Owner of the RS4 decided to build the engine, so lets build a V8!

  • Welcome to the 3rd video with the B8.5 RS4
    Owner decided to build the engine instead of replacing it with a second hand one. So we got to work and bought another cylinder head and took everything to the machine shop to be checked and replaced. Once all the engine parts were back we started putting it back together. Long and boring video about the life of a mechanic. How boring and long can days be.
    Enjoy , thanks for watching

    Another great V8 video!
    I’m sorting out an issue with my S4 V8, wondering if you’ve seen it before.
    Someone has previously had the timing kit replaced, looks recently done but when I bought the car it was running in limp mode.
    Now with the timing kit exposed I can confirm the uprated guides are fitted but the bank 2 cam tensioner isn’t working correctly.
    It’s in the closed position and the chain is slack, I can lever the tensioner so it opens and takes up the slack but then it closes again.
    Either an issue with the timing or a faulty tensioner, I’ll find out in the next few days but was wondering if you had ever seen anything like that?

    I just saw this video today. it looks like those oil squirters have 3 bolts that hold them to the block, 2 near the cylinder walls and one down in the block to hold the tubes for the pressure feed. it looks like on the last oil squirter, that you torqued the 2 near the cylinder walls but missed the middle one or it didn't get filmed at least.

    Great video, Thank you! I wonder why are you not using any assembly lube on chain guides? Also why are you not covering rubber gaskets with oil before placing them into their place?

    • @jamesmedina2062
      @jamesmedina2062 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the chains probably were pre-oiled and that's good enough for the guides, but I think they had lube myself from the looks of it. As far as the gaskets, you don't have to add oil when there is not movement over the gasket as you would see with something like an o-ring

    • @spaceboundmg
      @spaceboundmg 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jamesmedina2062 Assembly lube is being used to provide lubrication to moving parts before oil pressure is built, i believe you already know that. Just to oil the chains before installing them is not enough to prevent unnecessary wear before oil pressure is built.
      As for the gaskets, it is known that oil is preventing/slowing down the degradation of them, so it would be great to just oil them up before installing. These steps are not that important to some people but if you think about it, whole engine has to be removed for some of these gaskets to be replaced, wouldnt it be smart to just put some oil on them?

    • @jamesmedina2062
      @jamesmedina2062 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@spaceboundmg my opinion is that the materials we are discussing are either tough or they are delicate. If so delicate, they should not be used to begin with. We all know about the Subaru silicone debacle. Using too much silicone and the silicone not having the proper toughness. I would need to know more about the silicone rubber gaskets and my ignorance wins the day today. As for the chain guides, they will not get a pressured oil layer, simply some oil so by design as stated before it must be a very tough material to work in that job.

    I see you used LOCTITE 648 as the thread locking compound. Understand that is a retaining compound that is a bit stronger than their locking compounds. Do you typically use this when rebuilding engines on threads that require thread lock? I am asking because I am about ready to start building up a 4.2L BAR engine from a Q7 and trying to decide what to use 243, 267, or 648 🤔. My second question “Sorry” I have noticed you have the engine on the engine stand but in most of your builds you end up finishing on a table. Is this due to the weight or just easier to work around. I currently have my stripped block on a stand but held from the front and wondering if I should invest in a table? Thank you and loving all your videos.
