I AGREE the HIGHWING for OFFROAD/strip landing and more ''slo fun'' and be fine hittin a kinda nice cruze, and the unnerwinger all spiced up for when you need to do that 1k jump and don't wanna land 4 times ;) eh fster right? but one of each is a good one, the HIGHWING For backcrountry BUSH stuff ''first'' ;) would be MY vote... ujnless it's gunna be a BUILDOFF CONTEST tween them two, HERS underwing, HIS HIGHWING... (again my guess there... just assuming) :) and SEE WHAT ONE IS BETTER GETS MORE VOTES after they are built ;) (SPEED IS NOT A FACTOR IN THE BUILDOFF... don't wanna comprimize quaility for quickness)

What a combo! By that I mean, being a South African, my aviation journey started by first watching the 2 Sling guys navigate the world in the tiny yellow Sling, then I stumbled upon Aviation101, especially one of the early videos of practicing circuits in N80991. I then turned to my then girlfriend and said to her: I'm getting my PPL.
Both Sling and Josh were my inspiration to follow a long life dream and now, seeing both combine into this amazing journey, is simply unimaginable. Thank you for all the amazing content and always looking forward to watching the next!

Hello Josh… I’m a A320 Captain and RV-7 builder (and flying since 2020)… On my journey in experimental aviation I’ve learned that is not the airplane what is important, it’s the mission… be honest with yourself and define what do you want to do with the aircraft, and pick the one that satisfies most of you mission requirements. Greetings from Chile! You have an absolutely awesome channel. Keep it going!!!

    • @nunyabidness3075
      @nunyabidness3075 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I sold GA piston planes for a few years. When it comes to mission, I find people usually think the mission is more than it really is. Wives always want to be able to bring another couple, but if you’re on a budget, buy only for family.
If you have a second home or trip you often fly commercial on, and that’s your mission, then that’s a mission. The places you think you will want to go, you really may not.
Flight schools and their day charges for trips are really killing aviation and cutting their own throats, but if you won’t rent a plane for a week for a trip, you probably won’t even take your own plane enough to justify upping your mission for that trip.
If you are not retired, and you are buying to travel, it must be IFR.
If you are buying just fly, buy what you love to fly.
If you are paying cash, don’t stress out too much on the choice.
And finally, I represented three different factories. I’d recommend a used Diamond if it fits your needs. For experimental, buy what offers you the most support to help you build it.
One reason I left the industry was distrust of the manufacturers. I always found Textron companies (Cessna/Lycoming and now Beech) to be terrible, but they are about the only company that isn’t foreign owned by questionable countries.
It’s a good time to build your own for that reason.

A few years ago I was contemplating between the two door version or 4 door of the same model car. I chose the 2 door because it looked cooler and I thought to myself if I needed a bigger car we could take my wife’s car. Fast forward just a few months later I was wishing I opted for the 4 door. Probably not the same but I kind of thought back to my car decision when watching this video. Now when I purchase vehicles I do what you suggest and that is what is my mission.

Josh and Chelsea, your videos are better than watching a movie. Brilliant as Jean would say!
I used to fly and instruct on Sling S/N 8 and sent the first student ever to solo in a Sling at Johannesburg Flying Academy. Mike Blyth, James and Andrew Pittman have grown the company from a small operation at Tedderfield , South Africa, into a dynamic operation in the US. It takes vision and drive, much like Chelsea and Josh have. So good to see people being successful.
Buy the Tsi first, then a second high wing later with crowd funding. One each is the way to go.
Fly safe, have fun, and keep the videos coming.

Great video! I first visited Sling in Torrance in 2013, when I was considering the Sling 4 to build. Back then, before the Academy, there was no one there. I had to walk around the office to find the lone instructor to let me fly the Sling 2 (there were no 4s in the US yet). I'm so glad I built my 4 (first in the US), and I've been flying it now for over 4 years.

Fueling, tying down, unloading in a rain shower etc - what's it like to actually live with?

I've been watching the sling build videos from a couple of different TH-camrs, and even toyed with the idea of a TSi myself. I personally ended up going with legend cub, because I don't necessarily need four seats at the moment, but I am very partial to the looks of the TSi. My wife and I watched JP on TH-cam as he built his high wing, and she really likes the high wing. Congratulations on the engagement! I've been watching your channel since you were a new pilot. In that time we have both grown as pilots, but your skill and experience very quickly outpaced mine even though I was slightly ahead of you for a while! I started flying in 2006, and by 2011 I had my private pilot in airplanes and helicopters and a commercial and instrument rating in Helicopters. If I remember correctly that was about the time I started watching you, and your experience took off like a rocket. Well passed mine. It's been very interesting watching you grow as a pilot. My personal experience kind of fizzled out in 2011 when I left my commercial helicopter career behind. Since then I have only flown in my local area in a super cub and a Cherokee 180 for the last decade and a half. I have actually learned a lot from your channel! And appreciate your content and dedication to your channel and your craft! Wish you and Chelsea a long adventurous flying career! Don't forget to take us with you!

I have no problems with high or low wing aircraft but have really come to appreciate the visibility especially in the traffic pattern with the low wing. It took awhile to get use to the different sound of the rotax but I never had any issues with them and would not have a problem purchase another airplane with one.

I wondered about you getting a HW!
Like 80991. Lots of room and the wing is the best sunshade.
But by looking the TSi is well shielded from sun by it's doors.
Love the overhead switches on HW and the Advanced IFR panel on them too. Very well appointed!
Love the TCAS, EGPWS and systems Sling has. Hugely well appointed.
I agree with Chels. The HW does have the look of an adventure plane. Even though the TSi is just as capable on small airfields.
But having watched this I reckon you need to build a HW!
Because as the Sling pilot said to you Josh on way back from AVX, you and Chels can take the back seats out and have a huge amount of space. He talked himself into one!
Aside from climb rate HW is basically an identical performer to TSi.
You must install Aircon in yours!
This was a superb watch Chels & Josh.
Happy New Year from me way down under in Middle Earth!

The HW wasn't anywhere close to even being announced at the time of my purchase, not even a rumor. I finished my build in mid-2024 and am flying now... knowing what it takes to build one, I'd build a HW in a heartbeat. The build is a pleasure and very straightforward. Having lived here in SoCal all my life (70 years) and flown in the same airspace and airports as the two of you did in this episode has really brought back many wonderful memories.
I noticed there was a lot more complaining about how hot it was in the low-wing. You'de probably hear more complaining about how wet it feels in the rain, getting in and out of the low-wing as well. The high-wing is certainly more comfortable when you're outside in the elements and visibility for a photographer to get great ground shots without a lower wing in the viewfinder, which is also a big plus.
If you want to fly faster, get a jet. If you want to fly as a productive videographer, stay with the high-wing... you can take that advice to the bank!

I am on the ''build BOTH of em'' bandwagon, and then LEASE one back to the ORG/CLUB for those photograph or other ''missions'' set it up for more BUSHY flying and keep the speed demon all slick and fast for those ''long range trips'' they takin on COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT.... get them a 200knott 1200 mile (1k with reserve) 4 seater that can take off with 4 peeps and full tanks... and ;) sigh......
      HAVE AN AWESUM EVERYTHING!!!!!
(( deep down I think the HI WING would fit what their ''percieved from the outside mission'' of their channel has been (like from the cessina teaching the basics to those that are listening along the way as they play....) but yea ;) kinda would not bet they both wouldn't be able to come up with several PRO's for the LOWWINGSLING :) but yea, if you gunna be doin photos, and may be the only one in the plane doin the photos.... the HI WING really is in a league of it's own, UNLESS you go ''underbelly mounted camera system on a gyro pivito thingie controllable from inside the...'' hehehe

What a fabulous episode of time compression! How did I succumb to a gorgeous journey to CA and blast out to the Catalina "carrier-deck" in the sky, and it felt like only 30 minutes? This journey was a blast! Chelsea and Josh, you two are amazing and the video footage and editing, just sublime!
I also am loving these Slings! - Talk about dragging GA out of the long lost past of conventional aircooled big bangers and getting something really modern and much lighter, and therefore faster on "an oily rag smell"! Having trained in mostly low wing Pipers, and yet having a love of all things Cessna, and especially the strutless 210s (which are very popular in South Africa too!) I think I'm for the Sling High Wing because of the unhindered view for everyone aboard and superb ease of access for people on the ground and with loading. What's a few knots at the end of a long 3-4 hour flight, - nothing. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. What a dilemma for you both choosing! Cheers from NZL, David 😎❤

I have a friend that owns the TSi low wing and we’ve flown it a few times. Beautiful airplane. He did owner assist and flew to Ca a few times to built his bird. My main complaint is getting in and out and trying to place your feet without hitting the stick or stepping on the seat. It could be challenging to get your leg over especially for older heavier folks. Otherwise it’s fast, nimble and easy to fly.

Fantastic video. One of your best and they are all great. My wife and I went through the plane selections a year ago and ended up where you kind of started with a Mooney M20J. It’s fantastic and we love it. Easily cruises at 155 ktas on about 7.5 gallons an hour. With the seats folded down it perfect for us. The TSi looks fantastic for sure and is one we didn’t consider but may have to look at somewhere down the road.

Great video Josh & Chelsea I really loved it! I love all the videos but this was especially great! I am really looking forward to seeing which one you decide on but if I were you I’d lean towards the high wing. For many reasons, being easier to get in and out of in an emergency for safety reasons and the unobstructed view of the world as you fly by is really a game changer especially coming from a Cessna with wing struts however, the low wing is slightly faster as swept low wing planes usually are but the views may be a bit more lacking or challenging to film. It may require mounting cameras under the wings and things like that as well as less if a view for you filming the scenery.
Either way whatever you decide I am very happy for you and as always you and the channel have my full support!
    Cheers 🥂 my friend!
Here’s to the new Sling whichever one it is. I also loved this longer video it has to be one of my very favorite videos of yours ever! Also I remember the last time you flew to Catalina Island the airport in the sky!

Both great airframes. I think the visibility in a low wing is better when it is most important. Final check before departure, all the turns in the pattern. A low wing gets out of the way. A high wing gets in the way.

Great video as it points out many of the pluses and minuses of high-wing versus low-wing.
I had a 182 and then I currently fly a Cirrus. My main mission is Florida to Illinois to Wisconsin.
The high wing advantages is cooler, easy in and out and packing, more room in a hanger with high wing, and there is a more stable handl-flying experience.
Low wing-easier to check and pump fuel.
But Cirrus has A/C, faster, cruise speeds, ballistic, parachute, TKS in case you have to fly through cloud layers, IFR,
Downside is cost of maintenance and parts, and requirement and regulations of certified aircraft.
I am going to look at mosaic airplanes that allow me to do my own maintenance, have a ballistic parachute, upgraded Avionics, while more economic turbo charged water cooled engines.

I took a leap of faith back in 2017 and went with the Airplane Factory, now Sling Aircraft. My Sling 2 is a Certified LSA. Going into retirement this was going to be my 4th and last plane.
My wife and I went and visited Vans first, almost put money down on a RV-12. Flew down to Torrance before heading back east. Spent a couple of days with John and Matt, do I need to say any more? LOL! I wanted something to punch holes in the sky, keep my mind sharp and not be costly to fly. I found it in my Sling 2.
I took delivery July 2018. My 2 was built in Joberg.
Which ever SLING you choose you guys won’t be disappointed. Good Luck and keep in touch.
