People need to understand the technical aspect of having physical media versus streamed files, things like compression, bandwidth, connection, display settings and more that most people don't understand. Just bought an Atari 2600+, a new physical only console.
Never really went away. Just slowed down.
Another problem with streaming services is that if censorship laws ever become stricter, the original content would be modified to meet the requirements of more strict censorship laws. The only way you’re guaranteed the opportunity to watch content in its originally released form is if you own the originally released physical media.
The thing is, they are not only doing this when required by law.
I heard Money for Nothing by Dire Straits on the radio last week. They cut out an entire verse. Anyone who knows the song can guess which one. Wouldn't surprise me if its the same on Spotify, Pandora, etc.

They already censor themselves. There are already popular comedy series with episodes taken down because streaming services are afraid that audiences are too sensitive to view them and that customers will complain.
At least in the US, it’s not about censorship laws getting stricter. It’s about these megacorporations trying to play ‘parent’ for grown adults. 1984 was meant to be a warning and a work of fiction, not a guidebook.

There are SO MANY TITLES that aren't available with streaming and it takes SO LONG TO FIND movies on streaming services.
Physical media is the only way to go for me.

Yep I wanted to watch the Swedish version of the millennium trilogy the other day, not the American remake. I was willing to buy it digitally. It’s not even available to buy or stream. All they have is the American remake. I bought the Swedish trilogy on blu ray from eBay for only £6.38.
Physical media is one thing I've never strayed from. I recently pulled a VHS of Disney's " A Bug's Life" from a dumpster on February 23rd, and dug around again 2 days later on the 25th and pulled up 2 more Disney VHS tapes, "Recess School's Out", and a half hour short "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Who needs Disney+ when you can get Disney's stuff for free? Also as a bonus, I even pulled out a Memorex 90 minute "clown" cassette with that clear shell, yellow hubs, and colored shapes on the inner slip sheets. Since the person's name written on the tape's label matches the name on the mailing label of a country music magazine that was there with it, it's likely to be filled with country music. Now if I can just get a working cassette player to see if I'm right. My old boom box needs repairs.
I remember what a friend of mine asked me when Netflix and some of these other streaming services started to come online. He was like, all of the movies you want to watch will soon be online, so you can get rid of your physical media and free up some space in your home. I was like, what happens if a movie you like gets taken down because it suddenly becomes “problematic” or they no longer want to pay royalties to keep it. No thanks, I’ll keep my 900+ movies and TV series in physical form. That way, I can watch what I want, when I want. Fast forward a few years and this actually started happening. My friend was like, I’ll bet you’re glad you kept your physical copies aren’t you. I was like, yep! 👍🏾😀
The local rental store was mine and my buddies main hangout. We had a great relationship with the people there and even did volunteer work just for fun, my buddy even worked behind the counter and got free rentals for it. I got hit by a truck on my bike while I was headed there one day and the owners gave me free rentals all summer. Some of our most cherished memories involve that store and I'd go back in a heartbeat.
I will not buy digital media. If it’s not physical. I will not buy it.

I remember yearssss back i lost Playstation downloads that i had paid and saved. It was from that point i started to buy physical games...and that was yearsss before whats happening now
Nice video! A few weeks ago, I pulled up my Apple purchases and remembered that I'd bought some episodes of one of Anthony Bourdain's old travel and food shows and wanted to watch it with my wife. I pulled it up and the episodes were gone. Maybe some issue with the rights to his shows following his death? In any case, it's an example of something that I bought digitally and has been taken away. Wouldn't have happened if I'd bought a complete season of No Reservations.
When i buy movies on DVD and Blu-ray, they are mine and i have everything from Ingmar Bergman and Kurosawa to horror and science fiction all in my recreation room collection. However, i no longer let anyone in that room anymore because they judge me for it. They say things like, " Oh the money you could have spent on other things!" Who needs that! And young people will often snicker because i collect physical media and i tell them that Netflix can take out any of their favorite movies at any time. And streaming services just keep raising their prices. I have my movies and can watch them whenever i choose.

Definitely, I think more people are realizing streaming and digital isn't what they thought. It's convenient, but physical media is forever. The future looks bright!
DVDs are not going anywhere. Just like records never went anywhere. I love how people make it seem like it did and it didn't. The Die Hard fans never wavered from these. Physical media for life
Yeah, they said the same about 78s, cassettes, VHS, Beta and 8 track.
I love Static Tape. I make the 40min drive to Muskegon 1-2 times a month just to shop there. The mall it’s in is a hidden gem also featuring a comic shop, collector toy shop, record store, sneaker reseller, collector card shop, & discount toy store.

My biggest fear is these companies stop making DVD players. That would be horrible because then we would be forced to stream
Its actually very east to fix a Bluray player , much like a CD player change out the laser and swap it out for a better one , Bang your back in business for another X amount of years , when you break these players down , not much to them at all , a couple motors a few other things easy fix , Guess what my Friend TH-cam is your friend when time comes to fix and repair , Believe me its not that hard to do , When youre able to fix a Machine thats next level Enjoyment in the Physical media Game
That is why the only kind of laptop computer I bought after the turn of the century, had to have a DVD/CD player built in. So I prefer "trailing edge" technology over the "ever thinner Apple wundekind." Daisy chaining won't work on my card table. Besides, ThinkPad computers are easy to repair and last longer than Cupertino's "polyethylene pams."

Death to digital!!! Yes, convenience will always win over but people need to realize that you own NOTHING on streaming not to mention if you love a particular movie it's best to snag it on Blu-ray as it will be the best possible quality to watch that movie. With no commercials. With no bandwidth stuttering. Just the best possible home video experience.

I'm with having physical media all the way! I have a retro room with 2 tube tvs, shelves of vhs tapes, record albums, dvds, and snes, and genesis games. Nothing past 2001 is allowed in the room.
I started buying movies again when I found out about arrow video. But even though I hear physical media is dying. There sure seem to be a lot of studios releasing 4k movies. These include big studios new releases, going back to their catalog. Then 3rd parties like arrow, 88 films, vinegar syndrome, shout factory, and more. It's amazing how industries can just make a come back and interest just grows and grows. Same thing for Board Games. There seem to be a bunch of big time board games, especially if you head over to kickstarter or gamefound.
Criterion has been my main obsession but I do like the weird obscure shit from Vinegar Syndrome

@@Teremei so much to explore with CC. Check out the Eclipse series: Aki Kaurismaki- the proletariat trilogy. Those movies are phenomenal. You can tell Wes Anderson got some inspiration from them
Just started my collection. Became fed up with streaming bs. Prices going up, mediocre quality, random selection, buffering etc. Invested in a good bluray player and wrote out about 200 - 250 must have films. I aim for 4k when it makes sense but half are used blurays. Its a good time to buy.
I never stopped buying physical media, i could see the issues brewing when most people didn't, i still have my VHS collection and still watch alongside DVD and bluray.

....although I'm a MUSIC Physical Media lover (CD's Tapes, Vinyl, etc.) I respect channels like these, to spread the word about the IMPORTANCE of Physical media; streaming services CAN be corrupted, & saved 'content' can be LOST easily....Or, never even given...do you know "Looking For Mr. Goodbar" (starring Diane Keaton) is NOT available for streaming!? ...off, to my VHS Cassette, I GO......
Netflix in 2008-2010 had a big selection of old movies. I know because my que was filled with movies and then by 2011 or 2012 they all vanished! A lot of great horror movies gone... :(
I briefly worked at a video store around 1998 but this was a unique store in that a lot of what they had was foreign or artsy films and documentaries. A lot of that would be hard to find on streaming.
When you rent a movie from Amazon's streaming service, it costs $10 Canadian, and once I press play, I only have 48 hours to watch it and then they lock it and don't let me finish it.
Total rip-off.
They had a one time use for dvds back in the day also. It didn't do very well.
That sounds almost more like how pay-per-view used to work.

I didn’t know there was a market for VHS tapes now. I just found my mothers copy of Scarface from 30 years ago. I haven’t seen it in decades. I transcend it over to DVD like 22 years ago. I first DVD was the matrix. I have about 3000 physical copies now.
It stated when the Ipod came out and all my friends got rid of their CDs. I kept all mine because I knew where it was going to go. Then it happened with DVDs and streaming. My friends got rid of their DVDs too. I kept my DVDs too. Now, they are rebuying all their DVDs and CDs and some times tapes too. I am glad there is some blow back from people about corporations trying to control what gets streamed and how it is edited too.
I would call it a slowing of the decline of physical media rather than a rise.
In Australia there is only one major retailer left who still sells physical media in a meaningful way... JB Hi-Fi. And even they have cut back on the number of stores that sell it. Buying online direct from niche companies will be the future.
Streaming service's aren't profitable so much anymore they know it.
I am not surprised. Even Disney has released their newer shows such as The Mandalorian, Loki, and WandaVision on physical media. It tells me that Disney is looking for more ways to reach people and that streaming those shows through Disney+ is not enough.
I just bought 23 dvds/ blurays this past weekend. Don't really care as much to track down VHS, though. But, the next 2 months, I want to get new things & one of them is bound to be expensive-ish, so we'll have to see how things go.

Physical media has many advantages over streaming. For me personally, I prefer physical media over streaming for several reasons: 1) The quality of streaming videos are highly dependent on the reliability of your internet connection. That is not the case for physical media. 2) I can sell or trade my physical media if I don't want them anymore. I cannot do that with streaming videos. 3) I enjoy watching the special features on blu-rays and DVD's especially for the movies I love. The special features increase my appreciation and enjoyment of those movies. 4) My physical media collection can look good on my shelf (just like how some people like to display their book collection). I've also displayed some blu-rays and DVDs just to admire the artwork on the packaging. There are more reasons to love physical media that other people have mentioned on their comments or on published articles that I've read recently. But the ones I mentioned are the most important for me personally.
When DVDs first came out there seemed to be more extra content. Directors or actors commentary and special features. Now it just seem there is just the movie and if you want the extra stuff you have to buy the Blu ray or special edition.

Those subscriptions and steams started to cost a lot. Plus, the services began to inject advertising into shows just like network TV.

Physical media will live forever, it is the superior format.
We never stopped buying Blu-ray, DVD and 4K's. DVD's are upscaled on most players and there's no issue with picture quality. We have literally two-thousand+ movies and series' in our collection, with discs in 16 ring binders, plastic cases binned, and the collection managed on a simple spreadsheet. Takes up no space at all.
Most of our movies are not on any streaming service as have been the best movies and series we have ever watched.
We hate woke and haven't streamed anything for years.

I had a wall full of VHS. Started collecting when video first came. Theyre gone. Now its dvd and Blueray (1800 movies + a lot of tv series).

I like to buy dvd/digital combo. To save on the wear and tear I enjoy watching the digital but I always want to have the dvd or blu ray backup. I do find that DVD lasts longer than blu ray. I never want physical media to go away.
I have just bought a new 4k bluray player from Panasonic, and I'm going to invest in my own 4k collection. I still have some DVDs and blurays.

I never got over that VHS tapes in the USA were in cardboard sleeves. In NZ we had them in plastic cases

The case was massive though, much bigger than the ones we have over here. I'm wondering if all VHS plastic cases were that size in the USA.
There are massive ones in the UK too but they all seem to be from ex rental stores and are pretty uncommon.
Depends on the movie, but we had 3 different kinds of VHS cases. One was just a cardboard sleeve, one was a hard plastic clamshell & the third was a thick, softer plastic case that was kind of hollow between the outer layer & the inlay where the actual tape sat. That third one tended to be most common with kids movies. The hard plastic one, I rarely remember seeing much of, except at libraries & rental stores, but I think a few movies were released with cases like that. The cardboard sleeves were pretty darned common, though.
Physical Media Forever !
Trust me I have nearly 4,000 DVDs shows, movies, series, animated and other genres including VHS, book as well as video game media. Heck I remember my family owning not only a beta max player but a dual deck VHS recorder that could bypass macro vision back in the day with hardly any noticeable changes. Though with time those vhs's were lost to time and that old dual deck player. So many fond memories of those old media players which when I started to collect at the time vhs tapes back 1995-1996 to graduate to DVDs and some blu rays these days of hard to get or locate movies or shows from the silent era of movies and serials to only a few of the modern era and those are miss and very rare hits anymore.
This can only be a good sign. Here’s hoping! 😀
So in that first news clip they mention Grindhouse Video, which is ironic because they just closed their physical store last month. Which sucked because I loved that place, went there all the time and got so much good stuff.
Get your movies and music on physical disc before they scrub everything deemed indecent, obscene or offensive, it's only a matter of time!!!
90% of what I buy is used blurays. New ones do come at a cost.
Same here. Due to people going "all in" with streaming, you can pick up some great deals.
I've recently obtained many "complete" box sets (some unopened) on the used/surplus stock market, at 10-20% of original RRP.
Couldn't be happier that other folks are ditching their collections in favour of streaming!

What I liked was the mom and pop stores where they had a bin of .50 cent movie posters. Some used props for sale and bargain vhs tapes that were under a dollar. That is the only time I cared about the actual physical copy. The store was about the size of your living room. I don't want to pay 20 bucks for a movie I may only see once. I don't mind the streaming services and see way more than I would if I bought the physical copy.
Good video, although I felt like I was watching a Kung Fu movie at times. One word of caution on VHS collecting. There were a lot of fly by night video companies in the 80s who distributed poorly recorded videos. Many were recorded in the worse speed possible (SLP) which produced a crappy picture at best and crappier audio. There were also some movies which were distributed by a couple of different companies where company A would sell the movie in SP and company B would later sell the video SLP mode. It pays to double check what speed the video was recorded in. The audio of the SLP movies seem to crap out after a handful of viewings.
Great video. But I will admit that it bugs me that you are storing your VHS tapes horizontally on the shelf behind you. This is a big no-no. They should be stored vertically. They settle over time The tape settles and it degrades the tape. If you want them to last longer store them vertically.
Okay so why not dust off your dvd and go to your local library. They rent out a ton of stuff besides books.
Its important in the Gaming Space as well but I support Physical Media for Movies,TV Shows,and Videogames I buy all them.

many youtube are believe that physical media is doomed due many factors. Game industry want to do away with it. Some retailers want to stop selling them, and some movie and tv studios are still gambling on digital and streaming media that is causing them to loose money.

Yeah, players are flying off the shelves by the hundreds and Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target are in packed with Blurays, 4Ks and players.
One can't just point to the internet sales. Amazons prices are increasing slowly. A sign the are the only real major game in town.

Hey, not related to this video, but if you've never given any of the newer Star Trek series a chance, I can highly recommend Strange New Worlds, I just started watching it recently and it's really good. I've also seen the 1st season of Discovery and that was good as well. I haven't seen Picard yet. I know in some past video you were unsure about these and I didn't know if you ever actually gave any a shot.
I'll be honest, I just can't get into new Trek. They just don't feel like Star Trek to me. From what I watched just not for me.
If it doesn't exist in a physical form, then it doesn't exist at all as far as I'm concerned.
Then again I've reached an age where I don't need to see the latest film or TV show ASAP.
Also there are loads of things already released, that I've never gotten around to watching yet.

Vhs is still a viable industry. After market and 3rd Party producers are making VHS copies of films that came out after the transition to DVD. Maybe you can help us locate some good ones to seek out. Or point us in the direction of some of your favorite online shopping spot fits Vhs or dvd, Blu-ray, 4K, etc.

It's a hard sale to a 20 year-old that one 4K for $25-40 or a $10-15 Bluray is a better deal than Prime, where you get access to thousands of films and access to music along with the delivery perks for $15.
None of the kids who work for me are interested in hard media for that reason. Most don't collect lps or CDs. Lps didn't exactly get people to dump streaming for hard media. Sure, you can contrive and conjecture about what streaming might do and make a case for hard media. But the fact is, the key demographic didn't grow up with hard media. There is no nostalgia there or mystique as with Lps. Incidently, nearly half of those who buy Lps don't own a player.
Also, you can't watch a Blu-ray or 4K on your phone. Believe it or not, a larger portion of people watch film on their phones.
I like to use streaming to rent films i haven't seen for example dial of destiny. If I like it I will buy the physical copy.

I don't Miss Blockbuster, any Video Rental Store. Because I Never liked the Price it cost to Rent a New Release.
If I wanted to see a New Release Movie immediately I would just buy it.
I Never Got / Get a Thrill going to look at Physical Media at Retail Stores / Rental places.
I can get pretty Jazzed when I get a 📦 Package with 20+ Movies and whole TV Series in it that I now own.
It is Nice to open them and to have a pride of ownership.
But being in a Store, a Rental place does Nothing for me. It is Not like you can Open the Boxes and look inside of them.
Rental Stores had Rental Boxes Not the original Boxes.
The Nostalgia over Video Rental Stores I don't Believe is Genuine.
I went to Video Rental Stores from Day 1 and until they went out of Business. Blockbuster was by far the Worst one.
Blockbuster was bad because they were the most expensive and they had 40 copies or more of the popular new titles so their shelf space for older titles was limited.
The main shelves did Not change very much over the years. They stocked the same Videos for years. So Blockbuster was really mostly for Buying Used Videos and Renting New Titles. Other National Video Places were just as bad too.
I seldom went to Blockbuster because of this.
I had 8 other places nearby that were better.
I Never saw any Video Rental Store as a place where people hung out to socialize.
People Never approached one another to talk. The Video Rental Clerks were Not Movie Fans there to talk movies. They were High School kids told to try to sell popcorn, candy to go with your Videos.
The older Clerks were All about Sales. "If you rent 2 more movies you can keep them for 5 Nights and pay the price for 4 movies the 5th Rental is Always Free."
People Are known to Hang out and talk to each other in Coffee Shops. At Barnes and Noble. You could possibly find a Book Lover, even a Movie Fan interested in talking at a place like Barnes and Noble that actually has chairs and couches for people to sit on.
The Video Rental Stores of the Past were get in and get out as Fast as possible. There was No sense of Community in them. They were Not a Community social spot.
Even when a Girl I Liked worked at the Local Video Store she wasn't there to talk and Hangout. "Can I help you with something...?"
You don't socialize with people who are at Work. Employees are there to Sell, Sell, Sell, Not to Socialize.
So where can I buy a VCR let alone getting it fixed
To the credit of Walt Disney Pictures in the past between 16 to 22 years ago they made a string of physical DVDs of content that you’d otherwise never known was ever available had it not been for those old DVDs I only found out about them last February of*2023* that they ever existed I never got around to outright collecting them I only got The Oswald The Lucky Rabbit because it was on the site otherwise you’ll have to look elsewhere for the rest
I only prefer streaming if its a long running tv series...but still remember getn pist they took off Stargate Sg1 (10 seasons) off Netflix...and BlueBloods!

...this is funny but due to the dvds no longer being sold in stores....i went out of my way to by all the Quentin Tarantino movies on dvd! I also got classics such all 4 Norman Bates Psycho movies and the Charles Bronson/Chuck Norris movies...and even the X-Files! Try streaming those! Hah

There’s literally nothing on streaming I want to watch besides marvel on d+ but that’s purely because they have the IMAX versions. I understand using streaming for the trendy shows like Stranger Things, Squid Game or Wednesday. But anything else I just buy. And you don’t have to buy 4k blu ray to get a massive quality jump. Even a basic DVD looks better than a 4k stream.
I have :
over 5000 dvd/blurays.....been buying 'old' stuff by the boatloads! New woke stuff is shite anyway.
over 5000 cd's....I visit like 8 cd/record fairs a year and order loads online and still go to the rare store.
Over 1500 books......F off with your e-readers.
Over 2000 games, pc/playstation/nintendo. No physical means pirating. The rare game that's worth it anyway.
Over 55 000 comics. Online reading....oh F off! I want paper, I want to smell it, turn the page. American comics are woke garbage, so not spending there....manga and European comics!

Physical media ( hate that term but cannot think of an alternative) is a hot topic, so of course everyone is on it. Watched that same video the other day, maybe due to watching some of your vids or you tube just pushing the hot topic.
Streaming is inevitable and convenient.
Its a scam but so was upgrading to dvd/bluray/4k.
Basically same content tweaked, just repackaged.
Could say the same about your content, as you repeat the same message over and over.
Don't mean it badly, just pointing out the same obsevation you made yourself.
Physical media and streaming can live together.
Some want less clutter and are too exhausted by the time they flop in front of a tv so will watch whatevers on.
Others are more adamant and want to own their films/shows so they can watch whenever they want.
I am in the pro physical media camp but it is more complicated than just owning or streaming.
The over proliferation of choice has diluted the quality of content being made. The availability of content is dependent on licensing which is on a limited time basis to the platforms unless its owned by them.
More choice leaves people often scrolling longer for something good to watch😂😂
I like your passion for simpler times, alot of my collecting whether its toys/v.h.s. is all about that nostalgia for the past.
Was it better back then or is it the rose tinted spectacles?
