    Can you seed in the spring? Yes.
    _Should_ you seed in the spring? _That_ is the real question.
    My general rule of thumb is, if you have large shade trees, seed in the spring. If you don't, seed in the fall. What most of the TH-cam lawn guys never tell you is they usually don't have large shade trees because large shade trees significantly complicate keeping a think healthy lawn. If you try to seed in the fall with large shade trees around you run into a few problems... 1) until they drop their leaves, they're going to block out most of the light and that makes it very difficult for the grass seedlings to mature. (They'll sprout, but won't do much after that) 2) once the trees do eventually start dropping their leaves, then it is a constant battle to keep the leaves from suffocating the new grass. And the more you work to keep the leaves off the grass, the more you end up treading on the new grass and you end up killing it that way.
    If you plant in the spring, you avoid those problems and your grass gets a chance to mature to the point where it can survive those problems in the fall. Yes, you have to be diligent about keeping the grass watered throughout that first summer, but at least you can control the water to some degree. Not so much with the trees.

      The issue I have is both trees and moss. I hate moss. But it’s the state plant in western WA Sate.😉. So here it’s spring thatching, aerating, seeding & top dressing.

    • @jlatham8442
      @jlatham8442 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue I have is I live in Florida with 2 huge shade trees in my backyard that cover the entire yard. There is some grass, with some sand patches. I have sand all around the outdoor patio exposing the patio foundation. It continues to be a challenge keeping grass in places and the HOA won’t allow the trees to be cut in the neighborhood. I love the shade because it allows us to enjoy the backyard without being burnt to a crisp😂 but what are my alternatives of having grass? Is it just impossible? Would sod work?

    • @ajhieb
      @ajhieb ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jlatham8442 Sandy soil and shady conditions make it a challenge for sure. I doubt you'll see much success with any of the usual warm climate grasses that are prevalent in Florida (Bermuda, etc) as they don't seem to like the shade much, but you might get some shade tolerant northern species to grow (Fine fescue?) but you'll probably need to amend your sand with some topsoil and it'll likely need frequent watering, but I would defer to someone with more experience with the native species down if Florida.

      Yep. That's the f*****" problem I have been dealing with.....lol, I'm going to have to add back and top dress at this point, and it still is only 50% better than it was , in FIVE years.....I'm doing the mesotrione/spring seed/heavy fert idea this round. I don't care what they say at this point. Haha ✌️

    • @ajhieb
      @ajhieb ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DwightKShrute Yeah, since I get some thinning in the yard pretty much every winter, my spring routine is:
      -Mesotrione+Quinclorac as soon as temps start to rise.
      -SunJoe thatching tines set on -5 (does a fantastic job of prepping bare spots for seed)
      -Overseed with KBG
      -Top dress with peat moss.
      -water daily.
      -weekly application of Scott's starter fert (with mesotrione) at a really low rate, until the turf is fairly well established. Keeps the weeds at bay, and gives the turf a fighting chance as the trees start to fill in.
      Now if I could just get rid of all the coarse fescue that's trying to take over. (probably going to need a full renovation, but I'm still in denial)

    Buffalo guy here (Go bills). Assuming you’re in Buffalo as well - I made the stupid mistake of not picking up a section of leaves in our back yard which resulted in a good size bare spot. None of the grass survived in this roughly 5x8 area. Is there a specific type of grass seed/approach you’d recommend for this time of year in Buffalo? Thanks again, very much appreciated!!

      Go Bills. I'm a die hard Bills fan but I live in Canada, I would try a Rye grass cause it's a cool season grass. Once you throw the seed down, try covering it in a thin layer of peat moss.

    I think your video is excellent. Unfortunately, for me, I live in Florida. A lot of that stuff can work, but obviously by virtue of the climate, some of it didn’t really apply for my region. I live in South Florida, which is really hot.
    Just through experience, a failure and some successes and you are right about expectations, for us, Floridians or anybody in the warmer climate I would recommend every single thing that you just said, except one really hard problem we have here and I still haven’t figured out the solution other than good old-fashioned hand pulling, while we’re watering the seeds, the weeds are growing faster than the seeds are germinating and it is so horrible. I just pulled what I can pull and hope for the best are we here are mostly broadleaf meaning they grow out into the grass like a vine, so it’s not as easy as just pulling a weed that grows vertically. To oversee the lawn, you really gotta be committed definitely rake that up because it aerates, and like you said, allows, the seat to lay out the soil so we can germinate more. You gotta be consistent with the watering,
    Fertilized twice in the summer, pre-emergent
    One one thing I’ll add, you have to also treat your lawn for insects, here in Florida. We have grub and they eat the weeds of the roots of the grass, the grass dies, and that’s how the weeds at least one of the way the weeds infiltrate treating the grass for insects and grubs, you also protect your pets from blaze and ticks, and it also deter moles from coming to your lawn because that’s what they eat so you’re cutting off their food supply and you’re allowing the grass roots to grow and get deeper and healthier.
    Sorry for such a long comment, I thought your video was excellent and thank you for sharing that with all of us, I subscribed. I’ll just apply. Also, your son, the Grass kid is adorable.

    I learned about Tenacity on TH-cam. Tenacity and other pre-emergents are so expensive in $CAD.. :( Some people said that Tenacity would make your lawn turn white and it takes weeks to recover. Did you experience that? I had crabgrass and other weeds in my lawn (front lawn is worse than backyard) last season. I don't have an irrigation system, so the watering after fall-overseeding was a pain 😅 I was at home majority of the time last year so I managed to keep up with watering seeds, but this year I won't be staying home as much. I have multiple sprinkler heads and spikes, but haven't figured out the coverage, setup and all.. I will check out your video on sprinklers! Anyhow... my front lawn is not too bad so far, but some areas in my backyard are already thinned out and blades are yellow..wherever I had put down seed rather too much is actually doing well and green at this time. I am thinking to overseed my backyard and put down pre-emergent only in the front lawn this coming Spring.. I'm still wondering if I should go with Tenacity in case front lawn gets bold spots after snow melts n need seeding. Just not sure about the bleaching by Tenacity..
    Great contents, btw!!

    I messed up last fall so I’m reseeding this spring. Just finished aerating putting down the seeds and covering the seeds with the filtered compost that I was making for last falls reseeding. This year I think I timed the rains correctly. Finished yesterday and suppose to rain for the next 5 days. I discovered that grass seeds will germinate and grow through the winter. I had a 3ft x 5ft bare patch of dirt made by my golf mat. I threw down the seeds on the broken patch of soil, stepped on them real good in November and this February the grass was actively growing. And. . . . There was a couple of snowstorms it had to make it through. I’m going to test it again because it ain’t a fact until it’s repeatable. Another test I guess is seeing how my seeding turns out for this spring. Being that this is my first time.

    • @TheLawnDaddy
      @TheLawnDaddy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only issues with seeding in the Spring is night time temps and the amount of rain. When it rains in Spring it usually down pours causing seed to wash away.
