Unfortunately the footage was corrupted for Sean and Erik’s first duel. camera froze and was unusable and since it took an hour for them to finish we just weren’t able to redo it.
Erik whooped Sean’s butt, it wasn’t even close. Poor guy really struggled.

I'd also love it if you guys one day reacted to the original Yugioh Season 0 subbed, it's only 27 episodes but gets pretty wild, at one point Yugi even pours booze on and sets a man afire just cause Yugi is a lunatic in that pilot.
Shoutouts to the late creator of the franchise Kazuki Takahashi. For those unaware, he died in July 2022 trying to save some people from drowning. Dude is such a hero.
It's crazy how so many creators/authors are dying lately. It seems like there was a good 3-5 authors who made amazing titles that died lately, but still dying trying to save people and I read afterwards that I think he was the only one who went in the water to help. Rest in Peace.

I remember seeing this in theaters and how much of a fever dream this felt like. My dad loved it and how much more uncensored it was compared to the show and my mom constantly asking "this is for kids". They were forced to watch the show with me growing up.
Kaiba cares about beating Yugi because his ego won't allow him to be second best at anything. His childhood was...difficult.
Kaiba is just vegeta that can't fight but has the saiyan pride nonetheless.
At least he had hudson by his side on those times

@@ribottostudio Well, I don't think it was a bluff. Kaiba had everything riding on that duel, especially his brother. And all the Mind Crush did was just purge the evil from his heart. He's still obnoxiously headstrong and driven, just without the sinister glee of literally giving an old man a heart attack with holograms and ripping the only other Blue-Eyes White Dragon besides the 3 he owns.

TBF I also saw this movie when I was like 8 and didn't know the rules to yugioh/didn't see the anime but I still enjoyed it.

Fun fact, Kaiba actually won this duel when he attacked with shining dragon. It’s ATK increases by 300 for every dragon in the graveyard, Kaiba said he had 5 but in reality he had 6, he forgot to count Paladin of White Dragon which would’ve made Shining Dragons ATK 4800, enough for Kaiba to win when he dropped Yugi’s LP to 200
Fun fact he didn't and wouldn't have won, sadly.
The second movie is even better and is a canon sequel to the series. I thought it did a great job with “what happens next.” Hope you guys get to enjoy that one soon!

@@connorwood9211 Bonds Beyond Time is anime canon, the main villain worked with the antagonists of the last arc in 5D’s. Dark Side of Dimension is manga canon.
Well canon sequel to the Manga since it doesn't work with the anime ending... The mangas and Anime vary... Don't get me started on the Arc V ending. Oh wait, you mean Bonds. My bad

If I'm not mistaken, the characters and their cards are written and design as if they are "Wizards". At least that was the original concept, people compare Yugioh with Pokemon a lot but in Yugioh the players (in the series) are like this "wizards" who summon their legions to fight, I rewatched the series with that in mind and it felt like seeing two DM's from DnD fighting eachother xd. And also in the first yugioh series the rules weren't yet completely established (that's why half of the internet thinks the characters, specially the Pharaoh, were cheating, but back then there were no Actual rules aside from the basic ones.)

Because of childhood abuse from his adopted father, who taught him to be ruthless, leading to a child Kaiba to organize a hostile takeover of his father's company, leading to said adopted father to kill himself.
This movie is uber-noncanon (Pegasus is SUPER dead after eye gets ripped out of his head) and produced by 4Kids, but effectively Kaiba spends the bulk of Season 0 / the manga trying to murder Yugi and Friends until the spirit in the Puzzle breaks his soul.
You get a lot of psycho-kaiba in Season 0.
Even when Kaiba's reformed he's still killing people, which is entertainingly insane.

R.I.P. Takahashi san. Thank you for introducing us to the Yu-gi-oh franchise. The OG series will always be my favorite. Also, the movie is so good. Bonds Beyond Time is good too but this is better. Also check out Dark Side of Dimensions, it's amazing!
I recommend Dark Side of Dimension.
Animation aside (it's GOD DAMN GORGEOUS) it's a really good story on how two people (Kaiba and Yugi) deal with grief and loss. Whereas Yugi has come to terms with what happened to Atem, Kaiba could not and did not until he dueled Yugi.
The 2 Yugis looking different is for OUR eyes as the viewer. To the characters, he looks the same
I can't remember if that explanation was in Duel Monsters' dub (I prefer it to the sub I'm sorry) or if it was left behind in Season 0/the manga
the characters in the dub and sub and manga all remark at one point or another that something ‘seems to change’, like his aura/demeanor, but not enough of an actual physical change for them to immediately figure out that he was someone different
So a fun fact about this series is that the voice, height, and face difference are only for our sake. Canonically Yugi and Atem look the exact same and have the exact same voice.

I really hope this opens up the bonkers and amazing world of '90s children's anime to this channel.
Ok quick lore dump, in the series it’s explained the game Duel Monsters was once a game called The Shadow Duels that was played as either punishment or for fortune among high society, where they would summon actual monsters with stone tablets to do battle for them. And the punishment for losing would be the loser’s soul be sent dimension called The Shadow realm (basically hell). And The Millennium Puzzle is one of seven mystical artifacts that would be used initiate these duels and used to send them to said shadow realm.
Centuries later Pegasus found out about the Shadow Games, and found one of the other seven artifacts called the Millennium Eye. Inspired he uses the stone tablets and the myths of these Shadow Games as the bases to would turn into the worlds popular card game called Duel Monsters. But it also kicks off the Shadow Games again and now actual monsters start showing up, including a bunch of other bad guys looking to take advantage, and trying to steal the other Millennium Items for their own evil gain.
The Millennium Puzzle was once worn by a benevolent Pharaoh, whose soul has since been locked away In the puzzle expecting the shadows games to return. And after Yugi’s grandfather gives him the puzzle as a gift, Yugi solves it and he and the Pharaohs souls become linked by the puzzle, and now the Pharaoh and him trade places whenever Yugi is put in a life or death situation to both save and/ or protect him.

I saw this in the theater with my aunt! The look on her face when we walked out and I was explaining lore....
I grew up with my countries' localised version of Yu-gi-oh!, not knowing that other dubbed versions existed. When this movie first came out on home video, I was so taken aback when I first heard Yami Yugi's voice. In the localised dub, Yami Yugi just sounds like an edgier version of Yugi. And yes, I grew up in Singapore with the infamous dub.

I recently watched this and the rest of the Yu-Gi-Oh DM series in Sub for the first time and now I'm just on a whole Yu-Gi-Oh revisit era, glad to see other people experience this movie for the first time

Fun fact: during a normal duel, they don’t feel any pain because they are just holograms. The duels where they do feel pain when they are hit are during shadow games and they are usually established as shadow games before the duel starts
I feel like Kaiba was angry at Yugi because not only he was defeated by him but also his mind was destroyed by him and gone through a coma through mind crush ability of the pharaoh, I think? And the mind crush that was done to Kaiba was about him getting tortured by Duel Monsters? It's like, Yugi just become this giant monster for him to overcome because of that.
The coma thing was only in the manga. Nothing about getting tortured by Duel Monsters. Actually that's what Kaiba did to Yugi's granpa that got the latter hospitalized. Since Pegasus is alive here the movie follows the anime continuity
@@connorwood9211 hahaha yeah but i said this because I was thinking that Kaiba's agressiveness towards Yugi (in and out of the anime) was essentially based and started from the original story in the manga. It's the blueprint to Seto Kaiba's character!
But if were just basing to the anime, I guess it's because that was how he was taught by Gozoboru? (I think that was included in the anime?). Like you must do anything to win. And having lost to Yugi several times is something that's unforgivable.

I can't believe they skipped over the BASED Kaiba scene where he drives his blue eyes jet.
I don’t care how cheesy this movie is I get so much nostalgia rewatching it. Yugioh was such a big part of my childhood and this felt like the biggest movie event ever as a kid
Pegasus discovered and reinvented the shadow games Egyptions played and based on his card game as the modern interpretation. But those with powers to invoke a shadow game can bring a monster card to life and cause real damage.
This movie was so gas in theater that my MOM actually thought it was good.
The oddest part of this movie is that it basically exists to hype up and try to sell you Blue Eyes Shining Dragon but the actual card wasn't available for purchase (except from individual's selling the promo card they gave out in theatres) until many years later, and it doesn't even actually have its effect to sacrifice itself to destroy anything with impunity, it's absolutely begging for a retrain.
To be fair, for Kaiba, Maidenless and Dragonless are the same thing.
I saw this in theaters. They gave out a pack of special cards related to the movie at the theater.
The voice of Yugi and the Pharaoh are the same actor; Dan Green. He also played Knuckles and a few others from the Sonic games for a while.
When yugi turns into the pharaoh he doesn’t actually change height or anything-that aesthetic is just for us, the viewers. To everyone else he still looks like little yugi.
The Battle City duel between Yugi and Kaiba in Japanese was uploaded onto youtube by some random dude. Its like 4 parts, and all the non-duel stuff was cut out, but its not edited in any other way. If there is any chance of watching Dark Side of Dimensions, I'd recommend watching that first.

You need to rewatch it in Japanese/sub. It feels like a different movie, not only the dub made changes with this movie but within the anime itself, from the dialogue, and music.

When the Pharaoh takes over, he doesn't literally transform, that's all just done for the sake of the audience. To everyone else, he still looks and sounds like regular Yugi, except he's obviously more confident and serious.
They don't even know until He's basically being possessed until Yugi straight up tells them, and after that his friends can tell when Yugi and the Pharaoh switch.
I don't think anyone pointed it out but there was an editing error when this movie was released.. the move that brought back monster reborn double spell was not edited correctly instead the card diffusion wave motion was shown instead. Also you have it correct Yugi and the pharaoh are the same height however it is shown that the pharaoh is taller for us the audience.. when yugi switches he isn't shown that differently aside from the fact he sounds more confident and looks more serious to every other character in the story. In the japanese version his voice and the pharaoh voice isn't that different either except the pharaoh's sound more assertive and confident and a bit more badass especially if he's channeling anger.

I had the original, GX version 1, and Orichalcos duel disks. I dont remember what happened to them, i think my family threw them out or shoved them in a storage bin in the closet

Blue eyes shining dragon,
Andro sphinx,
Sphinx Teleia,
Theinen the great sphinx
Watapon.
The first 3 and the Watapon were in those theater packs, then the Sphinxes and 5 other cards from the movie were released for purchase separately in another pack at the same time

The Toon's aren't made too chibi the Monster's. Pegasus is actually American(unlike the majority of the cast, who are Japanese, but 4Kids pretends are American), and he's very fond of the Looney Tunes-like cartoons he watched as child. Specifically the in universe version of Bugs Bunny. So, he made that cartoon character into a card, and made Toon World to convert cards into Toons.

Yu-Gi-Oh! has a special place in my heart, not only as my first anime but as my first subbed anime too. Did you know the Shadow Realm, a staple of the series, doesn't exist in the original Japanese. (Twisted, darkness dimension was more kid-friendly than straight death, I guess.) I'm all for you guys reacting to more Yu-Gi-Oh! though, I have to recommend the sub over the dub. The dub is good, and fun to laugh at, but the sub is more compelling. If you're sticking with movies, I recommend Bonds Beyond Time next.
