My first car was a 4WS Prelude, and it RUINED me as a driver. Nothing I have driven since has handled as well as that car, no other car has had better visibility. I miss that car so much, especially after replacing the motor with a 4th gen Prelude H22 motor and upgrading the suspension. I'll never forgive my Grandmother for selling it while I was Afghanistan.

Yeah, I don't know how Mr. Regular managed to miss this. Any amount of basic research (or literally just watching the rear wheels) would clue you in to the fact that the rear wheels are always being steered. At a certain point they change direction.
My dad had a 4WS for most of my childhood. Absolutely the coolest thing you can do with these cars is change lanes on the highway without the car changing it's forward direction.

To really feel the effect of the "crabwalk", find a wide empty open road, accelerate to 60+ mph and do an emergency lane change maneuver, then you will feel the difference.
My buddy had one of these and did that at 85mph while racing a Camaro sadly he's not a good driver and lost it but only ran the side of it down the barrier he still has it and is rebuilding it

"and they waddle off, going back to their fricking chevy belairs and thier fricking fuzzy dice and their fat wives". Exactly how I feel about that crowd.
am i the only one bothered by co-mingling the term "4 wheel drive" and "4 wheel steer", 2 very different things!! if you want a 4WD prelude add a rear differential, transfer case and lockers.
Had an '89 4WS. Lived in ID, AZ, CO, and MO. Both AZ and CO required a new title when I got the licence there, and both screwed up the title by calling it 'Prelude 4WD SI'.🤡
Me: dad, look, it has 4 wheel steering. Dad: is the 4 wheel drive mechanical? Me: 4 wheel steering. Dad: what's it like to park next to a curb with 4 wheel drive steering. Me: just 4 wheel steering. Dad: are people excited to see 4 wheel drive steering? Me: not 4 wheel drive. Dad: so, Honda did it, made a fully mechanical 4 wheel drive system. Me: Okay, dad, you win.
I feel sorry that your dad was a jerk, but I can understand because when I was a kid and talk of the dodo get viper or the Honda fast cars my dad was a jerk to saying,” you could get the same speed and same gear set for less if you get a Chevy Silverado.” I just stopped and stared at him, didn’t say anything and was thinking in my head,” do you know how damn stupid you sound right now. Do you ?” But he never liked any other car that was not a Chevy masterpiece to him. Oh well, I still like fast Honda cars that can whoop Chevy ass in any street race from games set in Tokyo or anywhere else that was not North America, until Honda still whooped Chevy ass just because they could. Hope your having a better mood and understand that not everyone you talk to about cars may not like the same brand, even if they don’t get it, why this car calls to you. That’s fine just tell yourself this is my love and my joy, so to hell with anyone else who is just being a jerk just to be a jerk. I hope your in a better mood, really I hope your are okay. Best wishes, a fellow human being who understands feelings who know what it like to love something.
"...and they waddle off, go back to their frickin' Chevy Bel Airs and their frickin' fuzzy dice and their fat wives. Yeah, eat another chili dog and talk about the good times." Every car meet I've ever been to has one of these types. What gives?
@regularcars I'd like to note that the tires actually go in the same direction if you are doing a lane change amount of steering. The car literally goes sideways into the next lane and probably a cooler feeling than the full lock mechanism. I remember this very clearly and you can even see the tires do this at 2:21 and 3:23
Jason Spencer trust me, you don't want to drive this car if you care about safety. Even in low speed accidents, the passenger cabin will crumple up like a tin can. People just don't care about safety until they're in a hospital with disfiguring lifelong injuries or worse...
OhighO Skater-- Yeah man, they were always part of my well balanced breakfast in asbestos bowls and covered in freshly squeezed milk I harvested from my cat, Booger, every morning before school! Bruh, I sure miss that cat!
@@MikeyRB77 yeah that wasnt his brightest moments but I cant bash the guy for that for all the right things he says he's gonna slip with some BS sooner or later
His entire description of the system was...just...wrong. The steering wheel runs the steering shaft, the shaft runs the pinion, the pinion runs the rack and the front tie rods. The rack runs a second pinion, which runs the transfer shaft, which runs a complex eccentric gear in the rear housing which runs the rear tie rods. No driveshaft, no differential, no half shaft.... Of course he massacred Honda’s engines of that period as well, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.
I had a Silverado with quadrasteer. If memory serves correctly under 10-15 mph the rears would be capable of their full travel in opposite direction of the front tires giving you the shortest turning radius. In the 15-45 mph range the degrees that the tears would turn in the opposite direction were limited. Above that mph range and into “highway” speed the rears had limited degrees of steering and changed direction to turn with the front tires. At higher speeds the truck felt extremely stable, more so in my option than a truck without 4WS. 4WS was great and I truly believe that truck was the best I have ever had in terms of ride comfort and stability. The only time 4WS wasn’t desirable to me was in slushy snow conditions as it made counter steer corrections feel unnatural.
Had a red 1988 4WS with a stick shift when I was 18. Drove it from 2004-2008 and managed to go from 120k to 212k and still got $2800 out of it when I sold it. Only had to replace a thermostat, an alternator, and the timing belt. To date, my most favorite car out of the 10 other vehicles I've owned since 2008. Still remember the VIN number by heart. Still remember the looks I'd used to get in traffic when I'd successfully pull off a U-turn on a 2 lane street!
OMFG you guys finally reviewed a Prelude!!! My daily! Well... almost. (I drive a 2nd gen) AND you got ahold of a model with 4 wheel steering! yeah! Hells to the yeah! The 2nd and 3rd gen Preludes might not be fast off the line, but these cars stick to the road like they have been NAILED to it (Unfortunately the 1.8l ones accelerate the same way). Slow down for what? I can corner hard enough to break an aftermarket cupholder and watch my coffee mug sail across the car in slo-mo to explode on the passenger door! I love these cars. This was Honda's A-game
TalenGryphon I have one too, a ‘91 with the B21 2.1 engine, it’s not fast compared to my JDM twin turbo Subaru Legacy, but it’s more fun to drive stupidly
Now honda cares more about lane keeping assist, rear view cameras, automatic parking brakes, push button automatic transmission interfaces and other “safety” systems that like to disobey the driver, and overheating over-styled r-type civics that are plastered with fake carbon fiber. I am disappointed.
Happy memories! I had one of these, years ago, including the 4WS system. A dark metallic blue so dark, most people thought it was black. Boot spoiler looked brilliant! I had it lowered, so the five-spoke 17inch alloys I bought (with 'spacers') filled the wheel arches and it looked utterly amazing, the way it sat so well-planted on the road - and it felt like a go-kart! I eventually replaced it with bright red BMW 3 series with big alloys and all the BMW factory-fitted kit, and every person I knew said the Honda had looked way better and, deep inside, I knew this to be true. What a brilliant car that Prelude was, and what a poor follow-up that BMW was!
The Darger and 4WS comparison is pretty apt. I had no idea the Prelude Si 4WS even existed. It's art for art sakes, outsider art. It's sad to me that the owner is often meet by older folks who just want to check the alignment but proof that the younger people just don't know what it is. Preludes are neat enough but, this, this is art. I want one.
oh boy, I had one of these with a manual gearbox, and believe me... it was SLOW. Fun in corners, but the lack of power on acceleration was unbearable. Also, definitely the most unreliable car I've ever owned. And just wait until the power (assist) steering went out... with 4 wheels to move... (and it will go out - once every six months. A simple $150 fix, but still). And when you need to replace the sunroof gasket because it leaks, that'll be about $400. And you should know that the alternators on these engines notoriously go out about every 10 months, usually at 4am on an interstate in the rain. My local Honda dealer still stocks them, and that should tell you a lot. Mine actually cremated itself on the side of I-85 in N. Carolina, about two days after having replaced the timing belt and buying its fourth alternator.
One thing you didn’t mention is that at slight steering angles, the rear wheels actually turn a tiny bit *in parallel* with the front wheels, so during lane change maneuvers, the body wouldn’t angle as much in relation to the forward direction, sort of “crabbing” or “drifting” into the next lane. You can see this in the parts of the video where the owner is demonstrating the 4WS while standing still. The rear wheels nudge slightly in the same direction as the fronts, then reverse direction.
I think it was a breathtakingly high price back in 1989, added to the fact that you often had to pay a lot over full sticker price to get one. That extra $1,000 markup (labeled as "market adjustment" or something like that) went straight into the dealer's pocket, above and beyond all the many other markups. On the other hand, everyone, like neighbors and friends, knew you got a high quality product. There was a snob appeal to driving this car..."I'm rich, and I drive the best..." I wanted one at the time, but I refused to pay off the arrogant dealers, and send my money (what little I had) over to Japan. I ended up buying an Altima in 93, built in Tennessee, no greedy markups, lower price, and 150 hp, high hp for the price range at the time.
My very first car was an 87' Prelude Si in all it's automatic glory. Nothing like dropping a few neutral bombs in it and pretending to be Paul Walker every second of the day. Take me back 2002, I've changed!
Man this was like 1993-94, I was born in 1984. My babysitter, Ms Erin had the ugliest 1980ish Honda Accord hatch she rode us around in, I know it was a late 70's/early 80's Accord because it had the 4 round headlights. Man that car was a roach, but it was reliable, 5 speed, that ugly tan, smelled like that old honda smell, hard to describe. Her best friend, who also babysat sometimes rode us around in her mid 80's Prelude, the gen before this one. That was straight up modern in comparison, it was a proper 2 door coupe, it was actually nice. Then we saw her brother's Prelude, an absolutely pristine 1990ish white one. That was really cool until he traded it in on a 1992-1994ish Lexus SC. That car kind of blew my mind at age 10, it looked like nothing I had seen before. Everything was a box, a wedge, square or round headlights, wtf was this shape??? I ended up with one of those cars about 20 years later lol, the 1st gen Lexus SC is still one of my favorite shapes.
I just.... Just had to reply. Words taken from my mouth, I still drive mine today. (The SC) That car rocked the world when it was dropped. Everything else was a box.
My nanny (mum's mum) had and still has this lovely white 91 4WS. I remember being picked up from school a few times when I was little and that's half of why I'm into Hondas. But then one day Nanny and her Prelude went away for almost no reason, and that was because my family just shattered. Being unknowing about life things at the time(I was only 7 or 8) and I just continued on subconsciously knowing that suddenly a huge part of my life was gone seemingly forever... Until life handed me my own keys to make ends meet again and I could find Nanny and her loyal Prelude to say hello with a broader view of the world and a 10-year overdue hug.
Or the simple 12v 2nd gen before it started the upward spiral of bloat, price, and mostly useless feature. In the VTEC era... the Prelude you want is called the Integra GS-R.
The 1991 Si 4WS had the B21A1 which up to that day was the largest 4cl Honda has made, made some great torque for a 4cyl, unfortunately that was also their first venture into FRM cylinder wall sleeves and the damn things are piston rings like crazy. It did however out handle most any car on the road, even newer cars. I had guys in corvettes and Porsche’s struggle to keep up with me on the twisties.
In certain countries you could have both VTEC and 4WS. What I found weird was in Japan they stopped using thinner molding, making the Prelude a luxury car!
Not so but depending on where you live. In Japan where it is tight or in the city this is useful. But like yourself many want more power and the focus was just on power and this feature is not valued by those wanting power. But guess what, after decades European super cars are only just getting the Four Wheel Steering feature in Super Cars and expensive cars. Mercedes first 4ws is the top of the line AMG GT, Porsche is the top of the line 911 and Lamborghini Centenario. Who is behind now and looks like it was not just a Gimmick afterall.
I'm the same way. Mostly 80s hair metal in my car as well. 70s and 90s too. Rush, Boston, Floyd, Jim Croce, Journey, Metallica (old metallica), Guns N Roses, Ozzy, Whitesnake (self titled album), nirvana, Def Leppard (Hysteria), among others. I have a whole like cassette drawer full of cassettes. The ones I listed are just the ones I carry with me.
I had one. Not very fast, at all, but still an unbelievably awesome, solid, reliable, super fun car. I miss it every single day. If I could afford any car in he world, I would find myself another pristine third gen Prelude si, then I would go get my R8. It has aged extremely well.
This is a very beautiful, well-engineered, well-built car. Mine wasn't 4WS, but I was lucky enough to get one, 5 speed manual, that had one elderly owner who drove it gently, took very good care, all service records, and garage kept it. Less than 50,000 miles, still looked and drove like brand new. White with black and charcoal grey interior. I absolutely loved it. Not incredibly powerful but felt REALLY good and solid to drive. Gorgeous, reliable, and very VERY fun. I had to sell it and I miss it every day. If I could afford any car in the world I would find another well kept third gen Prelude si first, then I would get an Audi R8. By far the best car I ever had.
These cars were like $40,000 when new in New Zealand. now they are cheaper than $10,000! These are gorgeous cars! 8:33 What's wrong with 80s american wagons? they are awesome af with their fake ass wood side paneling!
Sold my 89’ Si in January... why am I watching this video. It gave me so many problems... but I miss it so much. I loved that car, it taught me how to heal and toe, and use my momentum to overtake cars 4x my horsepower.
Honda Prelude 4ws.....the official car of the guy that DRESSES LIKE MAX HEADROOM AND IS BANGING A GIRL THAT LOOKS LIKE THE THREE BOOB HOOKER FROM TOTAL RECALL!
I swear to god dude, if you watch a lot of motor sports, especially F1, you become Australian and British. As an American I have started saying oi, mate, yeah nah, cunt, etc. And my ability to do accents has improved as well.
Matt Moran is basically the only one willing to review one for some reason. He gave it a perfect score. No other big car channel will do it. I'll never understand why. I loved my 97.
The issue is you guys have to understand they have to have someone who owns the car be willing to offer them to review it. And it’s not just “hey I have an 01 prelude come review it”. It has to be somewhere close to where they are or where they will be for some reason. There are a lot of factors.
I had an 89 Prelude Si 4WS 5 speed in old man gold. Great car. Unbelievably fun to drive, except interstate travel. At about 70mph, that little 2.0L would buzz at 4k like a dentist drill.
freshfrij0les agreed. Like, it’s a bit terrifying driving one in modern traffic, but it’s a joy on back roads and such (though mine isn’t a 4WS). A big issue with them though is that there are so many unique little parts that aren’t made anymore, so they’re kind of isolated when it comes to repairs. Mine broke down in 2016 with electrical issues, and after awhile I lost interest after just chasing one thing after another, and so it still sits in my garage. If I didn’t have a 5th gen that handles almost as well and is significantly quicker in a straight line I’d probably be more motivated...
One of the coolest cars, when I was growing up. One thing that you didn't mentioned is that 4WS in Honda had 2 functions. 1. In high speed, when the steering wheel is turned less, the rear wheels are steered I. The same direction of the front wheels. It gives the car better agility in high speed lane changing. 2. The 2nd function is what you mentioned. In lower speed, when steering wheel is steered more, the rear wheels are steered the opposite direction of front wheels, which gives you smaller turning radius by as you nicely said "kicking the back of the car out" Well done video
I had the pleasure to own a 5th gen Prelude. Love the simple styling, and looking at this 3rd gen design, I wish Honda would have continued the same essence of simplicity. I don't care how great the new Type R performs, I just can't get over its messy aesthetics.
High speed lane changes with a Prelude 4WS such as weaving through traffic is a crazy fun experience. But true, power is lacking imo even by 80's sports car standards. The Celica GTS or Ford Probe GT were more exciting under the hood.
Meh. I'm not sure what that comparison was about, either. VW was making similar numbers in their own 2.0 16V at the same time. Or maybe we're talking about Japanese cars, in which case '89 is when Subaru started doing crazy shit with turbo EJ20 engines.
Ever think about reviewing the Dodge Rampage? It’s like the molt O’Meal version of the el Camino.. several years too late. Front wheel drive with a 700 pound capacity, or being a two seater approximately two Walmart scooter jockeys. All the structural integrity of a third grade paper mache Fever dream . And yet... There’s one for sale not too far from me, Had me thinkin what in God’s name is that ugly unfortunate 80”s trash pale kids knockoff? I want it. were only made for a few years and are a dying breed. I dunno, there’s a certain charm to it. Speaks to the underdog in me.

2:27 "It's VTEC for steering."
There's literally no better analogy than this.
i think you just single-handedly drove up the price of these things world wide.
This is definitely making me want to put mine back together. It’s been sitting for a couple years with electrical issues

am i the only one bothered by co-mingling the term "4 wheel drive" and "4 wheel steer", 2 very different things!! if you want a 4WD prelude add a rear differential, transfer case and lockers.
Wouldn’t sure lockers would be a great idea in this, especially with the 4WS
Had an '89 4WS. Lived in ID, AZ, CO, and MO. Both AZ and CO required a new title when I got the licence there, and both screwed up the title by calling it 'Prelude 4WD SI'.🤡

I feel sorry that your dad was a jerk, but I can understand because when I was a kid and talk of the dodo get viper or the Honda fast cars my dad was a jerk to saying,” you could get the same speed and same gear set for less if you get a Chevy Silverado.”
I just stopped and stared at him, didn’t say anything and was thinking in my head,” do you know how damn stupid you sound right now. Do you ?”
But he never liked any other car that was not a Chevy masterpiece to him.

Psychoboyaw. Nobody cares.
How come you didn't mention that at roadspeeds the rear wheels turn WITH the front, not opposite, for lane changing?
I was waiting for that. At least they sort of showed it.
That sounds like a dented rear quarter panel waiting to happen.
How does that work with a fully mechanical system though? Does that steering gearbox on the rear axle shift into reverse via vacuum line?
The only time 4WS wasn’t desirable to me was in slushy snow conditions as it made counter steer corrections feel unnatural.
yeah that lane changing mechanical crab-drive feature is pretty cool

Only had to replace a thermostat, an alternator, and the timing belt. To date, my most favorite car out of the 10 other vehicles I've owned since 2008. Still remember the VIN number by heart.

I want one.
Oooohhhhh a 4ws prelude how coo-
Automatic eh?
Close. Almost cool.
If it was manual, some yobbo would have wrapped it around a tree 20 years ago.
And he complains about it being slow.
That slush box was extra slushy.
But it’s.... sew fahn seeeh!
oh boy, I had one of these with a manual gearbox, and believe me... it was SLOW.
I owned 2 can confirm slush box.

And since then all cars are bubbly an bulbous and not square.
I’d give anything to have cars that didn’t look like they came from the 90’s
'70s and '80s, not 70's and 80's
Prous 1988 4WS owner here!! My favorite car of all time, have owned it for 10 years! Its a dream come true
I saw one of these cars in a Lowes parking lot, it was in the original yellow color. Looked pretty sick.
Oh yea me too
i can relate
It's cool, but try my '92 Honda Prelude Si 4WS MANUAL. The only way to experience the prelude before VTEC appeared
Or the simple 12v 2nd gen before it started the upward spiral of bloat, price, and mostly useless feature. In the VTEC era... the Prelude you want is called the Integra GS-R.
Bartonovich52 prelude vtec 4th gen kills the GSR in every Measurements of performance.

Here in yurp, the Prelude had 150hp, and i bet a manual transmission makes it feel less sluggish too
The Bootleg Garage It does. I’ve owned two, one with an auto and one with a manual. There’s definitely a difference
the manual is still slow, but it feels very... responsive. It's a snappy little engine with a decent amount of torque and very tight gearing
freshfrij0les agreed. If I didn’t have a 5th gen that handles almost as well and is significantly quicker in a straight line I’d probably be more motivated...
this car is more beautiful than Nicole Kidman in her 20s.
Wowzers bubba,, I dunno if I'd go quite that far... . But then again, I'd bet it puts out better than Nicole Kidman at any age
Hell yeah finally you review a Lude! I daily a 5th gen handles like a dream almost feels like rwd car hardly any understeer
In lower speed, when steering wheel is steered more, the rear wheels are steered the opposite direction of front wheels, which gives you smaller turning radius by as you nicely said "kicking the back of the car out"
Well done video

Kyoto-Moto it's not 1600 or 1800cc. It's 4AGEcc. Git learnt, yo.
