    One of the best decisions I made was to get rid of careless lawn man. Repeatedly told him he was cutting my fescue too low, and had a lot of bare spots. He told me grass would not grow in shaded areas. Once I raised mower to 3 inches and consistent mowing, grass filled in, and lawn looked better than ever. I wasted a ton of money paying lawn man that was stubborn and cut everyones grass same level regardless of type of grass. Some of these lawn services are just about quantity and how fast they can mow your lawn and get paid. There is no lawn care, just lawn mowing.

    • @Megatron_83
      @Megatron_83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I refuse to pay lawn service companies a dime for these exact reasons. Carelessness is something I can’t pay someone for haha My neighbor across the street use one of these local lawn care companies and they were looking at my lawn in awe of how much better and healthier my lawn is compared to the crap job they are doing over there.

      i have a cool season lawn, Kentucky blue mix just the cheap constractor sod, so does everyone else in my entire neighborhood. A question i wondered about related to this is that people in my neighborhood who have the absolute best looking greenest thickest lawns are always cut the shortest. The lawns that look patchy are ones that grow out more. Any reason why this would be?

    • @SeanHayesParleys
      @SeanHayesParleys ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Brett_NebraskaThere are quite a few factors that may be in play here. One might be irrigation. How often, what time of day, and how much do your neighbors with enviable lawns waste? What is their soil structure like compared to others? Have they added topsoil and organic compost to there lawn each Spring for many years? Do they test their soil and match their soil with the comparable organic fertilizers? Using those same tests, do they also add any micronutrients the grass needs to really thrive? Do they aerate their lawn once or twice a year? Do they utilize verticutting and power raking? Your neighbors with spectacular lawns could probably reel mow their lawns to putting green height (adjusting irrigation of course) because they schedule and do these things and more.

    Wow, I started watching you maybe four years ago and I’ve learned a lot from you. I know you have a lot of projects going on, I really see this video as you getting back to the basics. For me my lawn has never looked better and has never been healthier than it is now. I have to thank you for that but I also have a lot of people that I watch in different videos that have helped me. I really like the way you made it about the basics, I feel like as a homeowner we all have very little time to spend on the lawn but we want the most impact of our time.As I watch this video I see the things that I need to focus on which is the basic sort of a kiss approach(keep it simple s\]ped:). I get approached all the time at work because my friends and coworkers know I’m very passionate about my lawncare so they ask me what they should do. I always go back to what I’ve been shown in time is to know your lawn, keep it at the 1/3 rule, feed the lawn when it needs it but focus on the soil first. I think this video is some of your best work I really appreciate the content , I hope to see more of this. That way when someone asked me what they should do to their lawn I can just share your content.

    My issue here I just bought my first home last June and this year I started taking care of it. I did ortho spray for the weeds two applications because on Wisconsin it’s been raining a ton. Last Wednesday I did my first crab grass granular by Scott’s. Hope I am doing it right :) learning a lot from your channel and hope to get my yard looking nice :)

    I live in the mountains of New Mexico, and we didn't have a lawn at our prior house. We moved into a new house, had one summer, and my husband had the lawn looking great. Unfortunately, he passed away from cancer treatment complications that winter, and I had no idea what I was doing last summer with the lawn. The snow finally melted (we are at 7,500 feet) and the lawn is not looking great this spring. (Plus, we have a Weimaraner puppy who has created a bunch of burn spots in the back. And, she came back inside the house with several pieces of the irrigation system she dug out. So, I have a lot of repair work to do.) Thanks for all the info.

Yes I had grubs so now I will be treating it for it right before the hot summer season kicks off and going to try to do a little seeding before the hot summer so don’t forget to treat your lawn for ten- highly recommend it.

    I also noticed you're sharpening with a grinder. Using a flapper/sandpaper wheel will give you a better edge without being really aggressive with the removal of the metal. The softer pad makes it easier to sharpen, and the blades last longer. I mow Zoysia which is very dense, so I have two sets of blades and I sharpen then at the same time, than mow the Zoysia up front with the sharp blade, then move to the back that I still need to renovate. Then I may or may not replace the blades for the next mowing. If I'm mowing at 1.5 inches, I'll swap each time. If I'm mowing at 2 inches, I may mow a 2nd time before sharpening. I was going to start a sharpening business for mainly beauty shears and I was in the process of talking to manufacturers when COVID hit and kind of ruined those plans, and I've been sharpening for 46 years now, using both grinders and flapper pads, and I really prefer the sandpaper discs. I sharpen the main side fairly close to 30 degrees, then make one gentle pass on the back to remove the burr. My goal isn't razor sharp, but I could easily cut steaks at that point. However, people think of a mower blade as a blunt tool, almost. It's sharped to a 30 degree bevel on one side, and flat on the other. Most kitchen knives are 15-17 degrees on each side (depending on blade hardness and type of steel - VG-10 is a good all around metal for kitchen blades), so although thinner, it's about the same bevel angle as a mower blade, just with less beefy blade backing it up. As often as I change blades, I use one of those one size fits all sockets that have the push pins in the middle. It cannot stand up to the torque required to break the bolt free...I broke my first one trying, but once you break the bold loose, that in a battery powered drill make it really quick to remove the bolts and replace them after. What works well for one may not work well for another, so try it and see how it goes. Now if I could just get my wife to stop cutting meat using my very fine edged Sashimi knife while on a plate instead of a cutting board...(sigh). I'm constantly sharpening that blade. As far as soil temps, I aim for 45-50 degrees. I'd rather be early and safe than have some silly issue and end up applying too late. The microbes are so dormant at those temperatures that it really doesn't negatively impact the pre-emergent duration, especially with prodiamine sitting so high in the soil. That Spectracide is great for newbies, but Q4 is a more cost effective version of the same herbicide mix. Speedzone is better overall in my opinion for general wide coverage. You could have expanded on the Crabgrass control. Crabgrass dies off at the first hard frost, so it's not worth spending the money late in the season to kill crabgrass. Just do a good pre-emergent plant and get ahead of it for next year.

      You can use that in place of any of the other liquid fertilizer apps. It's really been working well in a spoon feeding program.

    Hi Ryan! I very much appreciate your channel and am eager to watch all of your videos! I do have a question--do you have any advice or a video addressing how to care for Xenon Zoysia? Our grass in the South came out of dormancy about a month and a half ago and we already have brown areas, since it's been an unusually hot spring. Is it true that watering while the sun is out acts as a magnifying glass and burns the blades? Thank you for any help!! Signed, wife caretaker

    Hey Ryan, love your channel and love your content. I'm in East Tennessee near Knoxville... lots of clay. Long story short, my wife and I built a house last year and I specifically told my builder I wanted tall fescue because it does very well in my area. Well, they essentially scattered what they called "contractors blend" and very poorly at that. They did zero soil ammendments and 100% didn't aerate the lawn. So now I have this God awful mix of grasses and weeds and huge barren spots that are horrid. I absolutely hate my lawn... should I go rent a skid steer with a Harley rake and absolutely annihilate my yard and start from scratch or are there more cost effective measures you'd recommend? I'd love to send you pictures of what I'm dealing with to get your expert advice.

    Transition zone truth - Yes, you can grow either cool season or warm season turfs, which is great. But on the flip side, neither will thrive as well as they would so you have that struggle as well. I'm just north of Richmond, VA and my first hard frost is about the 3rd week of October, and the green fades to tan around the end of November. Come March, if I've mowed down to 1" anyway, the lawn is greening up by the middle of March. I like Zoysia because where cool season grasses are struggling in the middle of the summer heat, my Zoysia is thriving well. Most people entertain outdoors in the summer, so that's when warm season turfs grow best, so that's part of the reason I chose Zoysia, while my neighbors are entertaining people in a mix of dormant and stressed cool season lawns, even the well kept and striped fescue lawns.

    Hi. I live in Dallas, Texas and my parent's lawn hasn't had real grass for the past 20 yrs now. Their lawn has been covered with various 8 different types of weeds covering their entire lawn. Their sprinkler system pipes are broken too, so I tried to irrigate it with a 360° hose spray irrigation every night. My mom wants thick grass, on her lawn (I don't know what is the name of the thick grass that can tolerate drought soil lawn) so I'm trying to help them renovate their ugly lawn to look like a healthy beautiful lawn in the neighborhood in this 105°F, humidity of 80% 🥵 weather. All my neighbors have a beautiful lawn. My parent's lawns have been ugly for the past 30 yrs. 🥶😱😳🥺😰😭 I care for my dad that suffers from Alzheimer's and cancer. My dad used to do all the lawn work and outdoor handyman housework. Now I'm doing his work, but trying to learn some basics on TH-cam of how to care for my parent's lawn in the right way in the early morning. 🤭
    I can't afford all the lawn care machines shown in your videos. What are the best budget machines or tools you could recommend to remove bad weed grass, before putting/laying fertilizers in?!

    Hi Ryan! Great video! I’m just starting fertilization and weed control as a business this year in MN. I waited till soil temps were above 50 consistently and laid down granule fertilizer with pre and post emergent. One lawn has tons of dandelion in a couple spots/ others have yellowing weeds ie charlie, clover and dandelion but the grass doesn’t look great. I’m headed to spray herbicide Monday. I’m just so nervous to kill the entire lawn 😖 I feel a bit better after watching ur vid. I have pics if you would like to give me your opinion. I would be grateful!

      In any business you're going to have questions to learn more about something. Unsuccessful people are too arrogant to admit they don't know something in order to improve. TH-cam has proven to be a great resource for exactly that, answering questions, for millions of people and billions of answers. Don't be a tool :)

      Jen, I know this is a year behind, but it sounds like a pH test for both lawns may be in order. It could be a pH imbalance isn't allowing for adequate absorption of the fertilizer, etc. Curious if you have had better results in the one year since your original post.

    Part of it, I live in Poland and I have a lawn of about 800m² + a house. In the season, when I water my lawn well and nourish it, I have to mow it twice a week. It's not the best quality (turf, pitch) but it's ok for me. I'm thinking about a robotic mower - what's your opinion about it (I currently have an OleoMac 53 mower)?

    Great information as always. I moved a year ago and the yard is not exactly thriving. I'm torn between trying to "save" it or doing a full renovation (on the front yard) and this makes me have a little more hope in improving what I already have. However, I think I have some quackgrass in my front yard (lighter in color, thicker blades, and grows quite fast) so I can't decide what to do about that. Also, can I do a soil test if I put pre-emergent down this spring or will that skew the test?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be fine on the soil test if it was pre-emergent without a fertilizer mixed in. Long term we did end up doing a full renovation on this yard and it's never looked better. I recommend the full reno eventually but learning the steps with what you have is easier than going straight to a full reno.

  • @ventsyv

    I have more weeds than grass - crab grass, clover, moss, you name it. I sprayed weed control couple of weeks ago and got most of it. I cut the grass short yesterday and put some seed down on the bold spots. Also eyeballed some Scotts Turf Builder lawn food fertilizer. A moderate rain felt a couple of hours later.
    I plan to apply a weed & feed (Scotts again) in a couple of weeks. Will try to cut it weekly to 3 inches.
    We'll see how it turns out - even a moderately thicker and fuller lawn will be great!

      It sounds like you are doing everything you should be doing to have it come in nice, healthy, and thick this year. If it is kind of thin in areas, you may want to overseed now too and get that going. It'll help fill it in.
      Good luck, you're doing exactly what you should be it sounds like. 👍🏼
