I remember seeing video stores dying and feeling a creeping moroseness. I wasn't ready for those to go away but most people jumped on streaming services and left me and video stores behind. I felt alienated in my own country, like culture shock in the place you're from.
@danielstockley5631 I wouldn't be completely surprised to see the video rental store coming back in fashion. Not unmasked like it used to be but more than boutique but not an everyday thing. With my giant collection I thought about opening a video stores part of my retirement. I bet there's plenty of Gen xers that would come to a video store and pay a couple bucks to rent a movie.

I’m so glad I kept all my dvd’s, cd’s and lp’s. Although I own plenty of movies on digital, I started buying dvd’s again as the price of digital is outrageous just for a file which you don’t really own.
This video was very informative for someone who doesn’t know much about physical media and the perspective of how streaming has changed the way we consume media.
@@erikamccreary2614 also streaming services usually require you to subscribe to their 20 dollar plus plan to see 4K. 4K DVDs are usually the same price
I love physical media. I’m the kind of person who likes to own everything. I have a number of CDs, cassette tapes and vinyl for music. I also have some DVDs, VHS tapes and Blu rays. As a 34-year old American, I am so used to having physical media around since I grew up with it. Every time I hear about a streaming service owning something and people using it, I get so sad because you’re throwing away money on something you’ll never own. There may be a few pros to having things digital, but it’s always better to have some collection of music and videos for you to own and watch anytime. I think all old video games are cool too, which I still have. Anyway thanks for sharing with all of us.
I love collecting physical media. I've always have since I was little. It's much better than digital. Great video by the way and keep up the good work! :)
You had some excellent points on why physical media is still valid and perhaps always will be since you regain control, time, money and peace of mind not obsessing with subscriptions trying to make sure you are getting your moneys worth being a slave to your television or computer.
The worst part of digital media is the lack of control by the consumer. A digital company can go under and you can no longer access your playlist. I try to buy physical media and then rip them. That’s legal but companies are forcing many to pirate. That’s a shame.
I am glad that more major artists release their albums also on audio casettes. I buy cd, vinyl and audio tape versions of my favorite artists. With good tape equipmemt and tape it can sound almost as good as CD.
I got a walkman last October and I haven’t looked back! All my music popular and obscure are all on tape now and can’t be taken from me at a moments notice! Also I love the analog quality of the music, an experience you can’t get when your music is trapped behind pixels on a screen
@@NerdCrave I wonder if tapes and tape players will be a common sighting in the next couple years as streaming services become worse and worse, what do you think?
I really like this commentary, the subscription-based economy is so unfortunate. It's sad that even the "DVR" features of the streaming TV services aren't really recording your feed, just fetching the episode on a server somewhere for later viewing and can be revoked whenever they lose the rights. Physical media is comforting and focused enjoyment, digital is fleeting and overwhelming. Great video!!
As a side note to another reason for kicking digital and saving money, and this is the case for where I live in small town USA. The public library has just about everything you could want physically, be it PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, DVD, Blue rays, audio books they have it all... Me personally I tend to use it as a "try video game" Option and if I like it I'll buy it.
I have CDs and DVDs. I have lately started to collect DVDs again. I listen to a lot of classical music and have purchased some in FLAC files. I find myself browsing though my CDs to listen to something more often than going through my computer files. I like the process of putting the CD in the player. It seems more rewarding to me. I also have lots of vinyl. Enjoy your music and movies anyway you like though. I like the choice.
im being physical and less digital include the phone,,my life were improved and happy..im not stress abt current event because i dont know what happen right freaking now to worry about..i dicthed out all of my social media..and focus more on physically including bluray, wired headphone, radios, cd player in car, newspaper and comics, album cd, exercising, going out myself to get my things and foods not online..i am happy to be real and touchable
It’s a real grassroots movement right now. I actually did the same thing. I permanently deleted my Twitter account and removed all other social media off my phone. I would delete Facebook too, but there’s 20 years of photos and all that kind of stuff there that I don’t wanna lose But it’s off my phone now and I’m not looking back
@@NerdCrave i still have social media but i dont open them..unless i really want to check on my friend rarely or upload stories rarely..just thats it, no scrolling, no discussion on useless matter and so on.
Excellent video. I've held on to using an iPod for the last several years. Sometimes I make compilations/ playlists for it and typically I try not to make them go over the running time of a full length CD, 80 minutes. It helps with quality control and not losing track of time.
I’ve been collecting CDs for only a few years, but only recently has it been a more regular activity for me. Now hovering at about 250 disc, I’m in the process of ripping the tracks as FLAC and enjoying them in “hi-res”. Great commentary and I completely agree!
And that is why i have in the last 3 years, taken the control back in to my life, no more grayed out songs if i buy the cd, and no one can change or mess with a movie if i buy the DVD or buy the book if it is not 'pc' enough 😀 Ok, i have to buy ssd's or harddrives to put the musik on, and then to my smartphone, but i am in control. And book does something to a room, when you have some books on a shelf, and every bood you have read is an anchievement in it selfs 😀
I agree that music is probably the most accessible type of physical media you can collect because there's several types of formats/mediums through which you can listen. I've found too that CDs in particular are pretty easy to collect for cheap, and can be played on several different devices that I own. What I really like about physical media in general is that you can access it at any time without needing to worry about having an internet connection, and you also get a physical piece of art that you can display in your home/extra goodies that you don't get through just streaming it. Like the cover art on a music CD and the booklets that often times have lyrics to the songs and photos, or DVD movies that come with extra features.
I am an advocate for physical media, especially for children. You bring up great points about attention span. That being said, I do love Tubi and Pluto. Also, that is a cool Walkman. You are a cool dude.
streaming was cool and all for a while but i miss waking up to the shrek dvd menu blasting at 2am, or hearing the ps2 start up noise and watching the intro to my favorite games over and over and over
my cd collection is my most prized possession. i love to think about the fact that im physically surrounded by the things i love and that represent me. digital media? does not essentially exist. if you disappeared, no one would ever know what you liked.
I have cassettes that I recorded 50 years ago while sitting on a mountain top ( only a mountain in name,) that still work and they work fine, also I have DVDs and CDs thay I have had for about 20 year that to look at the playing surface you would think I had bought it brand new that morning, I love physical media because it is there when ever I want it. I have over 300 DVDs and I would not get rid of any of them. Cheers.
I'm 42 and absolutely love and agree with everything stated here. The most recent tech I use for entertainment is a Samsung S2 8" tablet that I've had for like a decade already and an iPod 160G classic for mp3 music. Also have a CD player in my 2013 Toyota and go thrifting on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I will never ever have a spotify account and still buy physical games as well. I don't do the extra downloads bells and whistles and refuse to subscribe to all these ridiculous services. Physical media will make a comeback when these corporations get so greedy they price out everyone.
I've never stopped buying either. Not a fan of streaming services telling me what I should listen to or watch. I still like to discover artists and pay attention. Some things are hidden gems as they don't exist online and others are just hard to have legitimately unless you pay monthly. No one has that much time to consume everything.
Im currently waiting for my "new" 5th gen Ipod classic! So excited to own my music again and add audiobooks to my collection. Also, that line about how you used to read a book a week...i feel that one! I used to be an avid reader. I think modern tech has stolen that passion from me and i want to reclaim that.
Very interesting and well put 👏🏽. I’m 50 so I had the blessing of living through the 80’s and 90’s which are the two decades I remember most fondly. Like you said, it’s really annoying when I watch movies with my older daughter because she’s constantly on the phone, then asking me about parts of the movie she missed because she was texting or something 😡 I rarely ask her to watch a movie together nowadays because of that.
Laws should be passed, that game developers should be forced to make games that dont require Internet. Physical media is still is better then subscription service, no ads and they cant take it away.
Well, I believe there’s a place in the market for online only games, but I think if your game is being released for a console, it should operate on that console without any external input
The one thing you failed to mention is the high level of censorship being experienced at the moment. Movies with great chunks taken out in case they offend. Same is starting to happen to books.
@@mikey9836 Yep it's portable.. well the size of a pancake. :D I think it would read data ahead as sort of a buffer. if you were running, these things would make the laser skip reading the data.
I’m 18 (turning 19 tomorrow) and have been collecting physical media since I was 16, so far I have many blu rays and cds that I love and it’s been way better than to constantly pay for a subscription that may or may not have what I’m looking for!
With music, id say buying a FLAC is enough than buying a CD, but maybe Vinyl for novelty is good, because audio now a days is quite easy to archive everywhere, although for games and movies that goes from 5-100gb depending on how long the movie or big the game is, I definitely agree that it needs to be in physical form since they are the only media form that is hard to archive compare to audio.
@@NerdCrave Guilty as charged although I rather call it tactical buying ^_^ If an album was released on CD I buy it on CD, if it was released on vinyl I buy the LP. But if the master is better on either one that medium wins. Oh, and if a release is WAY more expensive on one medium but still sounds fine on the other I buy the cheaper but fin one. CD wins this 'logic' quite often :-)
1:43 "Miracle man, GOT BUSTED!!!" 🤣🤣🤣 I had to say that lol! Getting serious now, I totally agree with you about online media and information totally distracting us and shortening our attention span, I'm a victim of that myself and I waste so much time and don't get very far with my project endeavors! Enjoyed your video, good insight on how physical media is still relevant today.
I usually go to my library’s sale once a month to buy books. After watching videos like this I started buying dvds and music cds at the sale. I’ve accumulated a tiny collection of classics from my childhood and movies I’ve loved in college. A couple weeks ago I was able to get some library discards for 25 cents each. Thanks for the video!
I am also the type of guy that likes to have separate dedicated devices to do various thinks. I have a separate watch, alarm clock, game consoles, I don't use my phone to pay for stuff, etc. most everyone likes to use their phone for literally everything, but I don't like to do that.
I'm going to dig out my Sony portable MD recorder and my Aiwa 'boombox' personal cassette/radio recorder. (sadly, the LCD on the aiwa is a bit dodgy and I will probably use a bluetooth transmitter. Not bothered about CD-Audio, but do keep a collection of DVD-Video and Blu-Rays because many 'arty' films are not available on streaming or are suddenly taken off.
oh, PS. You can easily make your own TV schedule when re-watching all your box-sets. We made X-Files last a year. Similarly, DS9 and now Voyager etc. OR we have a Hitchcock and DePalma 'season', or a 70s season - Play Misty... or French connection etc. Alternative language films are good for avoiding being distracted. - You can't look at your smartphone if you're reading the subtitles or trying to pick out words you recognise in Mandarin/Cantonese, German, Hebrew etc etc.
Hah! I was just thinking about my modded consoles\MiSTer just as you mentioned them. The analysis paralysis is real. Same with my media server to an extent. Things were more straight forward when i have less choices. But I also really enjoy collecting.
I love music but I've been getting so overwhelmed by everything being on my phone the past few months so I bought a modded iPod from marketplace and have been slowly building up a physical cd library again whilst also putting all my podcasts and audiobooks on it and it's been great! My local charity shops charge 25p-50p (around 33-66 cents I believe) for second hand CDs that are always in great condition so I just go in weekly to see what I can find and have managed to find some of my favourite albums in them. I also buy DVDS from them and they're usually 5 for £1 which is such a good deal but the staff always tell me they struggle to sell their physical media even with those insanely low prices which is so sad
For those of us in the know, it’s a really wonderful situation being able to get all the stuff for so cheap. Enjoy it. Well it lasts because like all collectables markets it will get picked up eventually and get super expensive.
I actually do have all of my old CDs and DVDs, some of my older video games (my brother has the rest of them), some of my old Audiotapes, and some of my childhood VHS tapes. I have an iPod that's disconnected from our WiFi and I use it for music mostly, but I occasionally connect it to do updates and to check Facebook if I'm in the middle of a conversation with a friend from the U.S. or something like that. Otherwise I leave Facebook to my laptop. I'm interested that those Star Trek Audiobooks you showed in this video are all double tapes. I have the Audiobook for the Star Trek TOS novel, The Kobayashi Maru on tape, and it's a single tape, two sided Audiobook.
I’m trying to figure out exactly how many of them were made. If you look me up on X (twitter) I can share more photos of my collection so far. I have about 15, and about half of them are single tapes and the rest are double
@@NerdCrave I left X just before the changeover from Twitter. I just thought it was interesting that some of the Star Trek Audiobooks were on two tapes, not just one since I have only ever owned the one TOS Audiobook and I got it brand new in 1990.
Personally I prefer physical over digital media (with some minor exceptions). Still have my original yellow and black Panasonic Shock Wave cassette deck to this day along with my cassette and CD collection. I started collecting vinyl records a couple of years ago after my dad gave me a newer Yamaha turn table that he won at a golf tournament that he didn't really want (thanks dad) as well as bunch of records he had duplicates of.
For most of the ps4 generation I bought most of my games digital. I’ve really come around on owning your discs, and now try to purchase all single player games physical. Also really enjoy blu rays and 4K over streaming quality. Crazy how much better a Blu Ray is than streaming “4K”
Now I want to find a cassette player! When I was a little girl in the 90s and early 00s I would always rent audiobook cassettes from my library that my mom would pop into the car on long drives. I had a little player I would listen to story books on while I did my chores. I can’t believe until this moment I’ve forgotten about that!
I started buying cd's and vinyl (and planning dvd’s as well) not because of trend but because of hate that there are A LOT of music and movies constantly disappearing from my streaming services accounts. Even something you “bought” can disappear. Its like someone always messes with “my” library. And there is also A LOT of movies are plain unavailable to watch because of my “region”. Fuck all of this. It either pirating or this. P.S. I wish minidisk would come back, but oh well
I had to downsize mu livin space and sold my 600 vinyl albums years ago. Some of them i wont ever replace... $$$$ I have my FLAC files of those albums...at least
Physical media started dying out when Netflix and all this other crap came out!! My problem is you not only have to pay the monthly fee for the streaming service but also wifi!! After paying for wifi and Netflix or whatever you’re paying a cable bill!! Another problem is you have to have 3-4 different services just to be able to watch what you want!! As long as you take care of it physical media is forever where as streaming isn’t!! I cut my cable wifi and streaming services and now I just have antenna tv dvds and blu rays! I started collecting dvds a few years ago and it’s so fun to collect and get different stuff!! I buy off a guy in the neighborhood he usually sells to me for 50 cents a movie depending on what it is!! I also have a burner on my computer and can burn anything I want but it’s just nice to have the official copy instead of a burned dvd
This was a great take on this topic. My experience is very similar, and I highly prefer physical media again and have been doing so for the past decade already. So, my digital-only life didn't even last that long, only a few short years, actually.
ok you almost have me convinced to get into cassettes again lol so who knows if I'll get a player again soon. I do prefer CDs, and keep a giant wallet of them that we found for next to nothing. I also got a modest record collection going. As far as movies go, I always tell people to keep DVDs of what they like, it seems like even Disney is shedding Disney stuff off their streaming service these days.
While I definitly agree about pysichal media needing to stick around, the biggest challenge is too preserve digital media. That’s what i do thanks to pysichal storage devices, that being USB sticks and external hard drives. So stark raving dad can stick around.
Top tip for picking up cassettes - if you can check the tapes for mould before buying depending on where they’ve been stored they can get damp You can usually see it. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not playable but its obviously less than optimal and can affect the playback quality.
i am not against digital as part of what someone uses and in some cases (like a lack of room and if they move alot they have to move more STUFF around... i get it) ... it's "streaming everything" that i am against ... or maybe "streaming ONLY" (AND some may not mind that) ... I use early to late 2000-2010 MP3 players and local media alot here. I use free streaming services but my favorite stuff is LOCAL ... so if i cant pay for an ISP for awhile ... i dont lose ALL my stuff or access to it anyway. Nothing wrong with streaming (prices are going up a bit) as part of one's collection but i'd not like it to be the only thing. Heck I still have alot of my CD collection here and only stuff i haven't listened to (forget the media, i mean say album or artist) in 15+ years do i donate
Subscriptions are a double edge sword especially when they have more control than you do. It's good to have your favorites in a physical form. About Cassette Tapes though if you get a good enough deck tapes can sound like FM, or even up to the yearly year CDs (the 80's AAD variety). Most old Walkmans need work on them like new belts, and having the capacitors changed among other things. The best Walkmans sounded like FM radio if they are maintained well, but the best tape sound will need to be from a triple head Stereo Deck from the mid 80's through the late 90's (preferably decks with "Dolby S" or at least "HX Pro"). Your Optimus is okay, but it is a entry level portable tape deck (very cheap) so yeah the sound is passable, but not the best. I have CDs, Tapes, and LPs (Vinyls) I am collecting hard to find out of print stuff as well. I also backup the media I have/get onto digital (or onto blank tapes) due to potential Disc Rot & trying not to wear out the original tapes & LPs. Luckily they never got rid of the "Fair Use Act" down here in the U.S. (in spite of the RIAA/MPAA wishing it was) so I can make backups (and mix-tapes). Oh this goes for video formats too. I've learned the importance of making backups due to having my entire media collection destroyed by a EF4 (borderline EF5) tornado in 96. Hundreds of CDs, Tapes, LPs, games, and VHS just destroyed in a instant...... I've also had DVDs rot due to piss poor manufacturing including PS2 games.
Agree that audio tapes may be good for spoken word. As for music ..please never again. Would love access to Mini Disc but that’s just not available any more.
when buying mp3s was new I replaced all my cds with mp3s which were saved and accessible on a Google app. Well one day that app didn't exist and all the money I spent replacing my physical cds was gone. I still value my Dvds thank god. The internet is not always working so it's good to have a collection of movies you don't get sick of. Some movies do not exist on any streaming service. I am in my 40s. I am quite annoyed with the state of online games now. But I am glad I still have my dvds and player and a tv old enough to have the RCA hook ups lol.
I got rid of my entire physical media collection and have gone all digital. I'm going to die one day, it's not like I'll be taking my collection with me to the afterlife, what's the point?
I only pay for internet. Everything else is free including anything on youtube (also ad free), music, new movies, old movie, games etc....Everything you mentioned for little dollars can be found for free.
@@NerdCrave Yupper. TH-cam and whoever makes money off of me (so they try) watching a music video (which you can copy the link and covert any video to mp3) So i guess it's not really stealing if someone's making money...?
Hey Hey great video! gotta say though you shouldn't play "the Accidental Tourist" tapes in your device, They looked quite moldy in the videos and that can transfer to your other tapes if played in the same machine.
CDs are 80 mins, tapes up to 120 mins (60 mins per side) though you shouldn't go over 90 mins (45 mins per side) as the tape gets too thin. CD is a technically superior format to vinyl, FLAC or other lossless formats such as Apple Lossless or WAV are identical to the CD's PCM code.
What is going on with streaming services is something that I'm not surprised by. Although streaming is convenient and allows you to discover new movies/shows/music at a low cost, I can't trust it to always be there. If your internet goes out you are out of luck, and just because something was there yesterday doesn't mean that it is not there today. Plus, physical media gives me a snapshot of the way a movie/show actually was. As an example, they released a new version of "Dragonball Z" named "Dragonball Z Kai" which is an edited version of the original series. The "Dragonball Z" had 291 episodes, and "Dragonball Z Kai" has 167 episodes. Unless you have the original DVDs you can't see what the series actually was. Added to that is that there have been many different versions of "Dragonball Z" that have been released where there are many differences between them and the original.

Keep ur physical media some are worth a lot of moneyyuuu know 😅
This video was very informative for someone who doesn’t know much about physical media and the perspective of how streaming has changed the way we consume media.
Thank you! That’s my goal! Physical media is disappearing and we need to save it
Exactly yeah these streaming are ok if you have Internet and the money to pay for them. But physical media you don't need internet.
@@erikamccreary2614 also streaming services usually require you to subscribe to their 20 dollar plus plan to see 4K. 4K DVDs are usually the same price
As long as people are buying the movies on 4K and blue ray and DVDs 📀 stores 🏬 will come back to sell it again
The system isn't broken, it works exactly how it was intended to work when it was designed.
Well, yeah that’s why it’s broken
Ive kept and will continue to keep all my cds and dvds bluerays
I love collecting physical media. I've always have since I was little. It's much better than digital. Great video by the way and keep up the good work! :)
Thank you!
@@NerdCrave You're welcome! :)
You had some excellent points on why physical media is still valid and perhaps always will be since you regain control, time, money and peace of mind not obsessing with subscriptions trying to make sure you are getting your moneys worth being a slave to your television or computer.
Thanks, it’s definitely a conversation worth having
The worst part of digital media is the lack of control by the consumer. A digital company can go under and you can no longer access your playlist.
I try to buy physical media and then rip them. That’s legal but companies are forcing many to pirate. That’s a shame.
I am glad that more major artists release their albums also on audio casettes. I buy cd, vinyl and audio tape versions of my favorite artists. With good tape equipmemt and tape it can sound almost as good as CD.
I really love tapes
I got a walkman last October and I haven’t looked back! All my music popular and obscure are all on tape now and can’t be taken from me at a moments notice! Also I love the analog quality of the music, an experience you can’t get when your music is trapped behind pixels on a screen
There’s definitely a feeling to it
@@NerdCrave I wonder if tapes and tape players will be a common sighting in the next couple years as streaming services become worse and worse, what do you think?
@StudioPowerful I hope so! Tapes are awesome and you get to own your music!
Physical forever! I love it so much
Physical all day everyday because you own a piece of history forever digital you own nothing so be happy
Blu ray rocks long live blu ray
Blue rayyy is wayyyyy more cheaper I’m sticking to that 4K hella expensive
@@RobertQuant true I didn't jump to 4K Blu-ray till I have the proper setup OLED TV dv 4k player and a new receiver
As a side note to another reason for kicking digital and saving money, and this is the case for where I live in small town USA.
The public library has just about everything you could want physically, be it PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, DVD, Blue rays, audio books they have it all...
Me personally I tend to use it as a "try video game"
Option and if I like it I'll buy it.
Libraries are seriously overlooked
I have CDs and DVDs. I have lately started to collect DVDs again. I listen to a lot of classical music and have purchased some in FLAC files. I find myself browsing though my CDs to listen to something more often than going through my computer files. I like the process of putting the CD in the player. It seems more rewarding to me. I also have lots of vinyl. Enjoy your music and movies anyway you like though. I like the choice.
Choice is fantastic unfortunately, these choices are being taken away from us a little bit more every year
im being physical and less digital include the phone,,my life were improved and happy..im not stress abt current event because i dont know what happen right freaking now to worry about..i dicthed out all of my social media..and focus more on physically including bluray, wired headphone, radios, cd player in car, newspaper and comics, album cd, exercising, going out myself to get my things and foods not online..i am happy to be real and touchable
Great idea!
nothing beats listening to an album through the entire experience... the way the artist intends
Exactly!
That’s why physical media is wayyyyy better 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟📀📀📀💿💿💿💿
Beware toxic, vulture, resellers. Good finds can be found at thrift stores and flea markets.
We have a local guy who sells cds ,cassettes, vinyl etc great prices etc

I’ve been collecting CDs for only a few years, but only recently has it been a more regular activity for me. Now hovering at about 250 disc, I’m in the process of ripping the tracks as FLAC and enjoying them in “hi-res”.
Great commentary and I completely agree!
Flacs are pretty decent if you have good audio equipment to drive them through
@@NerdCrave the whole “audiophile” thing has been a rabbit whole for me haha - definitely fun nonetheless.
And that is why i have in the last 3 years, taken the control back in to my life, no more grayed out songs if i buy the cd, and no one can change or mess with a movie if i buy the DVD or buy the book if it is not 'pc' enough 😀
Ok, i have to buy ssd's or harddrives to put the musik on, and then to my smartphone, but i am in control. And book does something to a room, when you have some books on a shelf, and every bood you have read is an anchievement in it selfs 😀
Absolutely! I love this
I agree that music is probably the most accessible type of physical media you can collect because there's several types of formats/mediums through which you can listen.
All excellent points
I am an advocate for physical media, especially for children. You bring up great points about attention span.
That being said, I do love Tubi and Pluto.
Also, that is a cool Walkman. You are a cool dude.
Oh shucks I’m blushing
streaming was cool and all for a while but i miss waking up to the shrek dvd menu blasting at 2am, or hearing the ps2 start up noise and watching the intro to my favorite games over and over and over
I don’t miss it because I still have it in my house!
I couldn't get movies on stream. It just doesn't exist. However it's on DVD disc.
my cd collection is my most prized possession. i love to think about the fact that im physically surrounded by the things i love and that represent me. digital media? does not essentially exist. if you disappeared, no one would ever know what you liked.
Great perspective
I have cassettes that I recorded 50 years ago while sitting on a mountain top ( only a mountain in name,) that still work and they work fine, also I have DVDs and CDs thay I have had for about 20 year that to look at the playing surface you would think I had bought it brand new that morning, I love physical media because it is there when ever I want it.
I have over 300 DVDs and I would not get rid of any of them.
Cheers.
If you already have a collection of physical media, keep them as I realised many sold away but regret. Some try to buy back 😅
Yup
Then they told me buying back at higher price or difficult to find😅
I dont even have notifications on for social media. I love just playing retro games using real hardware and my trusty Sony trinitron
Man after my own heart
I'm 42 and absolutely love and agree with everything stated here. The most recent tech I use for entertainment is a Samsung S2 8" tablet that I've had for like a decade already and an iPod 160G classic for mp3 music. Also have a CD player in my 2013 Toyota and go thrifting on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I will never ever have a spotify account and still buy physical games as well. I don't do the extra downloads bells and whistles and refuse to subscribe to all these ridiculous services. Physical media will make a comeback when these corporations get so greedy they price out everyone.
Agreed! Check out my latest video put up yesterday to go even further with the topic!
Physical media 4 ever it rules
Yes!
I've never stopped buying either. Not a fan of streaming services telling me what I should listen to or watch. I still like to discover artists and pay attention. Some things are hidden gems as they don't exist online and others are just hard to have legitimately unless you pay monthly. No one has that much time to consume everything.
Exactly
Still got all my stuff..80s,90s, DVDs CDs vinyl, cassette,VHS, Nintendo, PS2, boom box... it's an OG thang.
I sold a lot of stuff over the years but I’ve bought most of it back
Im currently waiting for my "new" 5th gen Ipod classic! So excited to own my music again and add audiobooks to my collection.
Also, that line about how you used to read a book a week...i feel that one! I used to be an avid reader. I think modern tech has stolen that passion from me and i want to reclaim that.
If possible I'd look into jailbreaking it so you can have much more control over the device you own
I’m looking for a Sony mp3 player currently for my collection
Very interesting and well put 👏🏽. I’m 50 so I had the blessing of living through the 80’s and 90’s which are the two decades I remember most fondly. Like you said, it’s really annoying when I watch movies with my older daughter because she’s constantly on the phone, then asking me about parts of the movie she missed because she was texting or something 😡 I rarely ask her to watch a movie together nowadays because of that.
Yup, that’s annoying
Laws should be passed, that game developers should be forced to make games that dont require Internet. Physical media is still is better then subscription service, no ads and they cant take it away.
Well, I believe there’s a place in the market for online only games, but I think if your game is being released for a console, it should operate on that console without any external input
The one thing you failed to mention is the high level of censorship being experienced at the moment. Movies with great chunks taken out in case they offend. Same is starting to happen to books.
This is an excellent point that honestly deserves its own video
I still have my old personal Sony cd player with Anti-skip technology and bass boost..plus all of my CDs. I'll never get rid of them.
Can you explain what anti skip technology is? Was this Sony CD player portable?
@@mikey9836 Yep it's portable.. well the size of a pancake. :D I think it would read data ahead as sort of a buffer. if you were running, these things would make the laser skip reading the data.
@@MrDilldock that’s awesome. Could you still put bass boost and anti skip technology on Sony CD player
The anti skip on my discman works pretty darn good
@@NerdCrave I need to pull that thing out of storage after watching this video. I hope I didn't leave any batteries in it from 2001.
I’m 18 (turning 19 tomorrow) and have been collecting physical media since I was 16, so far I have many blu rays and cds that I love and it’s been way better than to constantly pay for a subscription that may or may not have what I’m looking for!
Welcome to the hobby
I've been picking up the odd cassette at the thrift stores but I can't find a cassette player! The used stores only selling it for $30!
It can be a bit of a challenge to find a good unit as well. You really have to do your homework before you buy.
I still prefer physical media. It's so alarming to know that Best Buy have now eliminated all DVDs and Blu-rays. Same with Target.
We’ll always have the boutique publishers, but yeah standard retail is disappearing
i love physical media i grew up with it im fixing on growing it with in the future
Good plan!
I’m buying vinyl and cd’s in pretty large quantities. The cd’s for little money too.
So cheap
@@NerdCrave Guilty as charged although I rather call it tactical buying ^_^ If an album was released on CD I buy it on CD, if it was released on vinyl I buy the LP. But if the master is better on either one that medium wins. Oh, and if a release is WAY more expensive on one medium but still sounds fine on the other I buy the cheaper but fin one. CD wins this 'logic' quite often :-)
@@SleeveZipper sorry I wasn’t saying you were cheap! Lol I was agreeing that CD’s are cheap
I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way
I usually go to my library’s sale once a month to buy books. After watching videos like this I started buying dvds and music cds at the sale. I’ve accumulated a tiny collection of classics from my childhood and movies I’ve loved in college. A couple weeks ago I was able to get some library discards for 25 cents each. Thanks for the video!
I really love hearing stories like this. It makes me happy to know that I’m not the only one who values these things.
I am also the type of guy that likes to have separate dedicated devices to do various thinks. I have a separate watch, alarm clock, game consoles, I don't use my phone to pay for stuff, etc. most everyone likes to use their phone for literally everything, but I don't like to do that.
Me either man, I hate emulating games on my phone, I’d rather bring a 3DS if I need gaming in a small form factor
Your music taste is amazing! so diverse!

Great point!
Hah! I was just thinking about my modded consoles\MiSTer just as you mentioned them. The analysis paralysis is real. Same with my media server to an extent. Things were more straight forward when i have less choices. But I also really enjoy collecting.
I love cassettes and cds. Both sound great. And they both are mine.
Me too! New video on this topic coming this week, stay tuned
Awesome! How do you like the shockwave?

For most of the ps4 generation I bought most of my games digital. I’ve really come around on owning your discs, and now try to purchase all single player games physical.
Also really enjoy blu rays and 4K over streaming quality. Crazy how much better a Blu Ray is than streaming “4K”
Welcome to the club!
Physical media can trigger some powerful emotions and memories, it’s like a little time capsule
Any conversation about physical media must include sheet music 🙏.
That’s actually a good point
I started buying cd's and vinyl (and planning dvd’s as well) not because of trend but because of hate that there are A LOT of music and movies constantly disappearing from my streaming services accounts. Even something you “bought” can disappear. Its like someone always messes with “my” library. And there is also A LOT of movies are plain unavailable to watch because of my “region”. Fuck all of this. It either pirating or this.
P.S. I wish minidisk would come back, but oh well
Agree, I’m going to buy the entire series of two and a half men on dvd today for $20 even though it’s on prime video
Been collecting cds for the past couple years , and ripping them to an mp3 player. It occasionally i pick up a random cd that looks interesting.
I had to downsize mu livin space and sold my 600 vinyl albums years ago. Some of them i wont ever replace... $$$$ I have my FLAC files of those albums...at least
Digital makes sense in some cases
Physical is usually better quality than digital. CDs can be ripped to FLAC anyway
Yes. Cds sound better. Without a doubt.
Digital media wouldn't have so many issues if it wasn't full of DRM. DRM free digital media is pretty great
Yes, I agree. Might be a hot take but NFT’s could actually be useful in giving ownership to unique digital copies
I’ve been telling my friends for years to keep their physical media and keep buying physical . No one listened until recently.
My thriftstore sells CDs 3 for $1, and my local Goodwill sells all physical media for .25 cents.
Awesome deals!
Agreed!
That is why I am keeping all my movies cause I can watch what I want without worrying about them taking it off a stream app
Excellent video!
Thank you
This was a great take on this topic. My experience is very similar, and I highly prefer physical media again and have been doing so for the past decade already. So, my digital-only life didn't even last that long, only a few short years, actually.
I use less and less digital
ok you almost have me convinced to get into cassettes again lol so who knows if I'll get a player again soon. I do prefer CDs, and keep a giant wallet of them that we found for next to nothing. I also got a modest record collection going. As far as movies go, I always tell people to keep DVDs of what they like, it seems like even Disney is shedding Disney stuff off their streaming service these days.
It’s very frustrating
While I definitly agree about pysichal media needing to stick around, the biggest challenge is too preserve digital media. That’s what i do thanks to pysichal storage devices, that being USB sticks and external hard drives. So stark raving dad can stick around.
Definitely important
Top tip for picking up cassettes - if you can check the tapes for mould before buying depending on where they’ve been stored they can get damp You can usually see it. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not playable but its obviously less than optimal and can affect the playback quality.
Mould is a big problem with VHS tapes too. It’s always worth taking a close look before you buy.
Good video. Audio books on cassette tapes is a great idea.
i am not against digital as part of what someone uses and in some cases (like a lack of room and if they move alot they have to move more STUFF around... i get it) ... it's "streaming everything" that i am against ... or maybe "streaming ONLY" (AND some may not mind that) ...
Good balanced take
simple not being on my phone unless i need to be is key, kinda like watching youtube channels lol
Thanks for the tips! Great comment
I agree with this - i prefer to buy digital movies but will buy cd’s still as i can digitise them in higher quality than iTunes.
Agree that audio tapes may be good for spoken word. As for music ..please never again. Would love access to Mini Disc but that’s just not available any more.
I’ve actually wanted to do a video about mini disc
when buying mp3s was new I replaced all my cds with mp3s which were saved and accessible on a Google app.
No replacement for ownership
I got rid of my entire physical media collection and have gone all digital. I'm going to die one day, it's not like I'll be taking my collection with me to the afterlife, what's the point?
The point is enjoying the superior experience while you’re still alive
I only pay for internet. Everything else is free including anything on youtube (also ad free), music, new movies, old movie, games etc....Everything you mentioned for little dollars can be found for free.
I assume you’re stealing then. No judgment I pirate too
@@NerdCrave Yupper.

I’ll have to look closer at that, I just picked it up and didn’t look too closely
Just like the original versions of Star Wars were edited in later releases
cassettes can sound very good.a 3 head deck with dbx noise reduction can equal cd quality.
They can, but they often don’t

And the good thing is that it lasts a lifetime too, mainly for pressed discs, not recorded discs ^^
A Frustrating point is the "modern" PC completely deletes Drive Bays with no use for a DVD/CD Drive, I still keep my Old Lian Li Aluminum Case that has a Blu-Ray/DVD installed while the modern PC Crowd laughs at me if I post a picture of my PC Setup.
