As a recently retired mechanic I am bewildered as to how we have come to having very expensive cars whose engines have components made of crap. I have worked on old Aston Martins ,Jaguars XK120,140,150's old BMW , Mercedes ,VW Audi everything, through to modern cars. I rarely remember rockers breaking , on a PSA hdi engine when the cambelt broke , the rockers, snapped along a weak point saving the engine. A series mini's hitting fantastic revs after a missed gear change...and ...nothing happened. I remember a VW employee telling me that the design life of their products was five years...Then you trade it in for a new one. It was amazing that timing chains became a service item, then the sprockets , now made of sintered material that hook and wear . Then finally roller rockers.... I have seen duplex chains on BMW and Merc engines with virtually no stretch after mega miles with just ordinary service intervals and old mineral oils . I enjoy your channel , but despair of the engineering and build quality of modern German cars.
I worked at a main Datsun dealership late 70’s early 80’s for 7 years. The bodywork was awful but I never knew of a single duplex timing chain fail in all that time.
Totally agree, being from similar era, modern vehicles are a 100k miles and they‘throwaway items’,can’t get my head round them Ford “wet “ timing belts 😱😂😂 Duplex timing chains rule ✌️
Yeah but duplex chains create too much friction, which decreases power and increases fuel consumption. Then you have longer oil changes (fuel dilution). The sprockets also have fewer teeth than the older engines (increased torque transfer on the chain + added chordal action). All this makes the chain fail far quicker. I don't buy German as they put all the money into the interiors (which are fantastic) but then skimp on absolutely everything else... and never anything with a timing chain. PSA HDi engines are quite possibly the most reliable engines we have in the UK.. even if there is a timing chain inside of it!

Depends on the production date. I have a b9 S4 dated 3/19 and have the updated ones that are not prone to failure. Although a lot of people say 7/19 is the cutoff date. There are some other cases of S4's produced before 7/19 with the more durable bearings. You can easily check with a borescope to make sure. @@stephenrichardson6105 I was cross shopping a m140i and B9 S4 back in 2019, glad i ended up ordering a 140i. I still love Audi cars but they definitely have some serious design issues.

Hopefully someone will make some uprated billet rockers for these engines. I still believe the oil is a key contributor in most modern engine failures… oil change regime is far to long and needs to be reduce by at lease 50%. Honestly I think Audi are building their engines with “stock” tolerances in mind more than ever, to save money. Those rocker arms look so fragile!
You should use license plate covers, less work at video edit. Cuz we still saw the license plates even with blurrings. Make 4-5 units with a nice VAG Technic logo and design 😉
😀 done my best , premier never cover it good
Why can’t the head be tig welded repaired?
What is the milage of this car?
What year was this S4?
67 plate
Why there is no a class action against Audi. Even if this is happening beyond warranty, this level of faulty design would fail to meet any definition of "reasonable reliability" based on consumer laws in the UK
This will be the reason why Ill be selling my 18 advant S4 before the ticking bomb goes boom boom. . .
Is there a reason you're switching to different rods than the ones you sold me?
Easier to get them
Obvious lack of regular services. Similar rocker arm failure to the GMC rocker arms on Weller farms. Mick London
Another timebomb exploded
I personally think that cylinder head is salvageable, you have the metal plug I would get it aluminium welded by a very competent welder
I'll take an M30B34 with a 5 speed and exit the chat :)
Perfect advertisement why you need to service your car
Crazy really.
I see it all the time.
I done a jaguar F Pace this week 115k miles never had a oil change and customer said its been sounding rough and smoking. rattle from timing chain so he put more oil in.
Half way up the dip stick.
Couldn't understand why oil was dripping from the turbo pipes.
😂
And expected a cheap fix.
Yeah sell it buy a electric scooter
LOL at the chopper. That engine is fooked; dont remap your cars kids!
2020 - 24 still have noise. From the bottom end almost guaranteed every single one you can hear it at idle.
🥺
Can you do mine I’m from U.S.
We can
Maybe I am wrong but why you try to running a damage engine? more damage can be done this way.
How ?
Everything is cheap on these cars, apart from the purchase price 😮😅
Remind me never to buy a S4 B9 lol...whatever that is.
Don't buy an S4 B9
I’ve had a lot of Audi cars from 2008 onwards upto 2021 and after a while they all needed big repair bills so I wouldn’t buy an Audi again
