gamer7916..... yes. "until the son of Man is risen from the dead", the truth had to be somewhat veiled until the appointed time. The Transfiguration would show the true divine nature of Jesus Christ the eternal Son of God Most High, which was later to be fully unveiled by the Apostles.

The Indian Orthodox Church which is 2000 years old was establushed by St Thomas as per the directions if Christ. If St Thomas had written a gospel it would have been with this church as it was directly established by him. The Gospel of St Thomas was written by someone else other than st thomas the apostle.

We really don’t have written records fm Thomas in India and his teachings. Why is that? It is also interesting to note that when the Portuguese came to Goa they found that Christianity albeit a different version was established in the region as well as Kerala. After conveying this to Rome... there was schism as the teachings were said to be different fm that of the canonical gospels.. which were of cos formulated hundreds of years after Jesus.what happened to the written records of St Thomas sayings?

@Wahyu Suryaningpraja that from the Quran is based on the Gnostic Apocalypse of Peter, where the "living Jesus", the resurrected Jesus (as in the Gospel of Thomas) is understood to be alive, whereas his body was what was put to death. The distinction is between the "living Jesus" and the dead man. It's his actual body, and not someone else's body. The place Muhammad quoted didn't have to do with Jesus not actually being crucified, but it had to do with Jesus surviving by way of being resurrected.
It's a false dichotomy to think that Jesus either had to not be crucified at all, or else God didn't hear him.

Amazing. As I watched this, it completely reminded me of the Quran. Both of these are incoherent in very similar ways, telling a different "truth" after the apparent fact hundreds of years later, without much manuscript evidence, and whatever is available shows the story to be evolving ove time.
There is absolutely no similarity between the Gospel of Thomas and the Quran. The latter is about God telling man what kind of chastisement awaits him if he doesn’t follow Muhammad or associates others with God... in a nutshell. Read the gospel of Thomas and then form your view.

It does, because the Gospel of Thomas is squarely within the Sufi tradition. In fact, if you are familiar with the Sufi classics, there is little problem in understanding the teachings in Thomas. There is no incoherence once you cease to look for a set of authoritarian beliefs to follow.

It is a far more complex and sophisticated teaching instrument than that, but it will only really function for people with a good grasp of Classical Arabic, they say. It is said to have seven levels of meaning, of which the overt "religious" form is the most superficial.

This man can not understand all the concepts. Jesus May have said only prayer and fasting but due to the age of this document some minor words that change concepts are missing. Really would like to read all the books in entirety but those days are gone. Thank you for your comment.
Jesus was a bit different. John the Baptist was more of an ascetic and fasted frequently. But Jesus ate and drink, and was criticized for being a glutton.
The gnostics also tended to be very ascetic, since they believed the material world to be bad, then enjoying this physical life is bad.

Quite a few scholars in academia suggest a composition of late 1st, early 2nd century for Thomas (which puts it in the wheelhouse of primary sources/witnesses) but most of those i've studied identify it as a type of "NT pseudepigrapha" and attribute authorship to more radical offshoots such as the Essenes or the Gnostics created by S. Magus.

Very cogent analysis. Agree with timeline and dating. The gospel itself seems more meaningful and relevant when viewed from a modern perspective. Truth inside a riddle. It is definitely worth a full read.

In some traditions like Judaism (which i don’t follow), the name of G-d is/considered holy and not to be spoken or written casually. By omitting the letter "o" in the word "God," I strive to avoid any potential disrespect or misuse of the sacred name. This practice is a personal decision that aligns with my beliefs and values.

The gospel of Thomas is an attempt to marry Indian Hinduism to Christianity. I've read the Vedas and the Gospels and there are no open correlations except the Gospel of Thomas.

Especially if you read the Gospel of Marry, you see a lot of Gnostic teaching. Modern Christians want to say there is one way, but there were sects that claim to have direct experience of God (Gnosis) through private meditation but were destroyed by the more popular, and politically successful class that prayed in public.

I think one of the word "Gospel" in the title is making people treat it as one, even though it is simply a list of sayings, with no narrative, which is an entirely different thing from the Cannonical Four
Of course the gospel of Thomas may have changed over time: it was not canonical!!!
And of course it is more difficult to trace the historical development of this gospel: it was a Gnostic gospel, and Gnosticism was mainly esoterical. Secrecy and orality were its main policies.

There were tales regarding Jesus at the time of Muhammad which the latter incorporated into the Koran, which I do not believe was inspired. But the Muslims accept Jesus Son of Mary as a prophet as well as the fact that he was the messiah. So not quite accurate to say that the Isa and Jesus are two different people but rather the gospels portray Jesus as divine.

It's like this. Male and female are polarities, similar to electricity. Think of Male as positive and female as negative. Note, these are polarities, not connotations of positive ( meaning good ) and negative ( meaning bad ) they are just opposite polarities. Similar to electricity, energy flows from positive to negative. Given that the ultimate truth ( nirvana, samadhi, enlightenment, spiritual fruition, god realization, heaven, or whatever term endears you the most for the ultimate truth ) it is a neutral point. See? It's easier for a male to reach enlightenment, given that energy flows towards the neutral point since that point is more negative than the male polarity, than it is for a female, as energy in her is still flowing to a more negative point, away from the neutral. So, in essence, if a woman becomes "more like man", it will make it easier for her to reach enlightenment, or god realization ( nirvana, etc ). THAT is why Jesus said this. It's esoteric. Note that the true teachings of Jesus were not put in the Bible. When the books of the bible were canonized, these books of gnosticism were completely misunderstood, made no sense, and thus were considered "heretic", but it's a tragedy, because you don't have the true teaching of Christ in the Bible, only a few quotes made it there.

When you talk about Jesus being portrayed as a Greek philosopher, you miss the point that the only complete manuscript for Thomas is in Nag Hammadi codex II which along with the rest of the Nag Hammadi codices were most likely part of a Gnostic library. Seeing as we have strong evidence (from other texts in the Nag Hammadi library) of texts being modified, it is most likely that the reason for this version of Thomas being influenced by the Greek tradition is due to its Gnostic influences.
I'm hoping you would reconsider redoing this video with some more focus on the Gnostic influences on this gospel as they are very important and in this video completely left out.

1 - Jesus here exhort they shouldn't be fasting because, HE WAS WITH THEM. People usually fast to get closer to God. However, Jesus, the son of God was there with them. Jesus said these words AFTER he had asked them who he was in Thomas 13. If you don't know who Jesus is that's sin on itself. This is clarified by Jesus in Thomas 104.
2- The same idea with prayer, they were interested in asking about dead prophets etc when Jesus was right there with them. He emphasized that they should be asking him what they needed to know. He was basically saying that they did NOT know who he was and that was sin. This is clarified by Jesus in Thomas 104.
3 - Same thing with giving donations, they perhaps should have already known that Jesus is the high priest and his body is the new temple and that donations for the physical temple were in vain.
Thomas 114 - In order to understand this passage you have to understand the meaning of marriage. When a man and a woman get married, they become one. Which is the symbolism for Jesus and the church getting married. When that happens, we become one with Jesus and God, and also become spirits just like them.. NOT WOMAN OR MEN. That's the reason Jesus told the pharisee that people won't get married after the second coming. because they will be like angels. Matthew 22:29-30

I find it interesting that all the scholars who are sympathetic to gnosticism place Thomas in the first century, whereas those who are not sympathetic to gnosticism place it in the second of third centuries. For me it shows that scholarship is more often than not rationalisation of emotional bias.

I just finished the book of Thomas and if you read further it encourages fasting. It didn't say fasting is bad but rather Jesus says that why would you do something you don't like. Meaning you must fast with all your heart not because you have to. The book of Thomas seems to be a conversation between Jesus and his disciples hence "hidden words of Jesus". Obviously Jesus must have had conversations with his disciples alone. They were asking him about when the end will come, how to be a part of those that will go to heaven, who he was, etc. When it comes to Peter saying Mary must go since she is female, the way i see it is Jesus defended her saying what he said. Telling Peter that He will change her spirit to be male so she can enter heaven. I do not think it was literal. If females were not to partake in anything heavenly would God have created the female gender?

Gospel of Thomas is not saying that "prayers are bad", it is saying that people needs to be in harmony with their actions. They "don't have to", only "in spirit" when they are in harmony and want to do so. Also it is not against women. Read carefully the verse and its interpretation, it says "Look, I will make her man, would that satisfy you... " - "Look" means a proposal, like "What about" "If I do this, would that actually change your attitude towards women if she looks like man and I guide her etc..." - He just replied to the previous verse not to judge people by its appearance. He is actually being very sarcastic (and talking to deaf people), it actually put a smile on my face, because it is sooo for women and men. Really need some re interpretation on that video.....!

By comparing Thomas 24:3 to John 14:6, you show how little you really understand the Bible. Christ said he was the "LIFE", not "LIGHT" in John 14:6

AT LEAST GET YOUR VERSE QUOTATIONS CORRECT! You really can't condemn the Gospel of Thomas from the Bible if your quotations from the Bible are bogus!

You are only quoting part "1" of this Logia, not 1-3 as in the video, to make your contrast to Matthew 4:1-11, which is the temptation of Christ, and did include fasting, but was mostly about the 3 major forms of temptation, and not just fasting.
And then you also contrast Thomas 14 with Luke 11:1-28, WHICH HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH FASTING! At least read the verses that you are quoting before you put them into your videos!
Thomas 14 means to be careful and pure in your intention when you fast, pray or give alms, otherwise there could be consequences. You did not include Christ's warnings about praying or giving alms when contrasting this Logia with Matthew 4:1-11, since it would not "fit" the point you tried to make.
You are cherry picking the Gospel of Thomas to make your points, instead of quoting each of the Logia of Thomas in their entirety, which of course, would not allow you to make your supposed "points" as a Bible scholar.
I will try to say this in a nice way: If you can't tread water, then you need to stay out of the deep end of the pool. Maybe one day, you might be able to discuss the Gospel of Thomas and other writings. But until then, you are just part of the problem, not a solution.

If the gospel of Thomas wasn’t included I feel it’s because it would have took power away from church hierarchy.
The Church Hierarchy rarely teaches the Words of Christ which bring freedom, while they concentrate 90% of their teachings on the words of Paul, which brings slavery to the "Church System." Christ taught that there should be no church hierarchy (Luke 22:24-26) or church titles for men to rule others (Matthew 23:8-10), while Paul created both (1 Cor 12:28). Do a careful analysis of the doctrines of Paul as compared to the Doctrines of Christ and you will see many differences, such as Christ prohibiting anyone receiving payment for preaching His Gospel (Matthew 10:9-14) as this would corrupt the Word of God for money, while Paul said any elder that "ruled well" should get twice the daily wage in payment. (1 Timothy 5:17). The Pauline church is all around us, with beautiful buildings, and splintered into many denominations. The Christian church is the Single Entrance to the Kingdom of God here on the earth and is not visible through observation, as the Kingdom of God is Within You. (Luke 17:21).
The Gospel of Thomas follows these Words of Christ more than the modern "church" does, and that is why it was banned. If everyone followed and obeyed just the words of Christ, (such as the Gospel of Thomas) then no one would be in a church or under the church system. For example, no church today ever teaches Matthew 5:17-20, because it does not fit in their church theology that men can make their own laws. They make excuses for not following Matt 5:17-20, then they say that it does not mean what it says, then they ignore it. Christ said that the members of the modern church will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven because they won't follow His teachings (Matthew 7:21-23). Christ will say "Depart ye that work iniquity" to the church system, with the word "iniquity" meaning "lawlessness", or those who teach God's Law has been nailed to the Cross, as did Paul and his followers. It is very sad, but they won't do what He said, and so will enter the broad gate, for the narrow way of Christ is not the popular way of these churches.
I have a challenge for any pastor or preacher, that he teach only from the "words in red", that is, the words of Christ for an entire year. They can't do it and keep their church system going, which is the source of their income. They honor the words of Christ with their lips, but their heart is far from Him. The real Church that Christ died for is not the one you see with your eyes.

But the doctrines of Paul are different than the Doctrines of Christ. For example, Paul said that salvation is by grace through faith, not works. Ephesians 2:8-9. Christ said that eternal life was found by keeping the commandments. Matthew 19:16-19. These are different doctrines.
There are many other doctrines of Paul that do not match the doctrines of Christ.
Christ is superior to Paul, for he who is sent is not greater than the one that sent him (John 13:16)
Christ is the prophet that YHWH said we should hear (Acts 7:37), and
Acts 3:(23) And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
So if Christ is not the supreme prophet for our doctrines, then YHWH said that He would destroy us. YHWH did not say the same about the doctrines of Paul.
By the way, before we go any further, have you even read the Gospel of Thomas?

What is important is the law of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

Interestingly, the Gospel of Thomas (93:1-2) seems to give a more complete version of one passage found in Matthew (7:6).
Matthew reads:
"Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot, and turn and tear you in pieces."
Whereas Thomas reads:
"Do not give what is holy to the dogs, _lest they throw it upon the dunghill_ .Do not throw pearls to swine, lest they trample them into the mud."

He explains why he teaches in parables even. If people paid attention. Only certain people (the living) can actually understand what he's trying to teach about. So coding it in parables makes it easy for people who are capable, and impossible to understand for those who don't (the dead). This is a pretty huge theme in Jesus' teachings. And John actually tries to combat this, well aware of this fact; by saying "jesus doesn't teach secretly and only teaches openly". How can John be writing in defense of this, if thomas hadn't even been written yet?

What strange is that I was taught the things that are in the book of Thomas before I even found out about the book of Thomas. God taught me that when I pray I have to put my emotion into it and I have to believe the prayer has already been answered. That is what Thomas said that Jesus said in the book of Thomas. So I have no choice but to believe that these were actually jesus's words since he did teach me that as well himself.

@@migaotto292 I don't know. You see about 6 years ago I never believed in God until a bunch of spiritual things happened to me. God went above and beyond what he had to to prove to me that he is real so I began to believe. I go straight through him to learn about the spiritual world. I spent 4 years in isolation focusing on him. I can now hear him. I don't hear him in the way you and me hear each other but it's different. Sometimes it is difficult to hear him not through the fault of his own but through mine. My point is, everything that I learned is through him. There are parts of the Bible that he had me memorize. Matthew 5:3 through 5:48. So far, that is the part of the Bible that he has had me memorize. He has also taught me other things that are in parts of the Bible and help to clarify it. So yeah, I do believe in some parts of the Bible, but until I hear about the other parts through him then probably not.

People right throughout history have claimed spiritual experiences but have made contradictory conclusions about reality based on those experiences. I also used to think that I could hear God speaking to me, but now I look back and think that some of it was the Holy Spirit, but some was not. Also wondering: Why would God tell you to memorise the moral teachings of Jesus, but not the rest of what Jesus said?
@@migaotto292 I take absolutely no offense. I feel an immense love for people and humanity. Honestly I wondered the same thing when I began hearing him. I questioned everything. In the back of my mind I always questioned what if this isn't God and what if this is a demonic entity trying to trick me. He went above and beyond what he had to reveal to me that it is him. One way he did that was by prophesizing. He told me that the coronavirus was going to kill hundreds of thousands of people before it even left China. He even told me it was going to come into my area which is a very small town in the middle of Ohio. My family and I were the very first people to quarantine. Another thing, my mom had a massive stroke. I asked him to heal her and he did. 4 months after my mom's stroke she is walking and talking again as if nothing even happened to her. I was an aide and have seen the aftermath of massive strokes. A lot of them either ended up in wheelchairs for the rest of their life or in beds. Before him, I was a heroin addict for 15 years. He is the reason why I am clean now, he is also the reason why I've been and maintained abstinence from sexual immorality. I have to be honest with you that is a very big accomplishment for me. Ever since the day I dropped down on my knees and apologized to him and really meant it for everything that I've ever done against him I have been able to hear him and to communicate with him. At one time I was scared really scared about something, I was scared of the demonic entity. I was thinking in my head I hope he doesn't hurt me, then all of the sudden it felt like someone reached in my stomach and it was the most awesome feeling I've ever felt. It was a tingle from the middle of my stomach and it stretched out to the tips of my fingers and down through my toes. It was a sensation that lasted approximately 5 seconds of immense peace and that I knew everything was going to be all right.He wants that with everyone but they don't seek him out enough. They don't put the time and effort into knowing him and having faith in him. It took me two or three years in isolation doing nothing but praying and talking to him. See when people think of God they think that prayer means getting on your knees and clasping your hands and asking him for things and thanking him for things but he taught me that prayer isn't just that it's speaking to him. When I speak to him I don't just speak to him as God I speak to him as my dad. As a matter of fact I call him dad. It feels strange at first to talk to somebody like that when you can't see them but after a while you begin to hear him and he really wants that with everyone. That's one of the things he wants me to do is to show people how to connect with him on that level. He is not done having me memorize scripture yet. He has me memorize a little at a time. We just got done with Matthew, I'm not sure what he's going to have me do next but I'm sure he will let me know when it's time. I'll know when it's time because I will just automatically do those things. I never really got into reading or school work I was actually a high school dropout but astonishingly I was able to memorize the whole book of Matthew word for word. It was only because of him that I was able to do so and it actually didn't take me very long. He is real and if you could feel and know the love that he has for people it would drop you to your knees and have you asking yourself why don't I do more for you. There is so much love in him it is undescribable. That's another reason why I know it's him because he taught me how to love. He taught me not only to love people but to love all living beings. Even bugs. I would say for 100% certainty that the being who I have had communication with is definitely God. I just want everyone to have that relationship with him.

In John 18:20, Jesus is quoted as saying, " ... "I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; *and I spoke nothing in secret."*
Thomas would indicate that this scripture is either mistranslated, or for some strange reason, Jesus is speaking hyperbolically here, or Jesus lies. And if the four Gospel authors are in conflict with Thomas, then they're also being deceptive. Paul would also be a deceiver, and all collectively indict the Old Testament.

You're not being too picky. You're absolutely right. The so-called "Gospel of Thomas" is similar to modern cults(e.g JWs/Mormons,etc) that make claims about Jesus. What strikes me the most in their similarities is the fact that they're NOT satisfied with the true Jesus portrayed in the four Gospels; so they make false claims like "Jesus spoke to me" "The secret teachings of Jesus have been revealed to me" or "The New Testament is corrupt for not agreeing with my version of Jesus!"(Islam rings a bell here?) :-)

Another reason it could open with that line is that most of the book of Thomas is parables, and Jesus spoke through parables so those who could hear clearly would hear and believe. Sounds like you are just trying to debunk the gospel. One point that stuck out was you talked about the secret teachings of Jesus. It is well written how Jesus would often pull the apostles aside after his public teaching to translate the parable he taught on. We need to open our hearts and minds beyond mondern day Christianity

The Gospel of Thomas makes more sense to me because everything Jesus supposedly said I understand cos it’s all true. The bible is hard to interpret correctly and a lot of people have different views on it. But when you start to understand who God really is and what potential power you have, you’ll understand the Gospel is valuable.

Personally I think the Gospel of Thomas makes no sense and is no way accurate to what Jesus would say, except for some verses which are similar to some in the Gospels, but sound as though the author tried to remember but butchered half the saying.
I also feel that when you start to understand who God is through the Bible, and how dependent we are, you see how false the Gospel of Thomas is.

I, too, share the views of Crossan and Pagels that the Gospel of Thomas predates the Synoptics and dates to around the mid-1st Century. And sadly, there are too many mistranslations of Thomas for those reasons to be more obvious. I have studied so many varying translations... with the best, by far, being the one I give below. An example of the result of reading a mistranslation and in not having good accompanying commentary footnotes... is your offense here at the last saying in Thomas (Saying 114) that you judge as evidencing misogyny on Yeshua's (Jesus) part. What few understand here is that Yeshua was actually rebutting Peter's misogyny... with reprimanding sarcasm Peter would have immediately recognized as such.
Let's examine that last saying:
114. Shimon Kefa says to them: "Let Mariam depart from among us, for women are not worthy of the life." Yeshua says: "Behold, I myself shall inspire her so that I make her male, in order that she also shall become a living spirit like you males². For every female who becomes male, shall enter the Sovereignty of the Heavens."
The commentary footnote to this reveals that, in fact, Yeshua was mocking Peter (Shimon Kefa):

As this reveals, Yeshua was pointing out that the "Living Spirit" ... already in Heaven long before Peter might ever get there... WAS, HERSELF, FEMALE! 😆

The reason why so many Church Fathers considered Thomas was heretical ... is simple to understand: It wasn't Paulinian... while they were.
As for why Thomas has so many variations on parables and concepts we find in the Gospels and other NT books... let's not forget that the Synoptic Gospels, at least, were themselves apparently derived from a lost-to-history "Quelle" (Source) document... suspected of having been a sayings-only document, as Thomas actually is. No... I'm not suggesting Thomas is the "Quelle." But it might well be a Coptic version of it. And as it was Saul and his Greek-writing disciples who wrote the majority of the New Testament, then if they had Thomas, it might well have helped influence those writings. And also given Thomas' language often directly speaks out against Saul's beliefs, small wonder none of Saul's writers mention Thomas and why later leaders of his Rome-based Church spoke out against it.

Thomas was sent to do his discipleship in Syria and surround areas... so that would be a good indication of all Syriac references.

A weak argument that sounds like it's intended to take down authentic Christianity with heretical Xianity, that if a heretical book that claimed to be a gospel account was written after the lifetimes of Jesus and His apostles, then so were the authentic gospel accounts.
