Thank you, because of this video I was able to make the string changes to my cheap Squier Stratocaster. The only thing issue I ran into was the low F# string was causing pull on the temolo bridge raising it up, so what I did was tighten the tremolo springs and block the bridge with some coins lol. But again thank you for this vid it was very informative and helped a lot, now I can play my favourite Architects songs👍
Have you looked at you neck setup? It could be creating unnecessary tension on your bridge? Sometime just a slight adjustment can make a huge difference.
Yeah gosh how similar are they. Not only do they use a similar style tuning but the rhythm is pretty close as well. I love both riffs but they are super close :)

Also. If you have a guitar with a floyd is makes it really easy. The nut and clamp on a floyd makes it super easy. You can block it if you want it to be a hardtail or just use the floyd floating (like I do)
I remember the first band I personally remember doing this was Sevendust back in '99 on the song Home (same tuning but in G#). Always thought it was so cool. I have one of my guitars in a similar tuning.
Earlier Architects used low G#. You can think of the tuning as a 7 string in G# standard without the 6th string. With F# it's a Drop F# 7 string without the 6th. This helped me comprehend the tuning a bit more.
Yeah that’s true on earlier albums they had the G# tuning. Which is pretty easy to do. Use the same gauge strings just tune that 6th string up a step. And yeah that’s a good way at looking at the tubingZ it’s like a low tuned 7-string but missing the 6th string.

Yeah, you can definitely do this tuning style on a baritone. Just need to adjust the string gauges. What is the scale length of your Baritone? For example if its a 27-inch, then maybe rather use a 72 on the 6th string, and then it can jump down to a 42 or so for the 5th string and so on. So just take the gauges down slightly. You'll probably have to experiment with a few gauges to see what feels right but totally do-able. For example in this video of mine, I do the same tuning on my 30-inch scale baritone, but instead have tuned it down to D1: th-cam.com/video/XRLD8JJUw2o/w-d-xo.html
Yeah I heard they use this tuning as well. Its a fun tuning to use. I find I write different when I use it. You get that string skipping vibe without having to skip a string.
I think I-ve heard that Wage War guitarists actually tune to Drop A# and for the Drop F songs they use a pitch pedal (digitech drop pedal). I-ve tried the same with the Pitch pedal that comes with my line 6 helix but it only stands good for one semitone low. That-s why many line 6 helix users buy a digitech drop pedal for that purpose. Thanks glad you enjoyed the video. And yeah they don’t use a Drop effect but instead have a thick gauge .80 on the 6th string to tune down to F. But they also tune this string up to G and A#. I’ve read they use the Ernie Ball Bot Even Slinky set and the switch the .56 out for an .80 but I found this Ernie Ball 8-string Top Heavy art came close without having to buy the Not Even Slinky set and then a separate .80. They do use a Digitech Whammy pedal for pitching up and pitching down effects but not that I’m aware of for drop tuning a whole guitar. But definitely try this octave style tuning out. It’s really fun to use. Pretty much like an 8-string but missing the 7th string and 1st string.
Do you know the name of this tuning? For what I see is like Dropping again the 6th string till the fifth. It could be named something like 5th Drop A# (?
Recommend by the Dingwall guy: Use a drill bit and some sandpaper. I unfortunately tried to file the nut with a string and broke a piece off. Super cool vid man, thanks for doing this
Great video! For me I have been using the Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky set and it works great! Going down to F# things get a bit floppy as they only go up to 62 gauge, but one can always use this style tuning but tune up a few steps, say Ab or something and get the same effect (just in a slightly higher key)
Doing the same with a 30 scale guitar. Tuned the guitar to E1 Standard, then lowered E1 to A0. Sounds cool, but I honestly do not know what to do with it. I feel like a string is missing 😅
Yeah I did a similar thing with my Jazzmaster Baritone 30 inch. Did the Octave tuning with B0. Actually wrote a whole song with it. So keep messing around. Some ideas will come out of it.

Yes it must sit flush on the bottom and be wide enough to accommodate the thicker string. Don't file it down any deeper, just wider. If you file it too wide, the string will buzz at the nut. So its basically the nut slot width you want to get right

Sevendust use a similar tuning except they're in G instead of F#. It's like a combo of that Architects tuning and DADGAD tuning and it's really fun to play in. From low to high it's G G C F G C.
@@GaryHiebner They started using it on the Kill The Flaw album. Songs like Death Dance, Not Today and Silly Beast are all in that G tuning. They use it up in G# as well for songs like Chop and Unforgiven.
Oh cool. I knew they used some Baritones and tuned down to G. But didn't know they used the same tunings as the Architects but just a step down. Gonna explore this more. Its such a fun tuning to use.

Their tuning is basically a full step down (almost like Drop C like Deftones White Pony album) whereas Architects are playing a step and a half lower than standard (which is commonly used for drop B). They both sound awesome!

I’m using TH-U mainly to get the guitar tone. But you can get a similar tone with most guitar modeling software. Use a 5150/6505 amp head emulation model with the lead channel. With this going to an Orange 4 x 12 speaker cabinet with an SM7 mic off axis. And then a tube screamer in front of the amp to focus the sound. And then follow the same EQ and compression settings with the EQs and compressors you have.
Alternatively, if you have money to spend you can get a digitech drop pedal and then you only really have to do e minor and b minor (I think, I can't remember what I tuned my guitar to for it tbh) for the low e. You'll still need a thicker gage to make b minor sound good but you'll be fine.
The fun in this tuning is the octave jump between the 6th and 5th string. So yeah if you didn't want super thick strongs and had a Digitect drop. You could keep your guitar in E standard and then justbtuned to E down to an A. Will still need a tixker string. Like maybe a 60. And then you can use the drop to get it from A down to F# or F. So to go from A to F# is 3 semitones and A to F 4 swmitones. So yeah that is totally do-able if you have the Drop at your disposal.
@@GaryHiebner I went out of my way to get the drop pedal just so I wouldn't have to get a super thick string (~80 gauge) and I manage quite well with the 52 I usually use, of course a 60 would probably sound better but oh well ;)
They cool pedals. What tuning do you have your guitar in and what tuningsvRe you wanting to tune down to with the pedal? I've found the least amount of semitones it needs to pitch down thr better. And Lso if you tune your guitar down more it can generally pitch down less as well. I did some testing with the pedal. And you find the limits that you can do with the pedal and the guitar you're using
@@GaryHiebner personally if I'm playing anything higher than C standard/drop B I'll keep it in E standard/Drop D. Anything lower than that and I drop it it D standard/Drop C as that seems to be the limits of my strings and anything lower starts to sound very bad. I don't have many physical pedals since I rely on emulation of pedals like what Rocksmith provides for most of what I do, but the drop pedal is definitely a fun one and I'm quite satisfied with what I got for the cost. Though, I'm not sure yet how to tune my guitar to play something generally lower, like Whitechapel or other deathcore bands, without cashing out and just buying a 7 string
Nice vid! I think Sikth uses a similar tuning, just a bit higher. I need to order some strings and try this, could inspire some different playing and riffs. I'm thinking I may get Overloud. Seems like a nice product for the price.

From what I researched they do use this tuning. They tune to C# standard and then use a couple of drop tunings. They drop the C# to A#, G, and F. They use the Ernie Ball Not So Even set and then switch out the 6th string for an 80 to accommodate all these tunings. They mentioned this on a Reddit AMA thread. They then use a Digitech Whammy Pedal to do all the high pitching effects in the songs.

Are you trying this tuning on a 7 string? So are you still gonna do an octave jump between the lowest strings? I'd say on a 27 inch you could maybe get away with a 72 on the bottom to go down to F. But I still like using an 80 for F even on my 28 inch 7 string.
I'm currently using a Cort KX500MS with an 8 string set, 9-74 and it's perfect for drop F. I did find intonation issues but i took advantage of that and completely took the bridge apart for cleaning etc. After a set up, it's holding tune perfectly and the string tension is spot on for my liking. 27-25.5" scale length for future reference.

There may be a difference between the Slate version and the Overloud version. But any good Hi Gain amp head will do the trick. Maybe use a Peavey 5150 amp head emulation and a Mesa 4 x 12 cab emulation
Great video, however I have a schecter with a floyd rose setup so i think i'm gonna take it down to the music shop down the road and let them work on it. I don't think I could set it up properly and drop that low without screwing it up. Good stuff!

No, you will need to get a new nut if you wanna go back to a higher tuning, so it is quite a big mod. But I replaced the nut afterwards and it wasn't too bad. I just had to knock the nut out. And then with the new nut I just applied a bit of wood glue and then set it in place. Took about 20 minutes to do, and then set overnight.
@@GaryHiebner thanks man, I know that wage war and architects have the bass an octave lower than the guitars like normal, wonder what gauge string they use and how Chris Gaylord from wage war gets that clanky bass tone when that low listen to gravity by wage war, there's a part in the song where you can hear his bass really well!
Gabe the bassist I found this on the Ernie Ball site on what he uses for his bass: Bassist, Chris Gaylord, plays a Music Man StingRay four string bass with Power Slinky Strings and a .135 individual. So yeah he must be doing to same tuning on bass but an octave lower.
@@GaryHiebner Ali (Architects) does the same. Extra Long Scale Length though is more than necessary especially for bass, just like Architects do themselves.
Yeah with a longer scale like a Baritone you can do this tuning with a lighter set of strings. I’ve also tried it out on my 28-Inch Baritone. I used the Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky’s and swapped the 62 out for a 72 and it works well

Eric and Emily somers awesome glad you enjoyed the Northlane video. Yeah the Mammoth set is a bit more balanced. So it’s even nice for low tunings on a standard scale like Drop A on a standard scale. They 12-62. So yeah on my Baritone I used that set and then replaced the 62 with a 72 for the octave style tunings. Works for for it in F# and F.
You might need to do a slight trussrod adjustment. After putting on the strings and tuninf them up. Then check your trussrod and see if its straight or not. I found I didn't need to, but you might because of the extra tension of that heavy gauge 6th string.
This was very interesting as my main guitar I have in C# standard for the past few years now, although it is currently unplayable as it needs a major setup. It is an 80's BC Rich Mockingbird. If I buy another 25.5 or 25 scale guitar which I probably will sometime this year, I will definitely try this out! Although I would likely not tune this low, perhaps Double Drop A, or Double Drop G. I refer to this tuning as "double drop 2" because the more well know double drop tuning involves the 1st/6th strings both tuned down. Anyways, I definitely want to investigate this further for a Djent / Black Metal / Death Metal / Heavy Metal / Jazz hybrid project!
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah its a fun tuning, you definitely write differently using it. Im going to do another video of a similar tuning, Alt Drop G. So its the exact same thing but with the F tuned up on the 6th string to G. So stay tuned for that. I like going low on a shorter scale with drastic tunings like this with big interval jumps between the strings, and the chord voicing you can do. What 25.5 scale guitar you gonna buy?

Hi Chris, yeah this would definitely work out way better on a longer scale. You could use a less heavier gauge on the 6th strings, and obviously have way better intonation. I'd say a 27-inch to 28-inch would be perfect for this tuning. But for this video I wanted to demonstrate how you can do it on a standard scale 25.5-inch guitars as Josh from Architects, and both the guitarists from Wage War are using standard scale guitars. So it was to show other players with not longer scale guitars how they can still mess with this tuning. But yeah with a longer scale like a baritone this tuning is awesome. I have also tried it out on my Ibanez MMM1 with a 28-inch scale, and used slightly lighter gauge strings, with a 74 on the 6th string, and it feels great.
Are you fitting an 80 through those string posts? And also do the guitarists from Architects use baritone guitars? I am interested in playing in lower tunings, but I'm not willing to file the nut on any of my current guitars to do this. I'd just buy another six string and make it dedicated. If they use baritone to accomplish this I would much rather just start with that.
The 80 in the Ernie Ball set tapers, so yes it does fit through the machine heads. Adam uses a 27 inch Baritone, but Josh uses a 25.5 ESP. You can definitely do it easier on a baritone and even maybe only need a 72 instead of an 80. But this video was to show how you can do it on a 25.5. For example both the Wage War guys uses 25.5 scale length and drop down to F and don't use baritone. But personally I prefer doing this tuning on a 27 inch or longer.

But seriously this video is tremendously helpful. i've been going crazy with finding a way to get that tuning into a 6 string since i don't want to go to the extended range guitars, because im not really a guitarist, i started playing bc of Tom and Architects, and now i already have two guitars(one in standard and one in drop B), and im like no im not getting another one. This just seems to do the trick. Basically everything that i listen to and want to learn is under drop A(silent planet, currents, make them suffer,etc) and nothing else really motivates me to play guitar. I am so excited that i might get to those earlier than i expected(obv i still suck at playing but at least i get to disect the riffs).. Thanks so much again for putting this out !
You got two options. You can unwind a bit of the end so it fits into the tuner. Or you can use a hand drill and a small bit and drill the tuber hole bigger. Sounds pretty scary, but heard its pretty easy to do. Havent needed to do that myself but yeah those are two options.
Just wondering if you've tried out the tuning: G F Bb Eb G C ? (Wage war's tuning from the song "The River") I want to know how it would effect barred power chords - Is the same as F-F-A#-D#-G-C but with the Lowest string tuned 1 step up from F?
infinitepotato it’s a great guitar. I think the new models have a slightly thinner neck. 13-62 will work. I used the Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky set on this guitar for Drop A#. And just swapped out the 62 for a 72 just for some extra tension on the 6th string. I like it a bit tighter on the 6th string :)
Definitely will. I use 12-56 and 11-54 and 11-54 isnt too floppy. A# and C standard are what I primarily use on the 11-54 (mainly because I can just drop the down to A# without a problem) and it still sounds good.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah there are many audio interface options ranging through different price ranges. First thing you gotta ask your self is what is your budget. And then next how many inputs you gonna need. The more inputs you got for after 2 inputs also jumps up the price. But if you only gong to be recording your guitar then a simple 2 input audio interface will do the job. Take a look at the Behringer U-Phoria line. I got one, and it works really well and the preamps are decent. A jump up from this would be the Focusrite Scarlett range. Which have really good preamps. Good luck and have fun audio interface shopping :)

Can be done the same on a baritone. You will just need lighter gauge strings cos of the longer scale. Use a string tension calculator to help you figure out the best tension.
what i do is buy a regular slinky ernie ball 7 string set and just get rid of the 6th string. just tune to standard and the low string to A or B depending on what ur playing and use a pitch shifter down 3-4 semitones
I use an 8-string set and get rid of the 1st and 7th strings. I prefer an 80 on the bottom for F# and F on a 25.5 scale. And many 7 strings sets only have like a 56-64 on the 7th string. But guess a 7 string set could work and you can pitch it down with an effect. Just check how many artifacts are introduced with the pitch effects

@@GaryHiebner I never had to replace the nut for my guitar. I used a squire stratocaster and was using B standard on it. Had to file almost all of the nut slots but then I got a baritone eventually so it became redundant. When I got the baritone, I tuned my strat to E standard with the same nut, and I've been having no problems since.
On a 7 string you could do the same tuning and then have an extra high stringbin the same tuning. Hope that makes sense. What really makes this tuning work is the octvae jumping between the 6th and 5th string.
So on a 7 string you could just tune it to Drop F# or Drop F and skip playing the 6th string. Just depends if you want that octave jump between the 7th and 6th strings
You could just use Drop F on your 7 string (F#-C#-F#-B-E-G#-C#. And then do string skipping or mute the low C when doing chords. or you could still use the same tuning and have a really high 1st string (F#-F#-B-E-G#-C#-F#). You’d just need to check what string gauges you need for this tuning on your 7. Maybe starting with a .008 on the bottom
Yeah that’s the only difference. Think of their tuning as Drop B and then you take the low B and drop it to G# for some of their stuff and then to F# for some of the other lower stuff. If you have an 80 on the bottom you can use this to tune to F#, G# and al the way up to B. It gets a bit tight at B but still doable. 😀
Hey, great video, helped me a lot! For a long time I was afraid I would have to buy a 7 or 8 string to play my favorite band, architects. I don't know if this was asked, but can you still play standard e tuning on this setup or play normal songs as well without changing your strings again? Cheers!
Two options. Either have a spare guitar set up in this tuning. I know this isn't always possible. Or instead set the guitar up in E standard with a normal string set. Like 10-48. And the replace the 6th string with like a 64. And tune that down to A. Then ut will be the octave tuning but in A not F#. And then use a pitch shifting effect like the Drop to drop it down by 3 semitones. Hope that helps. Theres not a one solution that fits all unfortunately.

So it would only be a question of spending money on the pedal or on the guitar. Haha, always a good reason to get more guitars. I got 6 guitars all in different tunings. I could make my life simpler and have them in similiar tunings. But its fun using different tunings.
Yeah you can still play leads. The best way to think of the tuning is like Drop B with the low B tuned down to F# (or as with Wage War Drop A# with the low A# tuned down to F). So you can still play leads as if you were in Drop B
I also have another question. Wich guitar would you recommend to get for this? I have an epiphone les paul shape but its only 24,5 scale. I hear that 25.5 should do it?
Floating Trem like a Strat trem or a Floyd Rose? I haven't used a tree bridges in ages. But Im guessing it would be fine. If you using a floating bridge with nut locks, then you don't even need to file the nut.
Yes, Wage War also tune to Drop A#. They use a couple of different tunings. They use Drop A# for songs like Gravity and Hurt. Then they use this alternate Drop F tuning for songs like Low and Who I am. And in essence the tuning is really Drop A#, and then the bottom 6th strings is dropped from A# down to F. They also use an alternate Drop G tuning for songs like The Witness, which is also a Drop A# tuning and the 6th string is dropped to G. But I really like their alternate Drop F tuning. Its an interesting tuning with the octave interval difference between the 6th and 5th strings. Definitely makes you write in a different way when using this tuning. So definitely try it out, it's a lot of fun :)

Jose A Diaz Perez what guitar is it? Yeah you can still get a heavy gauge on there, maybe all the way up to an 80. It’s just the shorter the scale length the more the guitar will not intonate the lower you go. So I’d say go for a 72 or even an 80. The. Start tuning that 6th string down a step at a time. And after each tune down check the intonation. So check that it isn’t going sharp at the 12th fret. If it is pull the saddle back until it’s in key when played both open and at the 12th fret. Keep doing this until the saddle can’t go back anymore to fix the sharpness when played higher up. Then you know what your lowest note can be and you can decide what the rest of the strings are gonna be tuning wise and gauge size.
Yeah exactly. Sounds limiting. But you write riffs in a different way when using this tuning. Also when you tune this low you generally use single notes over chords

This is pretty cool. In a pinch. You are robbing yourself of the extended range, though. Personally, if you really want to play Metalcore and Deatrhcore and even make your own riffs, I would just buy an extended range guitar. The entry-level ones aren't actually super expensive.
That is true. But wanted to give some advice to off the shelf strings you can get to do the tuning in case it’s a mission to order Stringjoy custom sets. But d finitely getting some custom Stringjoy is a great way to go. So with this tuning the big thing to remember is the thicker gauge on the 6th string to get the right tension.
constructive criticism, you are playing the main Doomsday riff incorrectly..... theres a ton of pulloffs. your first two notes, 0 and 10 are played on the low thick F#, but everything else in that part is played on the 5th string (the higher F#). listen to the song really close and even watch a lot of their live performances, youll see what i mean. great vid though!

@@jazz5638 It is really just preference. I have played 7 and 8 strings and actually own a 7 but I much prefer a 6 string. It is more comfortable and familiar. I don't need nor can I use all of the range a 7 and 8 string offer. In a nutshell: preference.
@@guitarfreak2105 not really, if you check your intonation on the 12 and 24 fret with this tuning, I bet it will not be in tune. Just check up yourself with a tuner
@@jazz5638 I used to use B standard on my 25.5 squire stratocaster and it worked. Strings were 16-70 and the lowest string was intonated, albeit the saddle was maxed out on the 6th string.

Thank you, because of this video I was able to make the string changes to my cheap Squier Stratocaster.
The only thing issue I ran into was the low F# string was causing pull on the temolo bridge raising it up, so what I did was tighten the tremolo springs and block the bridge with some coins lol.
But again thank you for this vid it was very informative and helped a lot, now I can play my favourite Architects songs👍

Have you looked at you neck setup? It could be creating unnecessary tension on your bridge? Sometime just a slight adjustment can make a huge difference.

Also. If you have a guitar with a floyd is makes it really easy. The nut and clamp on a floyd makes it super easy. You can block it if you want it to be a hardtail or just use the floyd floating (like I do)

I remember the first band I personally remember doing this was Sevendust back in '99 on the song Home (same tuning but in G#). Always thought it was so cool. I have one of my guitars in a similar tuning.

Earlier Architects used low G#. You can think of the tuning as a 7 string in G# standard without the 6th string. With F# it's a Drop F# 7 string without the 6th. This helped me comprehend the tuning a bit more.
Yeah that’s true on earlier albums they had the G# tuning. Which is pretty easy to do. Use the same gauge strings just tune that 6th string up a step. And yeah that’s a good way at looking at the tubingZ it’s like a low tuned 7-string but missing the 6th string.

Yeah, you can definitely do this tuning style on a baritone. Just need to adjust the string gauges. What is the scale length of your Baritone? For example if its a 27-inch, then maybe rather use a 72 on the 6th string, and then it can jump down to a 42 or so for the 5th string and so on. So just take the gauges down slightly. You'll probably have to experiment with a few gauges to see what feels right but totally do-able. For example in this video of mine, I do the same tuning on my 30-inch scale baritone, but instead have tuned it down to D1: th-cam.com/video/XRLD8JJUw2o/w-d-xo.html

Yeah I heard they use this tuning as well. Its a fun tuning to use. I find I write different when I use it. You get that string skipping vibe without having to skip a string.

I think I-ve heard that Wage War guitarists actually tune to Drop A# and for the Drop F songs they use a pitch pedal (digitech drop pedal).
I-ve tried the same with the Pitch pedal that comes with my line 6 helix but it only stands good for one semitone low. That-s why many line 6 helix users buy a digitech drop pedal for that purpose.

Thanks glad you enjoyed the video. And yeah they don’t use a Drop effect but instead have a thick gauge .80 on the 6th string to tune down to F. But they also tune this string up to G and A#. I’ve read they use the Ernie Ball Bot Even Slinky set and the switch the .56 out for an .80 but I found this Ernie Ball 8-string Top Heavy art came close without having to buy the Not Even Slinky set and then a separate .80. They do use a Digitech Whammy pedal for pitching up and pitching down effects but not that I’m aware of for drop tuning a whole guitar. But definitely try this octave style tuning out. It’s really fun to use. Pretty much like an 8-string but missing the 7th string and 1st string.
Do you know the name of this tuning? For what I see is like Dropping again the 6th string till the fifth. It could be named something like 5th Drop A# (?

Great video! For me I have been using the Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky set and it works great! Going down to F# things get a bit floppy as they only go up to 62 gauge, but one can always use this style tuning but tune up a few steps, say Ab or something and get the same effect (just in a slightly higher key)
I mean, Most of Lost Forever/Lost Together is actually in Drop Ab, aswell as several other songs fron them like These Colours Don't Run
Doing the same with a 30 scale guitar. Tuned the guitar to E1 Standard, then lowered E1 to A0. Sounds cool, but I honestly do not know what to do with it. I feel like a string is missing 😅
Yeah I did a similar thing with my Jazzmaster Baritone 30 inch. Did the Octave tuning with B0. Actually wrote a whole song with it. So keep messing around. Some ideas will come out of it.
You can omit the saddle spring, and/or cut the back half of the low strings saddle also to get it to somewhat intonate.
Yeah i did that. I removed the spring saddle to push it back more. That seemed to do the job.

To make sure the string fits snug in the nut slot and not sitting above the slot.

Yes it must sit flush on the bottom and be wide enough to accommodate the thicker string. Don't file it down any deeper, just wider. If you file it too wide, the string will buzz at the nut. So its basically the nut slot width you want to get right

Yes, you can do it with the same set if strings. Just tune the F# up to G#. It will be a bit tighter but still playable.

Sevendust use a similar tuning except they're in G instead of F#. It's like a combo of that Architects tuning and DADGAD tuning and it's really fun to play in. From low to high it's G G C F G C.

@@GaryHiebner They started using it on the Kill The Flaw album. Songs like Death Dance, Not Today and Silly Beast are all in that G tuning. They use it up in G# as well for songs like Chop and Unforgiven.
Oh cool. I knew they used some Baritones and tuned down to G. But didn't know they used the same tunings as the Architects but just a step down. Gonna explore this more. Its such a fun tuning to use.

Their tuning is basically a full step down (almost like Drop C like Deftones White Pony album) whereas Architects are playing a step and a half lower than standard (which is commonly used for drop B). They both sound awesome!

I’m using TH-U mainly to get the guitar tone. But you can get a similar tone with most guitar modeling software. Use a 5150/6505 amp head emulation model with the lead channel. With this going to an Orange 4 x 12 speaker cabinet with an SM7 mic off axis. And then a tube screamer in front of the amp to focus the sound. And then follow the same EQ and compression settings with the EQs and compressors you have.

Not fit through the bridge or the ferrules? Sometimes you can unwind by the ball end so it fits through
Alternatively, if you have money to spend you can get a digitech drop pedal and then you only really have to do e minor and b minor (I think, I can't remember what I tuned my guitar to for it tbh) for the low e. You'll still need a thicker gage to make b minor sound good but you'll be fine.
The fun in this tuning is the octave jump between the 6th and 5th string. So yeah if you didn't want super thick strongs and had a Digitect drop. You could keep your guitar in E standard and then justbtuned to E down to an A. Will still need a tixker string. Like maybe a 60. And then you can use the drop to get it from A down to F# or F. So to go from A to F# is 3 semitones and A to F 4 swmitones. So yeah that is totally do-able if you have the Drop at your disposal.
@@GaryHiebner I went out of my way to get the drop pedal just so I wouldn't have to get a super thick string (~80 gauge) and I manage quite well with the 52 I usually use, of course a 60 would probably sound better but oh well ;)
They cool pedals. What tuning do you have your guitar in and what tuningsvRe you wanting to tune down to with the pedal? I've found the least amount of semitones it needs to pitch down thr better. And Lso if you tune your guitar down more it can generally pitch down less as well. I did some testing with the pedal. And you find the limits that you can do with the pedal and the guitar you're using
@@GaryHiebner personally if I'm playing anything higher than C standard/drop B I'll keep it in E standard/Drop D. Anything lower than that and I drop it it D standard/Drop C as that seems to be the limits of my strings and anything lower starts to sound very bad.
I don't have many physical pedals since I rely on emulation of pedals like what Rocksmith provides for most of what I do, but the drop pedal is definitely a fun one and I'm quite satisfied with what I got for the cost.
Though, I'm not sure yet how to tune my guitar to play something generally lower, like Whitechapel or other deathcore bands, without cashing out and just buying a 7 string

Wage War are using just a dropped D Tuning. The Downtuning to F# is done by an effect pedal (drop).
From what I researched they do use this tuning. They tune to C# standard and then use a couple of drop tunings. They drop the C# to A#, G, and F. They use the Ernie Ball Not So Even set and then switch out the 6th string for an 80 to accommodate all these tunings. They mentioned this on a Reddit AMA thread. They then use a Digitech Whammy Pedal to do all the high pitching effects in the songs.

What would you choose for a 7 string multiscale. 7 string 27" to 25.5"
Are you trying this tuning on a 7 string? So are you still gonna do an octave jump between the lowest strings? I'd say on a 27 inch you could maybe get away with a 72 on the bottom to go down to F. But I still like using an 80 for F even on my 28 inch 7 string.
I'm currently using a Cort KX500MS with an 8 string set, 9-74 and it's perfect for drop F. I did find intonation issues but i took advantage of that and completely took the bridge apart for cleaning etc. After a set up, it's holding tune perfectly and the string tension is spot on for my liking. 27-25.5" scale length for future reference.

There may be a difference between the Slate version and the Overloud version. But any good Hi Gain amp head will do the trick. Maybe use a Peavey 5150 amp head emulation and a Mesa 4 x 12 cab emulation
Great video, however I have a schecter with a floyd rose setup so i think i'm gonna take it down to the music shop down the road and let them work on it. I don't think I could set it up properly and drop that low without screwing it up. Good stuff!

No, you will need to get a new nut if you wanna go back to a higher tuning, so it is quite a big mod. But I replaced the nut afterwards and it wasn't too bad. I just had to knock the nut out. And then with the new nut I just applied a bit of wood glue and then set it in place. Took about 20 minutes to do, and then set overnight.

Gabe the bassist I found this on the Ernie Ball site on what he uses for his bass: Bassist, Chris Gaylord, plays a Music Man StingRay four string bass with Power Slinky Strings and a .135 individual. So yeah he must be doing to same tuning on bass but an octave lower.

Yeah with a longer scale like a Baritone you can do this tuning with a lighter set of strings. I’ve also tried it out on my 28-Inch Baritone. I used the Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky’s and swapped the 62 out for a 72 and it works well

Eric and Emily somers awesome glad you enjoyed the Northlane video. Yeah the Mammoth set is a bit more balanced. So it’s even nice for low tunings on a standard scale like Drop A on a standard scale. They 12-62. So yeah on my Baritone I used that set and then replaced the 62 with a 72 for the octave style tunings. Works for for it in F# and F.
Do you need to adjust the truss rod when you do this as well?
You might need to do a slight trussrod adjustment. After putting on the strings and tuninf them up. Then check your trussrod and see if its straight or not. I found I didn't need to, but you might because of the extra tension of that heavy gauge 6th string.

Is it possible on a Floyd Rose guitar as long as it is blocked?
This was very interesting as my main guitar I have in C# standard for the past few years now, although it is currently unplayable as it needs a major setup. It is an 80's BC Rich Mockingbird. If I buy another 25.5 or 25 scale guitar which I probably will sometime this year, I will definitely try this out! Although I would likely not tune this low, perhaps Double Drop A, or Double Drop G. I refer to this tuning as "double drop 2" because the more well know double drop tuning involves the 1st/6th strings both tuned down. Anyways, I definitely want to investigate this further for a Djent / Black Metal / Death Metal / Heavy Metal / Jazz hybrid project!

So its the exact same thing but with the F tuned up on the 6th string to G. So stay tuned for that. I like going low on a shorter scale with drastic tunings like this with big interval jumps between the strings, and the chord voicing you can do. What 25.5 scale guitar you gonna buy?

Hi Chris, yeah this would definitely work out way better on a longer scale. You could use a less heavier gauge on the 6th strings, and obviously have way better intonation. I'd say a 27-inch to 28-inch would be perfect for this tuning. But for this video I wanted to demonstrate how you can do it on a standard scale 25.5-inch guitars as Josh from Architects, and both the guitarists from Wage War are using standard scale guitars. So it was to show other players with not longer scale guitars how they can still mess with this tuning. But yeah with a longer scale like a baritone this tuning is awesome. I have also tried it out on my Ibanez MMM1 with a 28-inch scale, and used slightly lighter gauge strings, with a 74 on the 6th string, and it feels great.

I am interested in playing in lower tunings, but I'm not willing to file the nut on any of my current guitars to do this.
I'd just buy another six string and make it dedicated. If they use baritone to accomplish this I would much rather just start with that.
The 80 in the Ernie Ball set tapers, so yes it does fit through the machine heads. Adam uses a 27 inch Baritone, but Josh uses a 25.5 ESP. You can definitely do it easier on a baritone and even maybe only need a 72 instead of an 80. But this video was to show how you can do it on a 25.5. For example both the Wage War guys uses 25.5 scale length and drop down to F and don't use baritone. But personally I prefer doing this tuning on a 27 inch or longer.

I didn't. The .80 tapered and this fitted through my tuning peg fine.

But seriously this video is tremendously helpful. i've been going crazy with finding a way to get that tuning into a 6 string since i don't want to go to the extended range guitars, because im not really a guitarist, i started playing bc of Tom and Architects, and now i already have two guitars(one in standard and one in drop B), and im like no im not getting another one. This just seems to do the trick. Basically everything that i listen to and want to learn is under drop A(silent planet, currents, make them suffer,etc) and nothing else really motivates me to play guitar. I am so excited that i might get to those earlier than i expected(obv i still suck at playing but at least i get to disect the riffs).. Thanks so much again for putting this out !

You could try something like this 85,40, 28, 20w, 15, 11. Thats sort of like a custom balanced set for a 30 inch in the Alt Drop F.
Or switch the 85 out for an 80 if you want it a bit looser

Hey. I have some issues where I can't get the gauge 80 string into my tuning machine. The hole is just too small. What should I do?
You got two options. You can unwind a bit of the end so it fits into the tuner. Or you can use a hand drill and a small bit and drill the tuber hole bigger. Sounds pretty scary, but heard its pretty easy to do. Havent needed to do that myself but yeah those are two options.
Tomorrow I'll setup my 26.5'' scale guitar in order to try the G#-F#-B-E-G#-C# tuning heheh

infinitepotato it’s a great guitar. I think the new models have a slightly thinner neck. 13-62 will work. I used the Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky set on this guitar for Drop A#. And just swapped out the 62 for a 72 just for some extra tension on the 6th string. I like it a bit tighter on the 6th string :)
Definitely will. I use 12-56 and 11-54 and 11-54 isnt too floppy. A# and C standard are what I primarily use on the 11-54 (mainly because I can just drop the down to A# without a problem) and it still sounds good.
Hey buddy I appreciate this video. I’ve always had the traditional guitar/little 40 modeling amp set up haha I want to try this. I’m going to get TH-U Overloud and the Ernie Ball strings. I’ve tried my research any suggestions on a interface or sound card. What’s the best way to connect to PC and even use TH-U? Lol thanks again!
Thanks for the comment. Yeah there are many audio interface options ranging through different price ranges. First thing you gotta ask your self is what is your budget. And then next how many inputs you gonna need. The more inputs you got for after 2 inputs also jumps up the price. But if you only gong to be recording your guitar then a simple 2 input audio interface will do the job. Take a look at the Behringer U-Phoria line. I got one, and it works really well and the preamps are decent. A jump up from this would be the Focusrite Scarlett range. Which have really good preamps. Good luck and have fun audio interface shopping :)

You are using vintage tuners on that tele deluxe tho right? The 80 gauge doesn’t fit through locking tuners, that’s why he’s asking.

Can be done the same on a baritone. You will just need lighter gauge strings cos of the longer scale. Use a string tension calculator to help you figure out the best tension.

what i do is buy a regular slinky ernie ball 7 string set and just get rid of the 6th string. just tune to standard and the low string to A or B depending on what ur playing and use a pitch shifter down 3-4 semitones

I use an 8-string set and get rid of the 1st and 7th strings. I prefer an 80 on the bottom for F# and F on a 25.5 scale. And many 7 strings sets only have like a 56-64 on the 7th string. But guess a 7 string set could work and you can pitch it down with an effect. Just check how many artifacts are introduced with the pitch effects

What about tuning pegs?
Tuning pegs were fine on my side. The 80 gauge tapered near the end and fitted fine through the tuning pegs.
How hard was the F# to intonate? I have a 7 string jackson thats 26.5 that just won't intonate I'm not sure if its my fault or not haha
It was almost intonated perfectly. If I hit the string too hard the F# would go sharp. So it worked with some subtle picking technique.
If you vile down the nut. Are u able to go back to normal strings or is the nut 'set up' for only that heavy string on the 6th
I have filed down the nut. And have actually gone back to standard strings after this video. Yes, I had to replace the nut to go back but wasn’t too hard to do.
@@GaryHiebner I never had to replace the nut for my guitar. I used a squire stratocaster and was using B standard on it. Had to file almost all of the nut slots but then I got a baritone eventually so it became redundant. When I got the baritone, I tuned my strat to E standard with the same nut, and I've been having no problems since.
What would this tuning behind on a 7 string
On a 7 string you could do the same tuning and then have an extra high stringbin the same tuning. Hope that makes sense. What really makes this tuning work is the octvae jumping between the 6th and 5th string.
So on a 7 string you could just tune it to Drop F# or Drop F and skip playing the 6th string. Just depends if you want that octave jump between the 7th and 6th strings

You could just use Drop F on your 7 string (F#-C#-F#-B-E-G#-C#. And then do string skipping or mute the low C when doing chords. or you could still use the same tuning and have a really high 1st string (F#-F#-B-E-G#-C#-F#). You’d just need to check what string gauges you need for this tuning on your 7. Maybe starting with a .008 on the bottom

Yeah that’s the only difference. Think of their tuning as Drop B and then you take the low B and drop it to G# for some of their stuff and then to F# for some of the other lower stuff. If you have an 80 on the bottom you can use this to tune to F#, G# and al the way up to B. It gets a bit tight at B but still doable. 😀

No the strings are too heavy to tune up E standard. Ive tuned the 80 up to A# so I then have a Drop A#.but higher then that is pushing it

Two options. Either have a spare guitar set up in this tuning. I know this isn't always possible. Or instead set the guitar up in E standard with a normal string set. Like 10-48. And the replace the 6th string with like a 64. And tune that down to A. Then ut will be the octave tuning but in A not F#. And then use a pitch shifting effect like the Drop to drop it down by 3 semitones. Hope that helps. Theres not a one solution that fits all unfortunately.

So it would only be a question of spending money on the pedal or on the guitar. Since I'm starting to learn now, I'd just get a cheap guitar, since I don't need a super expensive one and damn it's cool to have multiple guitars 😂

Haha, always a good reason to get more guitars. I got 6 guitars all in different tunings. I could make my life simpler and have them in similiar tunings. But its fun using different tunings.

Yeah you can still play leads. The best way to think of the tuning is like Drop B with the low B tuned down to F# (or as with Wage War Drop A# with the low A# tuned down to F). So you can still play leads as if you were in Drop B
I also have another question. Wich guitar would you recommend to get for this? I have an epiphone les paul shape but its only 24,5 scale. I hear that 25.5 should do it?
A 25,5 will be slightly better from an intonation point of view than the 24,5.

Floating Trem like a Strat trem or a Floyd Rose? I haven't used a tree bridges in ages. But Im guessing it would be fine. If you using a floating bridge with nut locks, then you don't even need to file the nut.

Yes, Wage War also tune to Drop A#. They use a couple of different tunings. They use Drop A# for songs like Gravity and Hurt. Then they use this alternate Drop F tuning for songs like Low and Who I am. And in essence the tuning is really Drop A#, and then the bottom 6th strings is dropped from A# down to F. They also use an alternate Drop G tuning for songs like The Witness, which is also a Drop A# tuning and the 6th string is dropped to G. But I really like their alternate Drop F tuning. Its an interesting tuning with the octave interval difference between the 6th and 5th strings. Definitely makes you write in a different way when using this tuning. So definitely try it out, it's a lot of fun :)

I don’t think so. That’s pretty short. I’m using a 25.5 inch here. Maybe you could get down to A with a 22-inch.

Jose A Diaz Perez what guitar is it? Yeah you can still get a heavy gauge on there, maybe all the way up to an 80. It’s just the shorter the scale length the more the guitar will not intonate the lower you go. So I’d say go for a 72 or even an 80. The. Start tuning that 6th string down a step at a time. And after each tune down check the intonation. So check that it isn’t going sharp at the 12th fret. If it is pull the saddle back until it’s in key when played both open and at the 12th fret. Keep doing this until the saddle can’t go back anymore to fix the sharpness when played higher up. Then you know what your lowest note can be and you can decide what the rest of the strings are gonna be tuning wise and gauge size.

Yeah exactly. Sounds limiting. But you write riffs in a different way when using this tuning. Also when you tune this low you generally use single notes over chords

This is pretty cool. In a pinch. You are robbing yourself of the extended range, though. Personally, if you really want to play Metalcore and Deatrhcore and even make your own riffs, I would just buy an extended range guitar. The entry-level ones aren't actually super expensive.

That is true. But wanted to give some advice to off the shelf strings you can get to do the tuning in case it’s a mission to order Stringjoy custom sets. But d finitely getting some custom Stringjoy is a great way to go. So with this tuning the big thing to remember is the thicker gauge on the 6th string to get the right tension.

constructive criticism, you are playing the main Doomsday riff incorrectly..... theres a ton of pulloffs. your first two notes, 0 and 10 are played on the low thick F#, but everything else in that part is played on the 5th string (the higher F#). listen to the song really close and even watch a lot of their live performances, youll see what i mean. great vid though!
Thanks for the advice. Will revise the riff and check it out. Yeah the video was more about how they do this low tuning on standard scale guitars, and getting close to the tone. I love the octave jumps between the 6th and 5th string. That's what I really find fun about the tuning.

Yeah it can definitely be done on a baritone. The extra scale length helps a lot. But Wage War and Josh from Architects don't use baritones. They use standard scale guitars, so wanted to demonstrate how they do it with standard scale guitars and this low tuning.

@@jazz5638 I used to use B standard on my 25.5 squire stratocaster and it worked. Strings were 16-70 and the lowest string was intonated, albeit the saddle was maxed out on the 6th string.
So better do this shit with floyd rose equipped guitats so you wont have to fuck arround with filing the nut...
