      I have been riding bikes for a while I started off on a 70 then a 125 then I needed more power so the 250 but I might look at the enduro 350s with smoother power curve

    Great recommendations. Another thing to consider for new trail riders is that you will never regret owning a sleepier, smaller trail bike even after you get enough experience to enjoy rather than just survive a fast bike.
    Any air cooled 250 is soo much less exhausting to ride, even with experience. Also if you can afford to own and store multiple bikes, the old beginner bike is perfect to keep for introducing newer riders down the road.
    I have a 450xc that i love, but i cant in good faith let friends who are new to riding hop on it because its tall, one sneeze or whiskey throttle from looping into a tree, stalls very easy, and overheats if you ride it slow.
    Meanwhile the old air cooled 250 is approachable enough for people to learn on, still plenty fun, and i can ride it when i'm sore, tired, or dont feel like wearing ear plugs.
    I prefer riding a fast bike fast than a slow bike fast but riding a fast bike slow is just punishment.
    I also have a few intermediate friends who ride race bikes that instantly ride noticeably smoother and faster when they borrow the beginner bike.

    I recently bought a KLX150, first thing I did is change the front tyre from a 2.75-21to a 80/90-21, that extra width took away that skittish feeling in the front end, also changed rear sprocket from 52 to a 47, great little bike now.

    I’m 72 years old, 5’ 5” with a 26” inseam, when seated, both of my feet are 8-10” off the ground. I weigh 125 pounds. I’m really happy with my ‘06 Husaberg 650. I ride on tight forest trails in the Cascades, sand dunes, and ride regularly in Baja, having raced SCORE events 3 times. The bike will plonk along at a walking pace and with the 6 speed gearbox it will do 115 on the dry lake beds. You might have mentioned that you were recommending bikes for rank beginners. The bike is so mellow and has so much torque a kid can ride it at slow speeds and yet has enough power to snap the front wheel off the ground in 4th gear if you desire. It’s been the perfect bike for me. Reliable, friendly, and as powerful as a range bull.

    Depends a lot on the terrain that you’re riding, in the part of Australia I live you would run out of legs quick on a 250, it’s all big open sandy and gravel tracks where a modern 450 with good suspension shines

      @MotocrossHideout  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, thanks for watching! Yeah, MX bikes are lots of fun out in the open, but I'm a big supporter of "slower" trail bikes if you're riding in tight woods, especially to beginners and older riders because you're less likely to crash from an accidental "whiskey throttle".

    Rode my 04 KTM 450MXC on some technical lower speed trails as well as some decent hill climbs! Had alot of fun and rode 2.5 hours but I realized quickly that it was NOT the right bike for where I was riding 😅 alot of clutch work as well as revving up at slower speeds so I didn't bog it out. One section I carried too much speed into a turn and a little tree kinda cut off the turn and I clipped it with my handlebar haha! I dumped it, but not hard...Luckily I was wearing my boots because the middle of my boot was in between the peg and the tree, so that's definitely gonna be sore for about a week 🥲 I enjoyed testing my skills in the woods though. 90% of the time I was only able to go in 1st gear, but a few straight-aways enabled me to give it some sauce in 2nd gear 😌 Can't wait to get out and ride again though! Hopefully I'll be able to hit some wider and longer flowing areas so I can let her scream like she wants to though!

    Haven’t ridden bike for 20+ years .
    Bought a ktm520 exc for dirt and a cbr1100xx for race/drag.
    I don’t fuck around . The Learning curve is very steep and the speed of both is insane but I think if you can keep the ego down and be careful it’s def doable to start on a big bike but man you better be careful .
    My philosophy is don’t go faster than your willing to crash on anything except perfect trail or bitumen .
    I have spent ages out just practising low speed turns , emergency stops , tiny wheelies ( still no good) , drag launches etc to just build the skills base and the learning will take a looong time to be any good.

It has done great i changed out the fron 13t to a 12t and getting ready to tune the carb. I have beat that bike up so far so good reliable and have not broken plastics yet but its been tossed around. Of course im not a bike snob and wanted something cheap to get started. I think its a great bike for a beginner as a beginner. It doesn't matter what bike you have they all have some kind of issue that is documented. But once i get good enough skills i will be looking at something nicer. I'm 6'3" 295 lbs. The WR250R is the perfect bike for tall riders with more than enough power. It has a tall seat hight (and can be made taller with a taller seat and lowered pegs), fuel injected, it weights about the same as me, and it has a wide ratio gear box with six gears. It likes to be rung out at high rpms. It's absolute blast on the trail! And because it's street legal, I can ride to my local trails with it. I just bought some supermoto wheels for it so that I can play more on the street. I thought I needed two bikes to do everything I wanted. I know that a 13 tooth sprocket works good on a crf150r. Might have to cut a link out, which you will. But, so far after being thrown onto a 150rb after not riding for 6-7 years after a bad wreck on a crf110, the 13 has definitely come in handy in tight turns going to a fire road and other trails like Bethel. Just also you still have to feather the clutch sometimes. Also, for a 150r carbonator, you can also use a Honda Helix clone carb. The jetting just needs to be changed during summer and winter, as normal. But also helps with kickstarting. Just another thing, the hot start would be a choke. Also have to adapt and clamp hoses since the carb is backwards. When you lay over, open the throttle, which it would still be stubborn of course, just not as bad. After a long boring story, farewell:)

    I agree with much of this. I do believe the WR250F isn’t overwhelmingly powerful and good for a taller newer rider. I own a KX250X and the suspension is Uber plush and with the mild map it has very smooth linear power and won’t loop out unless of course you’re trying to. :-)

    • @MotocrossHideout
      @MotocrossHideout  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I agree that the WR250F is fairly tame and some beginners would be fine in open areas or easy trails. I just don't like recommending it to beginner trail riders because it's more aggressive than a bike like the TTR230, making it a little harder to build your confidence.

    I'm 5'9 and 180lbs. The KLX 300 is a good cheap bike for trail riding for sure. It sips gas and maintenance is minimal. If you want a bike to ride, not do oil changes and air filter cleaning, this bike is for you. The suspension sucks but as long as you don't try big jumps you will be ok. It is heavy and wears you out if you crash a lot. I suggest one for a newer rider that can get on a tall machine. I also have a KTM 350 which is hands down better in every way, but you will pay 3 times as much for it and there is a lot more maintenance. On regular trail rides, the green one wins. It's way softer and you can go all day on a tank of gas. When you are racing or on really nasty hard enduro rides, the orange bike is hard to beat. They are like having a Chevy and a Ferrari. Both will get you somewhere but KTM will be there first.

Thinking about the new Honda CRF 250F or the new fuel injected GPX Moto FSE 250e which is a copy of the CRF 250F air cooled fuel injected engine and KTM copy frame and suspension. This bike has good reviews and support like the Honda comes from China and uses high quality components and is much lightr than the Honda. The seat height is lower on the Honda 34.8 verses 37 on the GPX which I like and what if any suspension mods will I have to do to the Honda to have it handle well on the trails and handle my weight? What do you think would be the best choice for me since at the time when I was last riding my riding skills were expierenced. Thank You.

    • @MotocrossHideout
      @MotocrossHideout  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question. I'd say it depends on your personal preference and needs. I haven't owned a GPX, but it may be harder to get replacement parts for unless you already have a reliable source. Build quality might be decent but probably not as durable as the Honda (the CRF250F is already proven).
      Do you want a power or taller seat height?
      I don't think weight will be a huge difference, especially since the GPX will have a higher center of gravity. Their weight spec is *dry weight w/pit fluids, so add another 15-20 lbs.
      As for suspension, the Honda is okay, but if you'll probably want to upgrade for a plusher ride after a while.
      Forks can be done cheap by sending internals to Bruce Triplett.
      Rear shock upgrade is going to be the most expensive.
      Let us know what you end up with!

      Hey Luis, they're both great bikes for their intended use. The KX250X is a cross-country race bike that wants to be ridden faster - snappy power and stiffer suspension.
      The WR250F (depending on the year), is more of a high-performance trail bike with smoother power and slightly softer suspension, although Yamaha has made the newer ones more aggressive.

    Go dual sport. The KLX's and CFR-L's are great! The KTM is crazy good. Maybe want more aggressive tires, but at least you don't have to trailer it every time you need to go down the road a little bit. Yamaha is a bit behind on the dual sport offerings with basically the TW and XT the only offerings in that range, but both of those are good for the right rider too. And of course there is the CRF450L or Suzuki DRZ400, but those aren't really for beginners. And the 650's as well, but also not for beginners and sort of heavy and torquey for my liking. But the point is there is a dual sport for every adult rider these days that can more than handle trails.
    Now that all the bikes have electric start, there is no reason not to go street legal for the 10 lbs extra it puts on.

    • @MotocrossHideout
      @MotocrossHideout  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dual sports are great if you don't want to or can't trailer a bike. While the KTM EXC-F models are fairly lightweight, I don't agree with the last statement of "there is no reason not to go street legal for the 10 lbs extra it puts on."
      Take the CRF300L vs CRF250F for example. They're both entry level adult bikes for dual sport and trail riding. The 300L is about 310 lbs ready to ride, while the 250F is 265 lbs ready to ride. That's 45 lbs, which is a lot to throw around on single-track trails.
      Can it be done? Absolutely, especially with some good off-road tires on the 300L, but having that extra weight in the woods is a lot more exhausting for a small guy like me.

    • @Nonplused
      @Nonplused หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MotocrossHideout Weight is a concern for sure, but I don't think it is fair to compare the CRF300L to the CRF250F, as those are 2 completely different bikes, and not just the displacement. The L is water cooled, larger, has more travel, has 6 gears, and arguably better suspension (although opinions vary about the CRF-L's suspension). If weight and seat height is a concern then the KLX230, XT250, or even maybe the TW200 are better comparisons. The KLX and XT both come in at about 291lbs, which is still 23 lbs heavier than the CRF-F, but you get lights! You can ride it anywhere! The TW comes in 278lbs, so not much more than the CRF-F, but it has lights! It's an unusual bike though, and not for everybody.
      But sure, if you don't mind not being able to ride on the road, then a CRF-F or a similar bike is great. Cheaper and less things to break if you dump it. And kids can't ride on the street anyway, so the smaller (150 and down) bikes for kids may as well be trail only.

    The only problem I have with this is my own experience. Now I ride older bikes cause I simply just can’t afford to get into new bikes. However, I got back into riding this year and started on a 2003 YZ125. Mind you I don’t hardly ride track at all. Where I have an issue with this is that within a month of being back on a bike “after 15+ years without riding even once” the YZ125 was simply not enough, I got to a point where I couldn’t even enjoy it. So I traded it for a 1998 yz400f, and I wish I would have started bigger in the first place. I’m not a tall guy but the power is what I needed.

      For a beginner I would probably recommend the CRF 150F instead of the R but that depends on the rider as well. If someone is used to riding Mtn bikes through the trails, racing, etc I would say the 150R depending on their size. But a true novice or shorter stature I go with something that fits their size better and the 150F has mellower power, softer suspension.
      It all depends on the rider and I have started some out riding a smaller bike like a 70 or 110 even though it's way to small for their height but it helps to get them familiar with the control on a bike that isn't intimidating for being to big or powerful for them. Because they can put their feet down easier and it makes them a tad more comfortable.
