  • DIY Buckled Alloy Wheel Truing / Straightening
    In this video I attempt to to improve the dented alloy rim that I purchased in bent condition using various homebrew techniques that I conceived I did beat out the originally much larger dent / flat edge spot before filming this video, this rim has now gone from un usable to very usable spare alloy wheel to fit my Volvo d5 and is much better trued. At the time of writing this my hand has blisters!

    I think the noise was the wood cracking. Thanks for the vid. I learned a little more to help me with my motorbikes bent alloy rim. Subbed/Likie

    This is so common we just need to join together and get D.O.T 2 buy us all new wheels for all those dang pot holes they need to repair...😊 The truth is at the end of the day once they're tweaked out it's hard to ever get them back true even buy professional just become a pothole scout😂 keep out dem holes.....❤

      Agreed, we have to jump though hoops of fire to keep vehicles “roadworthy”. We need roads that are vehicle-worthy to use them on!

    What freaks me out is that I bent my rim when I hit a pothole the other day and without searching anything on the internet these videos started popping up when I watched other unrelated YT videos. The internet is listening!!

      I feel exactly the same and often this occurs to me!

      Happened to me when my shop got inspected and I needed a GFCI outlet in the bathroom, called someone to see if they had one sitting around so I didn't need to go out and buy one. When I got home a couple hours later and opened TH-cam there was a video on how to install a GFCI outlet, even though I've never searched for anything like that. It's creepy...

    Going to try this tomorrow. The bend is hardly noticeable but still making the tyre leak air.

      I hope your make a good improvement to your wheel.

    You need to use a propane torch to heat the area being trued in order to soften the alloy both to allow for easier bending and crack avoidance.

      If I had the tyre removed I would have gone for it!

      MAP would be better, gets hotter than propane. You can do it with the tire on just gotta be careful.

      @@TheRepairer I recently used a cheap propane torch and did this procedure with the tire on. I just used a piece of sheet metal to shield the tire. I managed to straighten the rim enough to put new tires on without a leak.

    A bit of crack...maybe cracked when you bent it or hit it...good work using bottle jack. Maybe add some heat to make aluminum less brittle.
    Oooo, hear that snap crackle pop though.

  • @76Patilac

    Yeah, crsvkle noise could be wood or brake pad crunbling...hope u wore dust mask...brake pads have asbestos in them. Awesome material properties...just keeps breaking off smaller chunks and that is problem in our lungs, etc.

    • @76Patilac
      @76Patilac 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Supposedly it is the brown asbestos that gets in, but does not come out, and the white asbestos is not as harmful...something about one being spiral shaped and the other being straight.

      Brake pads havnt gad asbestos in them for years...

    There’s a crack in it

      I think it was tyre adhesive, I cleaned it off later in the video.

    You already got cracks at the bend… the rim is done unless you resurface it.

    • @TheRepairer

      I thought they were hairline cracks too but they cleaned right off.

    WTF did you even let the air out. Take the bloody tyre off and apply some heat to relax the alloy before you destroy the thing please people don't repair your alloys like this.

      Such an advisably chosen username - I could have communicated my intentions in this video but didn’t for some reason.
      The idea of the repair was to see if I could improve the rim enough to use it without paying for costly tyre removal and refitting.
      I could have deflated the tyre but given that air is easily compressible. I fail the see what difference this would have made.

      @@TheRepairer If that rim split while you were doing what you were doing it could of killed you next time you want to do something like that take the tyre off it's really not that hard to do with tyre levers or at least let the air out take my advise it may save your life.

      @mrgrumps3062 I think it may have had all of 30 psi in it at a guess possibly less as it hadn’t been used as it came in a job-lot of three . Are you in some way applying the dangers of an Hgv tyre and rim combination which are inflated upto 130psi in the case of a super single tyre. These can provide in the region of 2 tonnes of energy during an tyre explosion?

    • @mrgrumps3062
      @mrgrumps3062 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheRepairer I am not trying to have a go at you but what you did was a very dumb thing to do a tyre letting go inflated to 30psi can and have killed do some research on it also when you try to reshape a bend in a alloy rim you should use some heat again do some research. If your going to do this sort of thing at least learn about it first.

      We are obviously at opposite ends of the spectrum with this one and will have to agree to disagree but for the benefit of the many readers of this thread please point then in the direction of this research via a link if possible.
