I just spent my weekend scalping, dethatching, top dressing and overseeing my 6000 sqft lawn. I have never been so exhausted in my life. Much more manual labor than I anticipated. Good luck to you and your lawn. Hope the hard work pays off!
Ryan, Last year I was about to scrape off my old lawn and have sod laid down. Then I watched many of your videos and bought your manuals on overseeding. I followed everything exactly. I had the most amazing lawn I've ever had. One I always dreamed I wanted. I can't thank you enough for the encouragement and sound professional advice. A million times better than any other "experts" on the web. Will continue this year. Love PR!!
I have a great guy that aerates my yard for half what anyone else charges, but his plugs are only one to one and a half inches. The machine I used to rent pulled plugs much larger. Does size matter here?? Also, I think aeration is the best thing you can do to any yard. I’ve been doing it for over 30 years with incredible results. People are always stopping by and asking how much I fertilize and water and I tell them hardly at all. I also do the recommended things like cutting high when it’s warm and dry, mowing in different directions, keeping the blades sharp, etc.
I used that Scotts turf builder this spring with my overseeding and it's doing a great job. Dandelions and clover come up and turn white pretty fast. Crab grass seems to get through though.
re: your crabgrass: Quinclorac. Make sure your turf grass type is in the "highly tolerant" list (ex: PRG is highly tolerant; st. augestine is NOT). Two applications two weeks apart per the instructions and manufacturer rates should be enough to quell your crabgrass. I use a surfactant to make sure it 'sticks'. Do not mow 2 days prior to application. Do not irrigate for 24 hours after application. And, do not apply in hot temperatures (right now, most of the country need not worry about that).
With those walk behind aerators it's all about technique. I worked for a company using those for 2 months straight. First day I was dead, then once I learned the proper techniques of maneuvering and it wasn't much worse than just push mowing
Ive always power raked after aerating so it chews up the plugs and speads it nicely as a quasi-top dress. Also spreading some compost over an overseeded lawn produces great results.
Great info Ryan! Watched It with my coffee in hand, I would like to get out in the yard today, but there's also baseball and hockey. I gotta say I am a little jealous of both your lawn and your weather.
How soon after aeration should you seed? I aerated a couple days ago but won’t be able to seed and water for another 4 or 5 days. Let me know if any tips. Thx!
About to overseed 2 acres of perennial rye grass with a frontier 2058 overseeder. This after spraying roundup on some patches of field grass that has taken hold over the years and mottled my yard up.
Would love to see a review on some of the cordless dethatchers out there. Makita just launched one on their 40V line. Hoping EGO eventually follows suit.
Can you please do a video on how to get this type of lawn on really compacted red clay soil? It’s hard as a brick when dry and slick as owl poo when wet.
Hey Ryan, appreciate all the content! Question about mowing post over seeding - will you wait until the new grass gets to a certain height, or when do you make the call to resume mowing? Thanks!
I'm watching this closely to make sure it doesn't get too tall. I may get out and mow it before I see germination but after that you just have to tread lightly on those first few mows and it turns out fine as long as you're careful.
Good stuff! I’m about to overseed and follow this to a T! I have some pretty bare spots. Do you have any suggestions for dog traffic? I have 2 beagles that spend a fair amount of time outside. Should I fence off most of the yard(3000 sqft), or will they not affect the baby seedlings too much? Thanks
I have Bermuda in my backyard around 500 sq feet. It’s not doing as good as the first 2-3 years. I have about ~70 sq feet of one area that weeds took over and grass is pretty much non existent. Yea I’m curious as well.. I want to overseed kbg but I feel like I will just create fungus with the rest of my healthy grass, due to the amount of water needed for the seeds

What do you think of the aerators you pull behind a tractor/mower?
Not many cores pulled from those so you would have to go over it a ton of times

For an established/old lawn: would spraying humic acid prior to laying seed be beneficial?
Shouldn't make a big difference in establishing new seed

I'm sure it will recover with time
@ryanknorrlawncare some spots still look a little low. Then again it's been 4 days. Can I toss some seed in those areas?
@@ryanknorrlawncare sorry I just worry a lot and I have a nice lawn so hoping I diddnoy fuck it up ha
Does Lawn Rebel have a Knorr shirt?
He does
Starter fert works best after the seed has germinated. Most of the the nitrogen will be gone before the seed pops
Usually I wait a few days before applying but we have possible storms coming so I wanted to be able to get it down before it gets too wet to be out there.
According to what i have in my head mesotrione is not compatible with fine fescue, it will kill it.
Pls, check if you can use such seeding fertilizer for fine fescue.
Yes if it was 100% fine fescue it would not be recommended. It can be used if the mixture is less than 20% fine fescue I believe
@@ryanknorrlawncareDoes that mean I shouldn't use the Scott's you used in this video with Jonathan Green Black Beauty?
Podcast when?
Hopefully soon. Both RD and I seem to get busier with each passing year
My neighbors lawns are already growing like crazy. Mine is not doing anything. So I dont even know if I need overseeding. Some bare spots but it looks like there are some green blades
I'd give it a little time. Some people hammer fertilizer early on for green up but when it's growing inches per day pretty soon, they will regret it 😀
@@ryanknorrlawncare thank you
@@ryanknorrlawncareRyan, is there a “perfect” fertilizers that will green things up, but not grow the hell out of the grass? That would be ideal. Enjoy green lawn without mowing every three days or so! Thx
I planted some of your magical Rye on Friday. How we see if I can keep it alive in summer🤣
Pray that it actually rains every once in a while!
@@ryanknorrlawncare and that we don’t have 70+ days over 90🤣
@@jfarm_1311 yeah..that too 😀
Blue and white is your color!
Always good info! I thinned out my lawn a little too much last fall and need to top dress and over seed this year. I also have a lot of clay out here in Northwest Oregon. Aeration might be a good idea.
Have you heard of Fireball grass seed?
I saw a video of a guy using a snowblower as a dethatcher lol
No way! Link or it never happened!!
Why not seed then drag? Seems seed could go in the holes.
I’m 117th to post.
I will never understand why a person comments to complain about someone else commenting that they were the first to comment
🎉
yeah, every home owner has those lawn tools in their shed. LMFAO
Ryan, this does not look like your backyard
