How climate change is altering the underwater soundscape | Kate Stafford | TEDxCERN

  • The underwater isn’t silent, it’s as noisy as any jungle or rainforest - but climate change is dramatically changing the soundscape and the impact on the planet could be cataclysmic. Oceanographer Kate Stafford takes us on an auditory and visual journey, from the depths of the ocean and up to the surface with a clear message - to develop local solutions to reduce human-caused underwater noise.
Kate Stafford suspects that the ocean’s babble holds many secrets about the globally changing environment. As an oceanographer at the University of Washington, she is recording the impact of the melting polar icecap by listening to the water that lies underneath. “Depending on the time of year, the seawater under the ice can be an acoustic cacophony of ice and animal noises,” Stafford said. “At other times, the underwater Arctic has some of the lowest ambient noise levels in the ocean.” With these underwater soundscapes, Stafford is able to extract the shifting migration patterns of whales, the invasion of non-native wildlife, and the hum and chug of new human activity in a once pristine and impenetrable territory. Kate has a PhD in Interdisciplinary Oceonography from Oregon State University.

Seal level is relative and changes are meaningless unless put into context. Pacific Coral Atolls are extinct oceanic volcanoes which formed above Mantle plumes. The plumes are effectively stationary and the oceanic plate moves over the top of them. This is why chains of islands are formed. The plume pushes the oceanic crust upwards and a volcano develops. With plate movement the volcano is moved physically away from the plume which makes the volcano extinct and the sea begins to erode it. At the same time because the oceanic crust of which it is part cools, the eroding
volcano sinks. Corals seed themselves on the eroding volcano and grow up towards the light. It then becomes a race between the coral
growing and the atoll sinking. In the end the atoll wins and sink below
the waves, eventually become a guyot. The cause is thermal subsidence and nothing whatsoever to do with changes in sea level .There can be no excuses made by those who claim that this
is proof of anything but their ignorance or a deliberate and willful
intent to mislead for financial or political ends.

Yeah, but climatic changes and polution of the seas doesnt exist. Humans cant change anything. Right? I mean, the american president said it. So it has to be as he says, he is the president of the USA. Right? (Sarcasm off -_-) Stand up, and kill those politic jokes. NOW!

Why should we care so much about these animals anyway. I mean lots of creatures go extinct all the time if they can't adapt to changing circumstances (human created or otherwise). Unless human life is being threatened in some way, I don't understand why we should stop exploring artic/ slow down our ships increasing costs. Would you ask the sub arctic mammals to stop going to the arctic? sounds ridiculous? then why put restrictions on humans? It's the way of life. Creatures that can't adapt, die. And that includes humans as well.

Wow, you are actually a terrible human. Answer: Because why would you want to kill the beauty of the planet that is our home just for a few dollars?

    • @Ana-wx8jm
      @Ana-wx8jm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

haha why? Because I pointed out that creatures go extinct all the time? Hell, more than 90% of all creatures that EVER existed are extinct today and have done so without human intervention. And many species are going extinct every year even today without human help. Also do you think the dinosaurs cared about the first placental mammal? In fact we ONLY really prospered when dinosaurs went extinct. WE would NEVER have even existed if it was not dinosaurs' extinction. My point is, every creature that dominates the earth changes/ affects the environment and the proliferation of other lesser creatures. If some stronger creature evolves, say a virus, that is able to beat humans evolves, guess what? humans may even go extinct. Because every creature is self interested and cares only about its survival and proliferation. So whoever is at the top of the food chain dictates life for other. Sorry, but that's the way it is. If pointing that out makes me a terrible human, I guess I am. Now, if the extinction of these creatures is going to affect human survival in some way, then yes, we need to take action. But the speaker didn't really elaborate on that.

You are such an ignorant human being.
All u care about is some dollors being spent.
There's a saying by Baba Dioum "IN THE END WE WILL CONSERVE ONLY WHAT WE LOVE, WE WILL LOVE ONLY WHAT WE UNDERSTAND, AND WE UNDERSTAND ONLY WHAT WE ARE TAUGHT''.
I'd like to say what you are taught has made you such an ignorant man.
it is because of people like YOU that our planet we call HOME is being poisoned and is because of people like you humanity is losing hope.and yes you are TERRIBLE.

Is the word "ecosystem" means something to you? When a species goes out, there are always bad side effects. The problem is, running like that, the humans beings could be the next species in extinction. Last words: adapting means "finding a way to coexist" and not "killing everything and dying alone".
