I have a Magik test I do on any engine I get deep involved with - I give it to a son to drive for a bit. If anything is going to break, they'll break it. If it doesn't break, I can pass it on to a customer with confidence. I call it Son Diagnostics.
Was that cheaper than sourcing a new engine? Incredible job at such a low mileage. What driver would neglect a belt change , if that is what they did. You have enormous patience and experience. Top mechanic good to see nowadays.
I've seen water pumps freeze in the past due to lack of anti freeze. Come out on a cold morning and start it with frozen coolant and boom, belt stripped, valves bent etc etc.
Great job satisfaction rebuilding an damaged engine ex VW tech 95nl to 2010. Like the way your keeping the wagon for a day or so to idle and put a few miles on make sure it's going OK and no oil leaks and give back happy to the customer. Serious attention to detail most garages don't lap valves change seals they send that to the machine shop. Look up a guy called. Daves auto shop USA.. 40 years engine builders you would love his videos mate
I had my auxiliary belt come off into the cam belt on a 2.0 cffb tiguan at 50mph on M5, no broken rockers but spun cam's, used bore scope and no marks on pistons, left head on and fitted genuine vw cams, not cheap at £1300, didn't use a special tool either and did it same way as you, got 600 miles on it now since doing it and it drives well
Very good that 👌 not many garages will take this job on perfer to have small jobs and easy ones I had a leon 2.0tdi 2010 what 1 camshaft spun too it only had 105k on clock
Good job, I think for the time it would have taken, I would have recut the valve seats, I just happen to be best mates with the local engine guy in my town, so it would have been a quick job if it was mine
Good work - vw haldex unit similar - they don't do any refurb parts only a whole unit, but you can buy bearings and clutch basket parts aftermarket - and it's an easy fix
These engines are the best part of £8k for a recon if I remember rightly. I've done one very similar to this and it still worked out cheaper to repair the original engine
@sammytheseal2307 fair play - looks a mammoth task to the untrained eye. I wouldn't fancy a bill for the rebuild or replacement, but it's bloody good to see this done, especially as it's all in-house
Hi Baz, It's unreal that you can strip down the front end in as little as 20 mins. Doing that really did give you a huge amount of room. Have to say, that was an amazing build! Your knowledge and skillset is bloody amazing. Keep up the good work, and keep the content coming 👍👍
@@PTRsTransport all these vehicles now are designed that the front ends come off easily, which makes these kid of jobs easy, Audi have a similar design to replace the timing belt it's called a service position
timing belt needs change ==> also new waterpump and rollers and tensioner, 'no that's too expensive; ===> waterpump getting stuck ===>timingbelt fails ===> very very very big bill trying to repair the engine. Remember the pistons were hitting the valves so the rodbearings and crankshaft bearings have suffered too
If you want the pump to last fit a genuine VW , the aftermarket kits are using cheaper and cheaper parts from the white box no name suppliers with a fortune cookie to tell you it will fail soon.
Great job Baz the satisfaction on doing a job like this very very satisfying you turn the key with your butt cheeks nipped and it runs like a dream great work Baz top lad 👍🇬🇧
I recently had my T5 engine rebuilt after a snapped timing belt, and I had a turbo recon done. Since then I have been experiencing a turbo overboost fault with code P0234. Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice on what it could be? thankyou
wow once again if they designed a engine if the timing belt fails then no valves hit would be better cars are just a money bank with all their sensors ECM etc how is joe blogs meant to pay for the repairs the labour charges are terrible watched a your tuber diagnosics charge 2hours up front at £94 per hour
Superb video Baz, you have to be very patient and methodical when doing engine rebuilds, just like you emphasise in your commentary. Doubling checking and referencing as you go. I suspect very few main dealers have anyone who could do this kind of work and it would be outsourced unbeknown to the customer! Your garage is a little gem, and it is no wonder you are stowed out with work. You genuinely enjoy your work which is also a rarity these days 👍😎
Videos like this make me wish I’d become a mechanic. Putting an engine together then hearing it run is awesome.
Me too
Motors are a nightmare….. just watch these videos & keep your temper intact 👍
It is fun doing engines .if the boss is good lol.lots of patience with proper specs .🍺
Trust me iv spent 15 years in horrors not worth it definitely
Not many garages do their own heads these days they generally send them to engine reconditioners good to see
spent my apprentiship lapping in valves happy days with the paste still got a sucker in my garage brilliant content

Bloody glad i didnt have to do a turbo on a transporter i worked on other day . Some man hours that. Excellent work!
Great vid Baz, Wow, so much work involved in doing a job like that!
Top job Baz! You make this stuff look easy (and we know it isn't!)

Some do fail early sometimes due to antifreeze leaking on the belt from water pumps
@johncoldwell340 that was starting to happen with my fiesta. Had to replace the water pump fast
@@tomdude75unfortunately seen premature water pump failure nearly all makes and models

Well done, especially hitting the newly built valves with a hammer, (rubber/hide) a lesson I learned painfully years ago on pushrod engines.
Bet that customer had a nice bill...
Meanwhile great workmanship...👍
Great vid Baz and awesome job as usual.

Ticking over like a singer sewing machine mi mam had one of those machines 😁
Top work mate . Expensive fix .
Proper meat and potatoes job. Wonderful 👏👏👏👍😊
Takes me back 40 years,... Lot more to do on the engines today.... 👍

well done baz top job aswell.
love the videos !
mentioned this on tiktok
owner didn't wana pay to change the cambelt and water pump.
but happy to pay for an engine rebuild.
A job well done. 👍
Great video, as others have Said quite rare for the head rebuild to be done in house and not just sent away, true mechanic skills 👍
Well done Baz booshhh
TOP JOB ONCE AGAIN 👌👌
Great video! Was the smoke test the same as a cylinder leak down test? Any pros and cons as to why you would use one over the other?
Awesome, this.
At what point do you draw the line and replace the engine entirely?

24 years

did you have the head refaced/
How do they lap the valves in at engine manufacturers it would be very un Closetful to do every one by hand
What was the brand of the old water pump and timing belt? Can you share the brand name please

all mechanics want be every smarter than the manufacturer. this guy did couple mistakes
And......
The $64,000 question is ...
Did this job cost £64,000?
With all that SUPERManpower :) , was it cheaper to do that than buy a replacement engine?
Interference engines...... Interfering with our wallets :)
Thing is with 2nd hand engines you don't know what you are getting atleast with this you know where you are
all mechanics think special tools was made for fun and for idiots
£2-3000 Bill?
I'd say more 3k than 2..
