Wasn’t expecting this flight to be as superb as it clearly was, let alone rather affordable for mainline transatlantic travel. Great video! Although, I think you guys have a typo in the thumbnail, with the “Lufthansa *it* not what it used to be.”
I flew this thing with Lufthansa in Business Class from Sao Paulo to Frankfurt last year. I was in the top deck. It was BY FAR the best flight I ever had.
Apparently you never flew with decent airlines with new planes like the A350, A380 and the 787 and recent business class products. The business class in a Singapore Airlines A380 is just another world.
It's been a long time since I flew with the Lufthansa, I was 6 years old when we rode one of their 747 to the Philippines for vacation. The seats were chunky, wide and comfortable unlike in today's current seat designs.
I had this as a goal too and got to achieve it just a few weeks ago, so don't give up! I think they'll probably keep operating the 747-8 for a while, at least into the 2030s so you still have time!
Fantastic video and welcome back David!!! Side note, I found it funny that as a child is having a meltdown in the background, you showed the free earbuds lol.
They have no real plan because the Allegris seats in Business Class and First Class are not compatible with the 747-8 upper deck and nose. They are hiring a magician 😂😂😂😂😂
I flew Lufthansa last December from FRA to STL and back via ORD with the A330 and A340 respectively. Apart from the delays I experienced, Lufthansa is a great airline.
Flew Lufthansa 747-8 Joburg to Frankfurt then 747-4 Frankfurt to Washington Dulles this past November. Amazing experience. Last flew on a 747 I believe back in the 90s SAA 747-3 Ndizani to be specific. I love the 747. Need to fly it again before they retire.
Lufthansa is decent on long haul flights compared to other western carriers. Especially I appreciate that they still keep the 747 and A340. However, their product on short and medium haul (not 30 minutes, 3-4 hours) is one of the world's worst, and so is Frankfurt airport, I don't have enough words to describe how bad this aiport is.
Frankfurt Airport is a giant clusterfuck, built in the styles of 'We need another expansion, where can we add a building structure quickly and efficiently?' Passenger comfort was never really acknowledged in the expansions of Frankfurt Airport. As someone working there, it has gotten a lot better, however especially Terminal One's infrastructure is in dire need of modernization, which won't come for a few more years though. I'm excted to see how Terminal 3 is going to be, however sadly Lufthansa won't be making their flights from there.
Definitely agree about the medium haul, it's insane how no food is served on a 4 hour flight meanwhile Turkish domestic flights at least serve a sandwich on flights that aren't even an hour long
I visited FRA for the first time last month. The main Terminal 1 area looks really tired and all the air con and electric wiring infrastructure are not even covered by ceiling boards. I spent some time at A-gates that LH and other Star Alliance carriers use for intra-Europe service, that was much nicer with high ceilings, bright lighting and ample room to move about. It’s the B and some close by A gates that gives you that unfinished 1990s feel. My flight departed from the Z gates, which was pretty nice as well though and the airport opened up plenty of security and border control lanes for transiting passengers, which even some Asian airports don’t do. The only thing that really bothered me was the myriad of corridors escalators and stairs to move between the concourses. You’d go down a flight of stairs sometimes thinking you’re going to the basement storeroom, but it opens up to a long corridor at the end of it 😂
Honestly, as a German citizen I‘m embarrassed that Lufthansa has an ancient fleet with 744 and A343, these ancient planes should have left the fleet years ago. But unfortunately these old planes perfectly represent the general situation in Germany.😢😢😢

Beautiful airplane...and it's great that they fly the Queen and the A346 still! Although Lufthansa and EDDF leave a lot to be desired. And their staff aren't the most friendly.
Great review as always. I have been following this channel for a very long time and watch almost all the videos. Trying to publish one video atleast per week, I know its a hard task and editing takes time but if you could do that you will certainly get more audience as loyal viewers like us will definitely follow but getting new people could improve revenue which will help you to cover more flights. Looking forward to more exciting videos and definitely the part two of this. Keep making such awesome video buddy love from 🇮🇳
Been on the exact same plane in July 24. businessclass. It was so worn out and used. Then later on we were stuck in Hamburg due to climate protestors. Was a hell of a ride.
Yes, everything that shown in the video was included in the ticket price. Additional information about the price we paid can be found in the description of the video as always. :)
Having flown on Lufthansa's 747s lately, I would say, Lufthansa is probably the best choice for av geeks that wants to fly on the 747, 340, and 380 (next to Emirates). They operate worldwide with these aircrafts. Example: I once saw a Lufthansa 340 in Seattle.
Flew on LH 747-4 to Toronto and will do so again soon:) Amazing still being able to fly with them Did both economy and business with them:) But I still haven't had a chance to fly on their 747-8.
It is so rare to get the -8 somehow. Last time I saw the -8, it was in ORD. I'm glad to also have done two flights on the -4 to Toronto, also one in Eco and one upgraded to business via plusgrade.
Lufthansa might as well rename themselves "Avgeek Airlines" or whatever the German equivalent is. 747-400s, A340-300s and -600s, A380s, 747-8is, they have all the unusual stuff most others have already retired. I just got back from my first trip to Europe on a mission to fly their A340-600. It was a surprisingly quiet aircraft even sitting at the very back where the exhaust blast tends to be quite high and of course, I took many pictures of the downstairs toilets 😊 The crew although lukewarm, were professional and generous enough to let me see the A340's cockpit after landing. I will cherish those two flights for the rest of my life. Even if I wasn't going out of my way to fly LH just for their unique fleet of aircraft, I would happily fly them again because their product is pretty decent. I also heard horror stories of old planes, rubbish food and grumpy crews in LH economy, but all the meals I had were filling, tasty and fresh. The IFE screen while small had a good variety of content and the seat reclined pretty generously. Finally, I paid an okay price for my ticket considering it was peak Christmas season. With Allegris slowly rolling out now, I hope they can regain their reputation as an airline Europeans want to fly and that Germany can be proud of.
Flew D-ABTK a couple weeks ago from IAD to FRA in 42J! Loved seeing the parallel experiences in this video and seeing how LH's economy experience has actually become quite good again.
I last flew on a 747 in 2019, Christmas day London Heathrow - JFK in New York. The aircraft was full and my wife & I were upgraded to premium economy, very nice indeed (but that did mean giving up the window seat I had selected). Returned via Newark on a 787 or 777, certainly not as nice as the 747. Sadly BA have now scrapped their fleet of 747 aircraft. Next time will be looking at Air Lingus via Dublin because it is possible to pre-clear US immigration whilst still in Ireland and this means being a domestic arrival - and avoiding the very long immigration wait characteristic with USA flight arrivals.
University exams are weighing on me right now. I'll have two done next week, after which I'll record some more new reviews, and have a couple more exams at the end of February. So I'm hoping to get back to regular posting of videos by mid-February or early-March at the latest. Sorry for the big gaps in between uploads these days! I've got many exciting videos recorded already, just need to get in front of the PC to cut them all! :)
Tbh all early morning flights are known to have a good on time status as very little disruption in the network is present. unless the weather or plan are not cooperating.
As to why the 747-400s have a modern entertainment system: Lufthansa was very late to the IFE game when it came to that aircraft type. Until the mid-2010s, those aircraft didn't have any seatback screens - my journey on them in 2012 was my last long-haul journey without them.
I would love to fly on a 747-400 sadly Lufthansa doesn't fly to Australia but hopefully I can get some stopover booked to Germany one day (or well soon hopefully)
Lufthansa was going to retire all of their 747-400s by the end of this year but Lufthansa change it's retirement year most likely to 2026 because of Boeing Delivery Delays especially the 777X drama. Sometimes, i wish i wanted to fly onboard the 747-400 as a passenger but i knew time is moving pretty fast.
flew on their A340-600 recently, any aircraft type with its days numbered =( impressed that long haul buy onboard was gone, and a range of snacks are available in the galley~
Nothing special about a 747..these are old aircraft that should have been replaced already. Always have climate control or should I say hot/cold dry air areas on same plane. My last flight on Lufthansa was on the A350 totally superior.. sorry to hear service may have dropped off since then.
Those 2.5 rows of economy seats in the premium economy section I’d imagine are more quiet and cozy than the economy in the back? Has anyone flown in those seats?
This is a supper funny coincident as I was travelling on D-ABTK yesterday from Washington's Dulles to Frankfurt. Been a smooth ride and I was suprised that they had a pretty recent entertainment set which you nicely explained. On the entertainment set I was curious what the "link function" meant and how to connect my mobile device with the set. IT did show a 4-digit code but I couldn'T figure a way to link both as BT didn'T show up anything. I assume it is just remote control via mobile? Had to use the provided complimentary one which was rahter bad as you cannot connect via BT or USB :/
I got to fly it from JFK to Frankfurt (my destination was zurich but I added a stopover just to fly it lol) in October. Actually the first time I flew on a 747!
I have a bread question to you all: You get a cold bread roll with cold and hard butter, impossible to spread out. What do you do? Any tips? (Asking because I recently flew Air China where this happened)
Maybe it can change a bit, to warm up the buttter in the jeans pocket for a few secs.. I often do this at the hotels during breakfast. Even shorter if the butter pack is only wrapped around. I would not warm the knife in the washroom's sink because the water is not potable.
Lufthansa...last flight was with a most disgusting 747 from Tokyo to Frankfurt, killing almost my back, and the entertainment system was also broken. A 14+ hours long nightmare. Might be that that the 747 is a legend, and rightly so, but with the seats Lufthansa is using...
I just flew LH new allegris premium economy in December, and I didn’t sincerely think that LH improved itself. The service and food were both very poor, it’s just much worse than years before. Even with the new hard products, can still recognize the budget cutting
Lufthansa is already cutting some 747 service including FRA-YYZ, typically it is operated year-round by the 747 but now during the winter schedules it is an A340, last winter it was a 787 or A350 I believe
I used to go ORD-MUC instead of FRA regularly, and when I flew LH instead of our hometown favorite (and Star Alliance partner) UA, my blood sugar always got too low -- I've always hated how paltry and meager their landing meal is on transatlantics, esp with no snacks in the galley! The one for red-eyes is a mini muffin and a cup of yogurt, literally the worst way to wake up. UA the food isnt good either but at least I never have to clear customs hangry.
8:55 Frankfurt is frankfurting around like crazy. It would make sense to use COBUS or even planemates. One time I arrived at TXL and a bus drove us only 50 meters to the terminal... The bus gates are ridicolous. Even regional planes in the US use airbridges, why not europe?
I used to fly Lufthansa long-haul from Asia to Germany a few times a year. They never warm the bread rolls 😬 back then, economy class meals were served with the foil still on (don’t know if you just removed yours before filming or they removed it for you), so what I would do is leave the bread roll on the foil while I start with something else.
Dear David. How do you combat with horrible ear pressure in airplanes? As an autistic person, I literally have no idea what to use without the fear of my eardrums bursting mid air by using ear defenders or earplugs, or simply shutting my ears. I know some travel earplugs have a hole in the middle, but I reckon that wouldn't do anything. Especially with Wizz Air, (aka hearing blender 5000). Many thanks.

its never a simply aviation video if david doesnt mention the pillow cover 😂
Love your work! ❤
Cheers from 🇩🇪 / 🇯🇴
Beautiful airplane...and it's great that they fly the Queen and the A346 still!
Can you do Qantas with their new Sydney to Sapporo service (or the other way around) when it comes out on Feb!
babe wake up, david from simply aviation uploaded a new video from his flight review series Brutally Honest
AHHHHHH SIMPLY AVIATION VIDEO ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the video!
Now i'm waiting for the LH A340-300 trip report :)
You have shown price in video. Is everything that was shown there included in the ticket price?
Yes, everything that shown in the video was included in the ticket price. Additional information about the price we paid can be found in the description of the video as always. :)
@simply_aviation Thank you.
@@simply_aviation Sorry that I ask too many questions, but are you planning to fly by airBaltic again?
A compilation of you gently patting headrests and pillows upon arrival at your seat should be added to the Unintentional ASMR channel!
My favourite aircraft😊
Good memories coming to my mind! I traveled B747-8 sept 2022, MEX-FRA! great memories!
As per regulations Economy class being fully equipped with screaming child... makes you want to fly business class for sure
Why don’t you upload very often these days? Used to be my favourite avgeek channel 😢
Omg this is one of my favourite routes in real life. Done it thrice in the Boeing 747-8i lufthansa.
I would love to fly on a 747-400 sadly Lufthansa doesn't fly to Australia but hopefully I can get some stopover booked to Germany one day (or well soon hopefully)
well i have to say, that air canada serves water in plastic cups during the flight, but they serve it every hour or around that
Lufthansa was going to retire all of their 747-400s by the end of this year but Lufthansa change it's retirement year most likely to 2026 because of Boeing Delivery Delays especially the 777X drama. Sometimes, i wish i wanted to fly onboard the 747-400 as a passenger but i knew time is moving pretty fast.
The certification process of the 777x is taking ages. It is the same problem like the 737-7MAX at southwest.
Brutally honest is easily top 3 in my plane review series. I gotta have the commentary instead of just reading text and this scratches that itch.
flew on their A340-600 recently, any aircraft type with its days numbered =(
impressed that long haul buy onboard was gone, and a range of snacks are available in the galley~
Good video as always, Grüße aus Hannover!
I had pretty much the same experience recently with a flight from Stuttgart via Frankfurt to Washington D. C., also with the 747-400
I don't understand the title in the thumbnail. Was this a positive or negative experience?
Why does it need to have a black/white outcome scenario?
Nothing special about a 747..these are old aircraft that should have been replaced already. Always have climate control or should I say hot/cold dry air areas on same plane. My last flight on Lufthansa was on the A350 totally superior.. sorry to hear service may have dropped off since then.
woah the 747 400 is so rare nowadays
Those 2.5 rows of economy seats in the premium economy section I’d imagine are more quiet and cozy than the economy in the back? Has anyone flown in those seats?
10:23 spirit airlines flies to frankfurt?💀💀
I recorded that clip at LAX :)
Lufthansa is a beautiful German airline
The world got worse after the retirement of the MD11 in 2014.
Great flight, and yeah your first video in 2025. Another 747-400 trip, and bit surprising me Lufthansa still have plenty of them.
Nice video!
I flew on this exact flight 2 years ago!
I got to fly it from JFK to Frankfurt (my destination was zurich but I added a stopover just to fly it lol) in October. Actually the first time I flew on a 747!
I have a bread question to you all:
You get a cold bread roll with cold and hard butter, impossible to spread out.
Conclusion, you don't fly Lufthansa to be nourished ;)
funny to see one of my colleagues' signature on your boarding pass, almost surreal
I love the 747
Im so looking forward flying this plane from Frankfurt to miami in two weeks. Chose the flight only to fly 747 before its not possible anymore.
I just flew LH new allegris premium economy in December, and I didn’t sincerely think that LH improved itself. The service and food were both very poor, it’s just much worse than years before. Even with the new hard products, can still recognize the budget cutting
Lufthansa operates the only 747s that fly out of Toronto I think
Lufthansa is already cutting some 747 service including FRA-YYZ, typically it is operated year-round by the 747 but now during the winter schedules it is an A340, last winter it was a 787 or A350 I believe
Request: Do Manila to Tokyo
I used to go ORD-MUC instead of FRA regularly, and when I flew LH instead of our hometown favorite (and Star Alliance partner) UA, my blood sugar always got too low -- I've always hated how paltry and meager their landing meal is on transatlantics, esp with no snacks in the galley! The one for red-eyes is a mini muffin and a cup of yogurt, literally the worst way to wake up.
UA the food isnt good either but at least I never have to clear customs hangry.
Jayden Wong had made a trip report on Asiana Airlines' last 747 flight, exactly from Seoul-Incheon to Taipei
No way, I photographed D-ABTK in New York in August!
Love to know your opinions on the Canadian JetBlue, Porter Airlines as it faces increasing competition from Air Canada and WestJet
Happy Chinese New Year!!!
