  • I found a few movies while looking through storage and made me think about the lack of films available on streaming platforms and why having a library is important for film fans.

If you have a collection of media that most people don't, such as LaserDisc or something else, perhaps you can talk about that, especially differences and exclusive content only available in that format. Physical media may be dying but I feel it will become huge at one point and get a revival like retro gaming has.
I remember when the games that people are seeking now were dirt cheap towards the end of their supported cycle. So many people getting rid of the ones they had and the new ones in the stores were not selling as people were moving on to the next big consoles and games. And now those same unsold games and consoles are much sought after and are very expensive. I had a store filled with unsold sealed games and systems that I wish I still had right now. Those things are selling for so much money currently that I'd make enough to buy a house, a car, a boat, and probably never have to work again, no joke! The sealed Nintendo stuff alone that I had would make me rich!
There's also the revival of vinyl records, which in my opinion is just for pure nostalgia despite what people say. I see new ones in stores and people are buying them despite being an antiquated format by todays standards! You would think the format would be dead now but nope. For these reasons I think certain physical media such as DVDs will become sought after again (it's the oldest video format that still looks great and has many movies and shows not available online).

VHS and other older media forms still worth collecting? Blu ray/DVD case outgassing, real problem or easy fix? Solutions to running out of space?

Do you think collectors are addicts? Also I have around 600 dvds (I know I know it's rubbish lol) but one thing I noticed is that I have around 40 or 50 movies I constantly go back to and have done since I was kid. Obviously different titles have been added as I got older but most of my discs I have watched once and will never again. I just think that's an interesting subject. I hope I explained yhat correctly and maybe it's just me

@findlay1arches collectors do have an addiction, we want every movie. It's something that happened to me and took me a while to get out of. 600 is a decent amount. I'd say its probably an ideal size for a Collector. Myself, I was in a an employment position where I had free reign over what I wanted and I got everything. I spent a lot of money on them and it was an on going trend. Luckily, it's a healthy-ish addiction unless a big pile falls on you.

@@CineApocalypseOnlinehaha yes make sure your not buried under dvds. That would suck. Out of all your movies. Over the course of 3 years how many movies do you think you would watch more than once

2 reasons why I decided to keep my physical collection. No.1 I bought Halloween on Prime and they later pulled it. No.2 they change the films when they don't match current day politics.

It's all a big joke, it's deceiving, and just downright inferior to owning the DVD/ Blue Rays. No dependence on Wifi, no buffering, glitches, or what if the site is just down? It's nonsense. I don't subscribe to ANY streaming services and I get along just fine. Really, Internet Archive has tons of things also and no ads, and no having to subscribe and pay a fortune. And they have way more Christian movies as well.

I couldn't live without my physical movies and games. It's so much nicer to see the cases displayed on shelves etc.

I completely agree about physical media. Especially now since a lot of it is super cheap to buy. Streaming services would be the permanent norm if they didn't remove or cancel shows and movies. Licensing issues will always be a problem, which makes the availability of many types of online content unstable. Even free videos on TH-cam can disappear just because the person who posted or created it no longer wanted to have it accessible. Online media is like dealing with someone on constant mood swing. You never know what's going to happen next. To me that is a major turn off and makes physical media really shine. That is the main reason I don't use these paid internet based entertainment services at all. It's much better to just make back ups and digitize your physical media library of music, movies, and TV shows. This way you can watch or listen to the content whenever your want and don't have to worry if a movie/show/album on your streaming service will be available when you want to watch/listen it.
I recommend the following ways to back up and digitize:
For DVDs and Blu-rays, rip and convert to an MKV file that retains the chapters, subtitles, and different audio tracks (you can also omit the ones you don't want). You can also copy your disc to a DVD-R or BD-R and watch that on your DVD/Bluray player and keep the original discs safely stored away (store them properly to avoid disc rot). I just recently digitized someone's DVD collection of 207 movies and they are super happy.
For VHS tapes, especially for home recordings, digitize them to an MPEG or MP4 file using a capture device. And if you're up for it, put the VHS capture on a DVD (or even VCD) with menus and chapters! I do this for people as well. If you captured it correctly, it looks and sounds exactly as it does on the tape. And no need to rewind after viewing, no mold build up, can be played countless times with out risk of damaging/eating the tape, can have chapters to skip to any part of the video you want eliminating fast forwarding of the tape, and you can keep original VHS tape stored away safely (keep them in a dry environment or a build up of mold will pay you a visit).
For audio cassette tapes, unless you have a tape that has never received a release on a better format, such as CD or online service such as Amazon music, there's no need to digitize these as there are better options available (unless it's a personal recording). There are tape players that can connect to your PC through USB to help you digitize your music/recordings. I do this for people who really want it to MP3 files and/or CD, AVCD, or DVD. It gives people their large audio cassette collection in a more convenient format, takes up much less space physically, and can be played in their car or any CD capable player. And just like VHS, no need to rewind/fast forward after listening, no mold build up, can be played countless times with out risk of damaging/eating the tape, can have selectable tracks, have artwork or music videos (AVCD or DVD only) and chapters to skip to any part of the video you want eliminating fast forwarding of the tape, and you can store away or get rid of the cassette.
You can always make your own physical copy if you REALLY want it on a CD-R, DVD-R, SD Card, ect.... or even pressed discs (there are some companies that offer this service). I make custom compilations for people all the time (even of TH-cam content) on either CD, VCD, AVCD, or DVD.

Fantastic video, as always - keep up the good work! There seems to be a growing movement at the moment that's talking about the importance of keeping physical media alive. We are now getting to the point where young kids won't even know what a DVD is, which is pretty depressing. I even work with people who haven't seen a VHS before 😂 I think you've hit the nail on the head with streaming services. Yes they are convenient and allow access to things that you wouldn't normally think to spend money on, but in the end it all comes back to ownership and control. I've lost count of the amount of times I've wanted to watch something specific, only to find it's been pulled from streaming.
As a games collector myself, I'm fighting a similar battle against the move to digitisation - people are finding out now with things like the Wii and 3DS E-shops closing, that buying digital, whilst convenient, isn't actually buying. They could pull the rights at any time.
I'm curious, as there's a lot of talk on the web about disc rot and media degradation over time. What are your thoughts on that?
Finally, props for the Felix the cat movie - you unlocked a memory and I went straight on eBay to buy a copy for a couple of quid 😂
Keep fighting the good fight sir!

Netflix began as a rental service and it still is. Any feature the customer pays for is time limited. So, they can pull the film/series, edit the film/series, increase pricing, etc. at will.

I do like streaming. But I'll never get rid of my DVDs. Even if they just sit and collect dust most of the time. I love to collect. I have hundreds of DVDs and I've been starting to buy Blu-ray. I have about 30 of those.😊

It is good to keep physical media in case internet goes out or cannot afford it. I also don't like when movies are censored or altered to be politically correct, this day in age.

Who would have thought giving all the power to giant, streaming mega-corporations would result in the genericification and blandness of film? In S10Ep20 of The Simpson "Gone with the Wind" for seniors gag was once a joke, now it's a dystopian reality.

Hi I've just subscribed and yeah I 100% agree. I use both digital and physical options but I prefer physical media hands down because I like to own it and it looks great on a shelf. Plus when I visit my local charity shops, I can buy DVD's or Bluray's for my collection, which makes it fun imo especially for blind buys. Btw great collection mate 👍🔥

I started collecting in the days of 5 tv channels, because after a movie came on the telly, you wouldn't see it again for several years. VHS was godsend back then. Digital media, if you can keep a downloaded copy, is great now, but feels cheaper in comparison to a case you can read and hold in your hand. Alas space is at a premium. Nowadays I buy old stuff, cult stuff, foreign movies and old tv box sets.

I agree streaming has its advantages but at the end of the day they do nothing to preserve the art form of cinema. Physical is just better for that! I will pay attention to original streaming content that I want to watch but as far as the rest that isn’t on physical media, it might as well not exist lol 😂

A couple of rare classic films (in my opinion) are- 7 FACES OF DR LOU (an all formats version NOT region coded) & JACK THE GIANT KILLER, both of which are likely to get deleted if they arent already. there's also BRTHER'S GRIMM (the 60s film of course NOT that boring nasty arty remake) that surprisingly IS released on BL RAY BUT not on region 2 I don't think. All films that arent likely to be available for streaming, or if they are it won't be for long.
