Thinking that something or someone is preventing this way of life, is the psychological impact we suffer. Why can't people see the difference between thinking/intelligence and consciousness. This entire talk ignores the elephant in the room. Consciousness is not the same as thinking. It is not what we consider intelligence. As long as scientists continue to ignore this central question of consciousness, they will never understand what is going on. Some scientists understand this. Most of those never make it on a TED stage because TED only reinforces "establishment" science and not cutting edge, visionary understanding. We need to break free of these constraints and think outside the box of traditional science.

Louis here, the speaker in the the talk. Great question. And the answer is YES, the population within a swarm makes a big difference. In fact, every swarm has its own unique personality and intellect based on the unique mix of people who make it up. What we have found, however, is that regardless of the mix, the swarm will perform better (i.e. make better decisions, predictions, forecasts) than the majority would have made on their own. We have even done morality studies where we find the swarm behaves with a higher degree of morality than the individuals on their own. That said, if you had a population who lack empathy, or are deeply disturbed, I'd guess you'd get a swarm that behaves that way too (we've never done that experiment). But... what we have found is that the BEST swarms (smartest and most highly functioning) are the ones where the population is diverse. Diversity in age, gender, location, viewpoints... that makes for the most intelligent and enlightened swarm. In other words, making a monolithic swarm based on any characteristic is not ideal, but certainly not sociopaths as you say.
no matter if the swarm is ethic, good intentions and high moral standards, if the input is biased and the task is not what it should be. How do you control that? Swarm for a task?
For an AI researcher he seems to be avoiding the phrase 'ensemble methods'. We've been able to do just as well and even better with AI methods like decision trees, neural networks, Q/TD learning etc. The problem with his solution is that is doesn't actually have anything to do with fixing the AI danger problem. Even if this is a good model it only allows us a way to interact with the decisions we want, but a way to govern the AI making potentially bad decisions
I think we need to be thinking about swarms as an "emergent intelligence" that includes both humans and algorithms, all working together in real-time as a unified system. The machine learning methods you mention are powerful tools, but they are not actually a form of intelligence. They are just mathematical methods for finding patterns in data. A swarm is a living system.
Pizza Republic No. That is carbon chemisty chauvinism. A living system has yet to be shown to have any particular advantage over a machine in terms of having intelligence. In other words, an algorithm can be just as smart as us.
if the case is not that everyone realizes any individual is the same as the other, super intelligence is unable to be created among human beings. Presently, selfish seems like to be irremovable from human mind, leading to more impossibility to achieve the greater intelligence of human.
Free market lol. We have never lived in a free market. The private western central bank led global elite have controlled our entire financial system for over a century. The debt based interest attached controlled currency and controlled market system we live in right now was never intended. It is at the heart of the global battle going on for all of us right now. They are trying to move us into a new system where they will now take total authoritarian control over every person's life on this planet. Wake up. Fight. An incredible new world people's based economy awaits us if we can defeat them.
Louis here - the TEDx speaker, and I agree with you, corporations are a flawed structure that has negative emergent properties. But that's because they are not built the way nature would build them. They are top down down structures, with 'the few' making decisions for 'the many'. A swarm intelligence is nature's way of having the many make decisions for the many. The way I see it - hundreds of millions of years of evolution has found a much better solution than the 200 years over which the modern corporation came to be.
Not to mention that even if a corporation was designed to work as a hive mind, there's no guarantee on how it would treat members outside the hive. Not to mention their are common flaws. Then again specialising brains. Polarising behaviour then certainty limited knowledge holders on topic outvoted. More advanced hive minds are probably going to need some work. But I only spent a few minutes thinking these thoughts.
Not quite, professor. Everything humans do, is still nature at work, just as much as in the case of bees. And the thing being criticized here, essentially capitalism, allows for the incredible lifestyle we sustain at this point in our history. What I don't really understand about your talk is why so few examples and why is this method so unknown if it works that great? Is it something extremely hard to do?
The other races of people of our 218 neighboring worlds are all friendly and professional colleagues. We need to insist our leadership accept the advice our galactic neighbors are offering, because if we continue to build our house on current designs and materials, we as a race are not going to survive ourselves. We will perish. Believe naturally the alien people are real and visiting Earth. Do not believe any propaganda against them. Our leadership is the only threat in all of this, as long as we continue to let them be.
Where do people even get ideas like this from? Don't get me wrong I have no doubt that there is alien life out simply because the universe is so huge but by that same principle the chances of ever encountering it face to face are astronomically small. Seriously where are you getting '218' from?
Why do you break your head with knowing all things?Tell me , if GOD gave you a pass in heaven for simply believing in his son JESUSCHRIST and he also said You wouldn’t have to worry about anything in heaven, so why do you break your head in worrying about gaining so much knowledge? There won’t be anything to worry about anymore because in heaven GOD will be keeping us alive for eternally and spiritually!

Scarcity is more of a threat to biological organisms And so is the aberrations that come along with that sort of Darwinism
With moor's law, computers are getting better fast. Your improvements will keep humans in the lead by another couple of months at most.
so I want to know the next thing they predict that I can bet on lol
They publish predictions on their blog every week. (@ unanimous.ai)
BRAIN TRUST really? lol I'ma have to look into this thx 😉
This swarm is just FREE MARKET XD
Free market lol. We have never lived in a free market. The private western central bank led global elite have controlled our entire financial system for over a century. The debt based interest attached controlled currency and controlled market system we live in right now was never intended. It is at the heart of the global battle going on for all of us right now. They are trying to move us into a new system where they will now take total authoritarian control over every person's life on this planet. Wake up. Fight. An incredible new world people's based economy awaits us if we can defeat them.
The most intelligent species on earth?
we already do this. it's called a corporation. And it's not human. It's emergent behavior is very destructive to humans
A corporation is nothing like a true hive mind. It’s just a business making money.
Is it something extremely hard to do?
corporations are psychopathic entities, not that anyone cares. The documentary by Joel Bakan called "the corporation" deals with this well.
He's creating The Borg
This guy's a robot trying to lure us into the matrix.
Her
The other races of people of our 218 neighboring worlds are all friendly and professional colleagues. We need to insist our leadership accept the advice our galactic neighbors are offering, because if we continue to build our house on current designs and materials, we as a race are not going to survive ourselves. We will perish.
Believe naturally the alien people are real and visiting Earth. Do not believe any propaganda against them. Our leadership is the only threat in all of this, as long as we continue to let them be.
gee, you manged to count them all one haded? I need a direct line to them, there might still be hope for humanity, pass me the line please.
Where do people even get ideas like this from? Don't get me wrong I have no doubt that there is alien life out simply because the universe is so huge but by that same principle the chances of ever encountering it face to face are astronomically small. Seriously where are you getting '218' from?
Nancy Malacaria 218, how specific...
Smarter together, tell that to Trump, who works for Russia, who wants America, not working together with anyone.
I wish we could use this to get Trudeau out of office
We are borg. You shall be assimilated.
Resistance is futile.
So true. Many of us have already been assimilated.
Hi chatgpt 4
This would change democracy... The current voting system is so sub-optimal. Look at Trump vs. Biden....
The great alien deception.
YES Sir.
Do not consent to it.
isabel Hughes right they push it really everywhere don't they lol
What exactly do you mean by that lol

Why do you break your head with knowing all things?Tell me , if GOD gave you a pass in heaven for simply believing in his son JESUSCHRIST and he also said You wouldn’t have to worry about anything in heaven, so why do you break your head in worrying about gaining so much knowledge? There won’t be anything to worry about anymore because in heaven GOD will be keeping us alive for eternally and spiritually!
Grow up
this is the reason we are stagnating on this planet, fighting over patches of dirt....
A swarm of people voted for Donald Trump. So much for swarm intelligence.
We voted instead of swarming.
think you missed the biggest point. He used voting as an example of NOT using a hive mind approach.
And thank God we did...
No, bots manipulated humans.
