  • Hi all Wolf Lord Rho here,
Today we are looking at events during the Great Crusade. When Roboute Guilliman Primarch of the Ultramarines, razed Monarchia. Tasked by the Emperor as a warning to his brother Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearers.
These events are from the Horus Heresy novel "The First Heretic". I really recommend you read the novel for yourself first!

Fun fact. The razing of Monarchia was almost unilaterally denounced by all the primarchs as being too excessive and severe a punishment for Lorgar and his legion. Even Magnus and Russ, the two primarchs most openly hostile towards each other, concurred on this point, the emperor went too far. This act also began fostering a silent disdain and disgust for Guilliman and the ultramarines by the other legions and primarchs.

And whats even more interesting is that guilliman never liked it either, while lorgar was persuaded that he was mocking him behind his calm expression. That he hated lorgar. And he was wrong. Until calth.

Throughout the series it seems like Malcador has a soft spot for followers of the Lectitio Divinitatus. He pretty much let euphrati keeler do as she pleased for a long time and even when she got brought in he made sure she was just isolated from the public for her own protection(shes a legit saint lol) while the heresy ran its course and he never went after her followers. We will have to wait for the siege of terra series to end to find out her ultimate fate, but I hope she gets reincarnated into the chick that ends up becoming saint celestine. Lorgar's greatest fault was that he needed a reason for the Great Crusade. To every other Primarch, it was reason enough that their father had decreed it. Except perhaps Angron who just didn't care about anything. But Lorgar needed for there to be some greater cause to justify a war raging across the galaxy. He couldn't accept that such an unprecedented endeavour was happening by the will of one man unless the will of that man was divine.

I love Guilliman's state of loyalty but it also reveals the gene seed flaw of the ultramarines. Guilliman says "I was ordered to". No conscience, no regret, remorse, or doubt. Its awesome and scary all at the same time. Ultramarine loyalty is almost comparable to a Nazi officer's excuse "i was just following orders". But as much as we need discipline and for soldiers to follow orders. Loyalty and discipline are no excuse for morals. Here though i love the blind loyalty, hiding in plan sight the flaw that exists in that of the ultramarines, but of course it is seen as so admirable when guided by the hand of the Emperor. The Imperial Truth was fundamentally anti theist. It greatly undermined the objectives of the great crusade for a Legion to be so open with their religious zealotry.
Big E personally denied his divinity to Lorgar on multiple occasions. Lorgar instead took this as confirmation that he was truly divine.
It was also no secret that Big E was deeply displeased with how the WB handled compliance actions. The WB persisted with their modus operandi anyway.
Lorgar was basically asking for a censure at this point. After decades of hints being ignored and no corrective measures undertaken.
Either a peaceful & orderly censure by the Ultramarines. Or a bitchslapping by Russ and the Wolves was imminent.
Big E was being charitable with the razing of Monarchia. Residents were largely evacuated and the temples and objects of worship were put to the torch.
Words had not worked. Big E had to show Lorgar with action that the Imperial Truth afforded no space for the deification and worship if entities.
The Emperors true failing was not closely monitoring his son in the years following Monarchia.

Wow, your video makes that scene so dramatic, compared too when I read it. The bad thing is that Logar was made the way he was, he was a piece in the puzzle that went astray. Im a big Guilliman fan, so I think that his actions were spot on during the burning of Monarchia, even though he didnt want to do it. In my opinion the Emporer should have used the Custodians and not the Ultramarines, to avoid brother on brother resentment, which happened. You must follow up, the cliff hangers are killing me. Great job!

The emporeor uses love of the father son dynamic when it suites him. When he created the primarch who was so far ahead of the planets humans (where the chaos gods dropped him) who had bowed in subservient admiration to him. Surely then to them they have showered belief of the father being a god ! Great series of writings.

If anything, it seems to be he was directing his rage at him because of what he perceived to be as insanity that Malcador was speaking. If it had been Guilliman saying those same words instead, I truly believe Lorgar would have reacted the same way, if not more violently.

  • @phillipA123

Ive read maybe over 30 of the horus heresy novels. This one is still my favorite. Highly recommend it to anyone. If they know nothing about 40k or if they know a whole lot.
This novel condemns for me the Emperor above all else. It redeems Lorgar almost entirely in my eyes.
SPOILER ALERT as I summarize what Lorgar thinks in this novel.
200 years father you watched me raise worlds in your name to worship you. You knew who I was when you found me, you didnt say anything then against it. And now this?? You bring my brother to shame me? An old man to put me in my place? You have them raze my crown jewel that I made for you to the ground?
I never realized how wrong I was. Not about thinking you a god for if you are not that what could you be? But for not realizing that gods exist that even you have to barter with, that the universal truth is not this lie you try to force us into believing but rather a truth so much grander and so much more real than merely science. Look at the music of the universe, look at the oceans of energy making up the warp. I have completed my pilgrimage, into the eye, and I found the truth that in the ashes of the universe's death nothing remains but the laughter of thirsting gods.
This and ultimately how Magnus did a little wrong lol. He knew chaos gods existed, perhaps not quite as clearly as he comes to learn after submitting to tzeentch but he knew...and he doesnt guide Lorgar well at all, just tells him to drop it.
Yeah right Magnus...this guy who's ENTIRE identity is built on hope and faith. Who for centuries believed the Emperor a God and was allowed to do so by the Godlike being he called father only to be cruelly treated and shamed much after the fact.
Ahh sorry im rambling, go read the book. You'll love it (unless you like custodes....then you may feel they got treated quite unfairly by the author xD)

The book, First Heretic, explicitly states that the Emperor had talked to Lorgar and denied his divinity.
And everyone, everyone, everyone else knew the Imperial Truth was secular and anti-theist.
Lorgar's idiotic fanaticism is his own fault, no one else's.
Hell, if he didn't get the memo from his brothers, Malcador, Iterators, and the words of his Father and object of devotion, burning a city (while preserving the people btw) is the only way a rebuke would get through.
Additionally, what isn't mentioned here, is that Lorgar's pogroms were hardly kind and loving.

@@t.schramm1045 and as the Big E took pains too explain, just because someone doesn't understand something, doesn't make it a god. Power does not a god make. Authority does not a god make. It's amazing how simple, idiotic, tiny brains can't seem to grasp this.
There is a gulf of difference between "listen to me" and "worship me." This isn't a difficult concept to grasp.
Big E was actively spreading a philosophy that would enable mankind to thrive when he was gone. Because that was the point.
This ancient, powerful being, who tries the hands off approach, saw the future and what he perceived, right or wrong, as the narrow path for humanity to come back from the brink of extinction. And he did terrible things to do it.
But it was all in the name of an enlightened humanity in charge of the Galaxy. Lorgar was choosing, willfully, to ignore what the very object of his worship said. "No means yes wink wink" and all that. That's how restraining orders get started. Worse still, as we see in the next part, Lorgar's argument for divinity is based purely on impressive power.
      That's sad
Hell, in Star Trek TNG Picard gives a whole damn speech about he he isn't a god to what would be a feral world dweller in 40k. Same thing.

The issue is that there is little lore to establish some of the things lorgar was doing, I keep hearing that lorgar was censered for worshipping the emperor, and just ignoring it, there isn't much evidence to support that.
Lorgar does state on numerous occasions that the emperor never said one thing or the other about what he was doing, that upon his arrival on colchis the emperor was treated to weeks of celebrations in his name, if the emperor felt so strongly as to reduce a prosperous world to an apocalyptic wasteland (monarchia wasn't the only city bombarded, most of not all of the city's on that world we're destroyed) then why did he simply not be forthcoming to lorgar in the beginning?
Why humiliate lorgar for worshipping him at all, when he had Angron mutilating the brains of an entire legion, Magnus who couldn't stop getting himself into bed with the warp, or konrad... Lmfao good old konrad, yeah, let's just ignore the primarch who would torture entire populations into submission, who's legion on at least one occasion bragged about the skinning pits on a world they had beat into submission, surely whatever power slannesh, and khorn are getting from konrad is not really a problem.
but fuck lorgar for worshipping the emperor, and helping to restabilize the world's he rendered compliant

Konrad and Angron were screwing worlds so hard that the word of their comming would piss the planet's inhabitants into surrendering and Big E is willing to overlook the Atrocities because of the results they were producing. Lorgar was wasting too much time forcing Worlds and systems to worship Big E. Time that may be well spent colonizing another world or system. And lorgar forcing world's to worship Big E is a blasphemy to the Imperial truth. But just like everybody has already said, "Emps handled Choir boy too poorly".

I've heard a thought some others had, which was chaos had subverted some of the populace and potentially the word bearers, so the Emp sent in the toilet seat smurfs to 'clean' things up. Then since chaos was all hush hush, he refused to say exactly why he had monarchia razed. I think it's plausible but thats all. I don't think there is any canon material for the thought. I think I would prefer it though. I just think it would fit in more lorewise. Also be more ironic, since that event be start to quickly tip Lorgar over.

I really think that razing it because he said no to being worshipped as a god, several times over, leading up to this... It's just so bizarre that he would escalate and have so many killed... This act was necessary, it was meant to force chaos to act, otherwise more sinister plan was about to unfold as chaos gods could slowly curropt the Galaxy, but emperor forced them to react and gained the upper hand

The Emperor: “Lorgar because you spread misinformation on me you didn’t know was misinformation and I simply could have yelled at you for doing so or calmly explaining it was wrong I’m gonna reduce your people to slave and home to ash.”

How could the Emperor do this and not know Lorgar would go searching for enlightenment by finding chaos. Did he really think his religious zealot of a son would suddenly turn to the imperial truth with this display? Very suspicious
