Besides the Autobahn and the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, how many places are there where you have the option of driving over 100 mph? How many speeding tickets and reckless driving charges are you willing to rack up? Here in the US, the highest speed limit is 85 mph (the Texas Highway 130 toll road), and it has been over 20 years since the Montanabahn ended. Just about any car you see on the road today has enough horsepower to go 85 mph, even an old Buick, an old minivan, or a low-end Kia. The Malaise Era Chevettes that shook at speeds over 55 mph, the Brougham land yachts with the big V8 engines that put out only 120 hp, and the Yugos with the 20-second 0-60 times are long gone. Back in 1991, there was still a national 65 mph speed limit and thus even less reason to drive over 100 mph. Any car other than the very slowest Malaise Era beaters had the horsepower for 65 mph. Oh, and if you still wanted a fast and sporty car back in 1991, there were much cheaper choices available than the BMW 850i available. There were Firebirds, Trans Ams, Camaros, Mustangs, Acuras, Lexuses, Supras, Nissan Z-cars, and Honda Preludes. All of these cars were not only cheaper to buy but to maintain as well.
I saw 1 guy driving this every day on my daily commute like 10yrs ago. I always wanted to have one of these, I don't care about 300hp or whatnot, I love how it looks!
V12s from similar cars like the Jaguar and Benz were also not rockets like people expect them to be. I believe the purpose at the time of having 12 cylinders was not so much for 0-60 times and racing but luxurious silkiness, effortless and graceful response that makes you feel like a king being at the helm of something truly exclusive, a domesticated beast.
Gearbox and lack of grip kills the 0-60. The Merc s600 had more than 400 hp back in early 90s. Do a kickdown on the autobahn and you will sail past most modern cars (in a 30 year old car)... Btw the 850 csi (manual gear) did 0-60 in 5.7 sec - not bad when you consider the weight and technology at the time.
I think the look of the car has an appearance that matches what it can do. It looks reserved while still communicating that it could very calmly whoop your ass.

I still think about that car every now and again wondering if I could have made that v12 make it to 200k or not or how long I could I go before I get arrested for doing 150mph pulls on the highway. I should've bought it, even if it would blown up in half a year. Only reason I didn't buy it was "I NEED A MANUAL". My parents eventually forced me to get a 02 Buick regal LS it wasn't even the fast supercharged GS my inner dude bro died a bit when they handed me those keys. WHY DONT YOU LOVE ME SUSIE
Idk consider yourself lucky you didnt buy it, the insurance would have been outrageously, not to mention premium fuel prices, and chances are you wouldnt have the money to properly maintain it so you would have destroyed whats becoming a rare collectible car. Also for 3k no way you could have even made it home, it must have had so many issues at that price it would be a money pit for someone so young. Sad your parents wouldnt let you get manual though, thats alright the buick will make a great daily and you can get a manual sports car later.
It takes a lot to blow up the V12 and make it unreliable for starters it’s N/A means more reliable also it’s based off 6 cylinder engines so even better.. it would’ve been fine and pus if it made it to 160k it means it can probably do 200k

As an expat Australian, I understand. BMWs are extremely overpriced in Australia so when an Australian moves to America and sees BMWs at the prices they are (especially the used ones) they’re good value.
As an Australian, the car market in Australia is pathetic. Which is one of the reasons why cars are so much expensive here compared to the states. It was only 2016 when we officially started getting Mustangs, and only recently Cameros. The Australian carmarket is small compared to the states.
The 850i one of the few BMW I have ever wanted to own besides the M1 (the first one the E26) I was surprised you didn't mention the $10,000 factory wheel package option, the only option for the car. An M8 variant would have been a site to be hold (I would be interested in the project goals for the M8 they would have tried to achieve. )
BMW 850i, for the company exec who rawdogs his secretary but when goes back to his wife he leaves a note for her early in the morning with a 100 dollar bill attached to "forget about it and dont talk about it during work".
I remember the first time I saw a BMW 840. At the time, no one put 4-piston calipers on their cars unless you were Porsche or Ferrari. This car had them. It was then I realized that BMW was indeed the greatest car company ever... until the Bangle era and then I said goodbye. Favorite BMW's have to be the E38 7-series, this 8-series, and the Z8.
Fwiw nissan and Ford had 4 pot brakes on their sport's cars in the 80s, my 6cyl skyline made more power and torque than this while weighing less with better handling. I'd race one into 3 figures gladly, would be waiting a while for it though.
BMW literally joined two V-6 engines for this car. Unfortunately, this model is prone to oil leaks. One advantage, these cars don't have the VANOS system.
It has many gaskets and they were made of paper at the time. If you replace all of those with better sealing modern products it will solve that problem.

I had a 1991 750IL. Yes the V12 was not fast off the line but would cruise all day at 125 MPH without a sweat. It was ahead of its time which is why they had so many electronic issues. The M70 V12 was a beautiful motor!!!
Yesterday I saw the new BMW 8 Series in Brown. It looked like a larger 6 series coupe. There's something about the old 8 Series that the new 8 series doesn't have...I dunno why I feel like that tho.
The old 8 feels special because its unique in the bimmer line up, there isnt any 6 serie during 90-99 when the old 8serie is sold. now however the 8 and the 6 are being sold at the same time, so the new 8serie doesnt feel the same way.

e39 was claimed as "Worlds best car" and for a reason: Quiet, comfy yet sporty and pretty fast. And that desing is still one of the best
I avoid them too. But my E36 325is is probably the best looking, most fun car I've had so far. I never understood why BMW called itself the ultimate driving machine until I owned one.
@@RevoltingSnakeman99 so are bmws worth it?
@@malachilatroy I can't speak for all of them but mine definitely isn't. I've saved a ton of money fixing it myself and it is the best looking and best sounding car I've owned. Despite that, I can't justify recommending a BMW to anyone who isn't either independently wealthy or mechanically inclined. Fun yes, will bury you yes. So are BMWs worth it? I wouldn't say so, and I own one.
I see you’re a sonic fan.
Most of Roman's songs r rcr lyrics over game music lol

thank you for this comment. i was singing it in my head going thats a video game i own and have played a lot! but i cant remember what the hell it is... then now i know its green hill zone!!
Kudos to Roman for honoring the new live action Sonic movie
9:55 "With a CD player filled with nothing but Dream Theater" Nice one.
I while searching for my first car to buy when I was 17. I found one of these on craigslist for only $3k it had 160k miles, and an average 160k mile BMW interior I knew it would be a horrible idea, and that I shouldn't do it butttt I really wanted it like a 15 year old boy really wants to see Susie's nutter butter.
But hey some people get like a slow honda civic as forst car sp what u got now is pretty sweet or was idont know😂
Hahaha nice comment how old are you now btw ? (I'm 17 now so I'm about to learn the lesson of compromise ) 😅😅
@@aidenp5768 the engine isn't the problem it's the early 90s electronics. Dashboard lights for days. Not to mention the inevitable timing chain that would need to be replaced. I can't even guess how much that would cost. Damn near the value of the car I bet
It is 1:00AM on a Sunday, study for my finals or watch the new RCR?

More video game inspired tracks from the Roman, yes please!
The 12 cylinder GTs, Ferrari aside, was a small club of BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar and all of those cars were quirky, even the SL600. But, it was the ultimate status symbol of it's time.

I'm not sure a BMW 850 V12 is a regular car
Regular luxury coupe 😬

I don’t know what they go for now but when I was a teenager back in the late 90s they were super cheap.

This is the first I've heard of this car, it's absolutely beautiful.
That HP has to be underrated.
Love the Roman in this one. Would actually buy an album of Sonic-covers
I didn't know they were produced in such little numbers! I never see them on the road, so that makes sense.
As an expat Australian, I understand. BMWs are extremely overpriced in Australia so when an Australian moves to America and sees BMWs at the prices they are (especially the used ones) they’re good value.
American cars are even more overpriced here, a C5 corvette goes for like 100k in Australia.
BMW RHD is not as big a deal as there are a lot of UKDM models.
An M8 variant would have been a site to be hold (I would be interested in the project goals for the M8 they would have tried to achieve. )
I'm an owner and this is the funniest, most honest overview of the E31 🤣🤣🤣 well done.
Wow uploading at 4 am, I cant possibly, explain why I'm awake but this was worth it.
BMW 850i, for the company exec who rawdogs his secretary but when goes back to his wife he leaves a note for her early in the morning with a 100 dollar bill attached to "forget about it and dont talk about it during work".
@TheGreenpiston Of Course not, he would have owned a maybach
At the very least a Phaeton
I remember the first time I saw a BMW 840. At the time, no one put 4-piston calipers on their cars unless you were Porsche or Ferrari. This car had them. It was then I realized that BMW was indeed the greatest car company ever... until the Bangle era and then I said goodbye. Favorite BMW's have to be the E38 7-series, this 8-series, and the Z8.
I owned 2 E30 3 series and an E38 7. Awesome cars, miss the Aluminum V8 in my 740i.
Fwiw nissan and Ford had 4 pot brakes on their sport's cars in the 80s, my 6cyl skyline made more power and torque than this while weighing less with better handling. I'd race one into 3 figures gladly, would be waiting a while for it though.
What's the "Bangle era" referring to?
The dream theater reference at the very end made me shed a tear.
Been a RCR fan for awhile now and somehow missed this video until now. It figures it'd be the one where you mentioned my favorite band Dream Theater
One of the most beautiful cars ever made. Unfortunately, it has the reputation of being a pimp car here in Germany.

BMW literally joined two V-6 engines for this car. Unfortunately, this model is prone to oil leaks. One advantage, these cars don't have the VANOS system.
It has many gaskets and they were made of paper at the time. If you replace all of those with better sealing modern products it will solve that problem.

Lovin' the Green Hill Zone cameo in Roman's intro :)
When I was stationed in Germany the "Lemon Lot" on Ramstein AFB featured 3 of these at any one time for $3-5k...I wanted one ever since C. Van Tune wrote a comparison of the 1994 Z/28 and the 850CSI in Motor Trend...
No way! I never saw any unfortunately. Only a couple 90s SLs and our old Volvo S40.
I had a 1991 750IL. Yes the V12 was not fast off the line but would cruise all day at 125 MPH without a sweat. It was ahead of its time which is why they had so many electronic issues. The M70 V12 was a beautiful motor!!!
Whooaa!!! A Dream Theater reference! I think this one of the best looking BMWs ever made.
twin turbo this and the stock V12 is good for 800hp +
Seriously. Awesome engine.
gotta be carefull ... nothing can probably suck more then a front heavy car !
Yesterday I saw the new BMW 8 Series in Brown. It looked like a larger 6 series coupe. There's something about the old 8 Series that the new 8 series doesn't have...I dunno why I feel like that tho.
The new one isn't sleek, perhaps?
Probably the lack of pop up headlights 😂
The old 8 feels special because its unique in the bimmer line up, there isnt any 6 serie during 90-99 when the old 8serie is sold.
now however the 8 and the 6 are being sold at the same time, so the new 8serie doesnt feel the same way.
ToyGTone same with most modern BMW’s I think
It has excess.
This is one of the most beautyful cars ever made in automotive history!!
Yo the footsteps during the muffler scene show real dedication to the craft
By far my favourite bmw
This was something really special back in the day, the new one seems to be "just" an upgraded 6 series...
Still looks good today
This is one of those cars that if I had the opportunity to get one I wouldn’t think twice on it. I know it’ll be a nightmare in repairs but it’s one of the most beautiful cars ever built from the Germans to me. I used to own a 525i e34 and although it was great a two door coupe from this era with a V12 in the front is just what it’s all about.
