    People without trying it immediately say, I like driving. Just try FSD on a highway going 60-70mph. The Tesla hugs the road, the drive is so smooth and with expansive glass and no clutter dashboard with the superb sound system is just amazing. Hand on wheel and it is like you are driving but not driving! You still feel very much in control because the car handles very well with FSD on and is more consistent in staying between the lines. It drives better than human. I go 98 miles to my cottage from Toronto and never have any fatigue. It is so relaxing and enjoyable. I can early in the morning or late at night and not have to worry about driver fatigue when I arrive.

      Then there is the case where it is true. I’ve been using autopilots for decades and I love to fly the jet as much as I can. Yes I use the autopilot, and most of the flight it is required to be on autopilot these days. I also own now a 2023 Model Yp and I love to drive the car.
      In a heavy downpour autopilot could not see anything and just handed the car to me. Yea California or Phoenix - Tucson is great.

    Driving should never be stressful. No one should have to worry about the possibility of getting into an accident. Tesla is changing the way we view cars. 100yrs of driving and people have grown into a very bad culture of impatience. FSD is critical to mental health. The way we view and use cars is about to change for the better. Think about all the wasted resources, time and money spent on accidents. Take that time and money and we can do something better, something productive.

    • @michaelpaulholmes9667
      @michaelpaulholmes9667 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. It really bothers me when some of the FSD videos show the car trying to do things safely, and then people reporting the "mistake" when the person is really just a crappy driver.

    I think we will see a Tesla Robotaxi in 2024.

    Omar...did you watch the other OG test drives? Chuck, Chris, James, etc? They had horrible drives. Multiple safety disengements...stopping at blinking yellows,.multiple phantom braking, getting into turn lanes when trying to go straight, stopping in a middle of intersections, stopping in the middle of roundabouts, going 35 mph in a 55 mph zone on i95! Dangerous merging, pulling out in front of cars that would have resulted in an accident. Every video showed many scary moments. I just think we have to be honest here. It may get there....but it's way, way down the road.

    Commentary right on message. Thank you. I am going on vacation in the US with my octogenarian parents who are in need of FSD solution to increase their safe mobility. We are going to rent a Tesla and try Autopilot and hopefully FSD to introduce this solution to them. One psychological observation to your comment around 17:30 that Teslas would be in 1/2 of the accidents of the average driver. Most people, including my father, thinks he is the safest driver ever! So, that doesn’t apply to them. What do you think about the possibility to individualize FSD? Your and my Google searches come back individually. This would be the next step in my view. Thanks again!

    • @Muhahahahaz
      @Muhahahahaz ปีที่แล้ว

      First, I want you to imagine the average driver. Now realize 50% of people drive worse than that by definition. Yet I’m sure 80%+ think they’re “safe” drivers
      In any case, FSD will only continue to get safer. One day it will be 10x safer, the next day it will be 100x safer, etc… We’re talking a huge transformation over the next 5 years

    When Ego moved around the guy at the food truck, it handled it just fine but humans don't like to do that. FSD can measure how close it is to the car on the left and decide it can fit between the guy standing by the food truck and the car on the left. Humans would not be comfortable getting that close to the car. Also 11.4.1 has improved ability to evaluate velocity of other cars and the potential consequences of that. So it decided that the car on its left would not suddenly jump over toward it and that it was moving at a steady velocity so it was a stable object that ego could maneuver around. James Douma described something similar to that, saying that he was not comfortable with what his car did but it knew it could do it so he just trusted it.

  • @AMPed.
    @AMPed. ปีที่แล้ว

    They key to smoothness and passing the "wife test" is like you mentioned..just go super slow and limit the see-saw steering. I always use Chill mode. This helps with smoothness. And I believe when FSD is engaged on roads, we should be limited to no more than 10% above speed limit. The stop sign..we can still come to zero and accelerate out in a fluid motion. Please fix this. I can feel the abruptness when it stops and then goes. It is not comfortable!

    Car behind wasn't sounding horn at 24.01. It was the car in lane to the right, that your car served into. They had to brake to avoid a crash.
    Is that a lane or not before the median strip? Looks like a solid line marking everyone is crossing. Confusing.

    Very well stated explanations of the future of self-driving, thanks. I am becoming more concerned with the over emphasized focus on city driving while ignoring rural driving. When someone says there will come a time when no one will need to own a car, we will just use robotaxis, I tend to disagree. This may become true in city driving but rural drivers' needs will not be met by robotaxis. The economics are flawed. No robotaxi company will setup and maintain a pool of cars to serve the needs of a small community such as that in Fredericksburg TX or Pagosa Springs CO. Either they will operate at a loss in order to price their service for the local clientele or they will charge what it costs plus enough profit to make business sense and no one will hire their cars, driving them out of business. Even operating at a loss, the company will not attract customers because it will take too long for the RT to arrive at their home. If the rural RT business model cannot survive, locals will own their cars which, if electric, will cost more than most ICE cars in that region because the manufacturer will need a factory line dedicated to EVs with steering wheels and pedals which will necessarily cost more to build. So the rural driver will use an ICE vehicle and drive further, causing more pollution. I don't see a way around this problem so the RT model just will ignore a large segment of the population.

    Thanks for the video. There will always be times when you have to take control of FSD for a little bit because of the over cautious moves or if the vehicle not sure what it has to do.
    Time will Tell how much FSD will improve in each newer versions to come. I am not a big fan of FSD at the moment, but like watching the videos.
    It is an expensive option to have on the car even if you subscribe to the service at 199 dollars a month. Service can be turned on or off at any time, but it depends on how much you want to use FSD. In 4 years continuous use of FSD as a subscriber, it would be 10,000 dollars.
    My questions are:
    How well does FSD work doing night time driving?
    How well does FSD work in bad rainy weather?
    How well does FSD handle the speed conditions if snowy/icy weather?
    I live in northern Illinois and winter months are not bad, but can be snowy and icy roads, and even pulling up to intersections can be icy or slick.
    Does Tesla not recommend the use FSD in winter weather???
    take care.

    • @michaelmillsap4199

      1. Tesla fsd beta has worked better for me at night time. This makes a lot of sense if you think about how 2D cameras see photons. :)
      2. Pre-version 11 fsd beta didn't do great in rain as it seems Tesla autopilot team was trying to keep the incident rate at a minimum to non-existant. It seems much more confident in v11.4 and v11.4.1.
      3. I've had my car drive in snow with no issues, but in v11.4.1 it does slow down based on road conditions so I expect this to be above your average human ability already.

    At 24:00 that lane exit pulling in front of the car coming in that lane from behind was not a safe move by FSD. At 35:55 that stop making a right curve was wonky too. • @StirfriedGerman
    @StirfriedGerman ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very interesting, but you have the economics wrong in my opinion. Individual transport will become so cheap with robo EVs (the driver is already the highest cost of smaller vehicles) that you won't bother owning a car or investing in one for a profit. You might buy shares of a big operator instead. The financial logic of owning a car here in China already doesn't hold up. Uber-like service prices are gradually falling (in China), expect a lot more of that once the driver is taken out of the equation. And EVs are getting cheaper almost daily. I've been carless for about 5 years, mainly for convenience (no need to find parking, no maintenance hassles, don't need to focus on the road) and it's highly comfortable and it seems that I'm saving a lot of money too, even with a four people family.

    I think self driving still has a long way to go. We're a few years out, at least. However, I think we're closer than popular opinion. Lots of people think FSD cannot happen for fundamental reasons. I don't think that's the case, I think this is achievable. I think the only thing stopping this is more time, more data, better neural networks and public policy. The last part is the biggest hurdle. People seem to have a zero tolerance policy for machines making mistakes meanwhile the human driving record is abysmal.

    I don't know how autonomy will be achieved when policemen still have to occasionally direct traffic. How does FSD handle a pedestrian standing in the middle of the road holding up a hand to indicate stop? What happens when the pedestrian indicates it's okay to proceed with hand motions? It seems that situations like that means the steering wheel _cannot_ be removed.

    Thanks for sharing. On 11.3.6 it appears that some of these unexpected slow downs are tied to map info that incorrectly indicates there is a slow down in traffic at that point. Next time it happens - like at 37 minutes or so - flip to the map view and see if it shows a slow down there.

    Were you saying that individuals could buy a self-driving car and pool it with other such individuals to create a fleet operation of RTs that are privately owned? I think big corporations like Yellow Cab, Uber, Lyft, Hertz and new startups would own and control the RT fleets. It seems that Turo fails to deliver a net profit to owners who place their cars with Turo due to maintenance and repair costs incurred by careless drivers who think of the car as not theirs so who cares what happens to it.

    FSD is slowly improving but not as quickly as my son who was 5 when FSD beta started; now he far better than FSD. FSD can't pass on a 2 lane highway - it can't see far enough to know if there is a car coming at 70mph that will kill us if we try to pass. It can't recognize a police car, fire truck, school bus. It can't recognize hand signals; my son can; it can't read; my son can, it can't tell a police car is trying to pull you over; my son can. What can FSd do? drive down a street, preferable without heavy traffic; better if its not snowing; turns that aren't very tight, it can't drive in a parking garage. Hmm FSd is still about at a 4 or 5 year old level of cognition..

    Of the 233 million drivers (2021 stats) in the U.S., 1.9 million (2023 stats) are Tesla drivers. By 2025, Tesla will be producing 20 million cars a year. Extrapolating from now to 2025, that might mean 2M in 2023 plus 10M in 2024 plus 20M in 2025 or about 32M Tesla cars. Of that 32M Teslas, a WAG would be 10% or 3.2M buy FSD at $15,000 a pop, roughly 1/3 the non-FSD cost of the car. FSD may see a significant price increase once it is proven to be close to level 5 so that 10% is quite reasonable as not many buyers will be able to pay a premium of that size for FSD. So 3.2M x $15,000 is $48B over the total period to 2023 and about 2M x say $20,000 or $40B per year almost pure profit. Meanwhile an ASP of $50,000 per car at 20M cars per year yields about $1T in gross revenue per year. At a 20% GM, that's a profit of $200B per year! Even at a 10% take rate, FSD boosts total profit by 1/4 of vehicle profit. Wow! Is all I can say.

    $15,000 is, even now, a leap of faith that is too big. Tesla should try to sell more subscriptions at $200 per month or even less.

    But in fairness there is the UN organization to standardize roads and traffic rules. 23:58 Like this? How is that legal in the US or are you making a mistake? According to the lane markings you can only make a U-turn here.

      What do yellow lane non-dashed lane marking mean in the USA?
      ChatGPT
      In the United States, road markings are standardized by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). According to the MUTCD, yellow lane markings separate lanes of traffic moving in opposite directions.
      A non-dashed (solid) yellow line typically means that crossing the line to pass other vehicles is not allowed due to it being unsafe. Here's a more specific breakdown:
      Single solid yellow line: This indicates that passing (changing lanes to the left in order to overtake another vehicle) is not advised due to potentially limited or obstructed sight distance, although it isn't strictly prohibited.
      Double solid yellow lines: These lines mean that vehicles in both directions are prohibited from passing.
      Remember, it's always important to follow local traffic laws and the specific instructions of any signs or signals in the area, as they may override the general rules.

      It looks like a shared turn lane, that ends into a left turn lane, but it doesn't seem to have any markings. Looks weird as hell, but I dont live in Cali.

    FSD is accelerating ahead, so with Elon's new supercomputer and the sleepy driver detector, the day is coming when Tesla are officially confirmed as safer than the average driver and have lower accident rates than human drivers. Or is it that Tesla have achieved that already, and Tesla continue to move forward to make their safety advantage one that has to be applied on our roads and drivers.

    Also, you said you didn't have to take over, but I would disagree. As the car performs illegal and frankly dangerous maneuvers you should intervene as the driver, but you just don't. Good that it worked out alright so far, but eventually once it might not. Some other testers rightly intervene when the car would otherwise annoy traffic or perform safety critical mistakes. It's good to test the limits, but not at the cost of the public, if something eventually goes badly.

    Collecting tons of data but this thing is not getting better. What is all that data for? Progress has been way too slow. At best we are 5-7years away from what Elon has promised 2 years ago. It seems something drastic needs to change either on hardware or the way the neural net logic works....the more I watch these videos the more it seems Tesla still hasn't figured out the formula to get them there

      @@ken-mb5cp According to Tesla's ADAS accident submissions to NHTSA it has caused accidents. It's dangerous, it often swerves into oncoming traffic with no warning and little time for the driver to react, especially as most of them seem to be doing other things with their hands like gesticulating to the camera or eating chipotle instead of concentrating properly and being ready to take over. Maybe in the future it will prevent accidents but today it's dangerous, maybe that's why only 2.5 miles a day is done using FSD Beta on average by each the users.

    A bit obsolete the tesla system. Merc are releasing level 3 to the public in the next month or so. I understand BMW are about to as well. But I guess when tesla as a company still has no HUD, no decent digital headlights, no decent 3D parking camera’s, and terrible windscreen wipers then you cannot expect the best automation

      Lol obsolete? The Mercedes L3 only works at certain speeds, when it’s not raining or dark out, when you’re not going around a bend in the road, etc. Only then does it let you engage it. And all it does is auto lane changes and lane keeping on the highway. Tesla’s been doing that for 6 years now with Navigate on Autopilot.
      No other system in any other car can get around regular city streets. Not Merc, not BMW. Only Tesla.
