  • The Bible mentions a book called Jasher that has been lost to history, but some claim it has been found and should be included in the Biblical Canon. Is this true?

One thing I think people need to realize on this topic is that the Bible quoting a passage does not automatically mean that the work cited is divinely inspired Scripture. All that can be inferred is that the quoted portion alone is either accurate or somehow relevant to the writer's point. The Apostle Paul quotes two pagan philosophers in his writings. That certainly doesn't mean that the pagan writings should be added to the Bible. So a "missing" book of Jasher doesn't mean the Bible is incomplete.

"What is the Book of Jasher?
The Book of Jasher is one of 13 books that are recommended reading in the Bible. Out of these 13 books only Jasher is still in existance. If we are to believe the text itself, this history book was written over 3500 years ago. It is aproximately the same age as the book of Genesis. It covers about the same period as Genesis and Exodus but has about twice as much information in it than Genesis. It answeres a lot of questions raised in Genesis."
I bought this book from the above description and, no it was not a well spent $8. Never finished it because it just was too inconsistent with the Bible and I am glad I realised it before too long even if this happened just after my christian journey had begun.

At 7:05 it is clear that the book of Jasher is a medieval fabrication because it mentions the lombards. The lombards are a Germanic tribe very far away from the place and time we would expect the book of Jasher to have been written. The lombards didn’t move south into northern Italy until A.D. 6th century. This is widely known among people that study Eastern Roman history.

@@wingedhorus1462 The versions sold currently aren't translations or copies of the original. The original Jashar existed and was quoted, but we don't have any copy of it today.
A quotation about a Germanic tribe is a proof that current prints aren't copies of an ancient writing. A proof that a current print of a book isn't a copy of an original doesn't mean an original didn't exist. In fact we know an original existed because it was quoted, but since current prints of a book titled Jashar was written in the Middle Ages such a print clearly isn't the one quoted in Joshua.
Hope that clears up the misunderstanding

Another thing l' grateful for is the Bible that l have and l find that it's canon form is enough for me. Studying it, praying through it & APPLYING it is more than enough. Contained within the Bible is enough to keep one busy for an entire lifetime and then some !. While l find these extra bilem interesting and at times quite tantalizing I am aware that such pursuits may not bare fruit. This is written not as a criticism simply an observation and a reminder firstly to myself that there can many detractions in this world and that some of them glitter like gold.

      Jasher 88:64
[64]And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Joshua, and the sun stood still in the midst of the heavens, and it stood still six and thirty moments, and the moon also stood still and hastened not to go down a whole day.
      Joshua 10:13
[13]So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
      Jasher 56:8-9
[8]And Jacob said unto Judah, I know my son that thou art a mighty man for thy brethren; reign over them, and thy sons shall reign over their sons forever.
[9]Only teach thy sons the bow and all the weapons of war, in order that they may fight the battles of their brother who will rule over his enemies.
      2 Samuel 1:18
[18]and he told them to teach the children of Judah the Song of the Bow; indeed it is written in the Book of Jasher:
And what now? I just proved you wrong. See how connected this book is with the bible. The reason why Dina was defiled is explained. The reason why the sons of Judah had to learn the how to use the bow and all weapons, was because the caananites planned to ally themselves with other kingdoms against Israel. All started when Dina was captured and defiled by the prince of Canaan.

Thank you so much for this! I am a baby Christian and just started a Bible study today. They said we were studying Hebrews, but then the instructor said we were using the book of jasher as a reference. I had heard of it before and I was interested, but unsure if it was really a book from the Bible. We spent no time in Hebrews, and the entire time in jasher. I came home and searched for the book of jasher on TH-cam. I am SO grateful for the work you have done on this book. I will ask the instructor about it, but if they decide to continue using this book then I think God wants me to find a different Bible study. Thank you!
Edited to say that I remember somewhere in Revelations that The Book is complete and nothing shall be added to, or taken away from It. I will keep my studies in the King James Bible.

The Bible, or the books that make up the canon/Bible, was not in existance at the time of John's revelation.

If someone actually looks for the events said to be in the book of Jasher, you needent look very far, look in the Bible where the accounts of those events are repeated. You will find yourself in in I & II Chronicles. "The book of Jasher" seems to just be a metaphorical reference to the book of Chronicles.

Hmm I checked out the differences mentioned here in both texts and they seem to be easily explained away. May the Lord forgive me if I’m wrong.
    1. Abraham could have left the city of Haran when 50 then the region of Haran when 75 according to scholars.
    2. It actually was 10 plagues in Jasher if read carefully. It just details each plague so much they seem like different plagues. Example the Bible mentioning locusts but Jasher telling of other animals that joined in that one animal plague. Same plague, more details.
    3. The Bible doesn’t explicitly say the sea was split into two… it just says it was split. So the 12 splits in Jasher could, by right, be an accurate inference.
So in short, Jasher could have actually been filling in what the Bible never bothered to detail to save space.
For the most part those details match though. The few discrepancies seem to be misunderstandings if anything.
I personally find the book of Jasher enlightening and revealing of difficult questions that the Bible doesn’t answer. And that’s not to discredit the Bible.
Texts that never made it into the Bible still have their value is all I’m saying.

The book of Jasher can also be called the book of the Upright One. What it was probably referring to when it was citing prophecy was when Joseph had dreams in Genesis 37:7,9. In his second dream, he said the sun and the moon and the eleven stars obeyed him. That could mean they held still at his command. But these dreams undeniably draw parallels to the commands of Joshua in Joshua 10:12-13, also considering the first dream mentioned Joseph being “upright.” Joshua was descended from Joseph’s line, through his son Ephraim.

    • @holdingpattern245
      @holdingpattern245 ปีที่แล้ว

Another oddly fitting book is Habakkuk, though quite short it literally contains a song with the line "you uncovered your bow," and shortly afterwards "sun and moon stood still in the heavens at the glint of your flying arrows," and in an earlier chapter "the enemy is puffed up, his desires are not upright, but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness," although if this were the book of Jasher it would carry some weird implications, considering that David's description of Saul in his lament sounds pretty similar to Habakkuk's description of an arrogant heathen king.

You brought up a topic about how the book of Joshua and the Illiad have similar references about the sun standing still during battle. Just a note, the book of Joshua was estimated to have been written more than 700 years before the Illiad. That most likely indicates that Jasher and Joshua and other hebrew texts influced the Greeks later on, not the reverse.

Any book that was not previously in the Jewish scripture shouldn’t be canonized it doesn’t matter. You can argue for the Maccabees and the book of Enoch because those were read in the 2nd temple period by many Jews I’m sure there are others in the deuterocanon but the only ones that I am aware of right now are those two.

Thanks for your interesting video. The book of Jasher is full of occult teachings. The real book mentioned in scripture is referring to the Book of Jubilees, (Book of the Divisions of the Times into their Jubilees and Weeks) which was found in the caves of Qumran (Muslim name, but really is Bethabara). More copies of the Book of Jubilees were found than the Book of Genesis. so the keepers of the scrolls obviously deemed it important. These were NOT the Essenes, which we have been taught by scholars, but was where John the Baptist lived because in 165 BC, the real priests fled when the temple was taken over by the wicked priests. ( the Maccabees took over the temple) In the Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English, translated by Geza Vermes, you can see that it was the Sons of Zadok who lived in Qumran (really Bethabara), not the Essenes.
When you read about John the baptist in the gospels, it all makes sense. 😊 These wicked priests were who Jesus was dealing with when he was at the temple. You can watch the video "Who Defiled the Temple?"

I wouldn't necessarily argue that, although I could suggest that this "Song of the Bow" found in 2 Samuel 1 was added to the book afterwards, almost like a historical encyclopedia with a new addition to the book itself as time passes.

Theory: the Book of Jasher is a Phoenician astronomy text. Phoenicians dominated the Mediterranean for over 500 years due to their great ability to navigate by the stars, and their language was so similar to Hebrew that the two languages were probably mutually understandable, both in spoken and written form. The mention in Joshua could refer to solar and lunar standstills, and the mention in Samuel could refer to the Little Dipper, which resembles a bow and contains the North Star.

Whenever I read in the Bible, the statement, _"Is it not written in...",_ that's a red flag for me. That is; whoever is referencing a non-Scriptural book, is noting that it *is* not Scripture, yet in common usage by people, and that that person is only quoting it, to make a point of some sort. It doesn't even mean that that person quoting it, is in agreement with it. _(How many of us have quoted Lenin or Goebbels?)_ "Is it not written in" is a form of avoidance. Avoidance in validating a book, while using something from that book, to make a point clearer defined.

I've always wondered about this honestly. It's mentioned three times as you have said, it seems (to me) to have been prophecies for the Isrealites, the promises of God, so to say. Something to akin to Issiah, Ezekiel, Amos, Joel, maybe even something like Revealtion or Daniel. I don't think we have found the real one from what I've seen of these dozens of "Jasher" books. I belive maybe Enoch wrote the real one, but was lost to time. Enoch was raptured for a reason in Genesis, since we walked with God often. (Take that as you will). So maybe he was a prophet of sorts like Elijah (who was also taken to Heaven) and wrote down sayings from The Lord our God.
So when we as believer get to Heaven, maybe we could ask God our questions. Hopefully. But, and I don't mean to be harsh, but there is a reason why we the 66 Canon. I used to be sucked into the book of Enoch (1st Enoch) myself. It took me months to break away from it since no one gave me a good answer on why it was false. Two contradictions would be that the angels built the arc of Noah and another fallen angle tempted Eve, not Satan, even though Jesus said in Revealtion that Satan was the Serpent who tempted Eve. Another contrardiction is that Enoch was called to be the son of man, savior of all. People debate about that and who translated wrong.
Another false book would be The Book of Jubbilees. It takes out the mentions of God being three persons in their retelling of Genesis. It takes out the spirit of the lord of the earth in Genesis 1, and "let us make man in our image." As well as Genesis 19:24, "then The Lord (who was in a human body) rained fire and Sulphur on Sodom and Gomrrah from The Lord out of Heaven."
Anyway as I said, not to be harsh but I wanna help people with this since helped me at all with these false books in the past.
    Amen and shalom.

      Ecclesiastes 3:15:
“That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away.”
The “natural man” cannot grasp that, for to him reality is based only on the evidence of the senses. The man of reason could justify the verse’s end, saying if it has any meaning then the writer must mean recurrence. The sun comes every day and the moon completes its cycle and the seasons come and go. If we took a picture of the universe today, the scientists can compute how long it will take to return to this point in the picture. So the intellectual man could justify the verse; but that is not what is meant, for it is addressed not to the man of reason or the man of sense, but to the man of Imagination. What is it all about? “That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been, and God seeks what has been driven away.”

Enoch has Biblical credence but the original manuscript isn’t known to us anymore. There’s Gnostic changes clearly added to the text. But nonetheless the Biblical authors Peter and Jude copied quotes and themes directly from Enoch and the context of those statements have no similarities to the Pagan references in other parts of the Bible that were quoted. They are specifically endorsing that at one point there was an authentic book. I would also point out that the Book of Job may have been written by Enoch based on the similarities in the perspective of the Author and the vocabulary used in the work.
That all said, if it’s not directly found in the known 66 books then it’s not canon and I agree with you 😉

1st off, Some that have been given a true gift of Discernment can simply read the book and know that it should have been included in the bible, esp since it was quoted in the Bible as a book to read. There are several books that have been found with ancient scrolls, yet there seems to be a certain Book of Jasher along with the Genesis Apocryphon that were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls in the year 1947. Also the Catholic Church took it upon themselves to remove so many as 75 books maybe more, who knows. Once you see that the False Prophet is of such church, you will then figure out as to why these things were removed as foretold to us in the bible by God, himself. God knows all, and with having the foreknowledge to know that the good book would be messed with. The Catholic Church finally admitted that they removed Enoch 1 from the Bible. Yes it can be confusing if you are not aware of who is who. Enoch 1 is the grandfather of Noah and he was a "just" man and escaped the first death and walked with God. If you pay attention, there were only two men that did so. There will also be two witnesses in the end days that will be killed and lay in the streets for all to see for 3.5 days. In my opinion, that would be Enoch and Elijah, since they walk with God and yet ALL men must experience the first death. It's the 2nd death that we as true followers of Christ, need to not experience, which, if we make sure that we confess to God our sins, ask for forgiveness and repent of those sins, you shouldn't worry. Also when Jesus fulfilled the 10 commandments, he created a new one and said for us all to love one another.

[13]So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, Until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies. Is it not written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
    Jasher 88:64
[64]And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Joshua, and the sun stood still in the midst of the heavens, and it stood still six and thirty moments, and the moon also stood still and hastened not to go down a whole day.
    2 Samuel 1:17-18
[17]Then David chanted with this lament over Saul and Jonathan his son,
[18]and he told them to teach the sons of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar.
    Examples of Copyists' Errors
    2 Samuel 21:19; 1 Chronicles 20:15
    2 Kings 24:8; 2 Chronicles 36:9
    2 Samuel 8:3,16,19; 1 Chronicles 18:3
    1 Kings 4:26; 2 Chronicles 9:25
As you can see there no excuse not to accept the Book of Jasher if the copyist errors already exist. So wich is wich? And did you know also that the masoretic text was written centuries later after the death and resurrection of Christ? The masoretic text contains modern Hebrew also, and it's still accepted, even though it went through certain changes.

In 2 Timonthy:3 Paul mentions Jannes and Jambres the magicians Moses confronted, who's name are not given in Genesis but are mentioned in Jasher.( also some fragments among the dead sea scrolls mentioned Jannes and Jambres),
the testament of the 12 patriarchs refers and gives context to events that happens in Jasher such as the siege of the 7 Amorite cities.

I truly believe that the Book of Jasher will help people today who think logically to understand the stories in the Old Testament and know more about God. I really think the Book of Jasher is important for our time and could help many Westerners understand and like the Bible better. It seems like God wants everyone to have this book! So, I recommend checking out this video to learn more about the Book of Jasher! th-cam.com/video/fxMNn50Pw90/w-d-xo.html
