Sand Dune Simulation

- Made in Houdini using a height field data structure.
Main solver is written in OpenCL using a variation on Werner's dune modeling.
Sim time ~ 1 seconds / frame.
Rendered in Redshift.
Initial setup is some random terrain bedrock. A layer of even sand is added on top then slumped down. From there the dune simulation forms the sand dunes naturally based on a wind vector.
only the lisan-al-gaib can create renders like this

Now I want a video game where the landscape changes over time bc of this
Outer Wilds has a planet where sand flow changes its surface, revealing secret locations. Look it up !
If these are particles you're going to wait for a long time.
starfield had SO MUCH potential and they fucked it up so bad
Honestly why I’m so exited about AI advancement and video games
This was 1 second per frame :D
*The spice must flow.*
*_Control the spice, control the universe_*
Fear is the mindkiller
Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration
The little death that brings total obliteration
He drank the water of life, and the knowledge of all the 3D artists became his.
Here in gamedev we've ruled by CPU power and GPU power. In Houdini we need to cultivate desert power.
Underrated Dune comment
the RAM must flow
Dune vfx goes crazy
AS WRITTEN
This is very cool. I'm delighted by the amount of Dune references in the comments. Frank Herbert would be proud.
Finding these gems are exactly what the youtube algorithm is for.
I showed this to my 4 year old when he asked how sand dunes move every day. He was mesmirized
Thats adorable 😭❤
Missing Shai-Hulud simulations
It's like watching ocean waves in slow motion. Very fascinating.
Once you speed it all up, a lot of things that are made up of little start looking like water. Fun fact: large crowds of people move similarly to flowing water
Ive never seen a better representation of the Aeolian effect, this is incredible
The molten slag that was once your computer must flow
Really beautiful effect
Now imagine this in a video game… that would be so cool
oh yeah man sand dune simulation
it would be interesting if a simpler version of this can happen in realtime in a game
Could also work well for snow drifts
They had it down to 1 second per frame so I'm willing to bet realtime is possible
doesnt necessarily need to lose complexity, a good analytic integral can make things hundreds of times faster
Looks like a good place for the Shai-Hulud
the spice must flow
How long i searched for something like this and like magic it appeared in my recommended. Thanks for making that
Very cool! Great job!
Me when I walk too rhythmically (the worm is coming)
Beautiful, awesome work!
I like sand. Its coarse and it gets everywhere
satisfying af bro
impressive!
So impressive! It almost looks like waves in water, but much times slowed!
Gave me the idea of an open world dessert game where the sands are constantly shifting. Really cool!
POWER OVER SPICE
IS POWER OVER ALL
I'm from Saudi Arabia and I can assure you that this is very realistic.
I know that this video was made before the movies, or trailers, but i was half expecting a sand Timothée Chalamet to pop up
Amazing!
That's really nifty.
Really cool!! I'm not sure exactly how easy this would be but it looks like the grains of sand maybe have a little bit too much friction since they behave a lot like a whole, this can be seen well on the middle-left area where sand never cascades down from the bigger mound in the middle.
We need tech like this in kenshi 2 when it comes out
This would be sweet to see in a game during a sandstorm.
We need 10 hours of this
wow very nice work
Good illustration how massive subterranean structures (Sietches) would look like just a little rocky outcrop in the desert on Arrakis.
oooh, that looks nice
would it be possible to do this at real time? atleast at a more realistic rate of change?
That was cool af
Wow, its so underrated! That's amazing, I've be searching for something like this for years. Is that possible to make this simulation react to objects like castle in the desert?
With houdini, it is. But it is also the most complex software
you can export from Houdini
where is the spice
so beutiful!
Needs variability of the wind, and needs to pulse/gust to get sand to drop on bedrock. Actual dunes are going to deposit sediment at different rates on the Lee side of the hill.
So cool
It's like waves in the water but SOLID
Deserts of Kharak with this would have been amazing, prolly not doable with todays technology but the thought is very pleasing
No worms?
What is the particle count in this? It looks SO smooth and "predictable" in the sense that it's a good digital representation of real world behavior.
Where are the shai hulud?
That's really great! AFAIK the standard Werner algorithm moves just one slab at a time - are you operating on all slabs simultaneously in openCL to get better performance?
@@LuckyPause3d Nice! Yeah seems tricky if too slabs end up moving to the same place during one tick but seems to work well!
What mentat made this?
interesting.... how long did this take to simulate?
Was this recommended because I watched a few Dune the series related videos or something?
how do i get this as a wall paper this is awesome
Impressing man. I'm not a houdinii user but Maya user. But i will llike to learning houdini and buy your plugin only to test it. It's a particles simulation right?
why are you so cool barrett, is this possible in Blender?
Where are the worms
very cooooool
Do industry have sand dunes solver yet?
you need some serious desert power to render this
My desert. My simulation. My dune.
Habrá un tutorial para replicarlo?
If you look at actual satellite images of the desert, this is not the patterns you see. Can you simulate flood water deposition of sand?
sand dunes are just very slow waves, because sand can also be a fluid
like water waves, they build up due to wind push, creafing small crests, which makes those interact more with the wind, making bigger and bigger and bigger crests, until its a large wave
sand can not be a fluid, get your head out of your donkey, you are talking absolute nonsense.
Sand is a solid, and will always be a solid.it also does not even act like a liquid.
water waves build up mostly because of tidal forces, not because of wind push.
sand waves are a product of unidirectional flow, they even form under water, where they obviously have nothing to do with wind. they aren't waves, they are accumulations pushed by wind, until they collapse and get pushed forwards again. they are more akin to wrinkles than to waves. if you push your sheets forward, that's essentially what happens.
This is why Sietch Tabr is next to a gypsum flat
The wind works like water!
In a weird way, this illustrates how ocean waves work, but in slow motion.
The dune must flow
Stilgar, have we wormsign?
I think I got this in my recommended because I’ve been watching a bunch of videos about Dune, the movie, but science is cool nonetheless!
We need more sand
You wrote the solver in OpenCL? Thats crazy i would like to read the paper!
It feels like i'm moving through the 4th dimension.
I'm disappointed that he didn't put dune music in the background
how it was written...
Is this a self-updating heightmap for the sand?
It might be....looking from the clip I'm not sure
im not here to make a quippy dune reference everyone's already made but i wonder, in real life, how long would it take for such dunes to actually move the distance they do? Weeks? Months? Years? Very cool sim in any case
R.A. Bagnold would be proud :)
Now I need to go listen to some Dune2 music
Any way to learn or buy this setup? I constantly need dunes and am not satisfied with an eroded dune heightfield.
Barrett Meeker I create environments for films. Being able to plug in my layout geo and run the sand sim would be incredibly helpful and much more realistic than gaea or hf erosion methods
@@LuckyPause3d I would also love to purchase a hip or tool if you end up making one available. Would be so fun to play with this one
@@LuckyPause3d Yes I definitely would love to purchase this and figure out how to use this!
This is how I feel when I'm really drunk.
Came from pippenfts's video about the water
my desert my arrakis my dune
MUADIB!
Dune reference?
Desert Power!
frank herbert would lose his shit
i clicked on this video hoping for dune references in the comments. I was not disappointed
Could you possibly share OpenCL solver?
@@LuckyPause3d cool!
can you sell it to side fx please ;)
Please make a dune game with this tech.
