- Louis Albert explains the process of assessing scientific, economic and social results from the operating of the ‘Fermes d’Avenir’ (literally farms of the future), for the sake of understanding if these models of farms can be replicated and thus serve the multipurpose of changing the global paradigm. If according to permaculture principles, the problem is the solution, then micro agriculture is the solution to agriculture!
Louis Albert de Broglie was an investment banker before dedicating his time and energy in the preservation of biodiversity. 25 years ago, he created the National Tomato Conservatory in the Loire Valley. Several years later, he saved and modernized one of the world oldest natural sciences institution - Deyrolle. He is now developing a model of micro-farming inspired by permaculture.

Folks, you don't need land to grow food. You can grow one plant in a 5 gallon size bucket. Just make sure you have the right soil/light-water requirements, proper plant food and lots of love to send your plants. It isn't hard!
This model is working, not just in France, but in communities all over the world. This is one tip of the spear against the corporate greed destroying our world. There is an organic farm in Quebec that is on only 1 acre, all done with mostly hand tools, with smart rotations, and bringing in good money.
Tonight i made a curry with my own home grown garlic, onions, leeks, bell peppers, zucchini, cilantro, with store bought pineapples and prawns, with rice and coconut milk. Far cry from having all my own ingredients but it is very satisfying to pick food from your garden and eat it. I hope to make more and more of the ingredients my own, but the part i have trouble with is making the food last year round. I haven't quite figured out good methods for long term storage, so i wind up having a ton of amazing vegetables for one month or so, and than the rest of the year i buy from the store. Considering the price of soil, water, seeds, time labor, i'm not exactly saving money, to be honest i might as well just buy from the store year round. The real reason i do it is just to learn skills and know that i can grow my own food if necessary. To appreciate the effort it takes to grow and harvest food, and herbs.
For food storage why not check out the history of food storage? In the Victorian era and during both wars in the UK food storage without electricity was common place. You may find some useful tips there. Or perhaps watch some of the UK clips here on TH-cam such as Victorian farm, or Wartime Kitchen Garden etc. Good luck to you Grrrl. :)

You dont need a garden to grow your own veggitables, help yourself with a vertical garden... it looks cool, and it doesnt take a Lot of space, Google it, its awesome what you can do for yourself and the rock we life on :D

As a person who has tomatoes in his garden, the regular ones bought taste like rubber.
What is not cool is that people from the city don't even know how natural tomatoes taste.

Problem is the powers that be are not utopian-minded but dystopian.
this is all well and good only if one has the time, the skills, the patience, the gift of having a green thumb, and at least a small plot of land, all of which is almost unattainable if one lives in an urban area working for 8+ hours and commuting to and fro for like 2-3 hrs per day. there is a reason why we depend on farmers for our produce , one of that is the convenience of just buying what we need. if we think about it, this "permaculture" is the seed, the beginning of the industrial agriculture. sooner or later these small farmers will become big and will eventually use fertilizers and pesticides. where good intentions will be overtaken by the desire for profit. i understand the need for change but as the french says: " the more things change, the more things remain the same". i only hope they do find a way to revolutionize farming that does not stress the earth just for profit.
Yeah, I agree. This is following a "business as always model". Unless we give the primal importance of agriculture in our lives, we might not change the social structure enough to take micro-farming to a family level or small community level, that might work better. Who knows.
I respectfully disagree. Agroecology and permaculture are not about "business as usual" or profit. These philosophies are about ensuring we don't deplete the earth's resources to the point that life can no longer exist, and can tackle some social issues like poverty along the way. Go look at movements like La Via Campesina and see what's possible! I too don't have time, skills, patience or a plot of land but still grow my own food plants. Can't always be self-sufficient or change the world on your own- but you do what you can. Change is always going to be inconvenient, that shouldn't be an excuse to default to the status quo.
porkyV2 Well I'm not sure if it's as widespread but I live in London and they have something called allotments which is a small plot of land that you can use to grow whatever you want on it. It was quite popular in the past however I think people are more dependent on supermarkets now. My grandparents however grow chillies, tomatoes and onions in their garden. It just depends how dedicated you are but it is a good idea. Everyone can start small with growing just one type of fruit or veg and then expand. It would do a world of good with mental health as well as that is becoming more of an issue in urbanised areas.
