointed out that he was playing notes that can't even be played on his guitar. 🤣
Holy crap, he lied about his guitar playing too? LOL
Very silly!

I am subscribing to your channel also to continue learning about music. Thank you for your honesty regarding this ongoing Ken Tamplin debacle. Keep up the good work. 👍🎵🎸🎤🎶❤️
It is a most welcome transcending experience to hear an artist sing a song from my youth in their current older voice that has aged 30 years with me.
John Lennon famously hated his voice and double tracked everything he sang, so you’re in good company (according to something I heard 24 years ago)

@@campbell1446 Of course it's subjective, but I don't think he's very good. Very nasal, and contrived.

I couldn’t help but notice that when he made a fool of himself here, he didn’t hit a high note. He yelled in the tenor range. I would think he’d like to hit a high note like something John Anderson (Yes) would have hit in the early 80’s. But, no. He bores us with a mediocre note.
I thought the same. It was not even near that high range he was pretending to sing..and he sounded pretty noisy doing it.
What note was that? Didn't sound that mediocre given how chesty it was.
@@podrickfookinpayne2329it wasn't high. Powerful but mid range
@totallyfrozen, Jon Anderson can still hit some impressive high notes. He’s just turned 80, last week.
I can't even tell if it's an A3 or a A4 tbh neither of which is a high note. Pretty sure it's an A3.
Fil also did a video showing that Ken was not actually playing his guitar in some of his videos. Ken was finger-syncing. I don't follow Ken but I think he should have just come clean like you suggested.
And doing so on a guitar with less frets than the one used in the recording he was miming playing phantom notes at points, lol
Omg that is embarrassing. 😂
@Wyl7 Is it the low or the high notes that will be missing on a 21 fret guitarr? Longer neck, or frets closer up to the pickups?
It takes a lot of balls to deliver a sermon on "critical thinking" while provably lying through your teeth dead into the camera.
Just saying…
Sadly, all of this could have been avoided if he just told the truth.
...because Queen were / are a class act. And Ken T is... not.
@@shorerocks agreed! 110% and yet Ken has the gaul to criticize, IMO, the greatest voice and frontman of all time!
Still, Queen played Bohemian Rhapsody without backing track. And without click track.
AGREE SO FULLY. x Jenn
Ken admitted lipsyncing in a comment himself. The comment was shown in a follow up video of Wings Of Pegasus and his comment has been since deleted.
Honestly. F*** him.
No, he only admitted the backing track contained lead vocals, but he said he was singing live over it.
@@Bravilor Or you could argue that the lead vocals in the backing track are louder than his live vocals he sung over the backing track.
@@mak8836 So loud that it was the only vocal line heard :)
To be fair, my comments on that channel asking if the owner still makes music or just does music exposé tabloid content now also get deleted or unanswered. It wasn't an attack or anything I just want to know so I know if I really care to see 100 exposé tabloid videos a week. Don't really care which drummers on Earth can actually play 400 beats per minute either, that's what they make MIDI drum programming for
Backing tracks isn't the argument. Saying it is is a language of argument trick called a straw-man argument. It's deception plain and simple.
Not an actual example of a straw man.
it's moving the goalposts.
Terrific video post: intelligent and measured, yet devastating. Thank you
A very well articulated, reasoned, and delivered view on the matter. Well done!!
Oh the "live" thing vexes me, as well. Along with "acapella" when it's an isolated studio vocal. 😒
Great video! Ken: "the truth shall set you free"...
Or he can ask Jesus for forgiveness...
All you have to do is see Fil’s sweet smile when he hears a good performance. He is talented and trustworthy ❤
I didn't even think the guitars were all live. There was so much going on with the sound.
Pale wizard. You seem like an understated, low key, honest guy. I appreciate your candor!!
Poor pile of poo : (
They have OPPOSING narratives/points of view, which is succinctly denoted by the “vs”. Intent is irrelevant.
I love how Ken Tamplin kept counter attacking Fil Henley so much that Fill started exposing Ken's Guitar Playing as "Fradulent" TOO!
This was a spot-on video, great job!
“The Proof Is In The Lip-Synching”
The cognitive dissonance amongst his followers is incredible.
Exactly. Me thinks he has a bit of a god complex.
Dan, your way of proving and defending the point is impeccable. Great video by a true professional. Keep up the good work ✊
Amazing he keeps referencing a character from “Pinocchio”!😂 Freudian slip?😜
It's not that simple because he was charging people $700 and hour. So they'd have a good case for a refund and maybe lawsuit for fraud.

Great overview and very respectful and informative. Thank you.
Rock on!

Very brave to get in on this feud. 🙂
The ‘tell’ was him talking superfluously during the low-range bits, but never once in the higher range bits. Your analysis was spot-on mate 👍
Could give two squats about Tamplin, But Fil channel is pointing out things we all know is happening
It’s great that you & Phil can bring us the truth !
Clear changes/differences in the vocal in the examples that you shared. Easy to hear.
It's interesting how his hand goes up to his mic whenever he's lipsyncing.
Probably some unpaid intern sitting by the mixing desk, always on the lookout for his sign to push "that button".
I thought it was more of a "tell"
@@TheSpacehead63 Probably, but I think my version is funnier.
Well done...go on...just like Fil from Wings of Pegasus!!
So he’s a chaffinch?
Thank you for your intelligent clarity.
