The only thing here that's new is the Pixel supporting video over USB-C out of the box. None of the desktop mode stuff is new - this is still the same Android 14 developer mode desktop UI that has been around the whole time (including on older Pixels). This is essentially the same video ETA put out 4 months ago with the Pixel 8 Pro (after it had video out functionality enabled). Actual changes to this mode are meant to come with Android 15.
When I got my hands on some USB-C docks with an HDMI port and a monitor with Thunderbolt, I immediately had to try this with my Pixel 8. I hope Android 15 will actually bring some video settings for the secondary display option. I can imagine playing movies and live TV straight from the phone to the larger screen.
Wish they would just unify android into chrome OS and make the phone into a more official desktop. Then add an occulink port for eGPU gaming ;) but since this is a google product I expect it will become an eternal beta feature.
This really is what I longed to see! In fact, this is what I expected Windows phone to be. I really want Google to put more resources and accelerate the development.
Oh man, I so wanted this to work. Got a monitor, a docking device, keyboard and mouse. First issue is that "force desktop mode" is no longer in the display options. I searched and found what I thought was a workaround. But my Pixel 9 Pro XL won't even mirror for more than a couple of minutes on my monitor, much less go into anything resembling desktop mode. The kicker was when my phone started just shutting down when I plugged it in (did it 3 times). That scared me enough that I think I'm going to wait a month or so do see what happens with whatever Google is supposedly doing to make desktop mode more seamless and easy to use (maybe with developer settings?).
For me, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is the phone of the year. As someone with a disability, I love the voice command feature-it's just impeccable, even better than on the iPhone. The streamlined and minimalist Android interface, especially in the settings, is another strong point. However, I'm not ready to switch from my iPhone just yet for the simple reason that the iPhone is still superior in terms of photo and video quality. They rarely upgrade the cameras too, its all software like any other brand. 40% camera 60% software processing

@Mantenner tensor has only been Mali chipped it going to tsmc and fully custom will make a big difference. Now how much difference depends on how much google takes advantage of it.
