  • If you have been looking for how to overseed your lawn in the spring, look no further than this step by step complete guide to spring overseeding! I discuss all you need to know and understand before seeding cool season lawns in the spring, as well as an easy to follow guide so you can seed like a pro and fix that ugly lawn. Straight to the overseeding steps at 4:40
If you have excess thatch you can certainly dethatch before seeding, and could also core aerate if you would like. Using a roller to press the seed into the ground is fine too if you happen to have one. As long as the seed gets to the soil layer, is covered by a thin layer of peat moss or something similar, you will be good.

One reminder is seed needs to touch soil...if you need to dethatch or aerate before seeding, that can help too. If the yard is thin like mine, put seed on and cover it with a light layer and you'll be good :)

Try putting the whole peat moss brick in a wheelbarrow and breaking it apart with a shovel (like you’re mixing concrete for 60sec) then just shovel it into the spreader. That’ll save you a BUNCH of time. You should be able to fill the spreader 2x with every brick.

It seems from this video that overseeing can help with that a lot. It shall be my first "major" lawn project. Sadly, from the advice here, I'll have to wait until September.

I should have watched this a month and a half ago. I over seeded, the weather turned unseasonably cold here in Missouri, and the old grass is almost ready to mow before the new grass has really started germinating. The Garden Center website also says "Grass seed sown the first week in March has a 10-week head start on the weed and insect season that begins mid-May." Which the only thing that needs more mowing than the old grass is a few patches of Purple Dead-nettle, which I don't want to pull up and disrupt my seed, nor am I sure I can safely spray it off at this time.
I do have a little seed and the clay soil cover, they told me to use instead of peat moss, left so I can do some touch up in the fall. But they didn't tell me to do anything for weeds, nor to check soil temperature any. Hopefully with a bit of work and patience I can still save it enough to just need a small touch up in the fall and not fell like I wasted a rather sizeable amount of work, already and still working for the foreseeable future.

the peat moss spreader is good but hard to find a rental. And for occassional use a bit expensive to buy. also it cloggs up if the soil is too damp. your buddy Grass Daddy used a Grounds Keeper II rake. I have one and I just tested it out for spreading peat moss and it worked amazingly well on damp ground leaving a 1/8 to 1/4 layer with easy raking and it was fast. Saves me a 40 mile drive to rent one. its also great for dethatching ,leaves, etc.

How nice of that man to make that for you! It's wonderful and he should market them, if not already doing so. I reseeded my entire front yard by hand about 5 years ago. You know it's nice when the neighbors compliment it. 🙂 I plant only fescue and love it. Sadly, we have had sooooo many high winds in TX that it has mixed some bermuda (sp). I hate it because it's the last to get green and the first to get brown. I'm reseeding some areas, so I hope to get it back to "compliment" stage. 🙂 Those ended this year. My backyard is a work in progress because it is full of weeds, again, due to VERY high winds blowing at least 5 different kinds of weeds, and still has some occasional junk grass. I'm not a chemical person because of random feral cats, but I may have to rethink it. I've been using salt and vinegar and it works great, but they appear again before I blink an eye in March. Yours gives me a motive to continue. :) Thanks.

For peat moss bags, I will pick them up and drop them on the ground a couple times to get the insides broken up a little. Take the bag and put it in the wheelbarrow, take a utility knife to cut the face of the bag open so that I can get my shovel in there to break it up a little more and then shovel into the peat moss spreader.

I bought that pear moss spreader from Amazon, at little pricey but worth it if this is something you do regularly in your own yard or for a business. Very sturdy as well

Just as an FYI I bought/ordered one of those peat moss/top soil spreaders. I did a major renovation last year and that was enough for me considering I have 1 major renovation and a smaller one lined up for this year.

So loading that Peat Moss spreader. What you so is lay your bag of Peat Moss Flat. Take a knife and cut the bag right down the middle longways then cut at the ends corner to corner so it ends up like a capital letter I. Then take your round shovel and start slicing the Peat inside the bag but not all of it just what your going to shovel into the Spreader. Once the peat in the bag say 1/2 of it is gone just use the shovel and break it up inside the bag. What this does is it makes the Peat fine in the bag and then easy to shovel right into the Spreader. No mess and when your done easy to pick up the bag. Good luck its like everything it requires practice.

same. only thing that I do in addition is throw the bag onto the ground a couple times and roll it a bit before putting it into the wheelbarrow and cutting it open

    Thanks Ryan
Your methods do work,I live in the North East, unfortunately I did some lawn renovations last fall and I should looked out for the weather conditions, all the seeds that were planted were washed away,so I did a sloppy job reseeding, all I got as a result was weeds and empty spots, will have to kill the weeds and grass and start all over again in the fall but all n all your methods are the right way in establishing a nice looking lawn
    Thanks
    JK

Perfect video right before I overseed as I just finished scarifying! I pulled my back from all of the work (I hate being tall.. always end up pulling it somehow). So once I can walk right I will be overseeding and applying a starter fertilizer :)

This is awesome! I'm sad that I'm just now learning about you! I have a nice size lawn (in Southern California) that is in dire need of attention. It's been a love hate relationship; I love the size of the lawn but hate the condition. I'll be watching a lot of your videos and I'll keep you posted on the progress to let you know how your "students" are doing. Have a GREAT weekend.

Whats cool is noticing all of your neighbors yards compared to your golf course fairway/green lawn. Have a Swardsman ordered and cant wait to start using it with my new lawn. I live at a golf course, my lawn was hydro seeded last year. It was the greenest yard so far this spring. I am to only one mowing my lawn with a manual reel mower.

I've always had a thing for a nice lawn, have always had the nicest lawn on my street, but still wanted to up my game. I had never overseeded before so gave it a go about 10 days ago, including weed treatment and aeration. I'm definitely seeing much less weeds and that's HUGE, though I may need a second treatment in areas, and I'm definitely seeing new growth in the areas where the grass was a little thinner. But frankly it's hard to say if there's new growth in the lawn in general. I suspect that change is a little more subtle though, so will wait and see. But no weeds and growth in the thinner areas were my key objectives, so mission accomplished there. Love your vids, btw. Keep em comin!

The first five minutes of this video where you explain risks of overseeding when trying to deal with a crabgrass problem were very informative. I had a sizable crabgrass problem in a portion of my lawn last year. This year I am first dealing with the crabgrass. I will worry about any bare spots in the fall.
I remember when I was growing up my dad used a peat moss spreader to plant his lawn. He still has it. Unfortunately it is on the west coast and I am in Rhode Island.

I just threw down seed this weekend to cover my bare spots that didn’t take from the reno last year. Straight kbg. I’m in for a long wait again lol. Hopefully the smaller spots fill in on their own this year I think it’s mature enough now to start spreading on its own hopefully. Oh yeah and that peat moss roller holt crap that’s seriously a game changer!! That thing is frickin awesome!

With the huge bags of peat moss like that I've started dumping the hole thing onto the ground and breaking it up by stepping on it or using yard tools, then scooping it up into my wheel barrow or empty trash bin... I couldn't stand doing it any other way haha. Wouldn't be ideal to do outside if it's windy out though

Here's a tip for the peat moss spreader. Lift it into a wagon or wheelbarrow to fill it. Anything that spills will stay in the wagon instead of piling up on the grass. it also helps to break up the moss first and wet it just a little bit. Just barely damp.
