My mom has a Model 3, and the way I always describe it is "It feels like a car designed by a Silicon Valley tech company - which it is." Overall it's pretty nice, but there are things that make me prefer my old Bug - rearward visibility (without relying on the backup camera) is terrible, it's pretty lousy in a parking lot (visibility+turn radius), if your phone's bluetooth is broken it's a royal pain to do anything, and while the touch screen may be "intuitive" you still have to take your eyes off the road to do anything on it, unlike physical switches. Also, it doesn't do well in cold weather, which I believe to be a combinaton of inherent limitations of electric car technology and designer oversight as it was designed in a place that never gets cold. But it's very fast, handles quite well (especially considering it's weight), is comfortable, eerily quiet, and of course doesn't need gas. The big question is how long it will last before very expensive problems crop up, that's something nobody knows yet as they've not been around long enough to see.

My biggest complaint would be the lack of normal gauges and physical controls for things such as the air conditioner.
The gauge issue could be fixed partly by adding a HUD.

    • @PrimiusLovin
      @PrimiusLovin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I prefer a HUD to keep the dashboard as simple as possible, which is Tesla's Model 3 most recognized interior signature.
With a HUD I barely check the instrument gauges anyway, the focus remains purely on what's on the road ahead, and not on what's inside the car... which is the way it should be when driving!

Would like the interior 10x more if it had a dedicated instrument cluster like the Model S or almost any other car. It’s just annoying having to look over at the middle display and could potentially be distracting. It’s almost as if Tesla made it like this for the sheer fact of being different.

    • @willferland

They did it just to be different. They didn’t care about simplicity because it not simple. They just wanted to create something as far from a regular car as they could... so they were like uhh welll durrrr let’s put everything in the middle

Remember the reason why the old mini had a centrally mounted speedometer?
Cheaper to build because they would have to build a left hand drive dashboard.
      It's all about the cost.
It's why the $50,000 Model 3 has the rear view mirror that looks like it came from an 80's econobox

Problem with touchscreens is that the buttons don't always stay in one place. As you switch between menus, the button placements change.
That's why the Model 3's center display has a persistent bottom row for stuff like climate control. They need to stay in one spot.

I am an old-school car guy, I like NA V8’s and V12’s. But I daily a Tesla Model S 100D as a company loaner; honestly the 100D made me have an extensional crisis. Let me explain. To start with, the Tesla handles well, although it might be heavy, because the center of mass is so low there is almost no roll. I love the Tesla’s but does this not make me a car guy? Is my fun car with the NA engine now obsolete? I always said build quality was very important; that’s why I liked old Mercedes, but the Model S is pretty poorly build, yet I still love it. And so on. It made me question: what is the point of being a car guy? The Tesla takes the nobility out of driving fast; with a Tesla it’s easy to smoke someone; there is no skill. Do sports-cars even have a place in this day and age?

Thinking it ever took skill to go fast is just self delusion. Yes you shift gears and your car goes vroom vroom real loud, but anyone can do it. But I think you've pointed out a big reason why "car guys" don't like teslas - They're afraid EVs will eliminate something that they consider themselves good at.

I'm in my twenties, didn't grow up with any 'old school' cars, and I still went out and bought something as basic as it gets to offset my push-button-start, touch screen having, rear view camera savvy, turbo ecoboost daily. My second car is literally manual everything from trans to rolly windows to seats, to that honestly satisfying turn key ignition. I don't know what it is, but that back to basics kind of thing just feels good to drive, so I think there will always be a place in our society for people who want to enjoy this kind of thing. And its less about speed, and more about just the fun of the drive I think, because I don't have to be going real fast to enjoy myself on a nice winding road through the trees.

Follow up: I doubt you'll read this but I have some questions about your analogy. Do you liken Musk to André in the film? If that is the case, then the rules of the internet are the same elitist rules of the game that Renoir claimed prompted indifference to facism in the 1930s. Renoir even called his film a war film (without any war). Do you see internet culture as some sort of precursor to a type of war, cultural or otherwise?

$35k model will probably be a loooong time coming, but it's a $49k car; 50 if you want a color. I've seen no indication that adding another $10k in options gets you a car any faster.
To be honest, I thought I'd have the usual buyer's remorse but I'm actually really, REALLY happy with it. It's a fantastic car, you've just gotta ignore the pitchman, unfortunately.

Not sure if this is your Model 3, or someone you know. In regards to the Frunk hood alignment, you can fix this in about 5 seconds (I did this on my own personal Model 3.)
Lift up the hood and you will see 2 large plastic/ rubber "screws" on either side of the hood. Simply adjust that "screw" in or out, and that will fix your alignment issue.
I hope this helps you, or the owner of the car.
