  • Today I tested out a set of light spruce wood arrows and a set of heavier cedar arrows with my primitive bow. Both are in the same spine range (40-45).
    Conclusion: Up until about 30 meters, the heavier ones work better, my shots are more tightly grouped and it tends to be more forgiving, but at the higher distances the speed of the lighter arrows makes up for that. I am impressed by how much faster the lighter ones are. The heavy arrows weigh about 410-420grains, the lighter ones about 310-320 grains total.

    I was shooting 11/32 wood arrows (pine) with my 50# longbow. They shot great but I recently started shooting my new 23/64 cedar arrows. They weigh in at 600 grains. My draw length is 30.5” so my bow pulls @ just over 58#. When using the thinner/lighter wood arrows I had some hand shock. Now there is hardly any shock with the cedars and my bow is actually quieter. Arrow speed dropped a bit but nothing dramatic. Check out my recent videos about this. Cheers and great shooting.👍😎🇨🇦🏹

    Mind sharing the specs for the lighter arrow? I can’t seem to get any below 350 grains total arrow weight even with a spruce shaft. My bop is even shorter at 28” with 70grains and 3” fletch. What’s yours?

    Those are about 100 grains difference between the two sets. What point weight did you use on them?

    • @TheDayne
      @TheDayne  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      70 grain points on the 5/16 arrows, 100grain points on the 11/32 arrows. Weight difference was ~ 100-110 grains.

    Nice shooting. How wood you compare wooden arrows to aluminum? thanks

    • @TheDayne
      @TheDayne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Wood is a natural material, so ofc it is less reliable than materials like carbon or aluminum - every shaft is a little bit different than the other. I've never shot aluminum arrows, so I can't really compare.

    I understand write, full wooden bow? not laminated?

    • @TheDayne
      @TheDayne  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Miko_Archer Yes! It is a not laminated bow made of one piece of dogwood. Crafted by a good friend of mine. Only natural material, no epoxy, no glue, no fiberglass, just wood.

    How long,are you cutting those arrows???

    • @TheDayne
      @TheDayne  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cut my arrows about 1,5" longer than my drawlength, so those are 29,5".

    thats not a longbow

    • @TheDayne
      @TheDayne  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Scandinavian Huntsman no its not, its a Flatbow design. but in many places everything that has a D-shape will be called a longbow out of convenience. we dont need to over-categorize everything.

    • @hugoakerlund5114
      @hugoakerlund5114 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      LongbowArchery a longbow is supposed to be taller than its user thats all and that flatbow is way shorter than you

    • @TheDayne
      @TheDayne  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Only when you talk about the english longbows. The word longbow can have more meanings than that. I mostly shoot modern longbows which are, correctly spoken, modern flatbow designs. Still they are called longbows in most if not all archery associations (IFAA, WA, IBO,...). So, like I said before, no need to over-categorize things. I know that historically spoken, a english longbow is a certain design and that a flatbow is another design. Both shoot very similar though and come in a D-shape. So to not confuse the average archer, I think it is OK to both call them a "Longbow".
