I’ve got the bigger version of this mixer the xenyx X2442usb. I’ve had it a couple of years now, and it wasn’t until I stumbled across this incredibly helpful video that I realised it wasn’t broken 🤦♀️🤦♀️ thank you so so so much 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Gary - you have saved my life! I have one of these mixers and have not been able to work out how to record on it! I knew it would be something simple - but not THAT simple! Thanks very much!
this is ok if you're only recording one mono or one stereo track. for multi-track recording you have to use the control room output to be able to hear the tracks that were already recorded. if you use the main output you wont be able to hear the other tracks you just laid down. since this is basically a mixer first and audio interface second, you can only simultaneously record two tracks at time. and remember that you have to pan your mono tracks left or right depending on which track is armed.
The great shroud of mystery has been lifted - pushing those button for months hadn't convinced me - until now - just what they did! Plain and Simple - left hand red USB when depressed - routes audio to your computer, where it can be recorded. The right hand red USB needs to be UP to send a signal out... When you want a signal - or the just recorded material - to come into the mixer, then the right hand USB red button must be down - no matter where the left hand red USB button is at! Phew, thanks for that, I finally see :)
my band has this mixer elias..we practice new music by listening to cover song karaoke tracks..it helps us tremendously..after we learn the song..then we do on our own.. great video
That approach does not let you monitor exiting tacks and record new trackd. To do that take the monitor output from the control room output 1/4 jacks (not the xlrs) keep the desk in record mode and control already recorded track levels through the grey.pot under the red record button. You then keep red buttons always in the record confutation. Thats the right way to it 😊

Yooo, this is a great video. I've been searching for a decent review for this product, and all people do is upload them unboxing it. Thank you very much, sir. You've done earned yourself another subscriber.
I agree 100%, it's the major thing I dislike about this mixer and why I've replaced it. I found myself too many times wanting to record and listen to more than 1 tracks or input and not been able too. Better to save and get a firewire mixer of just a simple audio interface. I would only recommend this mixer if you plan to not do any multi recording. Only for general listening of various connected inputs.
I just noticed you replied to my post 2 months ago. I really appreciate it I thought you never got around to it and I see I was wrong Ty so much for the help.
not a problem, I pretty much answer everything within a day or the next but sometimes, I would not get everyone messages or be notified by youtube which way its best to message me at times.
This is a great video. It has helped me with my mixer. I originally came here for the mpd videos, which also are great help. You have done a fantastic job explaining everything. Thank you for helping me to have a full understanding of my equipment.
Thanks a lot, this was a very helpful tutorial... In my opinion Behringer should get some videos based on this content... the hint about the "USB to Main" solved my problem :) Now thanks to you I finally can record :) greetings from Portugal (Azores)
Big Up Portugal :) thank you mate.. yea behringer should have more vids on this mixer, Ive had over thousand of question in this old mixer, it took me very far.
Yes you can. Mic to xlr, mixer output from rca output into your pc line in. Headphones via the phones out onboard. If you have pc speakers than try connecting them to a line in channel coming from you pc line out or use channel 5/6 - 7/8 etc for your pc/laptop output.
omg THX man. i already watched your video long time before i get my xenyx. the last 30 minutes i stuck in the recording, now i rewatched and get exact the point in 5:24 ... ty : D
very useful video, I've owned this board for a couple of years now and really like it. One caveat though is that it is limited for recording purposes as it is only a 16 bit interface.
Thanks for the tutorial, it is really useful. But i have one question, do you know if is it possible to record multiple isolated tracks from different microphone trough the same mixer?
Thank you so much! I was tearin my hair out tryin to figure out what was wrong. My Q802USB records sweet, but my Xenyx 1832, which I am using because it has less noise, was driving me crazy.
I'm a idiot... I have owned this mixer for about 7 years. Back then I wanted to be able to record anything in my studio. I didn't understand this was a USB interface. NO! It being marked right on the mixer didn't give it away. I could never get it to record to my DAW. So I bought a cheap Behringer audio interface so I could record anything coming from the mixer. It worked. With a ton of wires I might add. I even took the mixer to Guitar Center in the US and they told me I can't do it and I need a USB interface. Yeah.... I was not pushing the right button. Being a newbie can be expensive. Don't be me! Push the right buttons! Live and learn. :)
I bought it to connect multiple instruments, but also to use it as a audio interface for my gaming setup. But in this case I can never play sound and use my microphone for comms at the same time :'( Or is there a solution to do this anyway?
Yes you can, from the mixer and to the mixer but with some form or tape recorder or sound recorder if to the mixer. These type of mixers are more like transmitters, where it carrys sound/audio signals in the centre of your studio where the end point is either your computer or another storage device if that makes sense.
Hello and thanks very much. I noticed this video is going back a few years. However in recent times I have bought myself the Behringer QX120 4USB mixer unit with on-board audio Interface. The only slight problem I’m having is getting audio to record from external instrument onto logic pro which my mixer is plugged into. I see in your video the two red buttons you’re talking about and the second one I have raised instead of pushed down but still No audio recording is being done. Instead, I see on logic pro where I am attempting to record, it is a red strip with a white straight line going through it acknowledging there is no Recording being picked up the watch is Recording but no audio signal is being picked up and the same on playback, it is a blue strip again was just a white straight line through it. I am attempting to record on either channels five and six which are stereo channels and also, I’m attempting to record on other channels including seven and eight but still no success so far. Is it possible I may have knocked something by accident on logic pro if you know anything about this please thank you.
Hi Elias. Good day. Thanks for this very nice demo. But will the mixer/audio interface support multi-track recording? I mean separate tracks from each channel on the mixer can be recording separately on a software?
Have you made sure that your audio interface you got with your mixer is set up so the input/output are selected or routed to the mixers? try taking the interface usb out and put it back in and that should bring up the interface where you can select the input and out to and from the mixer. Also check that you've selected on the channel section you want to record is correctly pressed down via the sub or main which ever one your using.
Nice tutorial vid on the Fl and Ableton. Yes, you can do that with this mixer on the available 2 channels. You would need to connect your first loops via the 2 channels for the first feeds. than for your second feeds via the aux sends to main mix outs. This is using external gears into the mixer and internal also.
congratulations for the video. I own mixer beringher Xenyx 1204 usb and since I'm Italian and I can't understand all your speech in English, I kindly ask you one thing. what connections do i have to make to register with headphones while singing on a music base imported from pc? I currently have the il.mixer connected to the pc via usb cable, so in this way I should take advantage of the sound card inside the mixer, right? but what other connections do I have to make and what settings? thanks
That will setup your mixer with garageband to record two tracks at once for the different instrument. just repeat the steps for the second track but remember if you select stereo 1-2 for just one track, that means your saying use 1 track as both the mono 1 and mono 2. If these mixers had allowed you to record more than 2 tracks as once, you would see more available choices. Remember to also click the "I want to hear my instrument as I play and record".
Hi mate nice video. Can u confirm the audio interface is just 2 channel USB or direct outs. So the idea is that you can record stereo/mono sub out of all available connected channels.
Yes 100% you can connect 4 mics max and at least 1 keyboard etc. It will also record well. You can go onto behringer website and see for yourself what can be connected. Just go to their site and select the mixer which should give you diagram of all type of connections.
Have you put on "Multitrack recording" in garageband under the "Track" menu? this will allow you to record more than 1 mic on different tracks i.e mic1 on track 1 and mic 2 on track 2. Press the + to add a track which will bring up the option to choose between software instrument / real instrument / Electric Guitar. Now click "Instrument setup" for that track and select in the second drop menu which mono channel you want 1 or 2 or stereo for that track and than finish, repeat for the second track
Ooops! I just wanted to know how to record music I listen to, online, on my laptop. This is beyond my abilities, but sounds interesting. Well done video. Cool accent! I probably have one to you too! Aloha nui loa, MAC
Yes you can do that but you will need a audio software. You should have been provided a free cd software with your mixer. You would load the track in the software and have connected your channels on the mixer, the guitar or keyboard synth. Play and record on the software. I do this a bit when I like a mp3 track and want to add my own mix or sample on top or even your vocals to a instrumental track only.
If you want a multitrack recording you need a seperate multi channel interface, this mixer will only record a stereo track, you can pan vocals to the left and inst to the right so you can actualy record 2 tracks at one time, then do that again but you can't play the recorded tracks through the mixer and record at the same time. and you also can't record 1 track and play 1 track at the same time, its limited to either in or out at a time.
yes you can, which is what i do. It's my audio interface that has allowed me to connect my synthesizer, guitar, mic and drum sampler. Downside is you can't do multiple channel recording which is limited to max 2 channel at once.
TX a lot for your videos. One question: I also use the behringer and logic x. Can I record different signals running into the mixer on separated lanes in logic? For example: microphone (mono xlr) and guitar (mono line) , playing at one time and recording it in logic x or garage band on 2 different lanes? Txt a lot
A quick question Elias. I wonder if you could go through the settings in both Audio Hardware and Audio Settings that you got when you connected the Behringer USB mixer. I am having trouble getting any audio input to Adobe Audition or Audacity despite following your instructions. I feel that it has more to do with settings than the mixer. The software is seeing the USB mixer but there is no audio input level at all. Any thoughts welcomed. Thanks
Oh dude I little update, I managed to get seperate inputs to ''mute'' and ''unmute'' without turning off the speakers. : My krk's are plugged in the Control room out's and my headphones are plugged into a second amplifier to change bass and treble and for my other 2 ''subwoofers'' and they are running via the ''video'' output to my mixer in the Mains, so when i record I can change my hearing via the mains and I can adjust the monitoring sound via the control room. Thanks a lot :D Greetz Niek
For me it has to be firewire over both but second would be usb because today it has vastly improved from a few years back where there is less jittering. Than again if you are doing a true midi - midi transfer than it's faster and better, all depends on what your connections, equipment, sound etc are set-up.
Hi Elias, I know it's a old video but just wanted to give some comments. I wouldn't connect a stereo unbalanced (RCA from Ipad) to a mono balanced input (4) with a TRS jack. It will cancel de mid signal! ;) Beter use two (TS) jacks (one for every RCA) and use stereo inputs (5/6 - 11/12)
recording this way is the same as running from your mixer (no matter how many channels it has) to a recorder, be it a tape recorder, a cd burner whatever, it will be a stereo mix of all tracks into the mixer, the only difference is you can go straight into your DAW using a USB interface, these are great for recording practice sessions, just not for multitracking.
Nice 1 man thanks alot but a quick question if I wanno put effect on my vocal but I don't want the effect to be recorded on my audio interface what should I press ?
Yes you can as long as you have multitrack recording put on your Sony acid which will allow you to record as many channels at the same time but in this mixers case 2 tracks at once max. Example.. I would always use channel one on mixer as mic and would select on the software of my choice 1st input and than another stereo channel my keyboard synth and in the software select or assign as my second input. the more your mixer allow the more you'll can assign or change around that is more suit to you
plug usb provided cable from mixer to your cpu usb. Windows user will need to install codec on provided cd. Mac owners don't need disc installation. Once done, you need to go into your soundcard settings in your cpu and select both your input and output (Internal & External) to the mixers own installed codec as default. This will allow your mixer to be the main audio interface of all your sound, to and from your pc and also to record.
I need help! I have selected the USB codec on my Mac in the sound settings and on Garagband. Can see the input from the mic on the Behringer X1832 mixer and on the audio track in Garagband. Red 2 tr/USB to main is UP but I'm still getting a flat line when I record. Tried toggling the red button as suggested. Nothing happens. I just cannot get my head round it and my hair is going more grey by the minute!
Try this..open a new project, any is fine. Go to your mean bar under "track", than add a new track or press + below. When the menu option shows up to select your choice, click on the one you want to use and than click on "instrument setup". make sure you have both the connected and hear sound from, as your mixer selected. Now you should see a third option where you can select the available recording channel i.e "mono 1,mono 2, stereo 1-2". what you do is select 1 for that channel, repeat and 2.
Sorry for late reply.. No difference with the mixer because usb 3.0 will maintain a backwards compatibility with USB 1 and 2.0. Usb 3.0 just means faster transfer of speeds from 480mps on 2.0 to now over 4.0 something giga bits per second. That could mean better sound quality the same as better video quality for streaming.
Hi Elias, thx for the informative video. Can I use a similar setup but using both input to mixer and output at same time. Just a small explanation for my setup. I will be doing a video conference call, so I need to hear voice from other people and they need to listen to my voice as well. Sorry if a created a problem. And thx once again.
better to connect them to your main mix because the 2-track usb doesn't allow you to have any control over your volume. It's really better for you to use the sub 1-2 for all recordings to avoid you having to have the level very high in order to hear your recording level with another speaker for the main mix out to listen to the final mix.
Hi Elias Gadgets, I recently got a Xenyx x 1222 usb mixer which I would like to connect soon. However I bought an xlr to ts cable for output from mixer to amp. I would like to know if I should have gotten xlr to trs cable instead? Does it changes the quality of my sound? How does it affect my sound if I connected it through my home stereo system via rca cables. I think my issue is balanced vs unbalanced sound. one final question, did you say that I can only record two channels at a time vis usb using this mixer? I was hoping to record a small band using all twleve channels at once. I would appreciate any advice you can give me pls.
Hi, thank you. The down-fall of the mixer is that it can only record a max of two tracks or channels. If you want all channels at once recording, than no. All channels but only two at once, yes. This is not the right type of mixer for multi-tracking record, it's more a mixer to handle your mixes.
PLEAAASE HELP!!! is it necessary to use the ipad? what's going on if i want the sound to come out from my computer when the USB button is up and not the from the ipad?
after you record a track into your computer, are you able to mix the track using your xenyx? or is it like once you record the track you can only mix it on your computer and not the mixer?
great video....question: is this recording process the same for the Xenyx x1204usb?...also, how is the signal coming through the headphone connection on the mixer?
Many thanks. As your video has half a million views, I reckon that the Behringer manual isn't so clear or doesn't explain how to record. I ended up to look for on Internet after having read the Quick Start User Guide only, that doesn't explain how to record. I was in the way to try with an external loop routing cable connected between the RCA-INPUT and the JACK-MAIN-OUTPUT.
Great video, can I hook up my analog DJ setup, MPC2000 and Korg keyboard all at the same time with this mixer and then send the audio to my computer? Thanks!
+Ian Bailey - Yes you can hook it all up and play/send sound to your pc with no issue. The only problem is if you want to record it all on your pc, it only limits you to record two channel on at the same time, thats its limitation.
Thanks, really useful video. Is there any way to actually play music through the speakers WHILE you record? This is bothering me, it seems like it only works with headphones.
Yes my krk's are plugged into the mains at the back of the mixer using the xlr -xlr cables. Sometimes I would use a xlr connected into the krk, with 1/4inch cable the other end into the front of the mixers main ontop.
10 years later, you saved my mental health bro ! One button down, one button up was what did the trick for me 😅😅😅
same. Why can't Behringher just print a decent manual?
After a whole night of failing over and over again, I finally found this video. Thank you so much!!
I have watched millions of video but only this one helped me out. Good explained sir! Thank you so much!!!

This video saved me! Trying to record into my Mac through the Xenyx 802USB and couldn't get it right...until now! Thank you.
You finally turned on all the lights for me! Thx a lot for the clear explanation of the red buttons.
Thank you Elias for posting this video. I learned a lot. This has been a great help. Good luck!
I almost spent an extra 100 on a USB turntable then I remembered that I had this mixer. I had never used it to record LPs, so thank you big time.
Thanks, Elias. I just got a Xenyx, and I was having trouble figuring how to send my audio out to a recorder. This was very helpful!

@David Redman cba 😁 Done my bit
WOW! I REALLY NEEDED THIS TUTORIAL..I COULDNT GET MINE TO WORK WHEN I PURCHASED IT.. AND THE MANUAL DIDNT HELP AT ALL..THNX DUDE!

Thanks so much!

@ Jason Mendelssohn - No I have not experience that, have you changed the usb cable and did you get the same results?.
Elias, great video. What cables would I need from the Mixer to a USB Keyboard? And would something like Arturia work along with this? thanks again..
Very helpful video!!!! It answered a lot of questions I had. Peace!!!!

and you also can't record 1 track and play 1 track at the same time, its limited to either in or out at a time.
yes you can, which is what i do. It's my audio interface that has allowed me to connect my synthesizer, guitar, mic and drum sampler. Downside is you can't do multiple channel recording which is limited to max 2 channel at once.
Thanx! You make it very easy, although i don't understand much english
TX a lot for your videos.
One question:
I also use the behringer and logic x.
Thanks
quick question....on the mixer, where the rca jacks are. would I still be pushing down the 2 track button for output to video camera with mic input?
Oh dude I little update, I managed to get seperate inputs to ''mute'' and ''unmute'' without turning off the speakers.
: My krk's are plugged in the Control room out's and my headphones are plugged into a second amplifier to change bass and treble and for my other 2 ''subwoofers'' and they are running via the ''video'' output to my mixer in the Mains, so when i record I can change my hearing via the mains and I can adjust the monitoring sound via the control room.
Thanks a lot :D

For me it has to be firewire over both but second would be usb because today it has vastly improved from a few years back where there is less jittering. Than again if you are doing a true midi - midi transfer than it's faster and better, all depends on what your connections, equipment, sound etc are set-up.
BRO thank you so much this got me going. Thank you again
Hi Elias, I know it's a old video but just wanted to give some comments.
I wouldn't connect a stereo unbalanced (RCA from Ipad) to a mono balanced input (4) with a TRS jack.
It will cancel de mid signal! ;)
Beter use two (TS) jacks (one for every RCA) and use stereo inputs (5/6 - 11/12)
recording this way is the same as running from your mixer (no matter how many channels it has) to a recorder, be it a tape recorder, a cd burner whatever, it will be a stereo mix of all tracks into the mixer, the only difference is you can go straight into your DAW using a USB interface, these are great for recording practice sessions, just not for multitracking.
nevermind i got it thanks so much for the video been searching for one for a while thats this good!
Good stuff and thanks for the info. Very helpful.
Thanks for immediate reply..... its a great help... keep it up
Nice 1 man thanks alot but a quick question if I wanno put effect on my vocal but I don't want the effect to be recorded on my audio interface what should I press ?
Yes you can as long as you have multitrack recording put on your Sony acid which will allow you to record as many channels at the same time but in this mixers case 2 tracks at once max. Example.. I would always use channel one on mixer as mic and would select on the software of my choice 1st input and than another stereo channel my keyboard synth and in the software select or assign as my second input. the more your mixer allow the more you'll can assign or change around that is more suit to you
Very helpful for beginners!!!
Thanks!
Pretty cool ive been trying to figure this out all day hehehe and this video fixed that thanks
plug usb provided cable from mixer to your cpu usb.
What cable did you use to connect the mixer to the mac? Left and Right Chinche to a 3.5mm or to a usb?
Very good explanation . Thank a lot for that.
PLEAAASE HELP!!! is it necessary to use the ipad? what's going on if i want the sound to come out from my computer when the USB button is up and not the from the ipad?
after you record a track into your computer, are you able to mix the track using your xenyx? or is it like once you record the track you can only mix it on your computer and not the mixer?
great video....question: is this recording process the same for the Xenyx x1204usb?...also, how is the signal coming through the headphone connection on the mixer?
it was very useful! thanks
That video helped me a lot ❤️
Great video, can I hook up my analog DJ setup, MPC2000 and Korg keyboard all at the same time with this mixer and then send the audio to my computer? Thanks!
+Ian Bailey - Yes you can hook it all up and play/send sound to your pc with no issue. The only problem is if you want to record it all on your pc, it only limits you to record two channel on at the same time, thats its limitation.
+Elias Gadgets (Gary) thanks again!
Thanks dude
This was very helpful to a recording nubie.
Thanks, really useful video. Is there any way to actually play music through the speakers WHILE you record? This is bothering me, it seems like it only works with headphones.
Did you find the solution?
Yes my krk's are plugged into the mains at the back of the mixer using the xlr -xlr cables. Sometimes I would use a xlr connected into the krk, with 1/4inch cable the other end into the front of the mixers main ontop.
