The Lego Movie understood its audience more than most. It's all in the details; the real registry numbers from the kits, Benny and his aesthetic being a callback to the first Lego Space set from the 80's, and even the blink and you'll miss it Bionicle reference.

Funny how when this movie was released, EVERYONE expected it to fail. I remember having my mind be blown away when I learned this wasn’t stop-motion, but rather very highly detailed CGI.
I didn't even know the movie existed, as my ship (Navy) had been underway between when it was announced and when the Movie released. So our ship pulled into port in Bahrain and the theater on base happened to be showing it. I was like "wait.... there's a lego movie?" So I went in with absolutely zero expectations. Coming from a diehard lego fan who has more lego than she has room to sleep.
yeah probably cause tons of toy stuffs turned to movie just does movie with top priority to just make money. but this lego money does feel like they were made as a passion project. like yes, made to make money but also the movie was made with the love for legos and lego enjoyers. i mean trying to make the lego pieces move as realistically in real life as possible? the small details you'd find in toys like smudges, prints and little cracks and seams? it's a love to animation as well.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece. It skilfully avoids feeling like product placement, while still feeling like an actualkid playingwith Legos. The animation is incredible, it's infinitely quotable, funny as hell, and got snubbed big time at the 2015 Academy Awards.
All the product placement makes it feel MORE like just a kid playing with legos, they have a bunch of loose sets and parts and just mash it all together
This movie could have easily been a soulless cashgrab. But there was genuine love and care put into this. It really goes to show that even the most bizarre or dumb-sounding idea for a film (or any piece of media for that matter) can work great if it's done right.
I love that movies make people realize stuff like this. Batman. BAT-MAN like if you had never heard of comics and super heroes. A dude walks in an says we should do a detective story. But what if he was dressed as a bat. A bat, which is basically a flying rat. Would really say that its gonna influence media and story telling for decades?!?! Yet, it happened and has had a huge influence on cinema(and arguably the world). It's silly to think about, but that the magic of these stories they can make wild ideas work if done right.
"Music, dairy products, coffee, TV shows, surveillance systems, all history books, voting machines.... wait a minute-" You cannot understand how much I love this joke.
Fun fact: This movie was produced by the creators of Clone High, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. In fact, the Abraham Lincoln figure in this is voiced by Will Forte, which is a Clone High nod and easter egg
They're also behind the 21 Jump Street reboot, and I suspect that's how they got Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill to voice Superman and Green Lantern, respectively - probably literally took them from the movie lot to a recording studio one day to record their lines. Maybe it was even something like "ADR for 22JS in the morning, and after lunch break lines for the Lego Movie". This is what I choose to believe, at least.
The most impressive thing to me was how they used real pieces for almost everything. Playing the lego games when I was younger, there were a lot of scenes that were not fully "lego". Like the floors and other materials were generic. Like a muddy floor texture to represent a jungle floor. They didn't have the iconic studs LEGO on them. The movie had these pretty much everywhere I can think of. Imagine rendering all of those pieces. Impressive
They literally designed a program that compiled every Lego brick ever made. They wanted the stop motion feel But didn’t have the time, budget, or masochistic streaks necessary to do it.necessary to do it
The part of this movie that always gets me is when Will Ferrell's character ask his son, "If the construction builder could say something to Lord business, what would he say?" And when his kid says, "You don't have to be the bad guy." tears me apart. Imagine realizing that your son thinks of you as the bad guy, and you are the villain in his story. I would feel like the biggest failure as a parent.
The Lego Movie still remains one of my favourite animated movies, not just because I grew up with Lego, but also because it was more than just a commercial film, it was a heartfelt, well written and passionate celebration of the power of imagination and creativity that made the childhoods of countless people, including myself.
I actually thought this was stop motion for the longest time. People credit spiderverse for starting the whole stylized animation trend, but I think the lego movie is really what started it. Spiderverse merely elevated the idea to new heights
Either way it's Phil Lord and Christopher Miller lol I'd even argue they were beginning to break the mold back with cloudy with a chance of meatballs too
Nah stylized animation was always a thing, it was Hollywood that said you know what, everything has to be photoreal cg animation now. Spiderverse just showed people actually putting care and passion into animation actually bleeds through the screen, when you let artjsts approach things artistically it turns out you get art, and people love art.
Not quite, gotta go back a little further than that. The very unique stylized animation trend really started with the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, which rejected soft round shapes and realisom for very angular designs & hand painted textures. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania introduced extreme cartoony squash & stretch animation, Paperman continued CG animation with a hand painted textured look, Feast was groundbreaking for it's flat cell shaded 3D look, The Lego Movie brought in the CG stop motion style, The Peanuts Movie kinda had a stop motion look with how it successfully mimicked the old 2D Peanuts animated style, and the Kung Fu Panda Trilogy brought in very stylized lighting and incredible action sequences. Spiderverse was just the first to combine all of that into one movie, and it introduced the comic book style to 3D animation.
If you guys haven't seen the Lego Batman movie please, u guys gotta watch it. It's even funnier!!!!! Will Arnett was absolutely made for this role! And it's like they said "Hey just go ham" in the solo movie!
It was in fact, CGI done seamlessly to look like stop motion. They scanned thousands of actual LEGO bricks to make the assets, right down to the plastic textures including chips, smudges and cracks on pieces. They then animated them in the style of stop motion Brickfilms (the official term for Lego stopmotion), sticking mostly to the same constraints that actual bricks face (as opposed to other CGI Lego projects where the characters and bricks have much more flexibility, since theyre meant to be seen as people, not as LEGO pieces). And at least in this film, all the effects were also bricks too, like smoke, clouds, lasers, magic, etc (in later LEGO movies they changed some of this, most likely to save time and money a bit)
This movie NEEDED everything to be brick built because of the plot. It’s the mental projection of a kid playing with an actual brick-built city, so it makes sense he sees everything as brick. In ninjago, it’s more of a blend.
Fun Fact: the spaceman Benny is actually voice by Charlie Day, the same actor who plays Luigi in the Mario Movie which now that I think about it, I think this is the first time Chris Pratt, and Charlie Day are in the same movie and someone please correct me if I’m wrong
Fun fact: Master Builder is actually a profession in the Lego Company. They're the people who build all the big display pieces, like you see at Legoland parks and the Lego stores. They're basically considered to be the best Lego builders in the world.
There was a joke during the wanted sign in WW West because Bad Cop said none of their facial regcognition scans could identify Emmet because he has the default Minifigure face, and is found on every figure in existence, or in other words, "The most average looking face imaginable"
I was today years old when I realised the "piece of resistance" is a play on words for "pièce de résistance". The kid irl probably saw it written down and thought it was pronounced that way And I remember watching this in cinema when it first came out and never realised it
When this came out, the visuals were so good that almost everyone thought that the majority of the movie was actual Stop Motion with maybe some VFX and CGI for certain scenes! THE CGI LOOKS THAT GOOD!
In case you guys didn't know fun fact: "Master builder" is a real life term used to describe the people who make the Lego sets at the LEGO company. 😅😅😂😂🤣🤣
34:39 I didn't see anyone else mention it, and I know I'm 4 months late, but I couldn't go without mentioning this fun fact: In the scene where Emmet is convincing Lord Business, you may have noticed some clear IRL stop-motion lego clips. So, a little while before this movie was officially announced, LEGO held a contest for people to make stop motion videos based on "taking something old, and making something new and imaginative". While there were obvious cash prizes, the coolest part was that the top 5 winners got put in the movie. Second through fifth were on the 4 screen monitors in the background during the conversation, while first place got used as a legitimate scene of the movie during that conversation. Just another reason why this movie is so genuinely amazing.
One of my favourite childhood movies, even to this day it’s a real fun time. Seeing all these Lego worlds and characters come together was real cool. Love the message this movie has in the end, really resonates with me when I was a kid playing with Lego sometimes. Even now in some ways. 💛
Even though I never really got into lego, this movie still holds a special place in my child-like heart. Apparently, there weren't high hopes for this movie back then which baffled me. But the end result just proves how any idea/concept can turn into something extraordinary and still remain legendary for many years to come, when executed properly by the right people. I recommend watching the Batman movie next, seeing how it ironically popped up at the end.
I was totally a Benny while growing up. This movie is the reason why I now keep my collection of Lego in my rec room, for when the urge to build strikes me.
I know that a lot of people disliked the sequel, but I absolutely adored the Lego Movie 2 just as much as the first one, if not more. I would really appreciate it if you watched it anyway!
I remember going to watch this with my cousin when it first came out. It was certainly a sight seeing all the other fully grown adults laughing more at the jokes than all the kids. The whole time my wife and dad were just sitting there staring at me and my cousin collectively losing our minds laughing
Fun Fact: In the Brazilian dub, Lord Business has the same voice actor as Zuko from Avatar, which means that the villain of this movie is, canonically, a Fire Lord too.
I am pretty sure its completely animated to look like actually lego peices moving around its why it seems like its stop motion cause the animation team did alot of home work to aninate the movie like that properly.
For some reason when the second movie came out, they made a 10 hour long ad of the "This song is going to get stuck inside your head" song on loop. I don't know why, but I watched the whole thing... it wasn't in english by the end.
It's insane how good LEGO Movie is. It had no business being such a banger. And what's even crazier is that LEGO Batman and LEGO Movie 2 are also both top tier. I highly recommend watching both.
God I love the animation for LEGO films. It's always so well done and the jokes are endless! Also, 11:54 where President/Lord Business is putting on his high shoes, cape, and hat has always been so satisfying to me, even as a kid. You guys HAVE to watch the second one!
I had a CD of the movie, which came with a version of the movie with the directors and some of the cast commenting while the movie was being played. In the scene wear Emmet is still screaming after landing in the wild west and wyldstyle turns her head to him. That was a scene that was hand animated with Lego. There may be more idk-
One of the best Lego movies of all time, which I cried in twice in two separate movie theatres in 2014. I hope old sets would come back. Plus my first lego film I watch was Lego Adventures of Clutch Powers.
You have no idea how much genuine joy I had watching you guys react to this movie. I'm so happy you guys love it as much as I do. I beg of you, please watch the other 3 lego movies they've made. You'll enjoy those ones as well.
This movie is digitally stop-motion animated. Basically, the studio got full access to LEGO’s archives, which includes hi-res scans of EVERY LEGO PART. they took those scans and basically made a program that allows you to build anything out of digital LEGO bricks and animate it. I know there’s several more steps, but the main take-away is that the show-runners wanted to make sure everything in the movie could actually be built out of LEGO.
When morgan freeman was saying " you're gonna have to write it all down cause I ain't gonna remember all that". That wasn't scripted that was morgan talking to the sound engineer or director or whatever. But it was so funny they used it.
Being able to create natural light in an animation, was a breakthrough at the time, and this movie, really highlighted it, especially in the whole opening sequence.
Fun fact: I was living in France when this came out so I got to see it in French. I don't remember any of the french speaking because I was, like, 9, but I do remember that Wyldstyle's name in the movie was Cool Tag.
The Lego Batman Movie is a spin-off to the Lego Movie and there’s also a Lego Movie 2, a Lego Ninjago movie, and a Unikitty show made by Cartoon Network. There’s also a bunch of references in the movie too like the “Magic Portal” the kid uses to send Emmet back to his world is a reference to a Lego stop-motion short film called “The Magic Portal”.

Interesting fact: The big gear piece on the back of the Super Cycle is actually a 60 tooth gear. This piece unfortunately does not exist, though it was considered at some point.
Was incredibly happy to see this when it came out in theaters just because I was a big lego fan, it turned out to be one of the best movies ever. Later I learned the directors worked on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the two Spider Verse movies. Mitchells vs. the Machines too, can't forget.
When you think about it, Emmet was the most normal out of everyone in the city, despite following the same routine day after day he was his own person Emmet acted completely different from everyone else and had something everyone in the city didn't character.
Interesting; I remember "inventing" that couch as a kid too, and also not having friends. I get how it's sad, but also, very sweet how our soul, through imagination, "compensates" what we can see in the reality we inhabit.
The detail in this movie is insane. It's CGI, but every actual LEGO piece you see in the movie is a real piece you could use to recreate what you are seeing in the film. It's absolutely wild the detail they went through to make everything so fluid and true. 2:33 the dots on the brown hair and the fuse lines where the plastic comes together is all in there too.. It's so freaking detailed. Edit: No way did he look up something during the movie and know that real life scenes were in the movie. lol
I had no idea that Lord and Miller worked on this. That actually makes a lot of sense considering the kind of animation style they used in this would be perfected for the Spider Verse movies
IDK why but the funniest reoccurring jokes are the LEGOs mispronouncing all the words (Nail Polish, Bandages, and of... ThE KrAgLE!!) it's just funny to me
This movie was eye opening to me as a kid. The story felt so unique and relatable, the animation is top notch, and humor is gold and timeless. 10/10 movie

God I love the animation for LEGO films. It's always so well done and the jokes are endless! Also, 11:54 where President/Lord Business is putting on his high shoes, cape, and hat has always been so satisfying to me, even as a kid. You guys HAVE to watch the second one!
19:27 Oh My God I never realized you can see the tracker that's on Emmet until he said something!!! THE DETAILS!!!
Fun fact! Liam Neeson did both the bad cop and the good cop at the same time when they were recording! He switched between them on the fly!
You gotta watch the second one too!
I had a CD of the movie, which came with a version of the movie with the directors and some of the cast commenting while the movie was being played.
In the scene wear Emmet is still screaming after landing in the wild west and wyldstyle turns her head to him.
That was a scene that was hand animated with Lego. There may be more idk-
Honestly I forgot how Heat this movie was. Genuinely phenomenal.
One of the best Lego movies of all time, which I cried in twice in two separate movie theatres in 2014. I hope old sets would come back. Plus my first lego film I watch was Lego Adventures of Clutch Powers.
This film was the best of my childhood
Will Arnett as batman is the best thing ever
Being able to create natural light in an animation, was a breakthrough at the time, and this movie, really highlighted it, especially in the whole opening sequence.
Fun fact: I was living in France when this came out so I got to see it in French. I don't remember any of the french speaking because I was, like, 9, but I do remember that Wyldstyle's name in the movie was Cool Tag.
The reason it feels stop motion is the animators added fingerprints to a lot of the bricks to make it look like kids had touched it
FINALLY! the pacing of this movie is insane. it blew my 10 y/o mind
You guys need to watch part two
The song batman sings in his vehicle about him as an orphan is a official song you find in the movie soundtrack on yt music.
This is a STACKED cast

Elizabeth Banks - Wyldstyle
Craig Berry - Blake
Alison Brie - UniKitty
Anthony Daniel’s - C-3PO

10:22 I love how the search light follows the guy before he gets hit
29:06 that joke made the entire theater burst out laughing
Interesting fact: The big gear piece on the back of the Super Cycle is actually a 60 tooth gear. This piece unfortunately does not exist, though it was considered at some point.
What I like about this movie, is that Will Ferrel makes a good villan impression and the same voice of megamind.
Was incredibly happy to see this when it came out in theaters just because I was a big lego fan, it turned out to be one of the best movies ever. Later I learned the directors worked on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the two Spider Verse movies.
Mitchells vs. the Machines too, can't forget.
this movie changed my life in fifth grade but also we had to sing “everything is awesome” for our elementary graduation 😂😂
6:52 thàts the moment clement figured he was forked up
When you think about it, Emmet was the most normal out of everyone in the city, despite following the same routine day after day he was his own person Emmet acted completely different from everyone else and had something everyone in the city didn't character.
It’s soo good even my toddler can’t help but to smile and laugh at this as if he knows what’s going on lol
The Lego Movie is a masterpiece from the animation to the creativity.
Emmett built a Dopple Couch to watch with all his friends
But he doesn't have any 😢
Interesting; I remember "inventing" that couch as a kid too, and also not having friends. I get how it's sad, but also, very sweet how our soul, through imagination, "compensates" what we can see in the reality we inhabit.
Now they need to watch the Lego Batman Movie, it is hilarious
One of the best animated movie of the decade
18:58 apparently that line was not in the script originally
We're this much closer to Ninjago reactions guys!
These movies are GREAT. Like, unironically. The Lego Batman Movie is the best Batman film ever made.
Batman 100% would give up the girl. He's done it multiple times in his history
10/10 movie
Its actually animated to look like actual lego, they even made fake pieces for the smear frames and added small details like fingerprints
i actually got the game of this on my ps3, its amazing, i havent played it in 6 or 7 years i think. but im gonna play it after this video
A Reaction to The Lego Batman Movie would be awesome!
It's surprisingly good
The Everywhere at The End of Time reference to the dementia joke startled me. That album hits very hard.
"Everything is awesome."
21:50 Vitruvius is not on drugs. He’s elderly blind wizard with magical powers.
This movie is a masterpiece. The whole movie is a giant piece of stop motion. And it’s done solely through Lego pieces and sound effects.
25:18
Funfact: The blue lego(Benny) has a husband in a pink space suit (lenny)
The Lego Batman movie is a must watch. Not really related to this one but people loved his character so much they let Will Arnett do his thing. Blue shirt will love it especially because this Batman actually is the narcissist he thinks of Batman as.
