A Brief History Of Post Apocalypse Movies Part 3: The 1980s (1980 -1985)

It's taken me nearly 2 weeks to complete this video as ive done some things ive never done before. My ugly mug is only in the beginning and the end btw. I take a look at some some select Post-apocalypse movies released between 1980 and 1985. There are a loads that i left out because if i did all the films, it would take me about 6 months to script, record voice over, source clips and edit it. I...

Part 2 looks at some of the more well known films in the genre as well as some of the lesser known films of the 1970s. There are a few films from this decade I didn't get to such as Gas-s-s-s and Glen & Randa mainly because I haven't seen them. Sorry for the Mic Issues in this one, there seemed to be some audio problems which i was unaware of until played the video back. Shout out to @roybarrat...

Having realized I drone on about Post-Apocalyptic movies in a lot of my videos, I came to a point where I noticed I hadn't actually done a video on the Subject. So here it is, Part 1 of my very detailed, well quite detailed look at how Cinema depicts the end of the world. Part 1 focuses on the films released between 1933 and 1969. If it's a film that you enjoy but is not a part of your favorites, it does NOT need an upgrade. There are too many content creators with this elitist approach to film collecting that influence people that are new to the hobby.

civilization crumbles not by nuclear war but by a nerve gas the US government experiments with. That's the opening of 1970's G-A-S-S-s-s. The gas kills everyone over 25 years old and the film follows a small group as they tour the damage in the deserts and small towns. A passion project of Roger Corman. The film changed by the owners of A.I.P while in production. Apparently they didn't like Roger's pro-youth anti-establishment angle he was going for. Maybe that's why the film is a slog with the usual suspects like bad humor. I'm drawn into it cuz it features a young Cindy Williams before doing the tv show Laverne & Shirley and....a young Bud Court just before Harold & Maude and Brewster McCloud. Though he doesn't do much in it but look cool. Perhaps the film is best because American International Pictures so pissed off Roger Corman he went and started New World Pictures. So everytime i rewatch Humanoids from the Deep, Slumber Party Massacre, Children of the Corn or Vamp despite already seeing them i can thank the hot mess of G-a-s-s-s. -- From what i heard in the original story of I Am Legend the main character IS the real monster. That he is terrorizing and killing the people of the new world. The story is like a writer's trick where the reader is lead along to feel empathy for someone abhorrent. That Heston would later in real life head the NRA and help usher in an age of dystopian mass shootings brings new diminension of both the book and movie. -- i agree with the other people commenting; both Death Race 2000 & Sleeper are awesome post apocalyptic films.

Couple of standouts of the era for me were DEFCON 4, Radioactive Dreams and Dead End Drive in, which is more dystopian than PA but its similarly setup to Madmax at the very beginning of societal collapse.

Caveman.....isn't that the one known for featuring Ringo? From my memory his best work after A Hard Day's Night Play Misty for Me is fun cuz Clint Eastwood plays a hip DJ stuck in his freewheelin' free lovin' ways that gets him in trouble. His big collard multi colored shirts makes me think he was about to turn into hippy at that time. His life goal in the movie is to get a job doing a free-form radio show in San Francisco. There's some good footage of the Monterey Jazz Fest. Also good to see images of California before the changes of the 1980's (construction & $). Q The Wing Serpent was a spontaneous thing after Larry Cohen drop working on a big budget picture. Made on the fly. Lots of scenes shot without a permit on the streets of NY (before it changed with the high rise constructions & $$$). There's a scene with David Carradine walking in a bar meeting Michael Moriarty that was his first day walking onto set. Most of what plays out there is improv. The character Michael plays has some great moments....one of his best films I was majorly dissappointed by The Good Thief. But i only watched it once.

I'm glad i ran into this video. A nifty selection. I haven't seen nor heard much about Striker & The Quiet Earth. Its also good to hear people celebrate(?) Threads, The Day After and the films of Peter Watkins---shit i seen but off the map for most people. Even the genre freaks seem to miss these ones. To their eternal loss as they debate the diminishing returns of Bloomhouse & Marvel releases. I've seen Escape From NY listed under the general umberlla category of post-apocalyptic. Perhaps from all the scenes set in a crumbling futuristic city turned prison. The film sets up a premise that society has hit a breaking point with various factors, namely crime, but doesn't spend much time in illustrating what the future United States is like across the land. Just a small glimpse of the police/military/government running with advance technology and resources. Its quit likely the rest of the country is a shit hole in varying degrees of post-civilization. Other films..... well The Terminator had a few scenes in the future hell-scape. Pretty smart to mix the post-apocalypse nightmare with scenes of the modern world . A good story construction to keep audiences engage. I appreciate all the research & love of the art in this video. I also appreciate that the video isn't broken up by commercials nor have the yawn-inducing youtube script that most channels seem reliant on. Keep up the good work.

I thought that in The Day After it was heavily implied that NATO fired first when it air-burst nuclear weapons over advancing Soviet troops. Given that was dictrine at the time, I that the intention was that NATO fired first, but the reveal was kept subtle as the film was generating enough 'heat' already.

Though dated, Threads still packs a punch and is a more believable and powerful work than the glossier The Day After I'd argue. Both are decent films, but hardly entertaining as there are scenes in them which are hard to watch. I never knew Testament existed so I'll have to locate a copy if I fancy some bleak watching. Seeing the Chernobyl series in its entirety recently with a friend was soul-sapping for both of us!

Really good vid. The genre is endlessly fascinating and occasionally terrifying. There's several there I've not heard of. The Max trilogy, in particular, is a classic. I love the reveal at the end of 2 and I respect that they tried something different with 3. I think Fury Road would have been possibly the greatest film of all time had Gibson featured. Well done putting this together and getting to grips with Davinci Resolve. I made the switch a few months ago and, although I don't know what 90% of the functions do, I think its a superb piece of (free) software 👍. Sourcing the clips is the part that takes me the most time.

Mad Max 2 is a triumph as it manages to be graphically violent throughout yet remains entertaining and amusing at the same time. Some of the Aussie humour is terrific. Fury Road is underrated and maintains the spirit of MM2 well. Visually more impressive but the 80s film is more original. The low budget original Mad Max film doesn't get a lot of love despite a few decent scenes and a worthy adversary in the Toecutter. One of the best film franchises IMO.
