Heartened to see all the comments stating that this is the Mastodon tuning. Went to a Mark Holcomb clinic many years ago, someone asked him about when he first used this tuning, and he played March of the Fire Ants as an example. If you haven’t delved into Mastodon, do so! Best band
Surprised people are just finding this 6 string tuning variant - Architects and I think even Mastodon have utilized it a ton!
Doesnt Tremonti do the same? I think his low string may be a b flat though
@@metalpuppet5798 Yeah, some AB and Tremonti songs are like that
Funny, to me this is the MASTODON tuning 😂.
Sounds good regardless man! Use this tuning a LOT! 👏
Architects for me.
Lmao mastodon been using this tuning for 25+ years. I'm also pretty sure mastodon is a huge influence for Misha but he's too afraid of the flak he'll get if he admits that because for some reason a lot of the metal community hates mastodon for some reason.
It's still the Mastodon tuning to me, damn it!
@@alexbrown4426 people who hate Mastodon are chuds. I get if you don’t like them.. but HATE them? Cmon… some of the nicest dudes in metal are in that band. Very influential and incredibly talented band too.
It can be the mastodon tuning but if he learned from periphery then. That’s what he can call it, I’ve never heard one song from them but I know periphery songs lol
Periphery's got some great 6 string tunings! They started using GGCFAD (so just 1 step down on the low E to make it an octave) on Reptile & Zagreus, open C add9 for Scarlet is CGCEGD, and then Wax Wings is in D F# A E A C#!
This gotta be a full song!
I'm loving these series! Awesome work!
Loving this series!
I look forward to watching these every week! Keep them coming :D
I'm such a fan of everything you do & genuinely look forward to your weekly videos!
Keep the sweet riffs coming! Much love
woah i've finally found a great djenty channel for my inspiration. thanks a lot for doing this, man
Been watching thick riff Thursday for last few weeks after stumbling upon the channel, thoroughly enjoying it but then you mention Periphery and DMM in the same vid. just upped the levels of for me. My two faves, DMM open tuning has fascinated me for years and I'm not guitar player on the slightest. Highly underrated you are and stoked for what the future brings you if you stick with this.
My Thursday just got 100% thicker. Thank you for this.
Thick Riff Thursday became my religion of thursday, never miss a episode, this is soo good and chilling!
really appreciate your recording process and showing that not everything has to be "ONE PERFECT TAKE" lol. also it's rly cool that you use the drum pad to record the drums! keep riffin bro
David Maxim is so underrated, glad you appreciate him as much as I do.
Soundgarden uses BADGBE on a few songs.
Man this is awesome! 💪
I love this. Got some Bleed From Within vibes 🤘
Randomly suggested this video but actually real interesting, can’t wait to be picking these kinda things up myself in time
It's been 2/3 years I'm trying this cool tuning, it definitely gives different cool riffs and gives you a whole new approach to writing riffs.. keep trying and post your ideas. Will be waiting ✌🏻👍🏻
You are turning into one of my favorite guitar TH-camrs. This series is so fun!
He's tuning into one of your favorite guitar TH-camrs.
Get it? Tuning? LOL
great job dude! your video inspired me so much on producing music. Btw, will you make an episode about your equipments? I'm so curious about it!
THIS WAS FIRE 🔥
Dude you make this look so easy lol I love it allot
great riff!
I've got to try this tuning. I'm inspired by the "doom metal" sound but I really was always into Type - O - Negative. I feel like some of that would lend itself in there too. 🤘😎🤘
To me this is the Mastodon tuning. I think they were the first popular band that did it a lot. As early as 2001
Don't quote me on this but I believe pentagram did this back in the day
@@jamesvillarrealjr5325 interesting. Never listened to them
The album Home by Sevendust came out in 99!
Well... Following up on your video from two weeks ago, even though you said it is not, my brain has decided that acoustic guitar has True Temperament frets and cannot unsee, but I digress...
I do not know if you are familiar with them but a band that was/is highly influential to Periphery is the band SikTh, who makes interesting use of non-standard tuning (predominantly G# - G# - C# - F# - A# - D#). Pin and Dan, the two guitarists, are wizards and play off each other rhythmically in creative ways, often based off of drum patterns such as paradiddles for example. While their music isn't for everyone, I find there are many interesting ideas to take away from their music.
Thanks for this series, it's always fun and interesting to witness one's approach to creating music.
You got some serious Monuments vibes on this one
I love how you do the srums
People are just now finding this tuning? Learned drop A from Mastodon years ago.
Guitar tone sounds great btw. MASTODON plays in this tuning too. Mark Holcomb loves to play around with different tunings to come up with different stuff just like you described, it really does work. Like, when you get a bit of writer's block, try a different tuning and let things open up a bit. I like to write Lydian stuff in that weird drop A tuning.
Architects does this as well with C# Standard, they tune down the 6th string from C# down to G#
Dude I comment saying this shit a lot, but your videos are consistently so entertaining keep it up
Absolutely nasty!
Next Thursday should be THALL THURSDAY
If you find David's old tuning weird, it's easier if you think about it as 7 string drop tuning, (the periphery Ab tuning) and you only look at the bottom 6 strings, and you raise 2 of them by a whole step. This way it's much easier to process.
Even most of his riffs can be played on the normal 7 string tuning, I think he realised it and now he just uses the normal 7 string drop tuning.
yes.
You’d love diamond construct if you like guitarists using pedals! Saw them live recently. They do some rly cool stuff
I watched the recent periphery gear video and They say that they have (not all) the guitars in GGCFAD. And they all got evertunes because of the low G.
So not like standard 7 but like drop 7 tunung minus the 6th string. They use pitch shifting for other parts which go lowet down to F for example
Great video! Random ass question. What are the shelves in the background? Really like them haha
Learning a lot from watching you man. Thanks!
I've to learn this riff
New to the channel, but if you like cool tunings, I have a suggestion to try out that I've been jamming with recently. If you have a baritone, it'll play nicer, but EAEADF#. It's like an 8 string without the top two strings, but I find myself playing differently than I would on my 8 string.
How do you do and save your mastering chain? this hits hard btw!
Hey Nick! I know you use GGD, but which pack are you using? Also, what plug-in are you using for the bass?
I agree so much on the octaved part, at least just for a few bars it would've sounded good.
What midi controller are you using for drums? Looks like a cool little unit
Major Norma Jean vibes with this riff.
Alter Bridge used to use this tuning as well!
Dude.....check out the Karnivool tuning. Drop B on low strings, leave high strings in standard. Weird at first but awesome.
@11:05 Duuudddee nice! on loop please
Learned this tuning from Alter Bridge - Come To Life
solid riffffffs!!! What fretwrap brand is that??
Thanks! It’s Gruv Gear
What the drums did you use?)
I know people are saying Mastodon but I'm 110% sure that Periphery adopted this tuning from sikTh
What do u use for the bass tone?
Loving thick riff thursdays
Thanks! I'm using Neural DSP Parallax here
It’s the Mastodon tuning actually and Periphery were inspired by them :). Nonetheless this song turned out great man!!
The metal community has and always will shit on Mastodon. The will never get the credit they deserve.
what drums is that?
Is that a standard tuning guitar with a thick E string or how can you get it down to B? I guess the E string is super tight in standard tuning then? Im trying to do the same but I dont understand how
First heard this tuning on a sikth song \m/
Fun fact, sevendust was doing this in like 99!
Zakk wylde does this with some of black label society’s songs like funeral bell, suffering overdue, berzerkers, final solution etc.
I got youuu for video!
I notice you write drums with your keyboard. I use Superior Drummer 3, so how do I set it to be able to program drums on the fly? Also, my DAW is Reaper. Thanks
I did this tuning on my own without being taught it
that bass tone is fucking gorgeously nasty
Architects, mastodon, and Black label society also use it a lot.
So, could someone actually show the notes of the actual tuning in the comments? Or could you include it in the video description? I put the Closed Captioning on, but you don't ever actually just say the notes of the strings. Is it AGCFAD?
Don't want to be a hater I love your videos, you're so inspiring. But I think that that idea of tuning comes from architects before periphery, I might be wrong but just saying
Its basically a 6 string swapped with the low of a 7 string.
Essentially 🤷♂️
as a general statement you should syncopate the drums more. the drums could compliment the guitar parts so much more. i believe putting better beats in the song will increase the quality of guitar parts. try adding the drums without the metronome playing. that can actually mess you up
Lol you’re one of “those” guys
Nah this is Mastodon tuning
Soundgarden used it before them.
This is thicc, disgusting and should be illegal.
