gamer7916..... yes. "until the son of Man is risen from the dead", the truth had to be somewhat veiled until the appointed time. The Transfiguration would show the true divine nature of Jesus Christ the eternal Son of God Most High, which was later to be fully unveiled by the Apostles.

Quite a few scholars in academia suggest a composition of late 1st, early 2nd century for Thomas (which puts it in the wheelhouse of primary sources/witnesses) but most of those i've studied identify it as a type of "NT pseudepigrapha" and attribute authorship to more radical offshoots such as the Essenes or the Gnostics created by S. Magus.

Regardless of one's opinion on this document's teachings, one has to admit that the gospel of Thomas (c. 100 - 180) having manuscripts from around c. 200 is quite impressive!

Amazing. As I watched this, it completely reminded me of the Quran. Both of these are incoherent in very similar ways, telling a different "truth" after the apparent fact hundreds of years later, without much manuscript evidence, and whatever is available shows the story to be evolving ove time.
There is absolutely no similarity between the Gospel of Thomas and the Quran. The latter is about God telling man what kind of chastisement awaits him if he doesn’t follow Muhammad or associates others with God... in a nutshell. Read the gospel of Thomas and then form your view.

It does, because the Gospel of Thomas is squarely within the Sufi tradition. In fact, if you are familiar with the Sufi classics, there is little problem in understanding the teachings in Thomas. There is no incoherence once you cease to look for a set of authoritarian beliefs to follow.

It is a far more complex and sophisticated teaching instrument than that, but it will only really function for people with a good grasp of Classical Arabic, they say. It is said to have seven levels of meaning, of which the overt "religious" form is the most superficial.
Minor correction: @1:39 John 14:6 says Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Jesus being the Light is found in John 1:9 and 8:12.

Very cogent analysis. Agree with timeline and dating. The gospel itself seems more meaningful and relevant when viewed from a modern perspective. Truth inside a riddle. It is definitely worth a full read.

This man can not understand all the concepts. Jesus May have said only prayer and fasting but due to the age of this document some minor words that change concepts are missing. Really would like to read all the books in entirety but those days are gone. Thank you for your comment.
Jesus was a bit different. John the Baptist was more of an ascetic and fasted frequently. But Jesus ate and drink, and was criticized for being a glutton.
The gnostics also tended to be very ascetic, since they believed the material world to be bad, then enjoying this physical life is bad.

The Indian Orthodox Church which is 2000 years old was establushed by St Thomas as per the directions if Christ. If St Thomas had written a gospel it would have been with this church as it was directly established by him. The Gospel of St Thomas was written by someone else other than st thomas the apostle.

We really don’t have written records fm Thomas in India and his teachings. Why is that? It is also interesting to note that when the Portuguese came to Goa they found that Christianity albeit a different version was established in the region as well as Kerala. After conveying this to Rome... there was schism as the teachings were said to be different fm that of the canonical gospels.. which were of cos formulated hundreds of years after Jesus.what happened to the written records of St Thomas sayings?

@Wahyu Suryaningpraja that from the Quran is based on the Gnostic Apocalypse of Peter, where the "living Jesus", the resurrected Jesus (as in the Gospel of Thomas) is understood to be alive, whereas his body was what was put to death. The distinction is between the "living Jesus" and the dead man. It's his actual body, and not someone else's body. The place Muhammad quoted didn't have to do with Jesus not actually being crucified, but it had to do with Jesus surviving by way of being resurrected.
It's a false dichotomy to think that Jesus either had to not be crucified at all, or else God didn't hear him.

What others say can Contradict each other for whatever purpose or reason but Christ never contradicted himself HE is The Way, Truth, and Life. Every word he says is true their is no different Truth he spoke. Religions can use his words to try and discredit his words but you see that doesn't work. The other books u talk about May be teaching certain things contrary to Gospel. But the words Christ Jesus spoke are the words he spoke. Never is He saying something different about something He taught on before, you see.

You need to fix the video and start over with a new one. The gospel of Thomas is an attempt to marry Indian Hinduism to Christianity. I've read the Vedas and the Gospels and there are no open correlations except the Gospel of Thomas.

Especially if you read the Gospel of Marry, you see a lot of Gnostic teaching. Modern Christians want to say there is one way, but there were sects that claim to have direct experience of God (Gnosis) through private meditation but were destroyed by the more popular, and politically successful class that prayed in public.

When you talk about Jesus being portrayed as a Greek philosopher, you miss the point that the only complete manuscript for Thomas is in Nag Hammadi codex II which along with the rest of the Nag Hammadi codices were most likely part of a Gnostic library. Seeing as we have strong evidence (from other texts in the Nag Hammadi library) of texts being modified, it is most likely that the reason for this version of Thomas being influenced by the Greek tradition is due to its Gnostic influences.
I'm hoping you would reconsider redoing this video with some more focus on the Gnostic influences on this gospel as they are very important and in this video completely left out.

Yeah, which is why I said it is only possible. There are some internal clues when you compare to Mark, though of an Aramaic original. Mark translates random Aramaic phrases at times, like what Jesus said on the cross. The Parallels in Matthew do not have that, so some have theorized it was originally in Aramaic, but that is highly speculative.

@@JoseMartinez-us7qr Sure, but Papias also said he wrote down the sayings of Jesus in hebrew (style), source the canonical Matthew probably draws on. That's the reason for semiticisms in the sayings, more so than in Luke or John. Mark is traditionally held as a recension of Matthew.

There were tales regarding Jesus at the time of Muhammad which the latter incorporated into the Koran, which I do not believe was inspired. But the Muslims accept Jesus Son of Mary as a prophet as well as the fact that he was the messiah. I'm writing a masterthesis on the Gospel, and I promised myself not to enter in a discussion on this dating issue.
Going through the literature though, it is, of course, inevitable to be confronted with all the arguments on the topic.
First of all, it should be recognized, that a very specific audience has a very specific interest in dating the gospel after the canonical gospels and, more general, the NT scriptures. Institutionalized religion is, one way or the other, wether you like it or not, also political, i.e, defining itself within a context of power.
If an (very) early dating would be accepted, that would have quite an effect on the authority claim of the NT and would and should raise serious doubts on the main christian narrative (that definitely does not originate in the first century). It also should be clear, that the questions of dating and relation to the canonical gospels are intertwined.
A scholar like David W. Kim (2021) dates the origin of the gospel as far back as the first generation of disciples (45-60 CE). I'm not saying I find his arguments particularly convincing, but fact is, that in the last decades there has been a very clear shift in the dating discussion in favor of a more early origin. Many of the arguments brought up there are not discussed here, and the counter arguments that are brought forward to a second century dating are not elaborated, e.g. the presumed relation to the Diatessaron (based on an analysis by Quispel).
To use the argument that the Jesus of this gospel looks more like a Greek philosopher is ridiculous. E.g. Davies situates the gospel, for good reasons, within the tradition of Jewish wisdom literature. You must know little of Greek philosophy - or its chronology - to repeat this as a main argument. That is not to say that there is no trace of Greek philosophy in the gospel. But then, where does one not find such traces, as e.g. platonic perspectives are to be found everywhere in the middle east?
Something that has fascinated me for a long time, is this 'Q' hypothesis. Nobody seems to deny its existence, though nobody knows where, when, by whom, how and, to be honest, if it was ever there, let alone written down. Why would one use the 'we haven't heard of it until the end of the 2nd century' argument to exclude an early date considering a text that actually exists, and not use it to discard this 'Q' text (or oral tradition) that is no more than a hypothesis?
The way the word 'hidden' is interpreted here, is, from my perspective, as biased as a reading can be. The meaning of this word has to be established by the function it has within the text itself, and not by relating it to a text one assumes beforehand is from an earlier date. That is circular reasoning.
Why not turn the argument upside down? Because this Thomas presents 'hidden' words, after him others enter the market with a 'clear' and 'easy to understand' message? So the canonical gospels must post date the gospel of Thomas. But that would be nonsens also.
The way logion 13 is interpreted here (Bauckham), is as an argument, sheer nonsens. Again, one has to find the meaning of these words within the context of the text. The text acknowledges no more than the existence of two disciples called Simon Peter and Matthew. That is not too big news.
If the Gospel states that Matthew calls Jesus 'an (especially) wise philosopher'', how would that prove that the author(s) of Thomas knew a gospel of this name? If so, he would have blatantly misunderstood it, for 'Matthew' does not present Jesus as a 'wise philosopher'. Not at all. Both Simon Peter and Matthew are presented here as disciples that did not comprehend Jesus' liberating message. Seen from the perspective of this message, this is rightly done so. How would this prove a post 'Mark' and 'Matthew' dating?
Referring to the work of scholars like Craig A. Evans and N.T Wright support my first point: very much of what is brought forward in this debate, is not free from ''hidden' political considerations and implications.
The matter is anything but settled. I myself consider it of lesser importance because my focus is on the content and the bringing to light of the message of this very intriguing gospel. But, then, I have no specific interest in a post canonical dating. I find the 'rizomatic' relations (to use an expression of a wise philosopher) with other texts within the 'wisdom traditions' fascinating. Somehow I feel this does not resonate very much within the context of this channel.

Great video! Well thought out and good references. However, here are some points that may contradict your conclusion.
Gospel of Thomas starts out "these are the sayings of the living JC" which imply they were first written down before Jesus died. No mention of his Jesus end is in this Gospel. On the other hand, the canonical Gospels all are in the past tense.
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Failure of mention by early first century writings may have occurred but there is one which, if you follow the logic, shows that the Gospel of Thomas was written down before even the letters of Paul, which were 40=50 AD.
The proof is in the following.
Paul says in First Corinthians (written in 40-50 AD), chapter 2 “ It is written Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things that god hath prepared for the that love him”.......Paul, where is it written? In the Gospel of Thomas! which then dates this Gospel of Thomas no older than 40-50 AD when Pauls letters were written!
Searching accordances, the only direct match with this statement is with the Gospel of Thomas! From the Gospel of Thomas, saying 17. Jesus said, "I will give you what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, what no hand has touched, what has not arisen in the human heart."
If you accept this deductive reasoning, then much of the canonical gospels also existed much earlier than scholars say since much of the material of Jesus’ words are contained in the Gospel of Thomas.

I, too, share the views of Crossan and Pagels that the Gospel of Thomas predates the Synoptics and dates to around the mid-1st Century. And sadly, there are too many mistranslations of Thomas for those reasons to be more obvious. I have studied so many varying translations... with the best, by far, being the one I give below. An example of the result of reading a mistranslation and in not having good accompanying commentary footnotes... is your offense here at the last saying in Thomas (Saying 114) that you judge as evidencing misogyny on Yeshua's (Jesus) part. What few understand here is that Yeshua was actually rebutting Peter's misogyny... with reprimanding sarcasm Peter would have immediately recognized as such.
Let's examine that last saying:
114. Shimon Kefa says to them: "Let Mariam depart from among us, for women are not worthy of the life." Yeshua says: "Behold, I myself shall inspire her so that I make her male, in order that she also shall become a living spirit like you males². For every female who becomes male, shall enter the Sovereignty of the Heavens."
The commentary footnote to this reveals that, in fact, Yeshua was mocking Peter (Shimon Kefa):
(²exquisitely ironical, since ‘spirit’ in Aramaic-the original language of the logion-is feminine.)
As this reveals, Yeshua was pointing out that the "Living Spirit" ... already in Heaven long before Peter might ever get there... WAS, HERSELF, FEMALE! 😆

The reason why so many Church Fathers considered Thomas was heretical ... is simple to understand: It wasn't Paulinian... while they were.
As for why Thomas has so many variations on parables and concepts we find in the Gospels and other NT books... let's not forget that the Synoptic Gospels, at least, were themselves apparently derived from a lost-to-history "Quelle" (Source) document... suspected of having been a sayings-only document, as Thomas actually is. No... I'm not suggesting Thomas is the "Quelle." But it might well be a Coptic version of it. And as it was Saul and his Greek-writing disciples who wrote the majority of the New Testament, then if they had Thomas, it might well have helped influence those writings. And also given Thomas' language often directly speaks out against Saul's beliefs, small wonder none of Saul's writers mention Thomas and why later leaders of his Rome-based Church spoke out against it.

Interestingly, the Gospel of Thomas (93:1-2) seems to give a more complete version of one passage found in Matthew (7:6).
Matthew reads:
"Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot, and turn and tear you in pieces."
Whereas Thomas reads:
"Do not give what is holy to the dogs, _lest they throw it upon the dunghill_ .Do not throw pearls to swine, lest they trample them into the mud."
I don't think you have addressed the fact that many of the "sayings" in Thomas are also in the canonical gospels (though many are not). Some will take that to mean that these were the secret sayings of Jesus and that the writers of the canonical gospels, not being actual disciples of Jesus, were unaware of them. Some will take it to mean that the writer was seeking to legitimise the GoT by quoting the other Gospels and just inserted other, polemical points.
It is similar to the Pauline writings in that there is no Jesus narrative or talk of virgin births and the like. Others still, think the whole story was a politically motivated fabrication by a Jewish faction, taken over by Romans for their own purposes. This would explain why all writings earlier than 70AD about such a giant figure in ancient times have been destroyed and there is no reliable corroborative evidence of an historical Jesus outside of the Gospels.
Though it's simpler with Jesus Christ personally if he spoke it then it was Truth, no matter where the sayings are recorded, and I have also noted that their is no contradiction from the book of Thomas's qoute's of Christ when added to what was quoted from his words in the Bible. Religion can try whatever they want to confuse people, it still comes down to what Christ Jesus taught was the Truth completely no matter how he explained it, he did not Contradict his own words like we do with ours.

Gospel of Thomas is not saying that "prayers are bad", it is saying that people needs to be in harmony with their actions. They "don't have to", only "in spirit" when they are in harmony and want to do so. Also it is not against women. Read carefully the verse and its interpretation, it says "Look, I will make her man, would that satisfy you... " - "Look" means a proposal, like "What about" "If I do this, would that actually change your attitude towards women if she looks like man and I guide her etc..." - He just replied to the previous verse not to judge people by its appearance. He is actually being very sarcastic (and talking to deaf people), it actually put a smile on my face, because it is sooo for women and men. Really need some re interpretation on that video.....!

"Q" is merely the overlapping material in Luke & Matthew but not found in Mark, theorized as originating in an early but lost "sayings" source (Thomas is NOT that, it's a 2nd century sectarian work, quoting the canonical works with a gnostic spin added). the four gospels were the earliest ones available. Ireneaeus said it was fitting because there were four corners of the earth, four winds, etc. but he was being poetic. "three original languages of John the Baptist"? Let me guess, Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek? (we don't know, do we?) The Essenes were a pre-Christian sect of Jews awaiting the Messiah, attempting to keep themselves pure from the corruption of the Temple establishment in anticipation of the fulfillment of prophecy and the in-breaking of God's rule on earth (closely associated with the Qumran community who produced the Dead Sea Scrolls). The Ethiopian churches eventually did form their own split (as part of "Oriental Orthodoxy") by the 5th century over the monophysite or monophisite (sp?) controversy. they are the people today claiming to have the true Ark of the Covenant (locked away of course). their bible has a bunch more books in it, mainly church manuals and collections of hymns. Orthodox and Catholics should get together. Gnosticism is a clear deviation from the teachings of Jesus and the Apostolic Tradition. the true "Gnosis" (Knowledge) is to be found in the Church, as Clement of Alexandria famously argued. the wisdom of the ages is fulfilled in Christ, who is Wisdom (Sophia) incarnate, as Origen would argue. these were responding to the "knowledge-falsely so called" (as St. Irenaeus put it).

Thomas 24:3 Here, Jesus is talking about the people who finally understands the gospel and now becomes the lamp for the rest of the world. He is not talking about himself. this is clarified by Jesus in Thomas 24 and 50
Thomas 14:1-3
1 - Jesus here exhort they shouldn't be fasting because, HE WAS WITH THEM. People usually fast to get closer to God. However, Jesus, the son of God was there with them. Jesus said these words AFTER he had asked them who he was in Thomas 13. If you don't know who Jesus is that's sin on itself. This is clarified by Jesus in Thomas 104.
2- The same idea with prayer, they were interested in asking about dead prophets etc when Jesus was right there with them. He emphasized that they should be asking him what they needed to know. He was basically saying that they did NOT know who he was and that was sin. This is clarified by Jesus in Thomas 104.
3 - Same thing with giving donations, they perhaps should have already known that Jesus is the high priest and his body is the new temple and that donations for the physical temple were in vain.
Thomas 114 - In order to understand this passage you have to understand the meaning of marriage. When a man and a woman get married, they become one. Which is the symbolism for Jesus and the church getting married. When that happens, we become one with Jesus and God, and also become spirits just like them.. NOT WOMAN OR MEN. That's the reason Jesus told the pharisee that people won't get married after the second coming. because they will be like angels. Matthew 22:29-30

Can you a video like this on the Book of Enoch? The Old Testament refers to the Book of Enoch in some passages.
Randy St. Clair the Old Testament does not refer to the Book of Enoch.. Enoch “prophesied” it said in the New Testament, but does not say anything about a book.. it said he prophesied..

@@rayflo2592 Even today a lot of people make little distinction between something said and something writen when it comes to the Bible. Many say things like "Christ said man shall not live by bread alone" they rarely say in the book of Mathew and in chapter 4 etc.
Jude using the word "saying" is not a relevant argument at all to poise your defense on. Furthermore the oral tradition in those days were almost as good as having something in writing.
I came to this understanding of Christianity many years before I had ever heard of the Gospel of Thomas- through my own life, and through my twin whose name was "little Christ, the fragrant offering, the victory of the people, the little twin." I was shown a universal truth about humanity and life merely through understanding my own life, nature, and names, and by accepting that we are all fully human and fully nature- fully many and fully one. My father, a reverend, rejected me and I was ostracized for questioning the established teachings of the church.

The Gospel Of Thomas technically IS in parts of the Bible. It is just scattered throughout.
